ROCK ON THE ROLL
What The Cold Play is to one, is mere 'cold play' to the other! One person's Rhythm and Blues could be the previous generations' blues! You see, the thing about music is that it hits us anyway. And if the genre by chance happens to be rock, trust its rock-solid ability to become the cult, cutting across the barriers of era and geography.
Nothing brings the young and the restless together as much as a cancelled rock concert! Those of the twenty thousand who could not attend the recent Metallica concert will understand and those of the roughly twenty-two thousand that did finally attend the Bangalore concert will also understand! "As far as releasing pent-up emotions is concerned, any form of music of your choice will do, but what makes rock stand apart from other genres is that it's a departure from the conventional and commercial form of music," Tushar Sharma, a rock fan and Symbiosis Law School pass-out says what hooks him to the genre and how he could not attend The Metallica concert. He adds, "It's very relevant to the age-group of twenty to twenty-five. And the music is not just about noise or aggression as many perceive it." No wonder there is hardly a generation of teens not hooked to Pink Floyd's We don't need no Education or Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock. Does the connect go beyond the head-banging music? Or does it lie only in the rebellious lyrics? Shares N-gritz, a rapper and student SD College, "The big thing about rock is that one can establish a connect with it. And with youth that is what matters the most. For instance, my recent video Precious moments on Youtube garnered as many as 65,000 views just because it found an echo with many of them." He adds, "Though I make rap music, still rock is the second best genre. It has a rebellious streak in it and makes you go wild." Like a wild child! Shares Shashank Dogra, bassist from Chandigarh-based band Driving on Tracks, "It's childish, it's
quite crazy and it's very inspiring; that is what defines the age group between fifteen and twenty-five and that is why it's a hit among them." He adds, "If asked to define in one word — it's enjoyable. Whether you are performing or whether you are listening." The uninitiated might debate over the loud noise, but for others it's sheer connectivity. Hardly any other genre has demi-god icons. To begin with there's Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, U2… "Beatles remains my all-time favourite band and if we didn't have rock, I'd next switch to blues," says Tushar. And if there's one group they'd rather have perform here... "I'd spend thousands to watch Beatles perform in Chandigarh. Apart from Metallica, it's the most popular band," nods N-gritz. "A majority of the people who don't like rock are the ones who haven't listened to it. If they did, they'd undoubtedly like it," opines Kirat Ahluwalia, freelance drummer and a B.Com student. He adds, "All of us have a tendency to imbibe the best from every genre. For example, Jazz or ghazal is quite soothing and then there are times when you need to experience raw energy. Who can resist Aeromsith's Dream On?" That's when that actually happens. Meanwhile, 2012 or 2020, every time The Linkin Park will strum a guitar the frenzy will take over and the head-bangers emerge from hibernation. Each to his own!

INCREDIBLE INDIA
Howsoever music deprived we may claim to be, but several artistes of international fame have performed live in India, at one time or the other. Bangalore has witnessed several popular rock groups give their best performances. Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams, Scorpions, Sting, Aerosmith, Elton John, Deep Purple and recently Metallica have all had their share of India tour. However, the rock fans still have a long wish list to go!

