Back to NATURE
There are flats, houses, bungalows and then there are farmhouses. With open spaces, orchards and a bungalow, the latter sure is a place to envy! We check out a few lucky ones who own farmhouses in and around Chandigarh.
For an average individual, making one is a dream but for the luckier few, it’s about looking after what the elders in the family left behind. Charandeep Singh, a businessman from Chandigarh, is one of those who has been dedicatedly looking after his two farmhouses. “My grandfather brought a farmland in 1990. Located close to Harnapura, it is now a full-fledged orchard,” he says. Growing kinnows as well as guavas and also looking after a dairy farm, the place has a special place in his heart. “I have always been attached to it,” he smiles. The other farmhouse is where the families get together and hold parties. “It is located near the Perch Dam and was bought in 2006,” he says. Reserved for special family gatherings, it is frequented by the family for pleasure and relaxation. The real essence of owning a farmhouse comes when it ends up becoming your abode. For Ajai Johl, living in a farmhouse has been an experience. Coming from an agricultural background, his family has always been enamoured by open spaces, which became a one-point agenda when he was doing-up his house. “I have experimented with low-cost living. Being a mud-house, it remains a climate-friendly ambience to live in,” he says. Having moved in after 11 weeks of conceptualisation of the idea, Johl has upheld his background in architecture. Nestled close to the IT hub of Chandigarh, his residence-cum-farmhouse is the rule-book of healthy living. For a few others, it is about trying to fulfill their father’s dream. It was my father’s thought that he will live ten years longer if his son has a farmhouse. This guided Anil Puri, a film-distributor from Ludhiana, to acquire the 10 acres of land in village Talliyan. “I bought it for the pure pleasure of it,” smiles Anil. Being the first-ever farm with a tubewell at a height of 6000 feet; the place has a legacy of its own. “Today the farmhouse has over 1,000 plants of peachs, almonds and several other fruit trees,” he says. Living in a small cottage in Ludhiana, he and his wife frequent the farmhouse as and when time permits. Every major investment anyone has ever made will always have memories attached to it. “I remember the thrill of going to the farm and jumping around in the tubewell,” says Sanjit Singh. Located on the Chattbir Zoo Road, the farmhouse is a proud possession of Sanjit Singh’s father, Bhupinder Paul Singh. The old construction of the farmhouse, bought in 1990, had to make way for the present hall made here. Today the farmhouse has been redesigned by the father-son duo and is based on a ‘sun’ theme. “We have several natural looking waterfalls and every kind of plant available in northern region,” says Bhupinder. The waterfalls boast of stones handpicked from several parts of India. “I was particular not to involve any designer or architect. Whatever is being done is by the family,” he adds. Constantly adding and modifying features is an unsaid rule for the Sunshine Garden. vasudha@tribunemail.com

The everlasting Bond
James Bond is preparing for his 23rd adventure on the big screen with the next film Skyfall, which will see Daniel Craig returning as the fictional spy for the third time.
Directed by Academy-award-winner Sam Mendes, the new 007 film will go into production on November 7 with a release date set for October 26, 2012 in UK and November 9, 2012 for North America, Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced here today while presenting the cast of the new movie, titled Skyfall. In the new film, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. “We’re so delighted to have Sam Mendes direct Skyfall and be working once again with Daniel Craig. We’ve a great script, an extraordinary cast and an incredibly talented creative team for this latest James Bond adventure,” said Wilson and Broccoli.
The film, from Albert R Broccoli’s Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, is written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and John Logan. Apart from Craig and Judi Dench, the starcast includes some heavyweights names like Oscar-winner Javier Bardem as the Bond nemesis, Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe as Bondgirls. Other names include Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw. The Director of Photography is Roger Deakins, a nine-time Oscar nominee who previously shot ‘Revolutionary Road’ for Mendes. — PTI

