Blast from the past
Just when Bollywood is raving about sequels, a relatively quiet village near Raipur Rani, Haryana, prepares for one as well. Chandrawal, a Haryanavi movie released in 1984 that went on to create history in regional cinema, will soon see its sequel. And you thought only Bollywood knows how to do a Golmaal! Taking a cue from the growing popularity of Punjabi cinema, it looks like Haryanavi movies too are preparing for their share of limelight. Chandrawal 2 boasts of changing the face of Haryanavi cinema. The cast and crew can hardly hold their excitement on the first day of the shoot. The woman behind it
Usha Sharma, the leading lady of Chandrawal, calls the shots. She handles the creative department and is the producer for the sequel. She is like a connecting bridge between the old and the new. "Prabhakar Films is making a comeback with Chandrawal 2. The film is being directed by Dinesh Tundwal, but I will work from behind as someone who will see that the movie justifies Chandrawal, and it doesn't look out of the place. The entire set up is new, including the star cast, which is a positive thing for the film." Nishant and Pooja Prabhakar, working as co-producer and associate director, respectively, of the film, are people who have heard of the success of Chandrawal from fans and their parents. "The trend of sequels is gaining popularity; for us though Chandrawal 2 has a different meaning. We want people to know that Haryana too can offer wholesome entertainment from movies," says Nishant, who believes that Chandrawal 2 will remind people of Chandrawal.
Actors speak
Unlike Shahrukhs or Salmans of Bollywood, Haryanavi cinema does not have a line up of actors. "Finding actors who can speak the dialect is always a problem," shares Usha Sharma. Chandrawal 2 has Shikha Mehra from Bhiwani and Kuldeep Rathi from Sonepat in the lead roles. "I have lived on the stories of Chandrawal and the magic that it created," shares Shikha, who feels it is a challenge to play the lead. "With Usha ji around on the sets, I want to deliver my best." As for Kuldeep, "it is an honour to work in the film. I researched on the film; saw it umpteen times, read the entire stuff on it because I wanted to do justice to my role." The songs of the movie are something to watch out for. They are based on the compositions of famous Haryanvi writer, late Devi Shankar Prabhakar, and are presented by Uttam Singh, Udit Narayan, Shan, Richa Sharma, Sonu Kakkar and Anupama Deshpande. The movie is expected to release in March next year.

Yeh Show Flop nahi hai...
Mona With his wonderful sense of humour, Jaspal Bhatti became a household name after his successful television series Flop Show. In the field of entertainment, Bhatti has made a name for himself with his shorter and crisper punch lines. His mass appeal as satirist has earned him the role of brand icon for Election Commission of India for Punjab Assembly Elections 2012. This PEC graduate (yes, in electrical engineering), Bhatti joined the Punjab government to begin with, but found his calling in the entertainment world. "During college days, I would do skits which were pretty much based on technical humour; they got a good response and I enjoyed doing them a lot," he recalls. Bhatti began with newspapers and then gave a shot at comedy on Jalandhar Doordarshan with Rang Main Bhang. Next was Ulta Pulta, followed by Flop Show that got him wide recognition. Bhatti ventured into film-making next and his Mahaul Theek Hai was a hit. Bollywood flicks, reality shows, Bhatti has moved ahead. Mad Arts, Jaspal Bhatti Film School is doing very well. He shares what makes the 'show' successful. A different thought
"One needs to be out of the ordinary to make a mark." In fact, when everybody wanted to label their show a hit, his was Flop Show and yet, a hit! Assessing a common situation from a different angle has been the USP of his work. Find your field
"It sounds rather clichéd but is very true. One needs to find a field that one enjoys in." "I didn't continue in the government job. Being in this field, I never felt that I am working. I have worked two days in a row and never got tired for I love it so much." Take the family along
"Others might have a different take on it, but I believe the support of family goes a long way in ensuring one's success. For me it has been crucial to have my parents, wife as well as children around me." Get the basics right
Humour has been my field; I made a small beginning with the Nonsense Club. It has been kept alive till date. Though it's not paying in material terms, still we ensure that we do something or the other and pick up recent issues like corruption, price hike or the drying Sukhna. Keep experimenting
"One needn't stop at success. Newness, innovation, experimentation are required if one wants to excel in any field."
Bhatti still gets enthused by a new camera and new techniques! mona@tribunemail.com