Best friends, not forever!
Sonia Mahajan is having sleepless nights, but not due to her aggressive boss, annoying neighbour or terrible mother-in-law.
It's her best friend forever's (BFF) constant betrayals that have Sonia wondering, 'what did I do deserve this?'
Her 'childhood bestie' has been doing rounds of slandering her name. "I did not believe it at the first instance, but when more and more people told me of her passing snide remarks behind my back, I had no choice but to accept," says Sonia, hurt and stumped. There are a number of studies that pinpoint benefits of having friends - better social skills, lesser stress and even longevity! Well, there are almost an equal number of studies, if not more, that talk about drawbacks of having friends. However, those in question here are 'toxic' friends. One of the recent studies lists one in three admitting to having a
toxic BFF. If one counts the happiest moments of life, it is guaranteed that they are with friends. At the same time, anger, guilt, frustration, unfulfilled expectations, sleepless nights are also part of the beautiful process called friendship. Though by and large 'friendship' is the only relationship that one gets to choose, with time they become as
permanent as other relationships. Good or bad, it becomes almost impossible to call it quits. Says Aashish Sharma, a lawyer, "My work involves handling many complicated cases, but I am not able to handle my friend's ways." His childhood friend seems to be a compulsive liar and inevitably lands Aashish in a tight spot. "After many toxic tussles, I decided to do away with friendship but then he has become such a part of my life. I wonder when I have suffered his ways for three long decades, maybe I can for some more time. And then in the twilight of our
life, we can sit together and laugh it over," says Aashish. Newly-wed Manyata is another 'toxic friend sufferer' who is not only braving challenges of her new life but also BFF's constant calls. "She has always been such an attention-seeker. She almost ruined my wedding with her barrage of calls because she wanted to be on the phone the whole day trying to make up for her absence," says Manyata. Her calls have followed Manyata into her new home to the extent that her phone ring scares Manyata no end. "I am terrified each time my phone rings. I know if I don't answer the call, next time when I take it, it is
going be worse with the accusations of not being a good friend all over me," she says. Among the range (yes, toxic friends do come in various shapes and sizes), worst are the emotional black holes. All the world's misfortunes are theirs to keep and they are sure to spoil everyone's happy day with their sob stories. Says Manpreet Kaur, a banker, "I have always considered myself to be a positive person, till I landed up sharing my cubicle with this workmate. 'Negative' is a word too small to do justice to her persona," she says. Her workmate has had a rub-on effect on Manpreet who after a 12-hour-long work shift sees the world in a gloomy light! Well, there might be some reasons for you to keep these 'emotional beasties' in life, but, find ways to keep yourself
sane! mona@tribunemail.com
CURE IT
Though we completely and entirely understand that it's not the easiest thing to break away from a friendship, we list some feasible steps.
IDENTIFY THEM
"A friend who when around you belittles you or makes you feel bad about yourself. Someone you hate to be around. Someone who everyone fears, but is still their friend," is how urbandictionary.com defines a 'toxic' friend. We list some types: Attention-seeker: Have a friend who calls at three in the morning to cancel the day's plans? Or, one whose call you can't disconnect even if you want to? Perpetual betrayer: Has a friend broken your trust once or twice? There is this special category of 'back-stabbers'. Narcissist mate: Well, in this friendship of 'I, me and myself' there is no 'you'. If you exit, chances are that he or she wouldn't even notice. Mr or Ms Misery: These are the emotional black holes who rejoice in sobbing. Unreliable ally: Do you have a friend who has had 'no show' many times and who is no return calls guaranteed? Don't expect a change either. Fault-finder: Though poet Kabir said it's good to keep a critic around, still be watchful of a friend who doubles up as a constant critic!

Hot couture
It’s that time of the year when cozy knits; bright hues and long sleeves make for a perfect gear. Every season brings along a new fashion trend and this season is all about androgyny, where men become more like women and women imitate men. Well, we are talking about a global trend which is the highlight of the season.
From mannish check shirts to suits to turtle neck sweaters, we see men designs in women collections. And mind you, this trend is quite prevalent in fall/winter collections of Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Sonia Rykiel, Balenciaga and others too. “Winter fashion is generally gender neutral. Men like to wear feminine colours and women don’t mind wearing beige, grey or any other masculine colours. And for the silhouettes, as the winter is typically not about fitted clothes, you can pull off many a gender neutral trends,” says Geet Sethi, consultant and training head, Espirit, India. “Digital prints and soft wool is another trend that is going to be quite a hit this season,” says Akhil Duggar, creative head, Madame. He adds, “Despite the fact that fashion experts often criticise layered looks, layers are the best for cold and would be in trend this year too. The elegance of the 40s would also be witnessed on the fashion scene. For the fall, we have a lot of floral patterns and when we say floral it’s not fabric but we have used flowers as embellishments. Kaftans, kimonos and shrugs too are a hit for this season.” Well, since fashion repeats itself we suggest there is no harm in searching your grandma’s trunk! Chunky knit is another prominent item on the display in the market. Since it was quite a rage last year, so little wonder it has made a comeback in designers’ collections. “The hand-knitted look is going to be a hit this season. But the wool is quite soft,” says Geet. As for the colour trend, it’s quite obvious that designers have opted for neutral or reserved colours like black, brown, navy, cream and dark violet as they are neutral and apply to both sexes. However, the fall/winter collections abound in brighter hues like crimson, neon orange, purple and sky blue too. What’s more, these eye-popping tones have come in daring combinations. Long tunic sweaters too are in this season. In varied neck patterns and styles, we have pullovers with satin embellishments, embedded with belts and pullovers that come in layered style.

