A Date with One!
Is there something about 11.11.11 that is special? We try to find out
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Once again, numbers have conjured up an astrological and numerological maze for us. For the last few days, it has been impossible to avoid seeing advertisements or talks heralding an event known simply by its date - 11.11.11. Google has joined hands in satisfying the curious minds and if you click 11.11.11, don’t be surprised to see over 6,960,000 results!

Though we read that all over the world people would gather for ceremonies, rituals, meditation meetings or prayers on November 11, an interesting quote that we read was, “people would use sound, breath, instruments or visualisation to invoke an outpouring of energetic and spiritual light.”

Well, what has a number got to do with spiritualism? “Though this date, 11.11.11, is the eleventh time since January 1 2001 that a date representing a month, day, or year is repeating itself on the calendar, but it has a vibration and resonance that will not come again for 100 years,” says astrologer P. Khurrana. He adds, “11.11.11 cannot be divided by any number, so this holds a great significance and will bring unexpected gain or loss. Though there is a lot of speculation regarding this number, I would say people born on 2, 11, 20 or 29 should expect good news before December 27 since 2 is their lucky number. Though there is nothing bad that is going to happen, people who fear for the worst should donate anything white in colour.”

An interesting fact is that it’s only during this decade (2001-2012) that the month, day and year repeat themselves 12 times. Each of these dates 1.1.1, 2.2.2, 3.3.3, 4.4.4, through to 12.12.12 all have a high frequency, a unique resonance and a symbolic numerological meaning. “Number 1 is the number of the creator - god. And when it doubles up and resonates itself, it becomes 11, which is a master vibration number; a messenger number that brings revelation and inspiration from a higher plain. That is why this date holds significance,” says astrologer Madan Gupta Saptu.

Differing from others and giving a logical explanation, numerologist Khetr Pal says, “People are talking about 11.11.11, but this is 11.11. 2011 and 8 is the total of all these numbers. Eight is a significant number in itself and holds a mystery, but nothing evil or bad is going to happen on this day; it’s like any other ordinary day.”

That’s some logic, but if you go by some numerology books then Number 1 is the masculine energy, a number that marks new beginnings. The power of the number is even more intensified this year because on November 11, 2011, the number resonates three times and this has the ability to generate awareness in each of us.

“Though the focus is on 11.11.11, the whole year 2011 needs to be addressed. In numerology, the year is a 4 (2+1+1=4) which represents form, foundation, and structure. Therefore, 2011 becomes a turning point where the divine creative spirit, represented by 11.11.11, sets the foundation and transformation of the next generational surge. That is the ultimate power and magnificence of the date - 11.11.11,” says Khetr Pal.

Celebration time

Cashing on 11.11.11, hotel Shivalik View has planned an interesting event at their restaurant Cloud 9. “Considering the craze for the day, 11.11.11 we plan to open our restaurant at 11 am and close at 11 at night. Other than this, on this special day we would invite our guests to be the chefs and they can prepare their own meal. Our chef would be present to help them out,” says chef Vineet Chopra. Well, they are in a way fulfilling your dream desire of becoming a chef, so why not take a chance!

Cheers to eleven...

Brig IJ Singh, Indira Charanjit Singh and Rani Dullat are a happy lot as their birthday is special this year.

Born on November 11, the trio, who came together during their Army tenure (Indira and Rani’s husbands have served in the armed forces) that started during the early 70s, has been together not only during the services but also post retirement.

“We have had many memorable celebrations over the last few years but this one is going to be extra special,” says Brig IJ. The trio has had an exceptional year so far. “For me the royal estate business has been extremely fruitful,” says Brig IJ, who heads Home n Home company post retirement. “More than that, my son-in-law got promoted to the post of a Lt. Col. in 2011,” he says.

For Rani, it has been the year of travel. The most happening one has been her visit to the US. Indira also had her share of travel, but what makes her happier is her daughter’s long awaited placement in the government sector in Mumbai.

Upbeat about the birthday, their agenda for the day is clear — to please respective spouses! Brig IJ is off for a cruise for a week to Istanbul and Spain, and he plans to share the happiness with those not so privileged. — Mona

Model-actor Veena Malik, in Ludhiana for a fashion show, shares how she loves everything Indian
Gurvinder Singh

A big smile comes on the face of Veena Malik, wearing a glitzy pearl black dress, as she talks about India, “I have been treated very well and pampered in India.” She was in Ludhiana to walk the ramp for the first time ever in India during the Blenders Pride Punjab International Fashion Week 2011.

