IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Village affair!
Explore different cultures or shop till you drop at the two fairs in and around Chandigarh this Saturday
Mona

An ethnic village with 145 huts, right in Chandigarh, where arts, crafts and folk traditions from all over India mingle is what awaits you at Colours and Sounds of South India. National Crafts Mela, a joint venture by Chandigarh administration and North Zone Cultural Centre, on at Kala Gram, Manimajra, brings a delightful blend of rich culture and traditions from across the country.

A magnificent, colourful temple-like gate welcomes one to this South Indian village that has been set up by leading layout artist Anoop Giri. This fair brings with it vivid cultural traditions as well. Beats of the drum fill this otherwise quiet area as some 300 artistes practice their music and dance sequences. With them comes the culture not only of the temple state, but also entire south-eastern belt. Acclaimed handloom and craftpersons from all over the country and a few from SAARC countries — Sri Lanka and Nepal — display their artifacts at the fair.

The foodie in you has an enormous treat in waiting as stalls from different regions dish out their typical delicacies. Not only southern states, Rajasthani dishes, apart from the regular, are worth a try. The mela formally opens at 5:30 with a spectacular cultural presentation though the craftsmen start setting up their stalls from Saturday morning. The evening is reserved for a special South Indian sound and colour show. Get a feel of the rich temples of Tamil Nadu, backwaters of Kerala as well as Deccan caves at the crafts mela, on at Kalagram!

Willow Bazar

This weekend, Vanity Fair — A Winter’s Tale brings beer, barbecue and lots of shopping by the poolside fountain. Whispering Willows around two kilometers from Zirakpur on the Ambala road has an array of first-time exhibitors for Diwali special. One can shop for clothes, jewels, home as well as garden accessories here. Help a cause by shopping at The Haat — an eco-friendly market place - or buy products made by jail inmates and slum children at the stalls set up by NGOs.

Enjoy the evening with live performance by Vintage Andre who strums the guitar and singers Neil Diamond and Chris Rea accompany him. Take freaky photos at the Fun Photo Booth with odd props and in weird backdrops for a keepsake!

On the road …again
Raghu, Rajiv and Rannvijay, in Chandigarh for the audition of MTV Roadies 9, share how despite criticism from some quarters the show is attracting more and more youngsters
Jasmine Singh

You blame them for putting your ‘brought-up-with-love-and-care kids’ into dangerous situations; you hold them responsible for instigating an out-of-control behaviour in them. Understandable! But then why do you send them back to the same rut? While you rake your grey cells, get your eyes off the never-ending sob stories on television, Raghu, Rajiv and Rannvijay, in Chandigarh for the audition of MTV Roadies 9, share why despite the condemnation youngsters queue up in search of fun or identity

We are coming back

A dedicated page on Facebook, regular tweets; people have made Roadies the target of their wrath. Ironically, the same group is back for auditions whenever and wherever it happens. “There can never be a single reason behind what makes the show a cult - it might be a craving to find their identity or they probably don’t want to be another face in the crowd or the youth wants to test itself. These could be the major connecting points for the show. Besides, it is made with complete honesty and anything made honestly will connect with the youth,” shares Rajiv. As for Raghu, tagged as a watch-out-for, “I don’t know why they come back to Roadies every year despite the hatred that some of them show for me.”

Expect the expected…or the unexpected

This season, Roadies 9 will hit relatively unknown territories in United States of America, where the contestants will have to put everything at stake as it’s ‘everything or nothing’ this time. Adrenaline rush? Raghu has something to add to it. “New experiences every year, through my work and otherwise, have changed me as a person also, which gets reflected in the show. The change also comes in because we want it to change. The whole process of Roadies is so intense and draining that it cannot be planned.” We look for some hint in the conversation! “We are not here to surprise youngsters; it is just a byproduct of stuff that is never planned. If we go by the plan, then the whole thing about casting for reality show is compromised.” No surprise? “Surprising anyone is not difficult, but we don’t intend to do that,” Rajiv clears his stance.

Chandigarh, you have it

You have to check out for the audition venue for Roadies to believe the number and kind of youngsters who enroll for auditions. Raghu thinks that youngsters in the city have acceptance and energy, which is why coming back to Chandigarh is always a pleasant idea. You don’t expect a similar answer from the twin. Rajiv adds, “Youth in Chandigarh are not exposed to the same kind of opportunities like the youth in metro cities. So, they have to work hard to make things happen in life, which gives them a killer, go getter attitude.”

