What’s coke-ing?
Musician Leslie Lewis, in Chandigarh for The Coke Studio@MTV musical caravan, shares how Coke StudioIndia is different from its counterpart in Pakistan
Jasmine Singh
Leslie Lewis
Note by Note: Leslie Lewis

Let's acknowledge it for once — the Indian entertainment industry, including music, films, comedy and fashion, is known for taking a cue from other countries. Before you form a judgment, this exercise is only for the sake of inspiration. So, when we thought of bringing down The Coke Studio Pakistan to India, we were pretty much sure of recreating the same magic and fan-following. But criticism from music-lovers encapsulated the whole idea as — 'this isn't like what we heard in Coke Studio Pakistan.'

Cut to Leslie Lewis, composed and settled, trying to provide valid explanation for the criticism. In Chandigarh for a mini-concert, Leslie would ideally take things in his stride but when it comes to comparison between Coke Pakistan and Coke India, the musician pulls out facts - one after the other. "Coke Studio originally started in Brazil; then moved to Pakistan, where it ran successfully for four years, providing us with the best of Sufi music. Thereafter the concept came to India, so now you have an Indian version of Coke Studio," Leslie lists reasons for the difference and popularity of Coke Studio here. "Tomorrow if it moves to Indonesia then you wouldn't have Sufi music. In India we have diverse kinds of music, so our fusion is unique to us," shares the musician, known to be among the first ones to churn out remixes. "We have our own Wadali Brothers, Kailash Kher and Toshi who are rendering varied fusions."

We can't help drawing parallels with Pakistan Coke Studio. Fusion…where are we going with it? "There can be no benchmark for fusion. We are a big country, so we have a Punjabi singing with an Assamese; this is my idea of fusion, something that I dreamt of," adds Leslie, living every bit by his dreams. "I dream of music and this Coke Studio is what I dreamt of. I dream of the pairs who perform at the live jamming sessions. And I think we have done a great work." And when it is music in discussion, fusion, remix, modern instruments, the mention comes naturally. Remixes? "None was ready to take remixes when the trend started and now everyone is doing it. The videos have become vulgar and remixes have also changed," he shares, moving to how instruments have overshadowed music these days. "If a girl is not beautiful she would add embellishments; likewise for music, if it is not good then it is hidden behind instruments and if it is good, it is liked even without any paraphernalia."

The notes vary but we come back on the same track, Coke Studio, and Leslie definitely has more to offer. "This is a concept by Coca Cola and in India it has taken the shape that I dreamt of. The idea is simple and clear, to bring two different genres of music and blend them beautifully to create a third note. We want this third note to be liked by youngsters and elders alike. Music is for all, and it has no language," provides Leslie. Sure it doesn't, otherwise you wouldn't have a Coke Studio India!

Queen of jewels
Socialite-designer Queenie Dhody showcases her collection of jewels in Chandigarh
Mona
Queenie Dhody
STYLE Check: Queenie Dhody

On Friday, when Queenie Dhody walked in looking ultra-glam in a short dress by Monisha Jaisingh, like the one Paris Hilton sported on her famed Indian outing, all eyes moved from her brilliant jewels to her!

In Chandigarh, at Samsaara-Taj with Jewels by Queenie, the socialite-designer talks about her precious collection as much as about her much-hyped party. "Paris wore one with Swarovski," Queenie clears the air, pretty comfortable in her skin. Her latest collection, according to her USP, is a colourful statement—pieces in diamond, emeralds, rubies and pearls. "In keeping up with the festive and wedding season; the pieces are colourful," says the designer.

The range that starts from Rs 80,000 is sure to delight women for there are huge, chunky pieces; some thoroughly traditional, others ultra-chic. Precious, semi-precious, gold, silver and diamonds come together in this hand-made, fine jewellery.

If there are huge conventional kundan pieces with a dash of ruby and emerald, there are also semi-precious pink stone pieces studded with diamonds. Silver-gold neckpiece with rubies and uncut diamonds make a statement of their own. "I have always been into statement pieces but now they are hugely in," says Queenie, who recommends big things. In business for the love of jewellery, she is partial towards emeralds. Her favourite in this collection is a chunky ruby, emerald, pearls piece!

"When I design, I try to make certain that the jewel is noticed, loved as well as treasured; something that can be worn over the seasons," says Queenie. Interesting are her adaptable pieces - an emerald one that can be worn as a choker, string necklace or together as a statement piece. And her advice for the would-be brides, "Buy lot of jewellery but go for pieces that can be worn and are timeless." As for her she ensures that her jewels are trendy but with a timelessness about them!

Queenie, a regular to Chandigarh, misses the laid back City Beautiful that she used to visit as a kid. "Interestingly, as Chandigarh modernises, most modern cities are going traditional. Now one can see more of cycle-rickshaws in New York than Chandigarh," says the designer who aims to bring her Chandigarh clientele at par with Delhi and Mumbai!

