"Chandigarh girls are beautiful, talented as well as confident; definitely better than the boys," says Satish Kaushik, actor, director and judge for fashion show Modelle DE Lannee, which took place on Sunday in Chandigarh. That models can't do well as actors is now a concept of the past.

"Nowadays modelling paves the way for a career in the entertainment industry," says Satish while citing the example of John Abraham who is now a big star. "Chandigarh is the cultural as well as the fashion hub of the region. I am glad to see fresh ideas like Modelle DE Lannee emerge here," he says.

Happy with his recent releases Rascals and Hum, Tum Aur Shabana, Satish says, "I have got a very positive feedback for Hum, Tum Aur Shabana; though the movie didn't do well. There are many factors that contribute in a movie's success, but I am glad that it got appreciated."

About the commercial flick Rascals, "Davidji and I share such an equation that I can't say no to him. That's the case with Rascals, I enjoyed the movie but I am yet to know the box-office response," says Satish, who is already in the middle of his next movie Gali Gali Main Shor Hai. "It's a satire on corruption, which stars Akshay Khanna and Mugdha Godse."

This actor-director looks for inspiration in his audience and fans. "Wherever I go, I get so much love that I want to keep up with the expectations that they have from me. It's the belief of the audiences that motivates me to do the very best in every film," he says.

On record

Another judge at Modelle DE Lannee, designer Sanjana Jon found the show uniquely creative. "The models had a chance to put together their ensembles and not just walk on the ramp," says Sanjana. She is busy planning loads of celebrity events, including Celebrity Cricket Cup that is due in November at Delhi. "Cricket is now very much a part of the entertainment industry. Though I don't follow one-day cricket or test matches, even I can't resist a celebrity match for it will be so much fun," she says.

Next, she is eyeing breaking the Guinness World Record with a huge Pride of India show.
Designer talk

Sanjana Jon doles out her designer tips for the wedding season — all shades of pink are the colour for the bride, with loads of gold and crystals. Silhouette is classier with more fitted format. Grooms are trying hard to take the limelight away from the bride, which is really not possible. It's more of traditional wear with fusion that works for men!

success mantra
ICING on the cake
Mona

An indulgent mother, Monica Sood would often want the perfect cake for her kids' birthdays. Her baking got appreciated and some motivation from friends as well as family made her start Monika's Puddings and Pies, which is a huge success today.

Some 17 years on, her passion for baking is still the same. She continues with her 'cake appointments' and herself looks into the baking as well as packaging. It's been a sweet and creative journey for Monica.

This festive and wedding season her hands are full, but she makes the most of it by starting early and winding up with a party at the end of the day. "It is love and faith that people of Chandigarh have reposed in me that has paved the way for my success," she says. She shares her success mantras with us.

Passion for work: "If one puts one's heart and soul in one's field, success is not far." Monica enjoys every bit of the long hours she puts into her work.

Go slow, but steady: "It's important to take sure steps one at a time, for no one lands at the top of the ladder straight away." Monica started with cakes and has expanded into breads, sandwiches, cookies and ice-creams.

Be honest in your approach: "One shouldn't consider others as fools. If you want your work to thrive, it's important to be honest with your clients." Monica ensures that it's only the best ingredients that go into her cakes. "Each day we make small supplies of our ice-creams with fresh fruits."

Take criticism in your stride: "I owe a lot to the feedback that I have received. In fact, customers' suggestions have come in handy and helped me maintain exclusivity."

Explore the un-chartered territories: "One needs to find the right opportunities and deliver on time." Monica started baking cakes when there were hardly any options in Chandigarh. She introduced wholegrain breads much before Maggi rolled in its atta noodles. The latest to get her good feedback are her Tofu sandwiches. "I always ensure that I offer healthy options."

Punjab calling
Actor-model Deepti Bhatnagar, in Ludhiana, shares how she loves everything Punjabi
Gurvinder Singh

Deepti Bhatnagar
MODEL MANNER: Deepti Bhatnagar

"The freshness of the paddy fields and rivers of Punjab delight me," says Deepti Bhatnagar, who was in Ludhiana to inaugurate a beauty salon in Rajguru Nagar. Perhaps that's why she was here for the fourth time and has been to various other cities of the state as well.