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Majestic Bengal tiger, giant hippopotamus, huge crocodiles, striped zebra and colourful birds have their home at Chattbir zoo. How about a visit to this wildlife sanctuary this Saturday?
Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park (formal name for the zoo) has as many as 100 species of animals. A pond with ducks offers a warm welcome to visitors at the zoo, located some 20 kilometres from Chandigarh on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway. Ferry rides (Rs 25 per person) can take you around in the zoo and we strongly recommend that if you are not much of a walker, as the zoo is spread across a sprawling 200 acres. This green expanse makes not only a happy place for curious children, but also a safe haven for dating couples. A walk in all green or sitting together next to a shallow lake away from the humdrum of life makes for a romantic date after all! It's interesting to see a variety of animals, all in one place, sharing enclosures next to each other. It's the monkeys first (yes, they are a favourite with children still). If you are lucky, you can see majestic royal tiger. Leopards usually don't disappoint the visitors and usually one or two greet the onlookers at the edges of the cage. With a jaguar in as well, they offer an interesting study of the spot patterns. While the leopard usually has rounder, smaller spots, the jaguar has small spots inside the polygonal rosettes. Tiger, of course, has striking striped coat. It's the bear in the zoo that gets most visitors when he playfully dances around. Hippos enjoying a bath in the pond is another common sight. Elephants in their huge enclosure offer a pretty sight as well. You can spot them playing with soil or water! It's the lion safari that offers a unique experience. A totally covered small bus takes you to the lions' abode. A meandering, bumpy drive gives a glimpse of a lion or two in the open. If you are lucky, you can catch the majestic walk of the king of the jungle or be satisfied by the regal look of the resting king! A zebra, different varieties of deer, a dedicated aviary complex (has not only pigeons, doves and parrots but also peacocks and white peafowl); the stately emu - there are many other species to be seen. The boards next to the enclosures provide interesting details (a jaguar's zoo diet is four kilos of buffalo meat while gharials gorge on fish). It's not possible to take in all the beauty that this zoo offers, especially for the children, so there are small huts that offer seating and a few eateries for snacking. You can take your camera and vehicle by paying a fee, but we recommend walking and taking a ferry ride over your own car. Probably you don't want to disturb a hippo or a leopard in its siesta. And how can we forget to mention the log-like crocodiles lounging in the sun, merged with the set-up in such a manner that it is difficult to differentiate them from the background. A map at the beginning gives a detailed overview of the place. You can choose the sections where you want to spend more time. Seeing stately animals fills one with a surge of wonder (even the adults). Though the animals belong to the jungle, they seem pretty fine here for their enclosures try to simulate the natural habitat. Take a walk, enjoy birds frolicking in a shallow pond or go for a lion safari, let you kids and the kid in you enjoy a wild view! mona@tribunemail.com Adopt an animal
If you want to do your bit to save the animals, you can pay for the upkeep of the animal for a month or a year. You can adopt a leopard cat for Rs 850 a month (or Rs 9,800 for a year). Not only will your name be displayed next to the animal you adopt
(take your pick from the variety of birds and animals), but you also get a free entry pass.

GYAN ZONE
The human body has been so made that each centimetre of the physical self has to be moved and used internally and externally. In our daily course of life we do exert our different parts but some remain unused and even some glands become inactive and that is what leads to various ailments or discomforts, mild or severe.
Practicing different asanas gives not only flexibility but activates the body on the whole. Paivvritti Janu Sirhasana is one such asana which stretches and massages each side of the abdomen and chest. It also prepares the body for long hours of sitting in meditation. It is a spiralled head to knee pose. Technique: Sit with the legs about a metre apart. Move the left knee and place the heel against the perineum. Bend forward, inclining the body to the right to hold the right foot with the right hand. The fingers should be in contact with the arch of the foot and the thumb should be on top. Place the elbow on the floor on the inside of the straight leg. Next move the right shoulder slowly down towards the right leg and bring the left arm over the head and grasp the right foot with the left hand. Contracting the arms slowly, pull the right shoulder towards the right foot. Ease the head under the left arm, relax the back and twist the trunk as much as possible so that the chest is open and facing forward. Look towards the ceiling in the final position. Hold the pose for a comfortable length of time, may be two minutes and then release the hands slowly with returning to the upright position. Lowering the left arm over the head. Repeat the movement on the other side. In this asana, breathing should be normal while positioning the legs. Exhale while inclining the trunk and placing the arms and hands into position, then inhale. Exhale while pulling the body side ways. Breathe normally while holding the final position. Lastly inhale while returning to the upright position. Practice once on each side but this continue the pose, if any, discomfort is experienced. This asana, should be practiced after forward and backing bending asanas. It is the twisting asana with a forward bent. It gives the same benefits as Paschimottanasana and Artha matsyendrasana with the added advantage that it gradually stretches the body. Pregnant women or people with back complaints should abstain from performing this asana. It should be done daily. Yogic tip: Do not regard asanas as only a form of exercise but a route to mental and consequently physical development of the body. Asanas are supposed to give a spiritual solace while giving physical comfort. (As told to Poonam Bindra) (Oberai is a Ludhiana-based yoga expert and is a disciple of Swami Gopi Chand Jindal)

