Dr Veena Garella, a first-batch student of the Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA) in 1961, still remembers her interaction with Le Corbusier, the creator of Chandigarh, who told her that to be an architect, one needed to wear a 16-pocket jacket. According to sources, an official announcement was made in this regard by Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi in New Delhi today. Bhardwaj was also a member of the AICC. “Chandigarh has been able to retain the Le Corbusier’s original concept in spite of an increase in its population with time,” said renowned Portuguese architect and Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, Eduardo Souto de Moura, who was in the city for a presentation during the golden jubilee celebrations of the Chandigarh College of Architecture.

11 hurt in group clash

Eleven persons were injured in a clash between two groups belonging to different communities here last night. The injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment.

One dies in road mishap
Ambala, October 7
One person reportedly died and two others were injured in two different road mishaps in Ambala today. Jasvinder Singh alias Happy, a resident of Bhanokheri village near Ambala City, was riding his scooter when a car hit him on the Ambala-Hissar road near Naggal village. Jasvinder was being taken to the Civil Hospital Ambala City where doctors declared him brought dead. The deceased was working in HVPN at Ismailabad. A case has been registered against the car driver, Kulvinder Singh, a resident of Kaithal district.

Why not enough room for buses & trucks, asks HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the National Highways Authority of India and other respondents why insufficient clearance for buses and trucks has been provided in service lanes along the Zirakpur flyover. Justice Rajive Bhalla has come down heavily on the Chandigarh Police for doing nothing more than ‘lip service’ to the requirement of lane driving. The Administration has also been asked to act or face the consequences.

Two persons were seriously injured when armed persons opened fire at them near Indus Hospital in Phase 3B2 in the wee hours of today. One of the injured, Saudagar Singh, who received a gunshot in the leg, underwent surgery at the PGI, Chandigarh. The assailants fled the scene after the attack.

Four killed in road accidents
Zirakpur (Mohali), October 7
Four persons lost their lives and two others, including a woman, got injured in separate road accidents that took place at Zirakpur, Sohana, Kurali and Balongi in Mohali district.

1 held for snatching car
Chandigarh, October 7
The police arrested a miscreant for snatching a Maruti Alto car from one person in Sector 22 last night. The accused has been identified as 28-year-old Daljeet, who works for a computer hardware engineer. The police has registered a case under Sections 382 and 34 of the IPC.

Goods worth lakhs stolen from house, two shops
Panchkula, October 7
Burglars targeted three places in Panchkula and decamped with cash and goods worth of lakhs of rupees. In the first incident, burglars targeted house No. 706 in Sector 2. The landlord, Raj Bahadur Singh, had gone out of town along with his family and discovered the lock of the main door broken on return yesterday. According to the police, three mobile phones, expensive watches, a camera, Rs 3,000 in cash and some silver coins besides utensils were missing from the house.

Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in a league match of the eighth Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Championship for Boys (U-17) at Sector 3 here today. Batting first, Pakistan were bowled out for 88 runs in 25 overs. Irfan Haider was the main scorer with 34 runs off 48 balls. In reply, Bangladesh achieved the target in 18 overs. Moyenudin Mamun (37) and AR Rafsan Mahmud (20) guided the team to victory.
