: Over 200 students from 23 colleges affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, have arrived at Bhutta College of Education at Bhutta village to present various items on the first day of zonal youth and heritage festival starting from tomorrow.

Sale of crackers banned: District Magistrate-cum-DC Rajinder Singh Thakur has banned the sale and storage of fire crackers in Hamirpur, except by persons holding a valid licence for this purpose. He said the sale of fire crackers from Mini Secretariat to the Regional Hospital, the bazaars of Bhota, Badsar, Naduan, Sujanpur, Jahu, Bhoranj, Bhareri and Mehere etc had been banned.

Computers worth Rs 3 lakh stolen: Computers worth Rs 3 lakh were stolen from a computer shop in Sector 3 of New Shimla, on Tuesday night. Owner Pawan Kumar, in his complaint to the police, has said 12 computers, along with accessories, were stolen from his shop. In another theft case, a sum of Rs 13,000 and some gold ornaments were stolen from Surinder Singh’s house in New Shimla.

Bonus sought for ex-servicemen
: The Uttarakhand Ex-servicemen Organisation has expressed concern over the failure of the Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) polyclinic facility to serve its purpose. Lt-Col Ganga Singh Rawat (retd) disclosed that the ex-servicemen would be meeting the Uttarakhand Sub-Area Commander to discuss the issue of the ECHS polyclinic facility. The meeting also demanded Diwali bonus for ex-servicemen getting deployed at various establishments in the state through Uttarakhand Ex-Servicemen Corporation Limited.

Man arrested: A man was arrested for allegedly enticing a minor girl to flee with him in the Raiwala area a few days ago. According to the police, Praveen has been arrested after the girl’s family lodged a case against him. The police has registered a case and he will be produced before a local court.

RIMC wins quiz: A Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) team, comprising Cadets Chandrashekhar Panigrahi, Gaurav Mhetre and Shashank Dahiya, won the International Cartographic Association (INCA) Map Quiz 2011 which concluded recently. In the preliminary round of the quiz, 1475 teams from across the country took part. In the final round, St Kabir School, Chandigarh, stood third, Oak Grove School, Mussoorie, stood second and RIMC stood first. The team attended the prize distribution ceremony in Chandigarh.

Bid to escape from police custody:
A man accused of having stolen a pipe tried to escape from the police custody when he was brought to be produced in a local court in Ramnagar. Showing a quick response to his attempted escape, the police managed to nab him. The accused, Mohammad Wasim, is a resident of the Khatadi area of the town and had been caught stealing a huge pipe from the godown of an iron merchant.

Power employee killed in accident: An employee of the Power Department posted at Lal Kuan was crushed to death after being run over by a tractor on Tuesday evening near Halduchaur. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Bhuvan Chandra Pande. His motorcycle collided head on with a tractor and slided away. He was crushed under the tractor and succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The tractor driver fled the spot after the accident. This is the fourth death in the area over the past five days.

Identity proof for hiring taxis: The Haldwani police has advised the taxi operators in the town to take an identity proof of customers hiring their vehicles for going to other towns. The suggestion was made at a meeting held on Tuesday in the wake of a taxi driver going missing from Najibabad. Earlier, a taxi driver had been found murdered in the forests of the Tanda area. The police has asked the taxi drivers to provide their services only after issuing proper slips to customers and taking the latter’s identity proofs. In the hope of earning a quick buck, the taxi drivers are falling prey to miscreants.

Man found murdered: A middle-aged man was killed after someone threw acid on him at his house in Derau village near Kitcha in Udham Singh Nagar. It is learnt that 55-year-old Ramchandra was found murdered in his house on Tuesday morning. His body had been burnt with acid. His son, Pappu, has lodged a complaint with the police against four persons, charging them for having threatened and murdered his father. A case has been registered in the matter.

Licences for selling crackers: The Bageshwar administration has initiated a drive to streamline things with regards to the approaching Diwali festival. The shopkeepers have been warned not to sell products in polythene bags and to maintain cleanliness in the markets. The administration has made it clear that only those who have been issued licences will be eligible to sell crackers and no stall can be sublet. The administration has also announced that it will carry out a drive to check food adulteration during the next few days and those found indulging in the malpractice would be punished.