Despite the bad press, playing video games may actually spur creativity among boys and girls, independently of their violent or non-violent nature.
A study of nearly 500, 12-year-olds found that the more they played video games, the more creative they were in tasks such as drawing pictures and writing stories. Conversely, the use of cell phones, the internet and computers was unrelated to creativity, the study found. Linda Jackson, professor of psychology at Michigan State University (MSU) and project leader, said the study appears to be the first evidence-based demonstration of a relationship between technology use and creativity. About 72 per cent of US households play video or computer games, says the Entertainment Software Association, according to a Michigan statement. The MSU findings should motivate game designers to identify the aspects of video game activity that are responsible for the creative effects, Jackson said. “Video games can be designed to optimise the development of creativity while retaining their entertainment values such that a new generation of video games will blur the distinction between education and entertainment,” Jackson said. — IANS

Tt’s Rocking
A pure romantic number is mandatory in a Shah Rukh Khan film. The song Dildaara fulfills the criteria in the most appropriate way. The melody is fresh, sober and hummable. Although the winner of the film, Ra. One is indeed Akon’s Chammak Challo, Dildaara makes the album complete with melodious music. Sung by Shafqat Ali and music by Vishal-Shekhar as always doesn’t disappoint. The only regret is the video. If only SRK sported something better than a hair mop going haywire. Fans cite reasons why they give a thumbs up to the track.
On a fresh note Vishal-Shekhar duo has given a fresh treatment to the superhit melody Stand By Me by Ben E King. The mellifluous music of the song Dildaara makes it an instant hit with music lovers. Shafaqat Amanat Ali has once again done a brilliant job, the way he did with his earlier hits, Mitwa and Tere Naina. Lyrics of the song are also not run-of-the-mill. They are fresh and it doesn’t take any effort to learn them. A superhit track for sure!
—Neha Verma, an MCMDAV College student Chart topper The music of Dildaara is very impressive. The love song is another USP of the film besides Akon’s Chammak Challo, special effects and SRK himself. Written by Kumar in Hindi and English mix, the song has very meaningful lyrics unlike most of the songs these days, which only depend on the music. The romantic number will rule the charts in weeks to come. Fusion effect The word melodious describes the song best, which is an intelligent mix of contemporary and classical music. The fusion is very well created that doesn’t sound odd anywhere in the song. It’s the next best song after Chammak Challo in Ra.One. Shah Rukh Khan is looking very adorable and complements the innocence in the song. Vishal Shekhar has once again produced fresh music though it’s inspired (a bit) from the iconic track, Stand by me. |

According to the survey conducted by the Sleep Council on 1,400 women, nearly one in three women admit they are regularly late for work because they feel so shattered in the morning, while one in six have actually rung in sick and one in 10 has got to the office and then fallen asleep. While nine out of 10 women know that a good night’s sleep is the best tonic, only half actually manage a lie-in or an early night. — ANI