Her India visits have rubbed on to her as she too has turned vegetarian; she feels killing innocent animals is not good. And Veena has taken a liking for idlis as well as South-Indian movies. “I think South-Indian movies are awesome, with all the action and comedy,” she says. If an offer comes her way, she wouldn’t mind lapping it up!

Talking about the new season of Big Boss, she says it has lost its charm as in-fighting is too much this time. “Plus there is no Veena in it, so it doesn’t matter much,” she quips.

Films, TV and fashion keep her engaged equally. In India, three of her movies are under production — Daal Mein Kuchh Kala Hai, Zindagi 50:50 and Tere Naal Love Ho Gya. And there is one item number coming up in one of the movies.

Veena keeps mum about her Swayambar, but about Asif getting indicted in the match-fixing she says he had to face the consequences of his actions. Fashion to her is all about comfort. Talking about Pakistani fashion industry, she says it is growing, while India is already quite fashionable.

Veena is a Punjabi at heart. “Being on the other side of the border doesn’t make much of a difference,” she says. She has grown up in a Punjab ka gaon and loves the vibes of Punjab.

On the ramp

It was glitz, glamour and tradition on the ramp as Riyaz and Reshma Gangji presented their collection on the first night of Punjab International Fashion Week 2011 titled Ethnic Evolution — A bridal collection. Sharp-nosed, chiselled cheeks and slim-bodied men donned the collection of suits followed by the dhoti pants.

Later traditional sherwanis and achkans with heavy craftsmanship were showcased. Maharaja Sherwanis, epitomizing the work of Mughal karigars, real stones and turbans of the eras were part of the collection.

Female models sashayed down the ramp dressed with glittery dresses, which were mostly traditional.

Lehangas, sarees and other dresses were distinctly traditional as well as contemporary. “In this collection I have tried to include designs that was prevalant in the royal attires more than 300 years ago,” says Riyaz.

Marilyn Monroe’s teenage photos on sale

Photos of a teenage Marilyn Monroe as a model and a letter that she wrote to her foster mother will be up for auction next month. The model shots were taken by photographer Joseph Jasgur when Monroe was still Norma Jean, a 19-year-old aspiring model.

There are a variety of shots that range from atop high buildings in Los Angeles to photos on the Zuma Beach. Her letter to foster mother Grace Goddard is expected to sell for over 50,000 dollars by the auction house Julien’s.

In the eight-page letter she talks about her marriage to Jimmie Dougherty and her aspirations to a better career.

She also tells Goddard of her meeting with US Army photographer David Conover, who helped launch her into modelling.

After Connor’s encouragement Monroe joined Blue Book Modelling Agency where she met photographer Joseph Jasgur.

“These photographs and copyrights become available for the very first time and the complete archive and early image copyrights will be sold exclusively at this auction event,” a spokesman said. Other items at the auction include Nolan Miller’s signature black and red gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor in Poker Alice, costumes and props from the 2000 film The Grinch, Sean Connery’s 007 Walther-Ppk .38 calibre pistol from Never Say Never Again and costumes from the cult film The Big Lebowski. — ANI

This winter, keep the dryness away from your skin
Sabia Talwar

Winter is all about caring for yourself as you are prone to falling ill. White patches find friends with your skin in this season and the lips feel dry as well. And one needs to keep the skin and lips moisturised with body lotions as well as lip balms.

Says Bani Sahni, who looks after the marketing of Wine & Cheese, Sector-7, Chandigarh, "I face this problem in every changing season, so I make it a point to use body butter and strawberry as well as raspberry lip balms. I regularly go for oil body massage to keep my skin supple and relaxed."

Using a good quality lip gloss keeps your lips healthy and gives them a nice sheen. So, lip balm and gloss are a must-have, especially in a girl's bag, during winter. Even boys can do the same!

"Even we boys face the same dryness problems, so I take care of my lips by applying a lip balm now and then," says Rohan Bansal, a B.Com second-year student, GGDSD College. He adds, "I never used to apply body lotions but this time I'll use them."