The change in me

Eight seasons and the 9th one is on the roll. Expect the expected here, don’t jump out of your hatred zone if Raghu and Rajiv share that they have also changed in the whole process of Roadies. “I have become more tolerant to the motivations and expressions of youth. I have stopped judging them harshly. They might have weaknesses as a generation, but they can’t be judged on right or wrong,” shares Rajiv who is ready with his production Master Chef Season 2. “We are open to any kind of creative work, but that should excite us.” Are you still interested?

Ayushmann turns Donor

After Ranvir Shorey, Purab Kohli and Ranvijay Singh, it is time for another VJ to rock the cinema world. Active as a television anchor and VJ Ayushmann Khurrana will now be seen on the big screen in Shoorjit Sircar’s quirkily titled film, Vicky Donor.

Ayushman plays a Punjabi cricket player-sperm donor in love with a Bengali girl, to be played by television actress Yami Gautam, known from the soaps Chand Ke Paar Chalo and Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam.

“Vicky Donor is not a serious take on the subject of sperm donation. I want to take a light-hearted look at the taboo attached to infertility and artificial insemination,” says director Sircar.

Sircar has been researching the subject for the past three years. Ayushmann was chosen because of his popularity among the younger crowd.

The Roadies winner who’s been anchoring several musical shows on television, has been meeting medical experts to study the subject of sperm donation. One of the top consultants in the field has been taken on board as the medical adviser for Vicky Donor.

Says the director: “Ayushmann and I have been meeting doctors and donors from Mumbai and Delhi since 2009. Ayushmann has an immediate connect with the younger generation. For the part of Vicky, I wanted a face that was easily identifiable and yet unexposed in cinema.”

Ayushmann says he has been studying acting.

“I attended theatre workshops with professor NK Sharma in Delhi to get that Dilliwala feel. It wasn’t difficult since I am from the north,” he says.

Ayushmann claims to have turned down three films in favour of Vicky Donor, because of the “unique subject and the director’s credibility”. — IANS

No matter how much the men in India ogle at fair skinned models and the poker straight face, there is no doubt that the mutyaar from Punjab will always make for the perfect picture.

Keeping this concept in mind, Mohit Bhardwaj, a model-turned actor, has launched Shining Star Media. "We will basically provide a platform to the upcoming models and polish them for the ramp," he says.

Mohit, who was in the city to launch a beauty contest, has already done his homework and short listed 32 participants for the contest, Modelle De Lenne.

Sharing his idea about the contest, he says, "It is important for budding talent in the modelling industry to undergo proper grooming sessions. I am just trying to do that." Looking each bit of a model himself, he spared no moment in introducing his contestants. "The selection criteria are fresh faces and of course, the most essential ingredient, height," he says. Apart from getting the walk right, he plans to ensure that the models get in touch with the best in the industry and ensure there is best to absorb from. "We have spoken to a few Delhi-based photographers who will be working on the portfolios of the selected models," he says. Looking prim and proper, the models gracefully adorned the stage and posed for the anxious shutterbugs.

With so much happening in the modelling industry, it is impossible to stand out. "This why, for the first time, the competition will have cash prizes for the winners of the contest," he informs us.

So if you have starry eyes and are looking for walking the ramp for JJ Valaya's upcoming spring summer collections, your dreams have a new address.

Green Thumb
For greener pastures
satish narula

With the onset of winter, the time spent in the garden is much more, especially on weekends or holidays. What you need the most in the garden is the green lawn. But one main problem is to maintain 'that green factor' in the lawn which becomes a casualty due to cold. And gardeners, losing that sheen is our own doing.

In the winter, the grass suspends growth and whatever growth is already is sustained through the winter. Any new growth normally gets killed and it is more so when there is dearth of water at any time due to one or the other reason. Another cause is the accumulation of water in patches where the level of the lawn is not correct. The shifting of the sun is another factor. Well, such factors are beyond the control of the gardeners and it is better to treat such patches for developing a feature using some artifacts or pebbles rather than keeping it as a 'poor lawn'. Such patches also retain more moisture for a longer time due to shade.

Keeping the growth pattern of the grass, it is important to adjust the time of mowing. The last mowing to the lawn should not be extended beyond the second week of October. If we do so in the late October or in the month of November, the surface greenery of the lawn is removed and since there is almost nil growth of grass during the winter, the browning remains till the time when the grass finds conducive temperature to put-forth new growth. Even if there is some growth, that gets killed due to low temperature. So hurry up, do the last mowing immediately if your lawn needs a manicure.