Choose your love, love your choice!
Stuck in an eight-to-eight office job while your mind wanders to the best of beaches? Trouble calculating the household budget when office demands you count turnovers? Sick of travel when your work takes you to a new continent each month?
Well, it's very much possible to work and be happy. The need is to know your strengths and harness them just as they say —'make your passion your profession'. Starting early is the key here! "Today, even a 17-year-old has a feeling of failure. How else would you explain the thousands coming to Chandigarh for coaching in various institutes and leaving within a month because they could not adjust?" questions Vijay Rajneesh, from IPAT-34, who has been in the field of aptitude testing since the last decade-and-a-half. Career planning is crucial and yet, often neglected. "Usually, there are two kinds of parents — one, who pass on their ambitions on to their kids. And those who leave kids on their own, to follow their heart. In both cases, it might not work because when left on their own, kids usually make a decision under peer pressure, which might not be the best," says Vijay. This is where professional help comes handy. Though most schools now have aptitude tests and career counsellors, yet, seeing the number of people stuck in wrong jobs proves otherwise! Then there are some who choose smartly. Jagjit Singh, general manager, HFBL, like any other parent, was concerned about his children's future. He went for aptitude tests for both his sons and is glad that he did that. "Being from an engineering background, I picked up that career, but before imposing my will on my children, I decided to go for counselling for both of them," says Jagjit. The aptitude test recognised the 'people's person' trait in his elder son Amanjeet and suggested Human Resources over engineering. Following the counselling, Aman took commerce, completed his BBA and is enjoying his MBA in HR presently. Jagjit opted for aptitude test for his younger son as well and followed. "I am glad that both my sons are doing well in their respective fields. Academics is no burden to them, as they are in the field that they are naturally inclined towards," he says. "Even if you don't take an aptitude test on your own, it is one major part of entrance tests. It is better one knows in advance what field one is suited for and prepare accordingly," says Gagandeep Singh from Engineers Career Group, which offers an online aptitude test. With plenty of online tests available, one can navigate through the virtual world to find a direction. Or if you are looking for professional counselling, it's readily available in the tricity. mona@tribunemail.com

Bendish’s clutch line
Designer Felix Bendish, who is known for his scarves and fashion accessories range, is set to launch a clutch line at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) Spring-Summer 2012.
"This is the first time I am launching my art clutches, totally inspired from rain forest concept called - the nest. The collection will be in a riot of neon colours blended perfectly with dramatic fashion sensibility," Bendish said. The designer's signature style is a mix of traditionalism with strong Asian influences, but this season he has tried to bring variety. "I love playing with textures, so using the idea in surface ornamentation was fun and challenging. There has been no usage of leather in the entire collection and I played with embroideries. — IANS

The road less travelled
Focusing on the locals and their life in the Himalayan region, six photographers from the region stitched together their passion for pictures in an exhibition ‘Beauty along the Treacherous Road’. Although they have never really travelled together and come from diverse backgrounds, they think on the same lines - of capturing the journey from Srinagar to Manali.
Gurpreet Singh, Jatin Gandhi, Pawan Singh, Sanjay Kaushal, Sanjeev Sharma and Sarabjit Pandher have given their own definition to their travels as well as adventures. An engineer by profession, Gurpreet did not stick to the set rules of photography. The mountains and their clear reflection are worth the caption Heavenly Reflections. “It has now been five-six years that I have been enjoying photography. I took a trip from Sringar to Manali in June this year, which is when I clicked most of these,” he says. His visit to the highest motorable roads gave him a few shots he loves to talk about. “While travelling to Ladakh, we were certain we would be able to see a Ladhaki kitchen. Unfortunately, we found nothing but manmade creations.” Gurpreet intelligently captured the construction and destruction work. “I just wanted to show the damage caused by the flash floods,” he adds. Sarabjit Pandher has also photographed his trips to Srinagar and Leh with an eye on detail. Talking about one photograph, he says, “The plain wall shows the life of a normal man without much trouble.” Moving to the more rugged area of the wall, he says, “This is the life of a Ladhaki.” In between the two patches of the wall is a small tap with a bucket of red colour, denoting the vividness in the life of people of Ladakh. “The dark window is the struggle for life and the flower in the middle shows the courage to still look forward,” he says. He has also captured the moods of a girl’s life - the innocence, the colour in her life and the coyness. If Leh came alive in Pandher’s photos, Sanjay Kaushal’s pictures had a philosophy to them. “What I wanted to show was how small a man is in front of nature,” he says. This clearly justifies the shades of brown, a river and a man looking like a speck of dust.