DIRECTION-WISE
Rupa Batra from Delhi, who runs a vaastu consultancy agency Global Vaastu, has a curious interest in the science since childhood. “I was inquisitive about pandits, kundlis, where I have come from and how all the processes of life work.”
It’s true that if you
have faced something in life, only then you have the real knowledge about it. “My dad suffered losses despite putting in a lot of hardwork. When a pandit came for puja at home, I learnt that directions have power.” Rupa has learnt vaastu from her mentors in Egypt, Delhi, Saudi Arabia and Jalandhar. Having been in this field for 14 years, she shares, “Vaastu is the science of optimally balancing the five elements - air, water, fire, earth and space.” She gives the following tips. For the drawing room: There should be no war pictures, sad pictures and horrific frames because they invite negative vibes. The sitting arrangement should be under the beam. No intimate and vulgar paintings or frames must be hung on the wall. The family photographs can be placed on north, north-east and east wall. For the kitchen Do not keep any medicine here as it becomes a part of food you eat. Face east while cooking. For the living room While sleeping, one’s head should be towards the south and feet should never be towards the south. Box beds should never have footwear, books and utensils stored in them. A couple’s room should never have idols of gods or their pictures. While sleeping, no body part should be visible in a mirror as there are chances of that particular body part being affected by an acute disease. Business Forex and share traders should keep their laptops very clean. A piggy bank must be kept in south-east and should never be kept empty. Businessmen should have a solid wall behind them and not a glass. Seating should be towards east and north. General There should be no clutter at home. For instance, broken utensils, old cells, CDs, rusted items, broken mirrors etc. All of this must be cleared immediately to invite positive energy. Footwear should be arranged properly to avoid quarrels and clashes. The money safe must be placed on south, south-west and west.

Indian music, foreign notes
“Religion, classical music and the magic of India has fascinated people the world over. With technological advancement, more and more art lovers have relished their grandeur,” says Shantanu Bhattacharyya, Kolkata-based prominent classical vocalist.
Shantanu is a musician of national eminence and has promoted classical music among youngsters in India as well as abroad. Shantanu is an ‘A’ graded artiste of AIR and Doordarshan. Credited with several albums and rightfully decorated with awards, Shantanu has performed in prestigious music festivals in India as well as France, Germany, USA, UK, Switzerland, Estonia, Kuwait and Bangladesh. In Chandigarh along with his three disciples from Canada, on the invitation of Dr Vibha Ray, director of Ashiana, a home for the destitute children, Shantanu shares his passion for promoting classical genres, especially amid the younger generation. At his academy, Aalorepathe (path of light), in Kolkata, he is training 50 young artistes aged between 3 to 13 years. “They play traditional compositions of Dhrupad Dhamar and Khayal, which have been immortalised by the likes of Tansen, Sadarang, Bahadur Hussain et al,” he says. He believes in catching them young. “My disciples Shamrat, Shohini Medha and Anupam refused to associate themselves with a top TV channel,”he adds. His students from Canada, Jonathan Kay, Andrew Kay and Justin Gray, are all established Jazz musicians who are learning Indian classical music from Shantanu since the last five years. Says Justin Gray (25), renowned Fretless Electric Bass guitarist, “Guru Shantanu has modified the instrument and added 10 sympathetic strings (tarbs), which are more compatible with Indian music. He has named it Bass Veena.” Hailing from Toronto, Andew Kay (26), an ace Alto Saxophone player, says his instrument has been made with broken and abandoned shell pieces of World War II. Justin Kay (30), an expert Tenor Soparno Saxophone artiste, plays Indian music on

