Three child workers rescued from bakery
Substandard food products seized, destroyed; owner fined
Attar Singh
Tribune News Service

Ambala, October 6
Officials of the district health department, assisted by those of the labour welfare department, rescued three child workers from a bakery located on the Rattangarh Road, near Ambala City, today.

The officials jointly raided Kisan Bakery after learning about poor working conditions at the bakery and the employment of child workers there. The rescued children, all below the age of 14, belonged to poor families hailing from Uttar Pradesh. They had been sent by their families to work on paltry wages.

The tall claims of the labour department of putting in efforts to check child labour in the town seem to have fallen flat with a large number of children still working at roadside dhabas, tea stalls and restaurants.

According to sources, the bakery was being run without a licence, under unhygienic conditions. A large number of irregularities were found at the bakery. The team seized a large quantity of substandard food products and destroyed these later. The team also seized three domestic LPG cylinders being used for commercial purposes. Ramesh Kumar, owner of Kisan Bakery, was fined for various irregularities.

Sources said the government, in compliance with the guidelines issued by the central government, had imposed a complete ban on the practice of child labour and prohibited the employment of children below the age of 14 as domestic workers or servants in eateries, hotels, motels, tea shops or other recreational centres.

Though efforts have been made by officials concerned to contain the malpractice, the problem seems to have worsened with more and more children being forced into it.

Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow has constituted a special team of officials, comprising Vikas Papreja of the food and supplies department, Vikas Kalia, labour welfare officer, Rishi Raj Gautam, sanitary inspector and a magistrate, to check the malpractice.
