Odds apart, Astro Turf to be ready by Dec 23
Bathinda, November 30 The German team comprising Opitz, Victor Bastos and Kutas are carrying out the installation work of an artificial turf, which is first of its kind in Malwa region. Speaking to TNS on the college ground whereon the Astro Turf is coming up, the team members said apart from frequent breakdown of a machine, meant to lay the carpet on the ground, they were unable to comprehend the language of labourers. “Few men have been given to us as assistance but getting them involved with the work is quite tough as they don’t understand English or German. They know Punjabi or Hindi, which we are not well conversant with,” said Opitz. Opitz works for the Polytan Company, which is carrying out the installation of Astro Turf here. He pointed out that despite the language barriers and frequent breakdown of the machine, they were confident of completing the project before December 23. “We are getting support from the local authorities to carry out the project,” said the team. It is the team’s first visit to Bathinda. Before, they had installed Astro Turfs at Jalandhar, Delhi, Chennai and Madurai. The team said the authorities should install sprinklers around the Astro Turf so as to avoid injuries to players. “A wet turf reduces the risk of injury to a player who skids while playing,” the team said. Sukhdev Bhullar, a hockey coach, said the capacity of the stadium would increase to almost 5,000 with construction of gallery and making seating arrangements under the covered area of the stadium. He pointed out that the hockey players were quite excited about the Astro Turf stadium, in which floodlights would also be installed. Entire construction work is likely to be completed within a month and a half month or so, he said. Fact file

LPG consumers in Maur Mandi protest delay in refilling of cylinders
Bathinda, November 30 The protesters raised slogans against the officials of the Maur Gas Agency and blocked the road for over two hours. The police reached the spot and pacified the protesters and assured them of taking up the matter with the authorities concerned. Harbhajan Singh, one of the protesters, said the gas agency officials force villagers to stand in queues for hours together and still, they had to return empty-handed. “It is harrowing experience for consumers to get gas cylinders refilled every month. While influential people manage to get their cylinders refilled easily, others have to wait for days together,” he alleged. He said people from Bhai Desa, Ramanwas, Kotli and other nearby villages had raised their voice against the delay in refuelling of gas cylinders. “Consumers queue up as early as 5 in the morning but even then, they fail to get their LPG cylinders refilled,” said Surjeet Singh. He added that people like him were making rounds of the gas agency for the past three days but in vain. He said the protest would be intensified if authorities or administration failed to do the needful in this regard soon. The protesters also alleged that LPG cylinders were sold in the black market in connivance with the authorities concerned. An official of the Maur Gas Agency, Rajinder Kumar, said the dharna was politically motivated. “The Indian Oil Corporation has not sent us cylinders for the past five days. We had conveyed this to the consumers too but they did not listen,” he said. He said two trucks loaded with LPG cylinders had arrived today and no consumer would return empty-handed from tomorrow onwards, adding that the agency has 12,800 gas connections and 6,000 gas cylinders. Official Speak We did not get the supply of LPG cylinders from the Indian Oil Corporation for the past five days. Two trucks loaded with cylinders have arrived and no consumer will return empty-hand from tomorrow onwards. — Rajinder kumar, official, Maur Gas agency |
