PPCB officials collect ground water samples

Dera Bassi, December 9
A team of the Punjab Pollution Control Board collected samples of ground water on Wednesday. Complaints regarding contaminated ground water had been pouring in for long. SDO Gursarn Singh said following the directions of board chairman Kahan Singh Pannu, the team was formed to collect samples from Ghaggar river and other places. Six samples were collected from Issapur village. Earlier, the team collected samples from Ghaggar and Dhabi.

Farmers of Issapur, Bhankarpur, Bakarpur and adjoining villages said the water was not fit for irrigation. They said industrial effluents discharged in Dhabi choe damaged their crops. The board officials assured the farmers of doing the needful.

Woman hit by bus, dies

Ambala, December 9
Jarnail Kaur (50), wife of a retired Armyman, died at a local hospital after she was hit by a bus on the Ambala-Chandigarh road, near here.

Sources said she was returning from Gold Lion Army Canteen, along with her husband Labh Singh, when a speeding bus hit her.

She was rushed to the hospital by her husband, where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the bus managed to run away leaving the passengers and the vehicle on the spot. — TNS

Man consumes poison, dies

Banur, December 9
A 33-year-old person died after he allegedly consumed poison, here today.

The deceased was identified as Gurjit singh of Hulka village.As per the information, the victim had allegedly consumed poison last night and was rushed to GMCH-32, Chandigarh, in serious condition.

Gurjit died today in the hospital and his body was handed over to his relatives after conducting the post-mortem examination.

Gurjit is survived by his wife and two children. — OC

Sports complex-7 lift trophy

The volleyball team of Sports Complex, Sector 7, lifted the Chandigarh Volleyball Championship Trophy after defeating Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, (GMSSS 26) in the final match of the tourney, held here, today.

The host team defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, team by 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22, in the sub-junior (boys’) category.

In sub-junior (girls’) category, Sports Complex, Sector 46, defeated Sports Complex, Sector 42, by 25-11 and 25-22 while the match between YFC, Sector 27, and Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, remained an interesting affair as the team of GSSS 26 won the first set by 25-20 while the YFC bounced back and won the second set by 25-23.

But the players of GSSS 26 played managed to win the final set by 25-18.

Kensiya, Asmita bring laurels

Teams of St Anne’s School, Sector 32, St Kabir School, Sector 26, Government Girls Secondary School, Sector 20, and St Stephen’s School, Togan, register wins in their respective matches during the St Kabir Inter-School Basketball Tournament, being held here, today.

In the first league match of the day, St Anne’s school out pointed Sacred Heart, Sector 26, by 31-21. Kensiya of St Anee’s edge passed her opponents to earn 19 points while her counterpart Asmita contributed 6 points.

For loosing side, Harnoor (8 points) and Gurleen (6 points) reduced the margin for Sacred Heart.

In the second league match, hosts St Kabir School, Sector 26, beat Mount Carmel school, Sector 47, by the margin of 36-18.

St Kabir School won the first quarter by 10-4 while grabbed second and third quarter by 12-4 and 9-4, respectively.

Rikit (10 points) and Garv (8 points) were the main scorers for the winning side while Rishabh and Anshul secured four points each for Mount Carmel School.

In the third match, Government Girls Secondary School, Sector 20, routed New Public School, Sector 18, by 21-12 points.

Ruchika and Riddhi led the team to victory with Lata securing six points. Amandeep Kaur (6 points) and Sonam (4 points) were the principal scorers for the losing side.

In the last match, St Stephen’s School, Togan, earned full points against Vivek High School, Sector 38, after defeating the latter by 39-24. Arvind guided the team to victory with 14 points contribution. Aditya earned 10 points for Vivek High School.

Manan’s ton strengthens Punjab on day two

Punjab team’s skipper, Manan Vohra, struck a brilliant ton to consolidate his team in against Andhra Pradesh on the second day of the ongoing Cooch Behar Trophy for Boys (U-19) elite (C), being played at PCA Cricket Stadium, Mohali.

Manan’s (109 off 198) ton helped the team score 275 for 5 in 99 overs at close of second day’s play to get a 34-runs.

Earlier, Ankit Pursharthy (96), Mohit Handa (56) were the other main scorers. For Andhra Pradesh D Naren Reddy grabbed 3 for 54.

Brief Scores: Andhra Pradesh (1st innings)-241 all out. Punjab (1st innings)-275 for 5 in 99 overs (Manan 109, Ankit Pursharthy 34, Sachin Sohal 36, Mohit Handa 56 and Navneet 31, D Naren Reddy 3 for 54).

CC-42 weightlifters bag gold medals

Brawny weightlifters of Coaching Centre, Sector 42, showed a great courage and bagged men’s title in the ongoing Chandigarh Weightlifting Competitions, here today.

The winning side secured 185 points while PS Club finished second with 101 points.

For the Weightlifters of Coaching Centre, Sector 42, Saddam Hussain (56 kg), Vijay Raj (62 kg), Gaurav Rohilla (69 kg) and Bhupinder Singh (77 kg) grabbed gold medals.

MDAV-22 thrash Luxmi in kho-kho

The kho-kho team of the MDAV School, Sector 22, trounced Luxmi Tararathore School, Mohali, in the finals of 8th Challenger kho-kho Championship of boys and girls (U-14) held at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today.

The winning team defeated Luxmi School by 10 points while in the finals of Girls’ category, Sarvhitkri Vidhya School, Sector 43, overcame Swami Ram Thirath School, Mohali, by 4 points. — TNS
