If women are giving a tough competition to men in every possible field, men are ready to fight it out on their turf

LOOKS MATTER: Varun Sharma

That women take a long time to dress up has been the plot of many a tale, but a recent study questions what's long been accepted. The study, based on a survey for Travelodge, has found that on an average, men spend 81 minutes a day on personal grooming, including cleansing, toning, moisturising, shaving, styling hair and choosing clothes, while women get hair, clothes and make-up done in just 75 minutes!

A quick conversation with city guys, it seems like personal grooming tops their personal agenda as well. "Physical appearance is as important as inner beauty," says Varun Sharma, a model who works with HCL, "because not everyone who comes across has the time to know the 'real' you." Varun does pay attention to his looks even when not on the ramp, though the amount of time he spends getting ready varies from occasion to occasion. Roughly, he takes around 20 minutes in getting ready, which is apart from bathing. "After all, men too spend time matching shirts and trousers, setting hair and other stuff," shares Varun.

Now that guys spend time cleaning, moisturising, gelling, styling hair, applying perfumes…the time they spend on getting ready seems to be much more than the previous generation.

"Well, I don't think it makes sense to compare habits with the previous generation. Things have changed drastically over the last few years. In a completely new set up, it is obvious that habits would be new as well," opines Varun.

In a world where appearance matters a lot, Ayush Garg is another collegiate who is part of the tribe. "Objectively speaking, for youngsters spending more time on one's appearance than anything else is a given. Now that you ask, I am actually thinking about the long time that I spend in front of the mirror," he says.

Men are also heading towards salons. "While 10 years back men-women ratio in a salon was 10:90, today it is 50:50," says Rachit Malhotra, director, Femina Plus-44. The popular looks for the uber cool today are that of Rockstar and Don 2. The Tide goes in favour of those who take looking good business seriously, but there are few who stand against the trend. "Well, I could never fathom my peer's obsession with looks," says Rajat Sain, third-year mass communication student. "Though one must look presentable but spending hours in front of the mirror, when you can very well use that time doing something productive, does not make sense to me," he says.

Well, the choice remains in your hands!

Men matters

A study comparing men and women's dressing-up habits based on a survey for Travelodge Researchers also found that on an average men spend 23 minutes in the shower, compared to 22 minutes for women. Men then take 18 minutes on their shaving regime, compared to 14 minutes for women despite them having to trim legs and more. Men take a minute longer - 10 minutes - on cleansing, toning and moisturising. Choosing an outfit is also a time-consuming operation for men, who take 13 minutes for it as compared to 10 minutes for women.

Bollywood calling
In Chandigarh to promote his film I Am Singh, Gulzar Chahal, who makes his Bollywood debut as a lead actor, shares how he got under the skin of his character
Jasmine Singh

Gulzar Chahal
ACT ONE: Gulzar Chahal

There are many who believe in the end result of a long journey; and then there are those who like to enjoy it — taking a lesson with each passing day. For actor Gulzar Chahal, who makes his debut as a lead actor in Bollywood with I Am Singh, the present state is like a fruitful flight of passion.

The tall, handsome actor, who plays the lead, Ranbir Singh, in the movie, is definitely excited about the flick, but he doesn't rule out the role of destiny and his team in the whole scheme of things.

In Chandigarh to promote his film, Gulzar is all eyes on Bollywood and the new route he has taken.

"As an actor I always look forward to exploring new possibilities. With I Am Singh I make my foray in Bollywood. I play Ranbir Singh who fights for his family and his individual identity as a Sikh on a foreign land, abiding by the foreign laws," he says.

Looking him talk passionately about his role, we wonder whether he is out of the character yet. He smiles, ponders for a second before resuming again, "Well let's say it is fifty-fifty. I had lived the life of Ranbir Singh for a good time and felt the humiliation he went through. In fact, I had to go through this racial discrimination when I was visiting my sister in USA. My nick name is Pathan, so the immigration officer grilled me for hours just because of it," his expression is serious and sad.

"Ah, I am out of it but I feel that I lived and justified the character that Puneet Issar, as a director, created," he adds

We know about actors who find it hard to detach themselves from a certain character even after the film is ready!

For Gulzar, the actor in him has just touched and felt the place called Bollywood and he definitely wants more of it.

"I turned down three Punjabi films because of my commitment to I Am Singh. Now, I am getting roles from Bollywood as well," the excitement is back in his voice.

"I am trying the romantic genre in my upcoming Punjabi film," shares Gulzar, who attaches more meaning to films rather than them being just a simple medium of entertainment.

"My father is an ex-IPS officer and he believes in giving back to the society. I want to do the same with my films. I want to send out the right message through my films, along with providing wholesome entertainment."

Somebody is taking films seriously now! "Indeed, I have put my heart and soul into I Am Singh. This is something that every actor says and mind you, it is right!

