Season 5 of the Bigg Boss has twelve girls, one man and one transgender as contestants. What lies ahead is a lot of fun, although women audiences feel a bit let down

Finally…they came, we saw and wondered — what's happening? Twelve girls, one man and one transgender, this is the assortment for Bigg Boss Season 5. As Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt called upon one contestant after the other, we wondered where the Jean Seans, Mike Tysons, Mikas — the rumoured male inmates of the house — were.

What came out was somewhat surprising and strange. One after the other, the girls — Pooja Bedi, Raageshwari, Mandeep Bevli, Shradha Sharma —performed on stage and we kept looking for a hunk, other than a Shakti Kapoor, hidden somewhere. Bigg Boss 5 has tossed up the unexpected. We share notes from the audiences and some ex-contestants on what they expect from the all-girls, one boy and one transgender team.

Cat calls

I am feeling sad for the women audience; there is no other guy than Shakti Kapoor. I am sure many women are disappointed. As far as cat fights go, they can't be avoided. Besides, with contestants coming from different backgrounds, and that too women, wait till the real masala rolls out. Nevertheless, I feel it doesn't matter whether the number of women exceeds men because Big Boss is about people from different backgrounds coming together.

Parvesh Rana, ex-Bigg Boss inmate

It is going to be fun

I had heard that Mike Tyson and Poonam Pandey would be part of Bigg Boss house, but we have a strange mix of women - Pooja Bedi, the less heard of Gulabo Sapera, the pregnant Sonika Kaliraman, I am expecting a lot of fights, mud-slinging et al. In fact, this season will be fun. Twelve women contestants, Shakti Kapoor and Laxmi, I can bet that the channel has roped in heavy duty spice this time.

Harakaran Sidhu, Kabaddi player

Red alert

Contrary to what the audiences were expecting, this time Bigg Boss has come up with an interesting assortment. Now just imagine so many women, all saas bahu shows will go for a toss! Expect daily fights, name calling and a lot of entertainment. Besides, the channel must have kept something in the kitty; they will send in male contestants if it begins to get boring.

Vindu Dara Singh, winner of Bigg Boss Season 4

Shakti Kapoor Sonika Kaliraman Laxmi Narayan Tripathi

Shakti ala rey

I don't know what others are thinking about the women team in Bigg Boss house, but I can already see a lot of entertainment. Shakti Kapoor is going to be the fun factor this season. Juhi Parmar and Pooja Bedi are two contestants who will keep the fights as well as the entertainment factor alive. More men in the house would have definitely added to the masala, but who can give more masala to the audiences than these pretty babes.

Charu Raina, student

Expect the unexpected

I have a lot of hope from transgender Laxmi Narayan Tripathi. It will be great to see how other contestants take to her and how she adjusts with others around. All the other seasons have been entertaining with boys and girls; some flings and fights. This time expect the unexpected with more fights and only fights. Isn't women wrestling fun?

Item code
Minna Zutshi

Actress Sambhavna Seth does not mince words when it comes to her work. The tag 'item girl' is anathema to her. It is a pejorative term, she says. It objectifies women. "It's an unwelcome tag. I'm not an item or an object. For that matter, no woman is an item," she announces. She considers herself to be a performer, who loves her work. Dance is her passion. And, by her own admission, she's partial to it.

"A good dancer can be a good actress but not necessarily vice versa. The reason is simple — when you learn dance you automatically learn the art of emoting," she says.

Dandiya as a dance form may not be very popular in this part of the country, yet there are some who organise special dandiya nights
Jasmine Singh

Just Dance: Women perform dandiya in their traditional finery

So, you don’t need to order coffee and sit at a lounge to strike a conversation with someone. There are umpteen places that serve the purpose — dandiya nights being one of them. Put your dandiya sticks together, soak in the festive spirit; slip into a designer chaniya choli, invite a DJ and dance away to glory. Although Chandigarh residents don’t seem to be terribly smitten by dandiya, this doesn’t stop people from throwing parties at their place. The spirit is alive and so is the festivity.

Turn on the music

Festivals are all about splurging, bright colours and music; just about all kinds. And when it is Garbha, how can you ignore Falguni Pathak and Dil Lai Gayi Kudi Gujarat Di by Jasbir Jassi. There is more music. DJ Samin from Zirakpur is playing at two dandiya parties on Tuesday. “I will be playing all remix numbers from Bollywood,” he says. “At discotheques, dandiya and music is not very popular, but at private parties it sure is a hit.” Samin, however, points out that it is not the same dandiya that people do in Mumbai or Gujarat; it is the North Indian version of it. “I have been requested to play a lot of Punjabi numbers, so you can understand the kind of dandiya we have here.”