The Foodies
A 360 degree view, lush green environs, mountains in a distance; add to this good food and you have Cloud 9, the new restaurant of Hotel Shivalikview in Sector 17.
Done up in a contemporary theme, the restaurant spells elegance (compared to the other restaurants in the hotel) with its bright tapestry and dim lights. And coming back to food, it’s also a little different, especially when it comes to the name of dishes. A multi-cuisine restaurant or a ‘fusion restaurant’ as Chef Vineet Chopra says. Here you can whet your appetite with Indian, Continental, Mexican and Chinese cuisine. “The menu has been prepared keeping in mind the Indian palate,” says Anurag Walia, deputy general manager, Hotel Shivalikview. It serves some great dishes. Other than the usual tamatar ka shorba and badam makhani shorba, try the kale channe ki cappuccino, a coffee-soup fusion. Made of black gram or our humble kaale channe, the soup has a frothy beginning and ends up with a sharp crunchy taste, perfect for the approaching winter evenings. Other than this, surkh lal dhaniya ka shorba is also good. A delicate flavour of tomatoes served with fresh coriander leaves is a nice try. For starters the list in the menu is long. You can try their tandoori duck, ganderi kebab (chicken kebabs that That’s not the end. You can also try sizzlers, Meal for two would cost around Rs 1,000 here. So, check out!

Million dollar target
Some might argue that all stars are overpaid, but Drew Barrymore and Eddie Murphy are in a league of their own, according to a survey conducted by Forbes.com. Top stars can make tens of millions of dollars on a single film, and the payout can be justified when a movie like Pirates of the Caribbean brings in several hundred million at box offices. But when their movies bomb, that’s another story. Barrymore saw her 2010 romantic comedy Going the Distance earn just $17.8 million in ticket sales. Her 2009 movies Everybody’s Fine and Whip It fared worse. Forbes.com said the actress returns just 40 cents for every dollar movie studios spend for her participation. By contrast Murphy’s films returned $2.70 for each dollar he was paid.
Compared to Barrymore, “Murphy is a financial superstar,” wrote Forbes.com’s Dorothy Pomerantz who compiled the list. But Beverly Hills Cop (1984) star Murphy has struggled in recent years, too, with bombs like Imagine That and Meet Dave. He might take solace in his promising new film Tower Heist and upcoming gig hosting the Oscars, Forbes said. The magazine compiled the list from Hollywood’s 40 top-earning actors, and based it on each star’s compensation on his or her last three films and the operating income on those films. From that, Forbes.com derived a return-on-investment.
Oscar winners were not immune from the dubious distinction of most-overpaid, either. Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Denzel Washington and Reese Witherspoon all made the top 10, Witherspoon large owed her spot to her starring role in the James L. Brooks disaster How Do You Know, which Forbes said cost an estimated $120 million to produce but brought in only $50 million worldwide. At least Will Ferrell can take consolation in not being first this time around, after owning the top spot for two years running. This year, he placed third. — Reuters

Successful marks
Twilight actors Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, made their mark on Hollywoood leaving imprints of their hands and feet outside Grauman’s Chinese Theater.
The Twilight stars were greeted by hundreds of screaming fans as they added their hand and footprints to those left by Charlie Chaplin, Frank Sinatra and dozens of other movie icons in past years, in the cement outside the movie theater. “I’ve been so enamored by this ‘business,’ I think this is the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” said 21-year-old Stewart, who plays Bella Swan in the vampire romance.
Pattinson, 25, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the films, thanked the fans for their support. “This is just an incredible honor, as to how young we are, it’s kind of ridiculous and amazing at the same time. And it’s all down to you guys to drive this franchise forward,” he said.
Lautner, 19, who plays werewolf Jacob Black, added, “There are a few moments that mean so much, it’s really even hard to explain, and this is definitely one of those.
The “Twilight” films are based on a series of best-selling novels by author Stephenie Meyer and tell the story of a young girl falling in love with a vampire boy in a world where vampires and werewolves roam in disguise among the living. The first three films, produced by independent studio Summit Entertainment, have made more than $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office. — Reuters