As from the expert's bag, Dr Maleeka Sachdev who runs a clinic in Sector-18, Chandigarh, says, "The first thing people should do is have lots of liquids and use more of body washes, as the soaps contain detergents." She adds, "Immediately after the bath (not too long though) and that too with luke-warm water, pat dry your body with towel and pack body lotions on it as it locks the water in the skin."

Some people like applying oil to their bodies and feel no need for body lotions, for them Dr Kavina Puri, dermatologist at Chaitanya Hospital, Sector-44, Chandigarh, suggests, "Oil does create a barrier for the skin but it does not produce any further hydration, so in no way can oil replace body lotions. Body lotions must not be applied to your face as there are face creams available according to various skin types." She adds, "For the lips you can use lip balms with SPF 15 and above."

This winter, take good care of yourself!

n Those suffering from acne on back or upper body must not apply oil and use non-greasy products.

n One should avoid taking a long bath and that too with very warm water, which is a major reason behind dryness.

n Body lotions must be applied after patting dry your body with a towel.

Trend Setter
Style file

The entire charm of keeping it stylish is being timeless. Keeping it effortlessly stylish is graphic designer Rishi Arora. Here is what he has to stay when it comes to fashion and style.

Your sense of style is…

I like to keep it formal yet classy. It’s not essential to always stay casual and trendy. Formals tend to add a bit of charm to an outfit.

Latest addition in your wardrobe...

Of course a formal, classic Esprit shirt

Brand freak or street junkie?

It is not possible to find good quality in unbranded clothes, which makes me a brand freak. Esprit and CKs latest line is something I would recommend.

Choose a look; sporty, glamorous or chic

Glamorous. Being formal is second to keeping it glamorous.

Your style icon would be…

Aamir Khan. He is one of those few celebrities who know how to keep it elegant and can pull of any look with élan.

So, who's the worst dressed celebrity around?

I feel everyone has their own sense of style and dressing so I won't like to comment on that.

One fashion trend you just don't understand…

Men wearing bell bottoms. It is not a trend I would ever follow or recommend to anyone.

Your take on accessories

Accessories are an important part of any outfit. They are an essential component of dressing today. I can't do without watches, belts and my aviators.

One thing that boosts your confidence?

Work tends to hold a person together. If there is a good job which keeps you busy, nothing provides more confidence.

Moufid Aziz is the handsome and exotic Brazilian-Arabic model you have seen in commercials with Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif.

Hailing from the south of Brazil, his modelling talent and career have taken him to the ramps of Japan, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Spain, Portugal and other places. He has modelled for Gucci, Chanel, Ermenegildo Zegna, Volkswagen, Blackberry, and other luxe brands.

Imtiaz Ali has an eye for perfect casting and he casts foreigners in distinctly Indian roles. So after casting Giselle Monteiro as a Punjabi belle in Love Aaj Kal and Nargis Fakhri as a Kashmiri Pandit in Rockstar, he cast Moufid as her on-screen Kashmiri Pandit businessman husband. It was Moufid’s striking looks that got him the part. So, read on to know more about the surprise package in Rockstar. We are sure the movie will get him noticed.

What do you like about Mumbai? How has the city treated you?

I love the people of Mumbai. Every day is a new day.  The city has been very good to me. I get everything that I want from here and I hope I am able to give something back as well.

What do you hate about Mumbai? Are there any particular bad memories?

I find the word “hate” a bit too strong. I prefer to say I don’t like the roads and the traffic. Thank God, I have no bad memories so far!

Which are the Hindi films you have seen? Which ones did you like?

I have seen many movies. The ones I like are 3 idiots, Om Shanti Om, Rock On, Jab we Met and My name is Khan.

Who are your favourite actors and actresses?

I like Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Bollywood and in Hollywood I love Johnny Depp and Julia Roberts.

Tell us about shooting for Rockstar and shooting in Kashmir.

I had a great time shooting for Rockstar. We had difficult night shoots. We joked and played a lot on the sets… I learnt a lot with Imtiaz and Ranbir. I did not shoot in Kashmir.

How did you get along with Nargis, Imtiaz, and Ranbir? Any memories?