Back to the roots
Divya Dutta I am so excited! Visiting your roots always does that to you. And I will be in Ludhiana on the 9th of this month. To play my game Extraa Shots challenge in my own shaher. I have really enjoyed the game asking filmy questions on Sonymax show every Sunday to people who are big movie buffs. But going to Ludhiana is different. It has lots of memories attached, my house in Sahnewal, those early mornings to get ready for school, Sacred Heart Convent, as Sahnewal is further away. Those school corridors, annual functions where I loved performing and yes the scary maths classes! I somehow never fell in love with it. And my favourite biology teacher! She got me smiling the moment she entered the class. The way I did as Rosy miss in Stanley ka Dabba! And then of course my college the Government College for Women, about which I have already written. Not to forget the tilliwaala and kulchawala right outside the gate. This time I have a few things to do after my work. Walk up the corridors of my school and college and relive those childhood and teenage years spent there, go to the baraf ka golewala outside the Government College for Boys who still recognises me as the student having the maximum number of golas! Phir ghumar mandi ki pheri, as we used to say and a round at Shiv chaat! Then buying some Punjabi music albums at Padhore House. And the most important, meeting those who make Ludhiana special— friends, relatives, teachers…who gave me love, unconditional protective love! As I give my list of to do things to my public relations person, she smiles, so much you will do in a day? Ha ha, we will see, she says. And I am still adding things to my list for that one day…as Javed saab says in Zindagi na Milegi Dobara, “Khwaishen hain to zindagi hai!” It’s so rejuvenating to take back a few of your childhood memories back to your hectic life! I am excited as a child to be in Ludhiana on the October 9. Aap tayyar hain? |

Comfort zone
Every person has a sense of style. Yet there are only a few who’d attract second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be tousled hair, it could be torn jeans. This week’s face in the crowd, Riya Sood, a graduate from MCM DAV College, is all about comfort meets experimentation, when it comes to her clothes and colours. Your sense of style is… I believe in looking trendy and being confident. You’d find lots and lots of halters, skirts and shorts in my wardrobe. I love mixing and matching clothes and styles, in the process I set my own trends and not imitate anyone. Latest addition in the wardrobe… A one piece hot pink dress by a local designer. Brand freak or street smart? Certainly street smart. Initially I used to be brand conscious but not any more. Brands themselves are way too common these days. Moreover I don’t need any label telling me what to like and what not to like. Choose one—sporty, glamorous or chic Chic. That’s what suits me and describes my sense of style. Your style icon … Priyanka Chopra. Everything she wears suits her. Put her in western clothes or dress her up in an Indian attire, she’s equally good. Who’s the worst dressed celebrity around? Vidya Balan, for one simple reason that I don’t like the way she dresses. Whatever she wears doesn’t suit her age and doesn’t make any style statement. One fashion trend you don’t understand… Harem pants. I hate them and don’t think they make any kind of style statement. Your take on accessories It’s no rocket science that with accessories a simple outfit can be made to look beautiful. Whenever I feel like I do sport them. One thing that boosts your confidence? Heels, for obvious reasons. And black kohl, for the perfect smoldering look that it lends to your eyes. I would love to be dressed up by…. Neeta Lulla and Manish Malhotra. Their collections are catchy and different. Their designs each time have something new to offer. (As told to Manpriya Khurana) (If you think you too fit the profile, get in touch with us a lifestyletribune@gmail.com We’ll sift the best from the rest) |

Friendly tale
Saqib Saleem, the lead from Mujhse Fraandship Karoge, who comes from Delhi has a pretty interesting story about how he got into the film business. This talented dude is from Delhi, where his dad runs a successful restaurant business called Salleel’s with almost fourteen outlets. He was never the studious type, so he assisted his father for almost eight months. Very soon, he got tired of all the food around him and realised he wanted to act. His dad told him to take a year off and give acting a serious chance. Saqib came over to Mumbai from Delhi and auditioned with YRF for almost six months. Meanwhile, he managed to do a few ads with Pepsi (the one with Ranbir), Tata Docomo, KFC, Sprite and Bar One. In fact, one day, when he was driving along with his dad, he passed by the YRF office, he randomly halted and told his dad that his first film would be a Yash Raj film for sure. And guess what, his dream came true and he started with Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. Ironically, he plays a foodie in the film.

The true entertainer
Saba Azad’s character in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, Preity, aspires to become a photographer but in real life, she is a vocalist. She has crooned for bands like Blackstratblues and Ashu and The Petridish Project. But this talent of hers was exploited in the film. The crew ensured that she was made to sing on set all the time and entertain everyone around her. She said it felt like she was playing antakshari with herself.

