Surinder Bhardwaj

Fatehgarh Sahib, November 10
The two-day seminar on “Human Trafficking and Related Crimes” concluded on Wednesday at the auditorium of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College.
Ludhiana DIG MF Farooki was the resource person. He said kidnap cases were on the rise in the district and the police was not dealing with such cases seriously.

“Those involved in human trafficking take the advantage of the fact and which is why reports related to missing persons have increased manifold,” said the DID.

The seminar was attended by representatives of various NGOs from all over the state, advocates, professors and police officers from other districts and intellectuals from society.

RS Khatra, SSP, presided over the seminar.

The DIG added that at times girls after having a fight with their parents fled from their houses and parents avoided approaching the police.

But there are chances of these girls being kidnapped by some gang. Similar is the case with children. He admitted that even the police did not take such cases seriously. He said the greed for money was the main cause for human trafficking.

He said the police alone could not eradicate such social evils as it was the duty of society as a whole to wage a war against the menace. RS Khatra, SSP, said he had instructed police officials in the district to deal with such cases on a priority basis.

He said police officials, along with various NGOs, would launch a campaign to educate people about such crimes.