Under my umbrella

With Samin already clearing the status of dandiya at lounges and discotheques, it is private parties that have created a festive spirit. Seema Shastri and her friends have organised a dandiya party at their common friend’s house in Sector-8 on a Tuesday afternoon. “Festivals are common to all and I personally believe in celebrating each one of them. Besides, dandiya follows navratras, which makes it auspicious. We don’t how to dance on dandiya steps, it is the spirit that matters for us.” Seema and her friends have bought designer chaniya cholis from Delhi and they are all set to flaunt it.

Ditto for Harish Saxena, city-based businessman who has also thrown a dandiya bash at his farmhouse in Kaithal, “I have invited my friends, we will be giving them dandiya sticks and we have roped in a deejay who will play dandiya numbers. We have also invited professional dandiya dancers from Mumbai, so that our friends know how to dance,” he says.

Hit or miss

Valentine’s, Father’s or Mother’s Day are still popular with the youngsters here, but when it comes to matching steps on dandiya beats, they feel they do not have enough options. As Manish Sharma, a civil engineering student says, “Kalagram is the only place where we have dandiya. The city doesn’t rock to dandiya beats, maybe because youngsters do not understand the importance of the festival, and also because they do not know how to do the dandiya dance,” adds Manish who would want to see more dandiya parties in the near future. “I have heard that dandiya nights are real fun; you meet new people, make friends and eat real good stuff. We should have the same in Chandigarh as well.”

NATURAL canvas
WE, a group of Indian contemporary women artists, organised an exhibition of paintings—Creative Perspectives
Sabia Talwar

Nature - high mountains, cloud cover, misty weather, green trees - and artists from around the world became one at Jai Jagadamba Temple, Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh, for a five-day international workshop during the last week of September. The first week of October witnesses the results – in the form of an exhibition at the Government Museum & Art Gallery, Sector-10, Chandigarh.

Says Sadhna Sangar, president of WE group, “The workshop at Khajjiar brought together artists from India as well as abroad. Artists always need a change and we received a very good response in terms of participation. We would like to continue this in future as well.”

Khajjiar is known as the Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh and artists got a chance to paint in an atmosphere that was serene and soulful. The guest artist and president of United Artists from Maldives, Hussain Afeef, painted a bee-hive in rich golden-yellow colour immediately after one of the member was bitten by a honey bee! Says Hussain, “As an artist, I really liked the inspiring natural surroundings at Khajjiar. Another canvas of mine gels the beauty of a girl with that of the village.”

As for Amita, a member of the ‘WE’ group from Kharar, Punjab, the inspiration was the height they had reached from the plains. Shares Amita, “My paintings portray the reflection of greenery through the clouds covering it, and also my feelings at such a height.”

The participants from Maldives had a similar experience at a height of 6,400 ft above sea level (their homeland is barely three feet above sea level). Says Ahmed Naeem, founder member, United Artists of Maldives, “The true inspiration definitely was the climate and the geographic features around. These types of camps have a very unique concept of fostering an association among the artists.”

Developing a routine
Jesse Grewal

Whether it is to correct a hook or a slice, a correct grip is the most important part. All curved shots or shot which turn in the air are caused by a club face closed in a hook or open in a slice. A strong grip either with the lead hand – left hand in right handed players or the right hand could cause the club face to be closed. To get a repeatable grip one needs to develop a repeatable pre-shot routine. Watch the top professionals on TV and note their routines. Try and copy your favourite players and commit and follow their routines on all your shots.

There are different routines for the long game and different ones for short game and putting.

One of the common routines begin with either taking the grip with your left hand by your side and then picking the club up in front of you before taking the right hand grip with the club angled at about 45 degrees from your arms.

This entails the following steps—

Hang your left arm by your side to find your neutral position (picture 1). Two to three knuckles will be visible if viewed from the front in a mirror. Take the club in your left hand and lift it up in front of you

( Picture 2). You should have no gap between the left thumb and the rest of the left hand. The ‘V’ formed will point between your right collar bone and your right shoulder.

Pick up the club so that it forms an angle of approximately 45 degrees above horizontal and get your right hand palm facing the target. Separate the little finger from the middle two fingers and separate the index finger too. Now, place the right hand on the club either with an overlap or interlock grip. The right hand must cover the left thumb and the ‘V’ formed of the right hand should be parallel to the one of the left hand

( pictures 3,4 and 5).