Rascals

Rascals is a comedy about the joys of conning, where Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn play two cool competing conmen trying to out-scheme each other in consistently amusing and surprising set-ups. But when both fall for the same girl (Kangana), the competition reaches a new level as both men attempt to outwit each other to win over the surprisingly elusive Kangana. Since much of the comedy involves people taking advantage of one another, having everything put forward in such a manner that Rascals becomes an enjoyable journey throughout, with an interesting twist at the end.

Starring: Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranaut, Arjun Rampal, Lisa Haydon and Chunkey Pandey.

Tasteless jokes

The gags in the movie are very stale and tasteless. Even the situational comedy lacks freshness. — Sahil Sharma, student

Not funny

Seriously, this comedy movie is not at all funny. David Dhawan needs to retire because we can’t bear movies by him any more. — Vaani Kukreja, bank employee

Arjun looks cool

A pointless comedy with dialogues lacking true sense of meaning. But, Arjun Rampal is a silver lining because he looks cool and is in control. — Gauri Bhullar, student

Love Breakups Zindagi

Now how do they fill the void in their lives and how do they seek pleasure in each other’s company is interesting.

Starring: Dia Mirza, Zayed Khan, Tisca Chopra, Farida Jalal, Amar Talwar

Slow and sleepy

The movie lacks freshness and offers no new romantic angle. The first half is very slow, but the second half saves you from sleeping. — Kanchan Dogra, student

Stunning Dia

Zayed Khan’s guy-next-door look fails completely. Dia Mirza looks amazingly gorgeous in her stylish costumes. — Manik Matharoo, bank employee

When past is perfect
Designer Amit Kashyap’s collection is about the traditional brocade and zari work, which he says will never go out of fashion
Ashima Sehajpal

Amit Kashyap with his models
Designer den: Amit Kashyap with his models

Certain trends so conveniently fall out of the domain of what is in fashion and what is out of fashion! From the heirloom collection to what designers flaunt on the ramp, these have been here ever since. The fashion fraternity in India can never rule out brocade, gotta patti, zari-work, sequins, phulkari and other traditional crafts that make up the core of Indian couture.

For Delhi-based designer Amit Kashyap too, these are the safe bets, “Even after ten years from now, I know I will be using the same traditional works on my creations. What any Indian designer is making today is certainly an off-shoot of an age-old design.” He doesn’t mind accepting that old designs are being tweaked by designers to come up with something new. “And there is nothing negative about it. When our culture is so rich and diverse, it will obviously reflect in the present times.”

So, as expected, his creations boast of intricate zari-work, heavy gotta patti, sequins - the sum of which is a lot of bling. A piece that he put on display has pesli work highlighted by golden zari work. He has used a lot of bright colours in his ensemble as well. “For that matter, even colours in India can never go out of fashion. Especially in North India, bright colours are always in demand.”

For the same reason, this is his second visit to Chandigarh with his collection in the last six months. His bridal collection begins from Rs 10,000 and goes up to three lakhs. A novelty about Amit’s visit to the city this time is that he has also brought his just launched décor collection. It is entirely hand-made and eco-friendly. He makes it a point to clear what eco-friendly means, “People often mistake it for stuff made from wood or other natural resources. Contrary to the belief, it is material that has been recycled and that doesn’t leave any residue behind.”

Amit has never displayed his work in any of the fashion weeks in India, though his collections are sold out every season. “The fashion weeks in India do not directly attract customers, they are rather meant for retailers. I never felt the need to be a part of any fashion show because I wanted to cater to the customer directly. That helps in understanding the market and demand of the consumer better.” But at the same time, he supports the bifurcation of fashion in India. A fashion week dedicated to couture, prêt, jewellery, men, regions, he says, helps lessen the confusion. ashima@tribunemail.com

On the style meter

Very rarely you will spot television beauties in casual clothes because even when they are promoting their shows they are in their costumes. But it was a lovely evening where most of the TV celebs came in their best clothes and some came in their worst. At the ITA Awards Night, we spotted some TV beauties. Take a look

