Man found dead, murder suspected
Ambala, October 22 According to information, Jawahar Lal (33), a resident of Gonda (UP), was working in Jaipur Golden, a transport company at Ambala City. The owner of the transport company had given him a room where he was living alone. When one of his known came in his room this morning, he found that Jawahar was lying in the pool of blood. The police said it could be a murder case as deep injuries were found on his neck. DSP Raj Kumar Walia and SHO Baldev Nagar police station Rajneesh Yadav also reached the site. The police could not achieve any clue in this regard. A case on the complaint was registered against the unknown person on the statement of the brother of the deceased.

Two arrested with 2-kg opium
Lalru, October 22 As per the information, the special police staff
of Mohali led by Tejinder Singh Sandhu and police party led by chowki in
charge Santokh Singh had set up a naka near Lehli where accused were
arrested. The police also recovered 2-kg opium from their
possession. The accused were presented in the Dera Bassi court from
where they were sent on two-day police remand. The police told the
accused were going to Banur to supply opium.

544 examined at eye camp
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 22 Prof Hardarshan Singh Mejie (patron) inaugurated the camp and Hassan Mejie, advisor, presided over the camp. A team of doctors led by Dr GS Randhwa, MD, examined 544 persons belonging to BPL families of 105 surrounding villages. The trust provided medicine, transport, cataract removal surgery and IOL replacements free of cost. Hassan Mejie said 84 persons had been diagnosed for cataract operation and they have been registered for operation and IOL replacement free of
cost by MBCT.

Despite resistance, gold chain snatched
Mohali, October 22 Balbir Kaur, mother of three and wife of a senior bank officer living in Phase II, had gone to the house of a neighbour in connection with some work. She was waiting outside the house after ringing the doorbell. A youth came from behind and pulled the gold chain she was wearing. He then fled from the scene riding pillion on a motorcycle as his accomplice was waiting for him close by. Balbir Kaur said that when the youth snatched her chain she turned and caught hold of his shirt. She kept holding the shirt waiting for help but the suspect managed to free himself. She ran after him but he pushed her hard and she fell down and was injured. After a complaint was made to the police in this regard, two policemen came and recorded the statements of Balbir Kaur. Theft case solved
Within few hours of the incident, the Mohali police claimed to have solved a theft case that took place at HDFC Bank, Mullanpur, on Friday night. The police has arrested two persons, including a security guard of the bank, and recovered stolen computers costing Rs 75,000 from their possession. The accused have been identified as Palwinder Singh, a security guard, and Jaspreet Singh, a resident of Manaksharif, also working as a computer mechanic. The police also impounded the motorcycle that was used in the crime from their possession. The police got the information regarding the theft from Palwinder Singh and smelt a rat when the security guard narrated the fake incident of robbery to Davinder Singh, SHO, Mullanpur. The police detained the guard and began probing the matter. |

1 booked in hit-and-run case
Chandigarh, October 22 6 booked for dowry death
The police has booked six members of a family in a case of dowry death after a woman committed suicide in Mani Majra yesterday. Acting on the complaint of victim’s family, the police has booked Choti Devi, Babloo and Aswani (brother-in-law), Neetu, Sanjana and Rajni (sister-in-law) in a case of dowry death under Section 304 B of the IPC. Choti Devi has been arrested in this case.

Sudhir, a resident of Phase II, Ramdarbar, alleged that Ajit and his accomplice robbed him of his mobile phone and cash Rs 500 near the railway crossing, Ramdarbar. A case under Sections 394 and 34 of the IPC has been registered and accused Ajit Kumar has been arrested. |

Schoolgirl found drunk in park
Chandigarh, October 22 The police was called and they are investigating the case and suspect she could have been drugged. Janak Rana, SHO, Sector 19 police station, said the girl was unfit to record her statements and her medical test report was awaited. “The girl was found drunk and it is a mystery as to how the girl reached there. The picture will be clear once the girl is fit to record statements,” he said. |

Chandigarh, October 22 Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, won the PU Inter-College Chess (women) Championship. Khalsa College Women, Ludhiana, DM College, Moga, and AS College, Khanna, secured the second, third and fourth positions, respectively. GGD SD College, Sector 32, won the PU Inter-College Cricket (men) A-Division Championship. DAV College, SGGS College, and SCD Government College, Ludhiana, secured the second, third and fourth positions, respectively. DAV College, Sector 10, beat GGD SD College, Sector 32, by 14-8 in the PU Inter-College Korfball Tournament being played at the PU grounds. In the second match, SGGS College, Sector 26, defeated PG Government College, Sector 11, by 12-7 and in the third match, PU Campus drubbed DAV College by 10-5. |
Sandeep, Kamal wreck Delhi
Chandigarh, October 22 After winning the toss, Punjab skipper Manan Vohra invited the Delhi team to bat. Delhi started on a sedate note scoring 12 runs without loss in the first four overs. It was at this stage that Sandeep and Passi unleashed their fury at the Delhi batsmen who had no answer to this sudden unleashing of swinging red cherry missiles and before the Delhi team could gather their wits, Delhi was bundled out in 15.2 overs for a miserable total of 41 runs. In reply, Punjab opened with skipper Vohra and Ankit Pursharthy who put on 41 for the first wicket before Ankit going for the winning stroke got out. Thereafter, skipper Vohra hit the winning boundary to take the total to 45 for one in 11.4 overs. He remained unbeaten on 22. Punjab got five points from this win, including a bonus, while Delhi got (-1). Brief scores: Delhi: 41 all out in 15.2 overs (Sandeep Sharma 7 for 19, Kamal Passi 3 for 16).
