Criminal past dogs candidates

The shady criminal past of at least five candidates who are contesting the Municipal Corporation (MC) elections on tickets of the two major political parties, the Congress and BJP, seems to have come to haunt them.

Warrants against ex-councillor
Chandigarh, November 29
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate JS Sidhu today issued bailable warrants against former nominated councillor Dr AP Sanwaria and his wife Sushila Devi for ensuring the presence of both above said accused for 23-01-2012 as they had avoided summons issued by the court in a criminal complaint filed by “PC Sanghi on behalf of federation versus Dr AP Sanwaria and others” under Sections 420, 120-B, 511 of the IPC.

Immigration fraud: Three arrested in Sector 34
Accused are owners of ACME Career World

The special investigating team (SIT) of the UT police, formed to crack down on fraudulent immigration firms in the city, today arrested three persons who are the owners of ACME Career World in Sector 34 for allegedly duping many clients to the tune of Rs 2 crore on the promise of sending them abroad.

School admissions
HC tells Admn to form uniform policy
Chandigarh, November 29
Opening a new chapter of consistency in school admissions, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the UT administration to come out with a uniform policy for admissions to city schools. The policy is to be formulated in coordination with the school managements and will come in force from 2013-2014 sessions.

76 nomination papers rejected, 2 kept pending
Chandigarh, November 29
Out of the 232 nomination papers filed for Municipal Corporation (MC) elections, 76 were rejected and decision about two was kept pending for tomorrow.

Chilly winds lash tricity
Chandigarh, November 29 The city today recorded the lowest temperature of the season at 10.2 degrees celsius. Meteorologists cited chilly winds blowing from Himachal Pradesh and the Kashmir valley as the reason for this.

Centre nod to tender document
Chandigarh, November 29
Residents of the city will have to wait another two months before they will be able to get high security registration plates (HSRPs) fitted on their vehicles. The good news, however, is that the Union government has approved the UT’s tender document on these plates which are expected to be advertised soon after the conclusion of MC elections.

CAS promotions, retirement age enhancement

It seems that long-pending CAS promotions and retirement age enhancement will get approval of the Syndicate before the upcoming Senate meeting, scheduled for December 20. The code of conduct, in force due to MC elections, will be over on November 19.

A 51-year-old cancer patient admitted to the PGI committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the hospital here this evening. The victim, Ravi Bali, died on the spot.

DAV-10 in trouble again
Appoints 83 asst profs on contract who are not qualified

Information sought under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act) by an activist has revealed that DAV College, Sector 10, appointed a large number of assistant professors on contract who are not qualified as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Panjab University (PU) norms, defeating the legitimate right to employment of qualified ones.

Strike to hit work at colleges today
Chandigarh, November 29
Work in city colleges will come to a standstill tomorrow following a joint strike called by teachers and non-teaching staff of non-government-aided colleges. Intensifying their protest against the long-pending demands, all colleges will observe a full-day strike. Seven city colleges will observe the strike.

Takes exception to appeal in workman’s case

Wasting the time of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has cost Panjab University (PU) dear. Taking exception to its decision to file an appeal in a workman’s case, a Division Bench has imposed costs of Rs 10,000 on PU.

Six-year-old boy crushed to death
Zirakpur, November 29
A six-year-old boy was crushed to death under a speeding truck in the godown area at Pabhat this morning.

Woman held for neighbour’s murder
Chandigarh, November 29
The local police today arrested a woman for beating her 55-year-old neighbour to death in Sector 52. The police arrested 35-year-old Beena in a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 of the IPC.

28-year-old commits suicide
Panchkula, November 29
Dewan (28), a native of Madhya Pradesh, committed suicide at the old mundan ghat near the historic Mata Mansa Devi shrine here today. According to sources, the youth’s body was found hanging from a tree at the mundan ghat this morning.

Four hurt as trucks collide
Banur, November 29
Four persons were injured when a truck and a tanker collided near here today. According to sources, the collision took place near a private hospital on the Rajpura-Chandigarh highway.

Man killed in mishap

A 40-year-old man was killed as he was hit by a private bus near the Spice chowk at Industrial Area here today.

Local St Xavier’s School will face St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, Chandigarh, while Little Flower Convent School will cross swords with St Kabir School, Sector 26, in the semifinal of the 8th Emily Gosain Basketball Tournament here.
In the first quarterfinal played here today, St Xavier’s School defeated St Teresa School 26-23. Anoop (10) and Dinesh (6) were they key scorers for the wining side, while Mohit (10) helped St Teresa School reduce the margin. In another match, St Xavier’s School overcame Saupins School, 45-42. Khushman (17) and Navjot (10) ensured their team’s victory. In third game, St Kabir got the better of Delhi Public School, Pinjore, 34-30, with key contributions from Garv (12) and Gutegh (8) for the team. Vikalp scored 12 points for the losing side.

Delhi eves pip Punjab to title
Chandigarh, November 29
In an exciting match, Delhi beat Punjab in the final to win the girls’ title in the 24th sub-junior national softball championship at the PEC grounds here today.
Delhi got the better of Punjab 11-10. Earlier, in the semi-finals, Punjab defeated Chandigarh 7-3 and Delhi beat Kerala 6-5.Delhi players celebrate their win in the softball national championship in Chandigarh on Tuesday. In boys’ super league matches, Chattisgarh trounced Jammu and Kashmir 11-1 and Kerala blanked Chattisgarh 6-0.