Married to a Punjabi, Randeep, Deepti already has a formal connection with the state. "I am taking back gur and makki ka atta from here," she says. We are curious about her success mantra? "I think it's been my confidence that has been the reason behind my success. I have this firm resolve to achieve whatever goals I set for myself," she adds.

And she backs up her statement, "I wanted a bungalow like the one in front of my house when I used to live in a small PG room in my early days. In five years, I bought that very bungalow." Donning one role after another as a model, actor, producer, entrepreneur while being a mother, wife and family person, we ask how she handles so many things together. "I don't feel it's difficult to handle many roles," she says.

Deepti loves cooking and travelling. "Whenever I travel, I don't particularly like shopping. I like to explore different cuisines, cook them and share it with everyone around." Having travelled the world, Deepti is deeply in love with her home country. "Despite corruption, pollution and other problems, I feel that our country has so much to it. It's just that we as people don't appreciate and do not value the innate beauty of everything that is there in India," she signs off.

It's a woman's world
Vasudha Gupta

Mere safine ki chanan munar meri ammi ki nazar is a sentence that wraps up all the love and affection Bittu 'Safina' Sandhu has for her mother, who passed away 26 years ago. Unlike many of us, who just mourn a loss, she has managed to maintain a strong connect with her mother. Launching her second book, Sadhran, she talks about human relations, women who have touched her life and much more.

Written in Punjabi, the book reminds Bittu about the learning, writing and reading in the language she mastered under the watchful eye of her mother. Dressed in a pink suit, promoting the cause of breast cancer, she says, "My poems are not only about what I feel, but also the problems of women that I have met."

Words, she says, come automatically to her. One aspect of the book, apart from the beautifully done cover and illustrations by Imroz, is her middle name on the book. "Safina because in my dreams I hear someone call me by that name. It has value because my first book was called Safina," she says. Keeping Rozas and Navratras regularly, she does believe in reincarnation and the theory of karma along with a strong undercurrent of Muslim influences. "My picture on the book was clicked on Id," she says. Poetry comes to her at odd hours. "Sometimes, at 2 in the morning," she says.

Published by Rajkamal Prakashan, the book is an experiment for them too. "It is their first Punjabi publication," she says. Our conversation is interrupted by a phone call and the noise her silver bangles make. There is no doubt that her poetry has melancholic tones. "Poetry for me is the seed that has germinated in my heart, I haven't been able to shape it up or alter my thoughts," she says. "It is what is in my heart, in black and white," she signs off.

Par Excellence
The routine—set up
Jesse Grewal

The first step of the routine is to take the grip. One of the methods mentioned last week is to take the club initially in one's left hand for right handed players. Some professionals prefer to pick up the club with the right hand (picture 1). This helps set the right hand correctly which controls the club head during an impact. It is impossible to get into a strong right hand position with this method. If you tend to have an error with your left hand grip, follow the method of initially taking the club by your side with your left hand (last week's article). If you have problems with your right hand grip pick up the club initially with the right hand and then slip the left hand in (picture 2).

Once the grip is taken one needs to understand the steps for a correct set-up. The set-up consists of five parts - aim, alignment, ball position, width of stance and posture. For a good athletic posture one has to create the correct angles of the body. Basically one bends from the hips and the knees so there are only two angles formed. Take a club and hold it behind your back (picture 3). If you look in a mirror, notice how far the back of your head is from the shaft in your relaxed upright position. Bend from your hips maintaining the distance between the shaft and the back of your head (picture 4). Flex the knees a little and feel that you are pressing the ground with the soles of your feet (picture 5). If you bend the knees to much you will lose this feeling of pressing down. This is referred to as being grounded. The next step is to drop the arms maintaining the angle in the wrists (picture 6). Then bend forward till the club reaches the ground. We need to bend only that much from the hips to get the sole of the club squarely on the ground (picture 7).

Singing star

Abhay Deol
note it: Abhay Deol

Actor Abhay Deol who made his singing debut in Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara with Senorita will get to sing again in his upcoming film Rock the Shaadi, in which he plays the character of a rock band member.

Rock the Shaadi will see Abhay being paired opposite Genelia D'Souza for the first time. The movie which will go on the floors soon will be produced by Ekta Kapoor and directed by Navdeep Singh and is expected to be released next year. The title Rock the Shaadi was suggested by none other than Abhay himself.