These three guys were super nice and good to me. Nargis is a good friend and a great actor. We spent time off the sets when we could. Ranbir is very funny and professional and he always makes people laugh. Imtiaz is super kind and helpful. He is always focused on the sets and doing his best. I can say that I had a fantastic time with everyone.

Did you plan to become a model and subsequently an actor?

I never planned to become a model but the modeling career really worked out for me. It is too early for me to talk about acting.

Tell us about your family back in Brazil.

My parents live in the south of Brazil and we have a company that sells heavy wood for builders. They are very happy with my first upcoming movie. I expect a great show from the movie and hope people enjoy my work.

Heroine gets going

The shooting for Heroine with Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal begins in November end.

The team is thrilled, especially Madhur Bhandarkar. He will shoot for six months and release the film in mid 2012.

One for Arjun

Katrina Kaif is close to Arjun Kapoor; he is her rakhi brother. She is also close to key people in YRF. So, she has offered to do an item song in his debut film, Ishaqzaade and a song is being prepared for her. Sweet! Parineeti Chopra is the female lead in the film.

Print worthy

Neha Dhupia knows how to stay in the limelight. She has signed up to endorse a construction and infrastructure company through print ads.

She knows those people very well and thought it would be fun and a different endorsement to do.

Akshay’s desi streak

Whether his films do well or not, Akshay Kumar is a much-loved star in India and abroad. He talks about his upcoming film Desi Boyz, working with John again, and the gorgeous leading ladies of the film.

Simply hilarious

Desi Boyz is a fun film and I enjoyed shooting the entire film. The script is hilarious and a very different comedy from what I have done. It has emotion and comedy both. It is directed by Rohit Dhawan, who has got his father’s talent in him to direct comedy films.

Leading ladies

For the first time I shared screen space with Chitrangada. I have seen her films but they were serious. For the first time, she will be seen in a commercial film and I was surprised by her screen presence. She is a wonderful actress and very beautiful. I have worked with Deepika earlier and she is a sweetheart. Both of them are very talented and are looking simply gorgeous in the film.

My friend John

I don’t know about others but I feel John is one of the most wonderful human beings I have ever met. He is very spirited and positive. He works really hard. We have worked together in Garam Masala. At that time we were not this close but while shooting for Desi Boyz we came to know each other better and we are good friends now. I would say John has improved a lot from that time and he has a great sense of comedy. And he has a good body and in Force his body looked the best. I hope audiences will like our chemistry on-screen and we will be offered more films together (Smiles).

Desi memories

As I said, it was a memorable film. I have never played such a role ever with so much of energy. Rohit has told me that the film borrows from real life and he has written the script from a real incident and added a desi tadka to it.

Hindi only

We are born and brought up in India and we love to watch Hindi cinema. And, I have always loved to speak in Hindi. Even today I prefer watching a Hindi film over any English film.

Racy bonding

Ameesha Patel has been bonding big time with Saif Ali Khan on the sets of Race 2.

They have previously worked together in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. PS: Kareena and Ameesha didn’t really get along.

Too playful!

Enthused about his forthcoming film Players, which is a remake of the 2003 American thriller The Italian Job, actor Abhishek Bachchan today said the flick was a quintessential masala movie.

“The trailer of Players does not remind you of The Italian Job, it promises to be a masala Hindi movie. This is an exciting time in my life,” the soon-to-be father said.

Referring to the first trailer of the flick unveiled last week, Abhishek said “it left his blood pumping”.

“One of the reasons I accepted the film was for the directors Abbas-Mustaan. And the other being I had grown up watching and loving the original film. I still remember Michael Caine’s acting,” Abhishek said.

Players also stars Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Bobby Deol and Omi Vaidya. —PTI

Monster remake

With the 60th Anniversary of Godzilla in 2014, Hollywood filmmakers are once again attempting to resurrect the legendary monster in a remake.

Directed by Gareth Edwards of the Monsters fame, the new remake is currently under development at Legendary Pictures, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Though initially, David Goyer (The Dark Knight) worked on the script, it has been reported that Max Borenstein has now been approached to write it instead.

Borenstein is seen as an up-and-coming scriptwriter, closely associated with Legendary Pictures. He recently turned in a draft of Art of the Steal and is also working on a Jimi Hendrix biopic for the Studio. — PTI

Shaw time!