Paris’ party

"It happened through her staff and our common friends," says Queenie, who met Paris for the first time at the party she threw in Mumbai. "It was to introduce Paris to my friends and have a fun night," says Queenie who found Paris 'charming'. In fact, Queenie's diamond earrings that Paris wore for the party are part of the collection at Samsaara-Taj.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
This garden rocks
When was the last time you visited the Rock Garden? Well, it offers a good change from routine life as well as a good workout...
Mona
Nek Chand
THE CREATOR: Nek Chand

So what if Chandigarh does not have many ancient monuments to boast of, we have the Rock Garden which remains one of the most visited tourist destinations in India (some say, second only after the Taj Mahal in Agra).

A dream kingdom with its flowing falls and brooks, natural rocks and fascinating figurines, the place is a pleasant contrast to our staid city. Tourists visit this place with fervour; have you been to this fantasy garden lately? Well, it offers a good change from routine life as well as a good workout (one needs to walk for two-three hours for a complete round)!

Open from nine in the morning to seven in the evening, Rock Garden is accessible for a small fee (entry ticket) of Rs 15 for adults (Rs five for kids). Bend over to enter the garden and get ready to walk in a world, which is an eclectic mix of natural and modern marvels.

Figurines made of natural stone, waste material (read broken china, light switches, glass bottles, bangles etc) dot the 30 acres of beautifully landscaped garden to give an impression of alleys, forts, jharokhas and palace gardens. A well, mud hut, village shop and small, little temples bring alive a rural scene. Don't be surprised if you see enthusiastic viewers throw in a coin and ask for their wishes to be granted!

The figurines from humans to animals portray varied expressions. Peacocks in peacock blue (and in reds and greens), children with naughty expressions - there are rows and columns of small statues. Sometimes white, others brick red, several multi-coloured; they give different hues to the garden.

What's fascinating is the use of rain water. Waterfalls and rivulets that run along the path make for a pleasant walk. One can also sit on the benches and take stock of the beauty around you.

Amazingly, the side walls (with mostly natural stone or waste materials) change colour and texture as one walks from one phase to another; narrow passages lead to unimagined vistas.

Though the garden is completely manmade, there is a lot of greenery. It's fascinating to see how the real trees and climbers mingle with made-up ones. There is a great deal of variety in the sights it offers. Where else would you find a Lord Shiva holding a trishul next to an Egyptian bust?

After negotiating the alleys, bends and turns, one lands up in the open, phase three. There is seating for those who want to rest and some refreshment for those looking for snacks to charge up.

More merriment is in store - tall swings, a camel ride for children, aquarium with colourful fish and laughing mirrors. A small souvenir shop sells key chains, typical figurines and postcards. And the bonus is one can meet the man who created this marvel. Nek Chand, despite his age, shows up at the garden in the morning and apart from a lunch break, he is there most time of the day and evening, entertaining visitors; supervising the work and upkeep of the garden!

Manish paints Paris wild
Manish Arora
SHOW MAN: Manish Arora

Iridescent silver body cladding in psychedelic swirled patterns, riotous shots of fluo pink and green — Manish Arora gave the Paris fashion crowd a rainbow-coloured shot in the arm on Thursday.

The designer, who next week unveils his first collection for Paco Rabanne as the house returns to the fashion fray after a five-year absence, said he wanted his own Spring-Summer look to be "crazy but believable." Rossy de Palma, Spanish actress, opened the show with a bang, strutting up to the cameras in a shiny metallic dress, cut well above the knee with high dominatrix collar and bare tattooed arms.

Arora, who is known for a highly ornamental style and eye-popping palette, said this time round he aimed for something a little quieter.

"I'm keeping the crazy but it's a lot more believable," he said.

His chief inspiration, he said, was the colour of skin, using sheer fabrics and the bodies of his models to reveal a human rainbow of blacks, browns and whites.

But the translucent, nude silks — whether leggings, skirts of sleeveless tops -- were anything but simple, overlaid with silver cladding or encrusted with thick layers of sequins or pins that rustled like sea shells as the models walked.

A foot-sweeping skirt with a metallic chainmail effect clinked and glittered green as if lit from within.

Fluo pink and green also popped up on ostrich feathers at sleeves and necklines, as well as on ankle-hugging spiky stiletto boots, which sometimes climbed to form one piece with a trouser leg.

One model stepped out wearing a black birdcage-like bustier, with tropical green birds perched on top it, over skin-tight bright green jeans.