"Once during a cast and crew meeting, Ekta announced that whoever came up with an interesting title for the movie would be rewarded. And so the competition among the cast and crew began, of course in a casual and funny way. "That's when Abhay suggested the name Rock the Shaadi, given that the film is a crazy comedy. The moment everyone heard it, they were convinced that the title Rock the Shaadi actually rocked and decided to lock it immediately," a source said. Ekta has roped in Ram Sampath to compose the music for the film. Ram, whose last film was Delhi Belly, said that the film fascinated him too. The movie revolves around a Punjabi wedding. — PTI

Crossover concerns

Anupam Kher
Talent personified: Anupam Kher

The magnetic effect of India's culture and cinema will continue to draw the Western world, says veteran actor Anupam Kher, who has reached out to the domestic and international market through several crossover projects in the last three decades.

"India is now considered an economic cultural hub. We have a lot to offer to the West in terms of cinema and also on a personal level. The richness and colour of our culture have a magnetic effect on them. So it is very important to keep the Indian flavour alive, especially through crossover projects," Anupam, 56, said.

The actor, who recently featured in the Indo-Canadian film Speedy Singhs, added: "Whether in terms of tolerance, in terms of faith or whether in terms of how to deal with situations, India has a lot to offer to the West, in every sphere." Some of Anupam's past crossover films include Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, The Mistress of Spices and The Other End of the Line.

Of Bollywood's collaborations with Hollywood, he says he is glad that the international market has begun to realise India's cultural potential. "Foreigners, Hollywood or even European people now understand the reach of the Indian market. They know that business-wise they have a big market here and they can release a film here also. That is why now films are released worldwide on the same date.

"I also feel that we can look forward to more collaborations now than what we could have five years back. But it's just the beginning. It will take time...after all, change does not happen overnight. Change takes time, but we are on the right track to reach those heights," he said.

The Padma Shri awardee arrived in Bollywood with his powerful performance in Saaransh in 1984. From playing a villain to a comical guy and character roles, he has a variety of performances under his belt. If he scared people as a ruthless villain in Karma (1986) and Hum, he made them emotional with Daddy (1989) and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara. He even entertained fans by playing lighthearted characters in Lamhe (1991), Shola Aur Shabnam (1992) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

The versatile actor feels the filmmaking business has changed over time. "The business has changed a lot. Earlier, the audience was much more forgiving - they gave time to actors to establish themselves - but now it's a completely different ball game. "Now, it is time for only those people who know their job well. Only they can stay and survive in cinema. That's why intelligent filmmakers like Dibakar Banarjee, Anurag Kashyap and Neeraj Pandey are now finally being accepted. So, play time is over now, the filmmaking business is for people who know their job," said Anupam, who also runs an acting academy. — IANS

Rakhi’s complaint
Rakhi Sawant
sidelined: Rakhi Sawant

The Bollywood heroines these days are scorching the screen with item numbers, but the original item girl, Rakhi Sawant, feels it is an encroachment on her turf. After Malaika Arora Khan created a rage with Munni Badnaam Hui in Dabangg, others followed suit: Katrina Kaif (Sheila Ki Jawani), Deepika Padukone (Dum Maro Dum) and Kareena Kapoor (in upcoming Ra.One, in Chammak Challo song).

"As actresses are doing item songs, I am getting fewer offers. I am feeling bad... few item songs are coming my way. I don't like this," Rakhi said.

"Today an actress plays the main lead, does a negative role, and even an item song to boot. I feel there should be space for everyone in the industry. I started my career with item songs so I can't become a heroine. But today heroines are becoming item girls. "Rakhi shot to fame with the song Mohabbat Hai Mirchi in the film Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne (2003). It was followed by Dekhta hai Tu Kya in Krazzy 4.

Rakhi does not see herself as heroine material. "People have not seen me as a heroine and if I become one, it would shock people. No one wanted to take that chance. Also, I don't want to become an actress. I feel I have that spice of an item girl. I don't know if I have the quality for becoming an actress...the girl-next-door types. Kareena and Katrina are heroine material, item songs are forced on them." — PTI

My mother thinks I am too mature: Rihanna

Rihanna
Grown up: Rihanna

R&B star Rihanna says her mother thinks she is too mature for her age. The 23-year-old We Found Love hit maker says her tough upbringing — as the eldest daughter in her family who had to cope with her father's crack addiction, made her wise to the world, reported a website.

