Govt gives in to safai sewaks
Ludhiana, October 31
In a major victory for private garbage collectors, the state government has decided to ask A2Z Waste Management Ludhiana Ltd to discontinue its operations relating to door-to-door collection of garbage in the city. Company officials will not lift garbage from collection points located in various parts of the city. Now, private garbage collectors will continue their operations in the city.

Car dealers still awaiting software for making RCs 
Ludhiana, October 31
The state government may have launched a scheme on October 12, wherein car dealers would prepare registration certificates (RCs) of vehicles, but more than half a dozen dealers in the city are still waiting for the software to be installed by the department on their premises required to make the registration certificates.

I’m breaking the law, confesses Manpreet

“I am breaking the law. I have no choice as I am being forced to do that,” said Peoples Party of Punjab (PPP) supremo Manpreet Singh Badal, who recently bought a sports utility vehicle (SUV) from a car dealer in Mohali 45 days ago but has not got a Registraton Cerificate (RC) yet.

Ban fails to deter farmers from burning stubble

A farmer burns paddy stubble in his fields outside Galib Ran Singh village near Jagraon With the harvesting of paddy crop almost done and farmers preparing their fields for early cultivation of the next crop, the practice of burning paddy stubble by farmers in various villages surrounding Jagraon is going unabated despite a ban imposed by the government.

Cemented manhole cover gives way

A cemented sewerage manhole cover laid down only about three months ago by the Jagraon municipal council while fixing interlocking tiles on the DAV College road caved in near Shastri Nagar locality this morning.

Removing encroachments not MC’s cup of tea

The Ludhiana municipal corporation seems totally helpless when it comes to checking encroachments and haphazard parking in Bhadaur House area of the city. Due to haphazard parking by people visiting the market, the area witnesses long traffic snarls throughout the day, leaving other shopkeepers miffed.

Cinema hall flouts norms with impunity
Jagraon, October 31
Lal Palace Theatre, the sole cinema hall situated in Jagraon, is being run in violation of norms set by the state government. A large number of irregularities were detected during a visit to the cinema hall on Saturday after it was ransacked by more than 400 spectators following a 2-minute interruption in the movie “Force”. During the visit to the cinema hall, it was found that various safety measures, which are mandatory to be in place for operating any cinema hall, were missing.

Spurt in steel prices hits engg industry hard

Persistent hike in prices of steel in the past one month-given effect at weekly intervals by the main steel producers like SAIL, ESSAR, Ispat, TATA and Jindal-had hit the micro, small and medium sectors of the engineering industry hard, and the manufacturers of the steel-based products have virtually gone into a tailspin over meeting their prior commitments.

PRTC fails to keep its promise

Ten months after PEPSU Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) chairman Ranjit Singh Balian took stock of situation at the local bus stand, officials have failed to provide even basic amenities to people. With potholes dotting entry and exit points and parking lots, the situation has turned from bad to worse.

‘Changing weather may cause viral, bacterial infections’

Though the weather is normal and there is no chance of rain in the region, the dry spell weather conditions with dust particles scattered in the air have triggered off violent allergic reactions, viral and bacterial infections. City-based physicians believe that there has been up to 30 per cent increase in cases of viral infections and allergies being reported in OPDs of various hospitals and private clinics.

Jashn-e-Sahir 39th Annual All-India Mushaira was organised at Nehru Sidhant Kendra. Urdu poets from different parts of India took part in the event. Dr Kewal Dheer, Chairman, Adeeb International (Sahir Cultural Academy), was felicitated for bring awarded a citation in the House of Commons in Canada for his works in Urdu literature and poetry.

Following lath charge and arrest of a few teachers in Bathinda yesterday, the ETT Teachers’ Union staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here today. They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Two girls abducted

The local police is yet to trace two girls who were allegedly abducted by three unidentified persons in broad daylight on Saturday. The incident took place near GTB market. These girls were residents of Majra village near Khanna.