Chocolate-boy Naman Shaw, who had been missing for a while, is back on television. He is all set to replace Anuj Thakur in Imagine TV's Beendh Banunga Ghodi Chadunga in the lead role, Jai. While Jai makes an entry in the show, we quiz Naman about this exciting opportunity.

Why did you choose to play Jai?

This is my second show with the channel. My earlier show Rakt Sambandh was on Imagine TV too. I have worked with them and I enjoyed the experience. I chose the role because the show is popular. The story of Beendh Banunga is something I have never done before.

Is replacing an actor advantage or disadvantage?

Obviously, a disadvantage. But this character is different. Jai, anyway, has been missing from the show since the past one month. He was in Singapore. After he returns, his whole personality will be changed. His look, style, outfit and everything. I was very confident that I could play this character.

Were you asked to copy the old Jai?

No. In fact, I was asked to portray it just the way I want. The character is totally changed now. You will see it as the show will progress. And hopefully, there won't be any comparisons as they are two different personalities.

How different is the character from the others you have done?

It is very different from what I had done earlier. That's the reason I opted for it. Be the looks, style, or the way he deals with things, everything is different about him. It's close to how I am in real life. Playing a role similar to real life is more fun.

What do you like about Jai?

Jai is a complete family guy and very simple. He is a hero. He helps people. He is like the typical hero of television. Also, I believe I am like him in real life.

After Rakt Sambandh, what kept you busy?

I was on a sabbatical. I took a break of three months and went back home to spend some time with my family.

How do you look back on your career? What has been your claim to fame?

It's great to see the way the audience appreciated my characters so far. I feel my claim to fame has been my first character as Pushkar in Kasamh Se. It was my first show, so obviously it's very special for
me. Pushkar's character has been the closest to my heart.

In one line, how would you describe yourself?

Simple, positive and a guy who believes in nothing but karma.

What's the craziest thing you have ever done?

I tried bungee-jumping last year in Bangkok. I think it's one of the craziest things I have ever done. Also, I want to try sky-diving.

Pyar ke side effects

In Sony's Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, while Dr Nidhi (Kritika Kamra) is back at the hospital, Dr Mallika (Rukhsar) is irked by it. As Dr Ashutosh (Mohnish Behl) isn't well, she will make life hell for Nidhi at the hospital, by loading her with work and less respite. After Mallika's marriage proposal was turned down by Ashutosh, she realised that Nidhi has feelings for him and she will try to keep her away from him.

Anil's desi 24

Anil Kapoor's association with Jack Bauer seems to have rubbed off on him as he has bought the rights of the hit American TV series 24 for a desi version. Of course, he will play the hero on the Indian version. He was seen in a cameo in the last season of the Amercian show. After a year of negotiations, the Hollywood studios locked the deal and Anil plans to air the show on a popular channel and also dubbed it in various regional languages.

More drama in store

In Zee TV's Pavitra Rishta, not just the new Manav aka Hiten Tejwani but Archana's dad too will return in the upcoming episodes.

While the Karanjkar house is being auctioned, Manohar and Manav will return, adding further drama. Archana would not be able to save the house. So will Manohar's return help her?

New Releases
Rockstar

Producer: Dhilin Mehta

Director: Imtiaz Ali

After the success of Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal, director Imtiaz Ali is ready to take the centre-stage with his keenly-awaited film Rockstar starring Ranbir Kaoor and newbie Nargis Fakhri. Ranbir Kapoor may look all snazzy and a true rockstar in this film, but his character is simple who does not smoke or drink. He rebels against the system and Sadda haq .. the song has him rebelling against established norms.

To get into the character of a rockstar, Ranbir travelled to Chennai and stayed with the music director AR Rahman to understand a musician's personality better. Interestingly Ranbir's grand uncle, the late Shammi Kapoor plays a shehnai maestro and his guru in Rockstar.

The soundtrack of the film has been composed by musical genius AR Rahman. The film has been shot in Prague, Delhi and Kashmir. Ranbir's look, styled by Aalim and costume designed by Akki Narula are already in the news. Newbie Nargis Fakhri, who is half-Czech and half-Pakistani, plays Ranbir's love interest in the film.