From dialogues to the look to the feelings — everything was real. I lived a true life during the making of I Am Singh," shares Gulzar, who likes the new journey.

"Let's see how it goes. So far so good," he gives the camera a relaxed smile.

Game's over
Ranbir-Nargis no more a couple

It seems post Rockstar, Pakistani-American model Nargis Fakhri and Ranbir Kapoor are no more interested in being perceived as a couple.

On Wednesday night at a party at the Grand Hyatt, Nargis chose to be accompanied by a female friend, while Ranbir came with his father Rishi Kapoor.

Throughout the evening Ranbir and Nargis were in separate sections of the party. "Nargis and Ranbir hardly spoke to one another. This was an important evening for Nargis, as it was her first appearance independent of the 'Rockstar' events," said a source from the party. — IANS

MAKE yourself up!
During this wedding season, here are a few tips that can help you to get ready for weddings
Sabia Talwar

The wedding season is here and so is the paraphernalia associated with it—the lavish sweet boxes, invitations, what to wear and how to carry yourself, even if you are just a guest for the wedding!

Your attire, make-up, jewellery and hair style are all a part, and the tension one goes through needs no mention! Thankfully, there are experts to help you out. Says Raman Ghai, operational and training head, Strands salon ‘n’ spa, Sector-11, Chandigarh, “Doing your own make-up at home is not difficult at all, especially when you have to attend a random wedding as compared to the make-up for a family wedding where you need to go to the parlour for sure. Applying a proper base is very important, be it summer or winter as none of us have a flawless skin these days.”

She adds, “Mineral make-up is available these days, which is very safe to use. As for how to drape a saree, there should be more pleats and the palla should be taken on the shoulder. It should be teamed up with stylish blouses.”

Getting ready at home might be a little bit of a hassle, but certain things should be done beforehand to make things easy. Says Salochna Ahuja, a Chandigarh-based beauty expert, “For applying make-up, cleansing of your face is a must. So is a hair wash, which should be done earlier in the day. While applying make-up, a light base matching with your skin tone should be applied. Eye make-up should complement your attire. Glittery effect is not in these days; the dusky and smoky look definitely is.”

She adds, “Various hairstyles can be made and hair accessories can be pinned up on one side, be it artificial or just fresh flowers. As for the sarees, a little help might be needed from a family member.”

Nowadays ‘extremes’ are really in, so either nude make-up or smoky make-up is preferred. And everyone is not keen on wearing sarees; so suits are an alternative for them. “For your suits to have a different look, dupattas must be free-flowing without any pinning. As for sarees, double draping is in trend,” says Richa Aggarwal, managing director, Cleopatra salon, Chandigarh.

She adds, “Before applying make-up, cold compression with ice must be done on the face or it should be washed with cold water. After this, moisturizer should be applied so that the base does not break up. Lots of lip gloss should be applied and eyes highlighted for the party look. While making a hairstyle at home, one can do a bit of back combing for that extra bounce. Fresh flowers like orchids and rose buds should be put on hair.”

So, are you ready with your best look?

Help yourself

n Applying a light base is a must and that too should match with your skin tone.
n As it is winter time, cream foundation is a must.
n If there are three to four colours in your dress, the most prominent colour should be picked up for eye make-up.
n Thick eye-liner of any colour should be put with two coats of mascara and a neatly applied kajal.
n For lips, hot colours are in - hot red and hot pink.
n Hair spray is only needed if you have put on rollers.
n Hair accessories, especially fresh flowers from a nearby florist, can be used on the hair.
n If wearing a suit, the dupatta should be left free flowing.
n Sarees should be draped in unique styles with proper pinning.

HEART talk
Talk it out
Parvesh Rana

I am a 32-year-old man and divorced. I am doing pretty well in my business, and I don’t intend to marry, but my parents are hell bent on getting me married again. I am not against the institution; I just want to take sometime before I make the commitment again. What do you suggest I should do?

Rakesh, Chandigarh

Speak to your parents. You are not old and you are doing well in your business. I don’t see why they should not understand you. If you have anything other than this in your mind be clear with them. You are not against marriage, which means you will eventually settle. All you need is to talk to them.

I am a teenager and I want to pursue acting. I have got my portfolio done and I want to move to Mumbai now. My parents insist that I should finish my studies first. I have spoken to few directors and they say it is the right age and time to start working in this industry. I am confused.

Sonia, Chandigarh

Coming from the entertainment industry, I can tell you there is nothing like an early age to start working. You just concentrate on your studies, maybe later on move to Mumbai. You should always have a fall-back option. What will happen if you don’t get work in the industry? Studies never go waste, so concentrate on studies and in the meantime you can do some things side by side, like act in plays or do small roles if that doesn’t affect your studies.