Pooja Gor: Protagonist of the show Pratigya. We like the baby pink colour but the work around the bust is very ordinary. Why can’t television actresses buy better shoes? Her simple hair and make-up looks average. She could have done better. Sayantani Ghosh: She looks sexy. We like the lacy black saree and the way she has draped it. The make-up is perfect too and she looks super sexy and confident. Only if her clutch was a match to her sheer saree. Earrings complement the look well. Aishwarya Sakuja: Toasty from Saas Bina Sasural, we like her hair up-do and make-up. The ruffled top and tight skirt flatter her figure and the clutch works well too but those peep toes, looks like she picked up the wrong ones in a hurry. The slender bare neck looks nice. Bhairavi Raichung: Anandi’s mother in Ballika Vadhu. She may have dressed differently from her character but the look is unimpressive. Seems like the designer had limited raw material. The make-up is amateurish and the skirt is not festive enough. Kamya Punjabi: Uttara of Maryada Lekin Kab Tak. She is covered in layers of embroidered cloth in different colours. It is a very heavy outfit and fit for a wedding. Looks like she confused the awards function with a wedding ceremony. Reshmi Desai: Tapasya of Uttaran: The multi-coloured polka-dot saree is a mess! We are sorry but she looks scary with the overdose of bronze make-up. Poor thing should have looked in the mirror before stepping out. Her bangles look so tacky!

Star Track
Tribute turned sour

A Michael Jackson tribute concert will go ahead this weekend in Wales despite squabbling among the late singer's siblings, a backlash from fans, a headline act withdrawing at late notice and tickets still unsold.

Chris Hunt, head of Global Live Events which is staging the Saturday "Michael Forever" gig in Cardiff, admitted that preparations had been challenging, but blamed "misinformation" for some of the negative headlines.

"I've never been in a situation in my entire career like it where so many false rumours emerged as if from nowhere," Hunt told in an interview.

He denied reports that the promoters had fallen out with Jackson's estate and said that any large family like that of the "King of Pop" was bound to have disagreements, particularly one that lived in the bright media glare.

"It's going to be a huge and spectacular event," Hunt said of the gig at the Millennium Stadium, where there will be room for over 60,000 people. Taking part in the concert will be Jackson's brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie and his sister La Toya, who will be performing live in public for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Also, expected to be present are his mother Katherine, three children and several other close family members. Brothers Jermaine and Randy, however, criticised the tribute because it coincided with the involuntary manslaughter trial of Jackson's doctor. Janet Jackson has declined to take part citing the same reason. The Thriller singer, one of the most successful yet troubled artists of the pop era, died in 2009 aged 50 while rehearsing for a series of comeback concerts. —- Reuters

Grand show is on!

With over 120 designers, 200 buyers and an expected revenue of at least Rs.30-35 crore, the focus of the upcoming spring-summer edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) will be on business, not Bollywood, says Sunil Sethi, president of organising body Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

"This season we have as many as 200 buyers, which is the maximum so far. Buyers from France, Italy, Britain, Portugal, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, America, Canada and Israel will add charm to the buyers' list and we are expecting to generate more than Rs.30-35 crore this season," Sethi said. The event will be held here Oct 8-12.

International buyers were happy with the autumn/winter edition 2011 of WIFW, held in April, as the event was low on celebrity quotient and the focus was predominantly on creativity and serious fashion.

Featuring creations by designers like Ritu Kumar, Rina Dhaka, Wendell Rodricks, Malini Ramani,

Tarun Tahiliani, Manish Malhotra, Namrata Joshipura, Nandita Basu, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Nida Mahmood, the latest edition will see diverse talent on the fashion runway.

A prominent name missing from the list of designers this time is Rohit Bal, a veteran known for his exuberant and extravagant shows. But his magic won't be missing from the event.

"Rohit Bal is very much a part of WIFW spring-summer 2012. He will be putting up four stalls. Rohit is part of the FDCI's board members and his contribution is obvious," he said.

Other designers who will put up stalls include Abraham and Thakore, Ashima-Leena, Krishna Mehta, Manoviraj Khosla, Manish Arora, Gaurav Gupta, Preeti Chandra and Nikhita Tandon, among others. — IANS

Clash for supremacy!

When it comes to their most lovable characters, the public has definite choices. That is what has made the cutthroat competition between Bollywood superstars Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Hrithik Roshan interesting.

The three strongmen with their loved characters of Chulbul Pandey (Dabangg), Sultan Mirza (Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai) and Ethan Mascarenhas (Guzaarish), are pitted opposite each other in a race for supremacy, vying to become the Abhineta No1 Bollywood Awards.

Dirty Talk

Vidya BalanEkta Kapoor’s The Dirty Picture directed by Milan Luthria is making the right kind of news regularly because of the star cast and the subject. With audiences raving about the trailer, we asked the actors what their experience was.