This routine would help the beginners and high handicappers. Some tour professionals pick up the club initially with the right hand and then place their left hand. This is a common routine in short game too. Next week’s article would give you the steps to follow if you would prefer to take the club with your right hand first.

HEART talk
Party problem
Parvesh Rana

I am 18 and recently I have been exposed to parties and night life. My parents vehemently oppose to this, which is the cause of fights at home everyday. I can’t make them understand that not all parties are bad. At the same time I don’t want to cheat or lie to them. Can you suggest a middle path?

Amisha Sarin, Zirakpur

Most parents are skeptical when their kids, especially girls, go out for parties. You cannot blame them for this. Why don’t you explain to them nicely and ask them to set a deadline. I would then suggest that you stick to the deadline, follow the rules set by your parents, and they wouldn’t have any problem.

Talk it out

I am married man with two kids. I work in a MNC, off late I have noticed that my boss is showing interest in my personal life. I am not comfortable with it. Please suggest.

Akash Singh, Chandigarh

You have to be curt as well as polite in this situation. You have to put across your message that you are not interested in sharing personal details, and if possible put the same on the official mail.

Food for thought
Women think more about food than sex

More than 50 per cent of women in a study confessed that they thought about food more than sex. Ten per cent of those surveyed by the weight loss company Atkins, revealed they would feel guiltier straying from their diet than being unfaithful to their partner.

The most common reason for women in Britain to start a diet is trying to attain “the perfect beach body”, while one in seven said they were motivated by cruel taunts over their weight.

More than a third of respondents said they thought about food and dieting more than they thought about their partner and 54 percent confessed they thought about food more than sex, the newspaper said quoting the study.

A total of 1,290 female dieters across Britain were interviewed about their attitudes to dieting and how it affected their relationships. —IANS

Star track
More of Dirty Picture

Milan Luthria promises to announce the remaining cast of Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai 2 by end-October, "We wrap the shoot of The Dirty Picture by the end of September after which I will focus on the sequel."

Given the enormous excitement that the trailer of The Dirty Picture has already created, industry folks are wondering if a sequel will be in the offing. "It's a bit early to think of a sequel," he says. "If people find it uplifting, then I'll be the first to jump at the opportunity. Balaji and I are not closed to the idea."

When the film was announced long back, there was speculation about it being a serious biopic. The bold yet classy poster and trailer have strongly shattered that myth.

Emma gets Help

In scribe's shoes: Emma Stone

Actress Emma Stone says she was surprised after getting a role in The Help.

Stone plays a role of journalist named Eugenia Phelan in the movie directed by Tate Taylor.

"The job came in and I was like, 'I've got to do this.' I didn't think they'd actually take a chance on me. I never think that.

"It's so exciting when it happens and I'm never ready and I'm never prepared and I can't ever play it - but I try. But the thing is, it didn't feel any different than doing a comedy. I credit a lot of that to Tate Taylor, the director. He was always having fun and being goofy," said the 22-year-old.

Eva prefers to act as a man

Big switch: Eva Green

French actress Eva Green says she is attracted towards darker roles and prefers to act “almost like a man” rather than playing girlfriends and love interests.

Green, who is playing a character of a witch named Morgan le Temptress in TV series Camelot, finds the role unique and interesting. “She’s so ballsy.

We don’t have a lot of roles like this. I don’t want to play girlfriends and love interests. It’s great to be almost like a man,” said the 31-year-old. — IANS

Together again

ANother chance: Scarlett Johansson

The Hollywood couple, who parted ways in December last year after two years of marriage, have remained friends and have met up for dinner on more than one occasion in the months since their split.

And the former spouses were back in each other's company on September 29 as they watched the Creep hitmakers performance at Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom.

The changing graph

Slow and steady: Jimmy Shergill

From lover boy to an intense actor Jimmy Shergill has evolved and how He started off as a lover boy, but over a period of 11 years he has gone on to play intense roles. Actor Jimmy Shergill describes his progress as slow and steady - something that helped him grow as an actor in a fast-changing industry.

"Bollywood is changing big time; you can see that different kinds of films are being made. One is typical hardcore commercial, then masala cinema and then you see a lot of unconventional films doing well. The industry has indeed seen a lot of changes," said Jimmy who has also been doing a lot of Punjabi cinema.

Jimmy is currently being seen in Sahib Biwi Gangster and now he is busy shooting for Vikram Bhatt's Dangerous Ishq, which will see Karisma Kapoor making a comeback on the big screen.