Face of a family
According to the researchers, the cues underlying family resemblance for both male and female faces are processed within the same brain space

A new study has shed light on our ability to identify members of a family from facial structures. "Being able to see the family resemblance between faces that have some underlying difference, such as the difference between male and female faces, is an ability that is not well understood and merits further investigation to work out how visual information about faces is organized," said author Harry J. Griffin, PhD, of the Department of Cognitive, Perceptual and Brain Sciences at University College London.

The researchers conducted two experiments using original and synthesized cross-gender "sibling" faces that resemble each other and "anti-sibling" faces that have the opposite characteristics of the original face.

In the first experiment, participants were asked to identify male-female sibling pairs.

Participants chose the sibling pair significantly more often than the randomly selected cross-gender pairings and the random pairings more often than the anti-face pairings.

"This pattern of results shows that when we see a face, we compare it to an average face for that gender, allowing us to pick out only the face cues that tell us about family membership while disregarding the irrelevant gender cues," explained Griffin.

In the second experiment, using the visual adaptation method of biasing an observer's perception of objects through prolonged exposure, participants were shown a male anti-sibling generated from a female face.

The results indicate that adapting to the male face clearly influenced the perceived identity of a subsequent identity-ambiguous female face.

This implies that the cues underlying family resemblance for both male and female faces are processed within the same brain space, according to the researchers.

"We used this simple, non-invasive method to show that the facial appearance of men and women are processed by overlapping populations of brain cells," stated Griffin.

"This takes our understanding beyond the conceptual and gives a picture of how the brain actually works," he added. — ANI

Star track
Vidya Balan: I was a naughty child

Vidya Balan
Good old days: Vidya Balan

Everybody misses their childhood days and dreamy star Vidya Balan is no exception. She reminisces about her teenage years.

Naughty childhood

I was a good child but sometimes naughty. Only my parents knew I was a naughty kid because in front of others I was a good child. But I always listened to my parents. But yes, like everyone I too miss my childhood days, playing with cousins, waiting for the summer vacation, festivals, and the joy of buying something new. Those feelings are simply gone by the time you grow up.

School memories

I was an average student in school. So, no complaints. I had a few friends and we enjoyed a lot during school.

I was always interested in films so I used to watch a lot of films at that time. And I was an Amitabh Bachchan fan so I don't know how many times I watched Sholay, Deewar and all and I still love him. But today what I see is studies have become quite easy. I mean you don't need to strain yourself. But during our time examination time was really tough.

Rocking days

I was active in extra-curricular activities in college. I am a St Xavier student so Malhar was the time to rock and I was in the organising committee. We used to study together in college. How much I miss those walks by the sea! But I can say I have enjoyed every phase of my life so no regrets.

Today's youth

I am surprised by the energy and potential today's youth has. At the age of sixteen they know what they want to do and some even start their career. I really like the way they are improving.

New talent

I think Anushka Sharma is the best! What energy and smile she has! I really loved Band Baaja Baraat and loved Anushka in the film. Among guys, I think Ranbir Kapoor and Imran are really nice. —HRM

Confessions of a desi boy

John Abraham
All is well: John Abraham

John Abraham talks about his bonding with Salman Khan and about his Desi Boyz co-star Akshay Kumar. He also talks about friendship.

Salman & me

I have read stories about me and Salman not getting along. Frankly speaking, I have never met Salman personally or got the time to bond with him. So, there is nothing wrong or sour between us. When I went to the Bigg Boss sets he welcomed me. I think he is one of the best actors and entertainers of Bollywood.

Few friends

I have few friends but whoever I have I am very close to them. But friendship just doesn't mean that you need to hangout with them. Whenever you need them or they need you, we are all there for each other. And because of our busy schedules sometimes we don't get time to meet friends for years but when you meet it's like a house on fire. Like I and Abhishek hardly get time to catch up but whenever we meet we spend quality time. He is the most entertaining and good-hearted person. But I have many friends outside the industry too.

Real khiladi

To me Bollywood's Khiladi is Akshay Kumar. I have shot with him so I have seen his fitness levels. He works out every morning. He is not bulky or beefy but his discipline has kept him fit, lean, and handsome. It was my pleasure working with him.

What's with Dostana?

That you have to ask Karan. Abhishek and I are ready but the script is being prepared still. I want people to enjoy Desi Boyz because it is a fun ride.

Kareena's dream role

Kareena Kapoor would love to reprise Padmini Kolhapure's role in her grandfather Raj Kapoor's Prem Rog. She feels this is his best film.

Love struck: Kareena Kapoor

Hair he comes

Ricky Bahl's multiple unshaven and shaved looks in the film kept the cast and crew waiting for days to shoot - especially the looks that required the right amount of facial hair to appear!

Big B traces source of morphed pictures

Bollywood Mega star Amitabh Bachchan has finally found the original photo which was the inspiration behind his grand-daughter's morphed picture circulating online.