"I saw too much. I was way too mature for my age. I guess that's why I became rebellious," she said. Rihanna was also famously a tomboy and didn't learn how to act in a feminine way until she met one of her best friends, Melissa Forde. "I was one of the boys. I never saw the need for having girlfriends until I met Melissa. Melissa taught me how to be a girl," she added. When she was embarking on her career, Rihanna was inspired by her musical idols and she continues to find inspiration from them now. "Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston - they were my heroines," she said. — PTI

Finger on your lips

Soul star Adele says the throat issues which prompted her to cancel her US tour were caused by her talkative nature, and not due to her smoking habit.

The 23-year-old singer has cancelled concerts in her native Britain and America due to recurring issues with her voice. She most recently scrapped her 10-day US tour earlier this month, over fears that her vocal cords could be damaged for good if she did not take time to recuperate. She says her off-stage talking which has been straining her voice

"I was talking too much. I damage my voice offstage, not onstage. If I wasn't a singer I still would be smoking 25 a day," she said. — PTI

Slow and steady

Transformers star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is taking her own time to wait for the right script and so will not be seen on the big screen anytime soon. Although the model-turned-actress is getting offers, she prefers going slow when it comes to her Hollywood career. "She's had offers on the table for roles in Hollywood blockbusters—two serious ones," a publication quoted her source as saying. "But she doesn't want to do that. She's taking her time for the right script to come along and then she'll take another role on," the source added. The star wants to prove her acting credentials with a part in a small British-based flick - rather than cash in on her worldwide fame. — ANI

Small step

Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal is all set to make his small screen debut with a show on Star World. Rampal will be seen in a completely different avatar in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Ra One, is in talks with the channel.

"I will be doing a show on Star World. I will send more details as and when we confirm what it will be called, will send the promo link shortly." Arjun is currently busy hosting India's first formula one after parties in his resto-bar Lap, where pop sensation Lady Gaga will be performing on the concluding day. The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is October 11...

Your birth on the 11th indicates you love beauty and elegance and hate arguments. You express rational and impartial judgments on any subject. You are nice, gentle, balanced and can adapt to circumstances. You work well with people because you know how to use persuasion rather than force. Although you have a good mind and you are analytical, you may not be comfortable in the business world. You'll feel a little discontented as you won't get what you want. You must be patient and wait for better times. You won't necessarily have to wait for a long time you know. Seek out new mental input at the beginning, both when it comes to work and in your free time.

Meet people or settle deals with new partners and co-workers, thus creating new alliances, which will open up alternative horizons. Employees could have a certain sense of dissatisfaction and look for new opportunities. Be ready for a small change or scramble as some 'system' you had in place may now need to be reworked or revamped, especially if a 'change in schedule' is now going on in your household. You will have all loose ends tied up with the help of people who really matter in high places and this will ease the cash flow. An acquaintance may come forward to seek your help and this is your chance to return a past obligation.

This year particularly, friends are supportive and helpful; especially if your back is against the wall. You should take proper care of your diet as well as routine. Complete rest is advised for those suffering from acute asthma or hypertension.

Mood: Seeking the ideal but in need of finding frequent 'compromise.' Compatible signs: Aries, Gemini. Lucky colours: Purple and Violet. Lucky days: Thursday and Sunday. Lucky numbers: 6, 11, 15, 55, 60. Lucky flower: Rosebud (Red). Lucky gem: Cat's eye.

Amitabh Bachchan (October 11, 1942, Allahabad) needs no introduction but his horoscope is a case study for astrologers due to Saturn, Venus and Mercury besides Neech Raj Bhang Yog . This combination has made him Maha Nayak of the century. While Mercury has bestowed oratory powers, Saturn made him a billionaire and crorepati maker. Four planets in the eighth house victimised him politically and he was involved in controversies and there was a threat to his life too. The 70th year commencing today will bring more laurels and he will reach the zenith of Bollywood. In 2012, he may suffer from a small stomach problem.