"My journey has been slow and steady. I have always tried to find a balance, from a commercial set of films to unusual ones. Sometimes you get a lot of acclaim from the unusual films and I think that kind of films helped me grow as an actor," Jimmy said.

"I would say my progress has been okay. I don't think I have reached a stage where I can say I have progressed. I am somewhere in the middle. I am yet to reach that stage where I can say my progress has been fruitful," he added.

Jimmy made his Bollywood debut with Maachis but he got his share of the limelight as a lover boy in Yash Raj's Mohabbatein. Since then he has done a variety of roles in films like Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai and gradually gone on to play intense roles in Delhi Heights and A Wednesday.

"It was a deliberate attempt not to get stuck in one particular image but at the same time I was offered such kind of roles, so I grabbed the opportunity," said Jimmy.

Jimmy has seen ups and downs in his career, and the 40-year-old actor says he has learned to move on.

"The best part of this profession is that it teaches you to move on. One film is released, it does well or doesn't do well, you move on to another one. It helps overcome the pressures," he said.

However, he admits an individual feels bad if a film doesn't work.

"Each time a film doesn't do well you feel sad about it because you had put in so much of hard work on that film, and especially those that you believed in," he said.

"You feel 'I really wanted this film to do well because I loved the film, I loved the script and enjoyed working on it. I felt that this character was very nice'. When it doesn't work you do feel low, but then as I said you move on," he added.

Sudhir on sexual harassment

Sudhir Mishra is working on a film based on sexual harassment at work place. Talking about the film he said, "The film's name is Inkaar it's a story based on sexual harassment starring Chitrangada Singh and Arjun Rampal. The film will be released by the beginning of next year. It's a film based on relationship. It discusses the shift in dynamics between a mentor and a trainee, when power and greed are added to the equation."

Mixed run

Ameesha Patel started her career with two blockbusters Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Gadar - Ek Prem Katha but the actress, who is turning producer, says her decade long journey in Bollywood has not been easy.

The 36-year-old star has had a mix run in the film industry and Ameesha blames it on the insecure nature of the showbiz.

"Bollywood is a difficult place to be in. People here scrutinise you after every film. Also, you can't ignore the 'camp factor'. You are also expected to get extra special with your hero. Unfortunately or fortunately, these are some of the things that I have never learnt over the years," Ameesha said.

"I thought that talent and merit should be good enough but things didn't turn out to be so rosy. But then it's okay because now I am back to living my passion," said the actress.

Chatter box
Play it one more time!

right notes: Mansi Parekh

Every show has it’s own charm whether it’s a saas-bahu or a reality show. Nowadays reality shows are in! Till today we have seen numerous reality TV shows but very few made a place for themselves. The ones which we miss have a unique style. We asked our TV stars which reality TV show they would like to see again and here is what they said:

Mansi Parekh: I would like to see a new edition of Coke [V] Popstars. They were the pioneers in getting bands to create music. There is a dire need of independent music on the Indian music scene.

Daljit Kaur: I watch TV whenever I get time but very few shows stay close to my heart and one of them in Nach Baliye. I wish I can go back to the show and dance once again. It has some nostalgic moments attached and I loved watching Nach Baliye even when others perform because it’s a wonderful show and I have seen stars growing as dancers with each episode. Apart from Nach Baliye I would like to see Jhalak Dikhla Jaa where one gets a chance to shake leg with a choreographer.

Anuj Sachdev: I would like to see Fear Factor back on Television. It’s one of the most amazing reality shows on TV. Fear Factor is a show which shows the extra -ordinary talent of people, something people are capable of doing, something different from everyday life.

Shake a leg: Muskaan

Lata Sabrawal: Anytime Bigg Boss! That’s one reality show I enjoy watching where you get to see real people. We see those stars mostly as characters on screen but in Bigg Boss house they are real. It’s quite an interesting show though I would like to see it from outside only. And once it starts, you don’t want to miss any episode.

Muskaan Mehani: I love dancing so I would like to see dance shows like Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhla Ja making a comeback. You can see how good TV actors are at performing in real life. I too have a passion for dance and one day would like to perform in Nach Baliye with my partner.

Vishal Malhotra: Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega! A show which gives space to common people to show their extraordinary talent. It’s a beautiful show where people from all over the country come to show their talents. They don’t need any contacts to come onscreen it’s just their sheer talent which brings them here. Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega is what I would like to see again and don’t mind hosting it too.

REALity BITES: Kavita Kaushik

Kavita Kaushik: You know I hardly watch even my own show F.I.R because whole day I am shooting but still I would like Rakhi Ka Swayamwar to make a comeback so that I can switch it off!