The 69-year-old actor, who has been forthcoming with details surrounding the birth of Abhishek and Aishwarya's daughter on November 16, disappointed fans by refusing to share the picture of the newborn, saying it was too personal.

He, however, was confounded to find a picture of Aishwarya and her daughter doing the rounds on internet only to discover that it was a fake. Bachchan has now tracked the original picture and has posted it along with the morphed one.

Ladies and gentlemen of the EF (extended family) world, I present to you the picture being circulated and below that, the original from where the morphing was done. A smart piece of work. — PTI

Who's the prettiest of them all?
We caught Bollywood's pretty ladies who attended various events in Mumbai over the past week in our candid camera. Take a look at what they wore and how they looked

Rich look
Sonali Bendre with Goldie Behl:
The smoky make-up and wavy hair aregreat. The rich teal is great for the winter and she wears the draped dress well. We like the sparkly golden-black pumps. She is the epitome of sophistication. She is maturing like a bottle of old wine.

Secret weapon
Dia Mirza:
She looks fresh and adorable in this lovely lilac dress from Victoria's Secret. She keeps it comfortable by wearing gladiators.

Friendly appearance
Urmila Matondkar:
We like the red lips and the Rachel-like (is she following Jennifer Aniston in Friends?) hair and it is good to see her after a while. We don't think much of the snake-skin print dress. It doesn't fit her well and makes her look flabby. The shoes are no prize, either.

Lady in red
Deepika Padukone:
She is wearing a Diane von Furstenberg dress and the striking red looks great on her. We like the simplicity.

Shining bright
Shraddha Kapoor:
The pretty girl is glowing. She gives a regular top a new twist by pairing it with loose pants. We are glad she has kept the rest of the look plain to draw attention to the trend-setting shiny pants. She looks fresh and elegant becaused of her pulled back hair. — HRM

Controversy’s child

Payal Rohatgi seems to be looking for a controversy as she has slotted porn star Sunny Leone, who has recently entered the Bigg Boss house, with heroines Zarine Khan and Katrina Kaif. She has called them all British imports in her tweet, saying. “Don’t Zarine Khan, Katrina Kaif and Sunny Leone look alike? British imports in our country.” Payal has started round one—let’s wait for the repartee.

Revelation time

In Zee TVs Shobha Somnath Ki, Shobha (Srishty Rode) has been in trouble and in the custody of Bhanuman (Siddharth Vasudev) but soon her reality will be exposed to Bheemdev. He will meet Shobha’s friends who will reveal that Soma is the real Shobha.

Walking into trouble

Post her beau Sushant Singh Rajput’s exit from Zee TVs show Pavitra Rishta, rumours are that Ankita Lokhande, who plays Archana, has been giving the unit members a tough time. Earlier, perhaps staying on sets with or without work was not an issue but now she rushes off set as soon as possible and has delayed shooting schedules too. The unit is dumbfounded by her intolerable behaviour. It was rumoured that she even got into an argument with some production people and walked off the set. Her tantrums were the reason she was replaced from Comedy Circus earlier.

No time for food

Madhuri Dixit was the face of channel Food Food and also a judge in their cooking-based reality show. Though she shot for most part of the show, but during the finale, she was missing and couldn’t shoot it as she was busy shuttling between India and US as her family was shifting to Mumbai. Ultimately the show ended without Madhuri. Hmm…

Love lore

Kinshuk Mahajan
Getting candid: Kinshuk Mahajan

Television actor Kinshuk Mahajan, famous for his romantic roles in Bidaai and Chand Chhupa Badal Mein, will now be seen in a different role as Pintu Singh in Zee TV’s Afsar Bitiya. Here he gets candid about love, romance and all that it entails.

What’s your definition of romance?

For me, it’s nothing but being very comfortable with your partner and that your partner should feel the same. I think there is no specific definition of romance as it has to be felt and experienced.

According to you, what is love and romance?

Love and romance are same words and I feel that true romance is when a couple are truly in love with each other.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Yes, I strongly believe as I fell in love with Divya at the first sight.

How would you like to be wooed?

By sheer innocence, sensible talking, attitude. Rest is secondary.

Do you feel that love is blind?

No, I don’t believe that love is blind but I feel love can see everything good in your partner. Looks do matter but ultimatly, it is a pure heart and soul that matters most.

Does the definition of romance change after marriage?

Some people say that everything changes in love after marriage but I don’t feel so. Frankly speaking I haven’t yet experienced it.

What are your favourite romantic films?

From Hollywood, I love Titanic while among our Bollywood films it has to be Dilwale Dulaniyaa Le Jaayenge.

Your favourite love song is..

I don’t remember now but whenever I see Divya, my sweetheart, I think of one song Meri Soni meri tammanna jhooth nahi hain mera…I just love the lyrics of the song. — HRM
