A local court has acquitted all four accused of murdering 42-year-old kitchen supervisor Vijay Kumar, who used to work at Western Court Hotel, Sector 43, after all six witnesses, including the victim’s wife, turned hostile. The case dates back to March this year.

Though the order was passed on Tuesday, its contents were made available today. The court acquitted Harvinder Singh, a former employee of the hotel and a resident of Kajheri village, and three others Jaswinder, Harmit and Tegvir Singh.

On March 10, the victim, Vijay Kumar, a resident of Butlera village, was assaulted with blunt weapons at Kajheri village by assailants and was dumped in front of his house in Buterla village in Sector 41.

Vijay had refused to take any medical help and gone to sleep even as his condition deteriorated the next morning. He was taken to the the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Earlier, the victim’s wife, Anita, had told the police that her husband had told her before going to sleep that he had been beaten up with hockey sticks and iron bars by a former hotel colleague, Harvinder, a resident of Kajheri, along with some other people. He had refused to take medical help and gone to sleep, she had told the police.

However during the trial, she changed her statement and told the court that she was asleep when her husband had reached home that night and the next morning, when her husband’s condition started deteriorating, she along with some relatives took him to the hospital.

Vijay’s brother-in-law Khem Singh and four employees of the hotel also turned hostile during the course of the trial.

The police had informed the court that Vijay had left the hotel with the accused in a car. His scooter was found parked outside the hotel.

It had cited old enmity between Vijay and the main accused, Harvinder, as the cause of the crime.

DAV College row
Jolt to Josan as HC stays PU order
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 19
In what is being seen as a setback to the under-suspension Principal of Chandigarh DAV College, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today stayed the operation of a Panjab University communication recommending the revocation of his suspension.

Staying the operation of the orders, the High Court also issued notice of motion to the university and Dr BC Josan.

The directions by the Bench headed by Justice SK Mittal came during the hearing of a petition filed by the governing body of the DAV management committee.

The governing body submitted that as per the rules, Panjab University could not override the suspension order passed by the body.

Josan was appointed as Principal in April, 2008. He was transferred to Malout town in September, 2010 after differences with the committee. Josan did not comply with the orders and his services were placed under suspension on September 23 last year by the DAV college managing committee.

Among other things, he was blamed for running courses without affiliation. The committee then appointed Shashi Gupta as the officiating principal.

After Josan approached the High Court against his suspension orders, the Bench directed PU Registrar to take a fresh decision on the issue of his suspension.

Dubbing the DAV College, Sector 10, controversy unfortunate, the High Court had, in effect, refused to grant relief to the under-suspension Principal, but had directed the completion of the departmental proceedings against him within two months in July.

Teams sweat it out in nets
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 19
Hoping to make a comeback in the ongoing India and England series, the English team sweated its out during their practice session at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, today.

The ‘Men in Blue’ will take on England in the third ODI to be held at Mohali tomorrow.

Indian team members, in the absence of their star left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir and pacer Parveen Kumar, worked out in the morning, while their English counterparts underwent training in the afternoon.

Members of both teams opted to undergo a light practice session, including fielding, in the nets.

While Indian captain MS Dhoni tried his hands at his famous “helicopter” shot, Virat Kohli and Ravinder Jadeja concentrated on fielding.

Opener Ajinkya Rahane, new entry to the squad, was seen facing the bowl-thrower to practice bouncers.

England captain Alastair Cook, after a light batting session, preferred to relax at the swimming pool on the premises, while his teammates Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell spent time on nurturing their batting skills. The England team is trailing 2-0 in the five-match series.

Local flavour missing

Local fans are a little disappointed to seen not a single local cricket star making it to the final list of the Indian squad. “Had Yuvraj or Harbhajan been part of the contingent here, it would have lent a different flavour to the match. In their absence, we will surely want to see Rahul Sharma bring laurels to the country,” said Amit Mittal, a fan.

However, left-handed batsman Suresh Raina is confident of a comeback by Yuvraj Singh.

“Yuvi is our senior and I hope he will make a comeback. There is no question of door being closed for him. He will definitely perform well and will recover from his injury soon. The team is also waiting for him,” said Raina.

Play of faith

Faith surely has a role to play in Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s performance on the field, for he was seen carrying around a Sathya Sai Baba’s photograph during his batting session. The photograph was seen in Dhoni’s hand when he was giving autographs to youngsters. Top batsman Sachin Tendulkar is also believed to be a disciple of the Baba.

Sachin being missed

Sudhir Kumar of Muzaffarpur, a die-hard fan of master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar, arrived here to support the Indian team today. Sudhir, who is often seen with an Indian Tri-colour painted on his body, had a ‘Missing you Sachin’ message on his chest.

“I am here to support the Indian team although Sachin Bhai is not here. Nevertheless, I hope the team will exact its revenge for the recent defeat in England. After this match, I will move to Mumbai to support the team in their next match,” he added.

The only sniffer dog in the district
Rajmeet Singh
Tribune News Service

Mohali, October 19
These days Dhoni is sniffing around explosives to ensure safety of celebrities and cricket fans during the one-day international match between India and England scheduled for October 20 at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium here.

A trained canine in sniffing out explosives, Dhoni is lone four-and-a-half-year-old Labrador with the district police entrusted with the pivotal job of sniffing explosives during matches at PCA and during the visit of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to the district. Dhoni is shouldering the responsibility alone after the security wing of the Punjab CM requisitioned his teammate, Jojo, another Labrador.

Handlers of Dhoni, Jasbir and Kulbir, are all praise for the canine for performing the daunting task tirelessly. Many a times, Dhoni has single-handedly performed duty for long hours.

Though the dog squad of the Mohali police has a tracker canine, Preeti and a sniffer of drugs, John, but it is Dhoni who is always in demand during VVIP duties. Kulbir, handler, said at times it becomes tough for the canine to perform long hours of duty. In such situations, the duty is interspersed by brief intervals of rest and refreshments.

To keep Dhoni fit, the trainers feed it on fixed vegetarian diet and standard dog feed as advised by the veterinary doctor. The dog squad needs another canine to sniff out the explosives.