Master Chef
Since prehistoric times, man has used root vegetables as part of his staple diet. Can you imagine life without potatoes, carrots, ginger, garlic or turmeric? We have progressed to many new entrants into our list of edibles but we are still rooting for the roots and shoots as the healthiest food
items.
Lotus stem, called kamal-kakri is one such exotic vegetable that grows, not under the soil but under water! The recipe that follows is prepared with crispy fried slices of lotus stem but you can parboil the pieces and omit the frying step if you want to make a lighter dish. I recommend though, that you go ahead fry them for the ultimate experience! Crispy lotus stem with vegetables Method

Style and haute couture are the terms associated with the young brigade. But when fashion has an individualistic touch, it becomes the insignia style of the person which makes him or her stand out. Member of a rock band “Rash”, debonair Sultan Singh, a B Com student believes in casual smart look ….
Your sense of style Style for me is the ability to carry off what one wears with grace and a confident attitude. It is the casual sporty look which is actually real style in my case. The latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories… My ribbed blue denim jeans and my glares from Armani. Brand crazy or street pick-ups? I can pick up from anywhere and feel comfortable provided the fit is right and appropriate. Your style icon would be… I just idolise Johnny Depp in the international scene and Hrithik Roshan in Bollywood. Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity? Bappi Lahri and Govinda take the cake. Which look would your prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous For me stylish and cool would be better One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… Gaudy and flashy wear even to college! Your take on accessories… Accessories are very important. Again they complement the dress. What gives you a high on the confidence level? When I get a special compliment from my special friend and of course you can guess the gender! (As told to Poonam Bindra)

HEART TALK
I am a thirty-eight year old working woman. I am planning to adopt a kid, but there is lot of opposition from my parents. They don’t think it is wise to adopt a kid. How do I convince them?
Firstly, sit and ask yourself why you want the kid and are you in a position to take care of the kid; provide a good lifestyle and bear the consequences of it. If you are convinced yourself, take your parents into the loop and discuss it with them. I am not discouraging you, but this is not an easy decision to make. Take your time. I am a fifty-year-old divorced man. I am thinking of remarriage, but my friends discourage me saying it isn’t wise to get married at this age. I am looking for someone who can understand me. Do you think I would become the butt of all jokes if I get married? Who says it is not good to get married at fifty? If you feel it is okay to find a companion, others should not have a problem with it.

On cloud nine
Kareena Kapoor is one lucky chick and she has earned her starry place in this world. She was in London attending the premiere of Ra.One and the next day, she unveiled her wax statue at the iconic Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. The superstar is on cloud nine as she talks about her likeness in wax.
On being waxed I am very happy and excited as I have visited Madame Tussauds as a child and I used to look at other people’s statues but never imagined that one day my own statue will be standing there. The best part They have made it so natural; each and every part is just like me. From my cheeks to eyes, nose, everything has been done nicely. I like the way they have created my eyes as those eyes have my spark and energy. Look no further My Jab We Met’s Mauja Hi Mauja look was so famous and popular that it became a fashion statement and it was the best dress they could have chosen and I am happy that they made the statue in that avatar. Spellbound When I was in the room I looked around and realised that I am the youngest from Bollywood and my statue is exactly next to Amitabh Bachchan. What more can I say…! Best of the lot Without any doubt it has to be Mr Bachchan: the charisma, the charm everything is there in his statue. Saif’s reaction Saif too loved the statue and he said it looks as hot as me

Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon has been slammed by animal rights groups for carrying a four thousand dollar Chloe Paraty python bag. Selling python skin is illegal in California and it is likely that Witherspoon got it from Paris or New York, a publication said.
"No matter how much Reese paid for that bag, the animals paid a much higher price. Every year, millions of snakes are skinned alive," said a spokeswoman for PETA. Earlier too a lot of celebrities have been criticised widely for wearing animal skin or carrying animal skin bags. Ironically, Reese Withersspoon has been named one of the Sexiest Vegetarians by the organisation

Biryani in Bidar
The sensuous Emraan Hashmi - Vidya Balan Ishq Sufiyana track, which has just released, is already creating waves for the right reasons.
During the shooting of the track at the exquisite Bidar Fort near Hyderabad, a huge crowd, which had gathered there, was super excited to see Emraan.
It is a known fact that Bidar has a sizable Muslim community, most of whom waited patiently from the crack of dawn to see Emraan and Vidya stir up their chemistry, despite the presence of wild animals in the vicinity. They were in raptures every time Emraan did a signature move in the track’s choreography - touching his heart with his right hand followed by a kiss on his right hand, known to be a Muslim gesture. Some members of the crowd are said to have invited Emraan over to their homes for biryani. Confirms Emraan, “The crowd in Bidar was fabulous. It was great interacting with them.” He laughs, “Yes, they volunteered to make me biryani! Maybe I’ll take up their offers, the next time I’m in Hyderabad!”

Better luck next time!
We think actors are reasonably intelligent. So what propels them to do bad movies in which flaws are glaringly obvious? That mystery will take a long time to solve. In the meanwhile, here is our list of bad movies.
Hit by chance Kareena and Salman in Bodyguard: Kareena is a super-talented actress so we don’t know why she does all these bad movies which turn out to be blockbusters (sometimes). Salman could really stop doing these South-Indian remakes as we have had enough already. This movie is the height of regressive and outdated cinema! Poor attempt Kangna, Ajay, and Sanjay in Rascals: Kangna is good in her psychotic roles. She couldn’t even act in Rascals and simply flaunted her (newly acquired) curvy body! Ajay and Sanjay behaved like they were on a holiday and couldn’t be bothered to act. The movie was bad even by David Dhawan’s standards. Double the mistake Sanjay and cast in Double Dhamaal: The actors just mimicked other actors and spoke loudly throughout. Mallika and Kangna were only there for the glam factor. Nothing like love Shefali and Rahul Bose in Kuchh Love Jaisa: The movie looked like a rip-off of Knight and Day but it wasn’t. Shefali and Rahul were good in it but it was an agonisingly boring movie. Such a waste of efforts! No, thank you! Akshay, Sonam, and Irrfan in Thank You: This movie was plain horrible and chauvinistic. Everybody was annoying in the movie. Sheer torture! Anees Bazmee should go back to film school! Room for improvement Shahid and Sonam in Mausam: We wonder why nobody noticed the flaws in the script and how progressively boring and implausible it got. They were good in the movie but the movie failed them. Pity! What were they thinking? The cast of Hum Tum Aur Shabana: Why on Earth was this movie made! It was noisy from start to finish and plain lame. Tusshar should really look for an alternate career. Minissha couldn’t bring out the naivety of her character convincingly. Sagar Bellary should stop making movies!

Missed chances
Hollywood veteran Roger Moore, who played secret agent James Bond in seven films, says he did not like the latest version of 007 movie Quantum of Solace.
Moore, 84, criticised the Quantum of Solace starring Daniel Craig for its overlong shaky plot and heavy use of product placement, a publication reported. “I didn’t like the last Bond film, it was like a long, disjointed commercial,” he said.
He also criticised his Bond predecessor, Sean Connery, saying he struggles to understand the actor’s strong Scottish accent. “Sean is a good actor, it’s a pity I can’t understand what he’s saying,” he added. Despite an illustrious career, the British star admits there is a part he regrets not landing, the title role in Laurence of Arabia. “I’d have loved to have been as talented as Peter O’Toole,” he said.