Pretty girl Karishma Tanna, who dated Bappa Lahiri and Jackie Bhagnani, now has a new love in her life apparently. She is good friends with choreographer Hanif Hillal who is Pooja Bedi’s ex. As the two hide behind the clichéd ‘we are good friends’ tag, they have been appearing together at parties. Buzz is their close friends know of their closeness but perhaps the duo wants to wait for a while before going public. Once burnt twice

Winner takes it all
Ten-year-old Azmat Hussain from Jaipur won the Zee’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs. Azmat was thrilled to receive the winner’s trophy from superstar Shah Rukh Khan and glad to win a family trip to Disneyland too. Kailash Kher summed it all up saying, “All 18 contestants were fabulous singers in their chosen genres, the competition was always stiff. Here’s wishing Azmat heartiest congratulations on his victory and my blessings for a fantastic future!”
Happy and fit
Television actor Anas Rashid, aka Suraj Rathi of Star Plus’ Diya Baati Aur Hum, loves to be fit but he feels that it’s very difficult to stay fit while concentrating on work. He believes in one mantra - stay happy and have a good sleep. Here’s Anas on his health routine and more. What do you think of TV actors and their fitness and health? Nowadays, most actors have become very conscious about their fitness and health. I have seen and heard many well-known actors and even second leads arguing with their creative heads about going to gym. According to me, an actor must always concentrate on his work first. And as for staying healthy, it is important to have a good sleep for five to six hours.
What is your fitness regime? At the moment, I really don’t follow any fitness regime though I love to go gymming. Due to my hectic shooting schedule, I am not doing any exercises but concentrating on a balanced diet and sleep, which I feel is important to stay healthy. Is it tough being an actor, working in a serial and maintaining a healthy body? Oh yes, it is very difficult for any actor to have a fit body, work continuously and then to go to the gym. I believe that a healthy body is derived from your genes and so its 60 per cent genetic and 40 per cent work out and diet. Which is more compromised—eating habits or working out because of your schedule? As actors we compromise with working out. Sometimes it really gets hectic while shooting and we don’t find time for a workout. I believe if you are not working out on a regular basis then one must avoid late night parties. Since when have you been working out? I come from a small town in Punjab which has no big gyms. My actual working out started when I saw Salman Khan shirtless in one of his films. My aim was to be just like Salman. I used to workout on the terrace of my house for maximum two hours. Do you love going to the gym or are happier to do yoga, aerobics or other exercises too? I feel everything should be done in proportion, so we remain in the shape. Whenever I get time, I do some cardio, stretching. I love meditation and aerobics too which keeps me healthy. What would you suggest to people regarding fitness? Please don’t ignore your fitness. Get a good six hours of sleep, drink lots of water, have small meals every two hours, eat fruits but bananas only early in the morning. — HRM
Splitsville
While mature relationships are a rage on television at the moment, there are few examples in real life too. Buzz is that TV producer Pearl Grey of Pratigya fame was in a relationship with Yuvraj Malhotra, who appeared in Zee’s Ghar Ke Lakshmi Betiyann. They were together and happy for three years, with rumors of Pearl making a show on their real life too. But now that is on the back burner as
their relationship has gone kaput. Rumours are that Yuvraj cheated on her. Wedding bells
Kinshuk Mahajan is all set to wed his girlfriend Divya this November. As the duo got engaged last year, it was only a matter of time before they fixed the date of their nuptials. As they are from Delhi, plans for a grand wedding there is already afoot. Leaping ahead
Zee TVs Shobha Somnath Ki will soon see a 16-year leap as the show didn’t garner the expected TRPs. The channel hopes this leap will interest the viewers. They also changed the producer bringing in Siddharth Tewary of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo fame. Soon the show will have a makeover and new characters as the kids will grow up and Amrita Raichand doesn’t want to play a mom to a teenager. The show stealer
Shah Rukh Khan was a celeb guest on all finales of reality shows last weekend. Every channel seemed to be a favourite with the King Khan who graced Star Plus’ Just Dance, Zee’s Li’l Champs and Colors India’s Got Talent 3. The all-rounder Shah Rukh thrilled the audiences with his presence and of course promoted his Diwali release RA.One at all shows. He danced, hugged and overwhelmed not just the viewers but the contestants too. His inimitable style, wit and dance surely added the needed glamour to these shows.