Vidya Balan is already missing the shooting of the film. Vidya, who plays Silk Smita in the film, says, “When I started shooting, I was not very comfortable doing such scenes in front of so many crew people but then, Milan calmed me down. He spoke to me and made me feel comfortable. He used to give me all the time to rehearse and get ready. By the end of it, I was comfortable shooting and made a lot of friends. I’m already missing those days but once we start promoting the film I think once again we all will have a blast.”

She added that her chemistry with her costars was different, but she loved the chemistry with Emraan. “Audiences loved our chemistry. There is hatred, as well as lust in our chemistry.”

And on the other hand Milan says, “I have worked with many actresses but Vidya has a spark in her. She knows how she will look on camera. She is a surprise package. When I was writing the script I just couldn’t think of anyone else other than Vidya.”

In between there was also buzz about the sequel to the film. Milan laughed when we asked him that and said, “Let this film release and after looking at the audience response and everything I would comment on that.”

Since The Dirty Picture shooting started there have been many rumours and buzz around the film. There was also news about another important character, who has been kept under wraps. Milan cleared the air stating that the character is based on controversial film journalist of yesteryear, Devyani Chaubal, who passed away in 1995. “Anju Mahendroo is playing that character in the film. We were looking for someone who can carry it well and Anju knew  Devyani on a personal level which was a plus point.”

Dress like a diva

Sonam Kapoor Sonam Kapoor is a fashionista beyond compare. She looks great in Indian and Western wear and is always perfectly turned out. She talks about dressing up and feeling good for the festive season—

n Since it is Diwali, try wearing traditional outfits which you feel comfortable in. You can have a lot of fun with traditional clothes. They are glamourous, comfortable, sexy, and unique. Choose what feels good to you.

n Your options are salwar-kameez or kurta-churidaar or Patiala salwar. You can also wear a ghaghara-choli or Indian-style gown or a saree. You could alternate between these outfits and bold colours are the hot trend right now. Beige and red always work, too!

n You can have a lot of fun with your footwear. Choose fancy flats like gladiators because they look great and are comfortable too. You can wear pumps and peep-toes too.

n There is one rule for make-up—always remove it before going to bed and use the best quality. If your clothes are light coloured or black, wear bright make-up and if your clothes are bright, keep your make-up subtle. Highlight your best features. Hot colours and neon colours are the trend this season.

n It is the festive season, so there are going to be too many sweets on display. It is good to eat but it is better to take time out, say an hour in the morning or evening, to step out and go for a walk. Take 10 minutes out to meditate. It will also help you feel energetic throughout the day. —HRM

Hail the biker chick

Tara D’SouzaTara D’Souza, who plays hottie Malvika in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge was supposed to be in a cab in a scene while she was talking to Preity over the phone.

The cab was brought and everything was all set for the shot when Tara casually mentioned to the director Nupur that she had come to the shoot on her bike. Nupur went over and checked it out. It turned out to be a Royal Enfield Bullet.

This gave her an idea and she decided to call all the men from the crew for their votes. A poll was taken on the spot with all the guys whether they thought it was hot to see a girl riding a bike.

The votes came in and Nupur sent the cab back. The entire shot was taken with Tara riding the bike. Talk about last minute improvisations paying off.

Oh boy!

Nishant Dahiya To be on the sets of Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge could have been any man’s dream come true. It was an all-woman crew. From the director to the assistants to the costume designer to the dialogue writer, they were all women. But it were the women who were having a great time checking out Nishant Dahiya on the sets.

During the shooting of the song Baatein Shuru, the director wanted a shot of the boys in the swimming pool. And when she took off their clothes for the shot, the entire crew went silent. Not because they had to maintain silence, but because the all-girl crew was drooling all over Nishant. Catch Nishant sizzle on screen this August in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. The next poster boy of Bollywood!

Party Time!

Producer Rajan Shahi, known for giving hit shows like Bidaai and Yeh Ristha Kya Kehlata Hain, threw a party for the cast and crew of his new show Kuch Toh Log Kahenge at Madh Island. The cast and crew saw the telecast of the first episode together which was followed by cake cutting and dinner.

Talking about the show, Rajan says, “It feels great to make a unique show like Kuch Toh Log Kahenge and it involved a lot of hard work and team work to put the show together. The casting has been done carefully for each and every character and audiences are surely going to connect to the storyline for its novelty factor”.

Kritika Kamra came directly from the shoot and made heads turn as soon as she entered.  Chak De girl Tanya Abrol was seen smiling as people wondered about her different avtar.