Farm fresh
Ira Dubey, daughter of Lillete Dubey, who made her debut in Aisha, was recently spotted at a store launch of a beauty product. Ira gives us some beauty tips on how to keep one self hydrated and fresh.
Happy go lucky According to me, beauty is deep inside. Be happy, do what you want. Eat right, keep smiling and exercise. By exercise, I don’t mean go to the gym daily. In my entire life, I have never been to gym but I do Yoga thrice a week. Join a dance class, do some painting. Most importantly, you have to be happy from inside. Screening it right Use a sunscreen that’s light weight. And also which has SPF more than 30. No matter what season it is, don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Under my umbrella That’s very important. Especially when you stay in Mumbai because you never know when it will rain and when it’ll be harsh sun. So it’s better to carry an umbrella with you all through the year. Back to basics Keep your skin hydrated by washing it at least thrice a day. Keep your body hydrated by drinking lots of water. Drink water, juice and take fruits as much as you can.

Gaurav's travelogue ….
Gaurav Chopra, who is currently seen in Colors' Uttaran, went for a holiday to Tuscany in Italy. We caught with the actor to speak about his adventure and voyage. The actor also shared some travel tips. Here's what he said…
Tuscany's wonderful I recently went to Tuscany. It is a small region in Italy in Europe and one of the most beautiful places. A lot of tourists go there. I had an amazing time there. What I loved the most about the place is that it has old structures as well as the new buildings. They haven't demolished anything but rather preserved their cultural heritage. It's really astonishing to see a beautiful blend of different eras. In the shopping bag I am more of a jacket person. So I always keep shopping for jackets. But if you are in Italy, the best thing you can get are leather products. So I bought shoes, jackets and some souvenirs for memory. Dream destination I have never been to Australia and New Zealand. I love both places because of their natural habitat and green environment. So hopefully, I shall take a holiday in future. Travel light I always travel light. I don't like to carry a lot of stuff like electronics. Carrying them is one responsibility as you are always scared of losing them. So, it kills all the excitement. Travel tip Before going to any place abroad, always make sure to get your currency exchanged. Because what happens is that you neglect these things and then later you don't get proper rates. Thus you end up losing a lot of money. Also, travel light and carry extra bags with you as you are always going to end shopping even if you don't plan to.

Reunion of sorts
John Abraham and Bipasha Basu are both part of Race 2. They have been avoiding each other in public since almost 10 months now but have agreed to share screen space for two scenes in Race 2. Pretty professional, we got to say!
Strictly professional: John Abraham and Bipasha Basu Happy and gay
Karan Johar is just obsessed with gay characters. His character for Rishi Kapoor in Student of the Year is gay and has a soft spot for Ronit Roy’s character. Rishi is excited to play the role. When will Bollywood get over its gay obsession? It’s just
juvenile!
Soft target: Rishi Kapoor Delayed or denied
The shooting of Barfee has been delayed again because Priyanka Chopra has merrily flown off to the United States to make her music album after cancelling her dates. Anurag Basu is tired of calling her back and he is keeping mum on the issue.
So not true!
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian on Tuesday dismissed reports that she profited from her televised wedding to Kris Humphries, only one day after filing for divorce from the basketball player. "There are also reports that I made millions of dollars off of the wedding. These reports are simply not true and it makes me so sad to have to even clarify this. I'm so grateful to everyone who took the time to come to my wedding, and I'll be donating the money for all the gifts to the Dream Foundation," Kardashian wrote on her website. The 31-year-old TV star filed for divorce from Humphries, 26, on Monday after 72 days of marriage. Their wedding in August was reported to have cost $10 million, and it aired in October on the E! network in a special called Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event.