Arora also drew on hippie culture, with Robert Altman shots of ecstatic music festival crowds, their hands in the air, reproduced on floor-sweeping skirts or A-line capes, either printed or hand-stitched from hundreds of pieces. — AFP

Sail into a new life
Now, you can dream about the most exotic wedding as Boutique Weddings, a luxury wedding service, is launched in Chandigarh
Vasudha Gupta

Imagine this. A well-lighted cruise liner, en route the Caribbean Sea. Stars dancing in the sky, an Italian waiter offering you khakras and theplas while you are all set to meet your groom and make a grand beginning. This is exactly what Boutique Weddings is all about.

Launching the concept of marriage in style, RS Rawal puts his head together to offer you the most dream-like weddings in Chandigarh.

"No matter how much you spend on a wedding, there is always something missing. We plan to bridge the gap and give you the best service," says Rawal. Pioneers of the elegant farmhouse-weddings in Chandigarh, the concept will look after all the pre and post wedding requirements. With 15-years of experience under his sleeve, Rawal is leaving no stone unturned to deliver the best.

Adding the dash of creativity to weddings Rawal says, "We have a tie-up with MSC, an Italian cruise liner and will be able to coordinate for weddings in the Middle-East, Caribbean and North America."

But pheras on a ship? "Yes, if the couple is keen on staying on the ship during the phera ceremony, we can arrange a giant candle or just drop the family on an island for the typical ceremony," he adds.

Rawal plans to source his material from the world over and makes sure that one particular concept is not replicated for another wedding. The flowers will come from Kolkata and Thailand if you are looking at exotic flowers and ready to empty out your pockets. "We will also procure decorative items and props from China," he says.

The basic idea is to take care of every aspect related to a wedding. From venue selection, to the stages, the mandap, the stalls and even coordinating for jewellery and outfits, Boutique Weddings will look after all your wedding needs. "I have a team of professionals, experts in different areas, who will first visit the sight, work with the creative director and offer a host of designs to select from," he says. And once you have decided on the expanse of the wedding, things will move forward to the planning, designing and organising. "We can offer luxury even on limited budgets," he says. The organization will not only do the old school, at home weddings or high end weddings on water, but will also coordinate farmhouses, villas, castles and boutique weddings as well. And of course, if there is something that you have day-dreamt about, just tell them, they will put it all together for your D-day.

It's action time for John
 John Abraham
Muscle power: John Abraham

John Abraham's Force is all excited about his action film Force. This is the first time he is doing a hardcore action film, where he has performed his own stunts. He adds that he would like to continue the trend of doing his own stunts.

Force-d to accept

Normally, I don't watch Tamil films, but Vipul asked me to watch Kaakha Kaakha as he wanted some young hero for the film. When I watched the film, I loved it. It's a film which stays with you for quite a long time. More than the action it was the romantic angle which struck me. It was so beautiful and from there I decided I will do Force.

Action-packed

I don't mind calling myself an action hero. I've worked hard to get this body. My director Nishikanth Kamat gave me eight months to prepare for this role. He wanted a tough man who can do all kind of stunts and hardcore action. After Dhoom, the audience expected me to do action films but I didn't do much. I feel there is a place and time for everything. I was offered many action films but they didn't have any action. Force, however, is a hardcore action film.

Tough guys

According to me there is only one action hero in Bollywood and that's Akshay Kumar. He is the only star who does all his stunts. I believe that there is no one like him in the industry. And in Hollywood it's Sylvester Stallone. I don't know how many times I have watched the Rocky series.

Chemistry with Genelia

She is like a kid. She has the kind of innocence about her which is very difficult to find these days. That maybe the reason why she gets roles of college-going girls. But in the film she plays a social worker who is very innocent but very clear of what she wants. She is a super co-star and we gelled really well.

Future plan

I have different kind of roles lined up for 2012. In the comedy genre, I have Desi Boyz and Housefull 2. Other than that I have Me Aur Main. Then, I get back into action with Race 2 and Shootout at Wadala.—HRM

SRK gets candid

Shah Rukh Khan is all geared up for his dream project Ra.One, which releases next month. Recently, at one of the promotional events for the film, the star shares his plan for social work. Here is what he has to say…

Controversies

When I was new in Bollywood, I would get upset when something bad was written about me. Then, I realised I am a star and people are interested in knowing what is happening in my life. Since then, such rumours stopped bothering me. Controversies and rumours don't bother me and my family now.

Comparison

It's very sad to compare some senior stars with newcomers. When I joined Bollywood, Aamir and Salman were my seniors. They had been working in films for about four years before I came. Aamir, Salman and I have shared some great moments together, which each of us will cherish. Everyone in the industry works hard, and it is great if their film is a hit. I recently watched Dabangg and loved it. Salman has his own style, as does Aamir. All three of us are different, and have our own audience and style.

Work pressure

I enjoy working under pressure, because I have seen that people give their best when under pressure. It encourages me to match up to the quality of others. Ra.One is made from my heart, and I hope that the audiences like it.

Social work

I am planning to do something for the women of our country. A woman plays an important part in our daily life. Without them, man's life would be hell.

Marriage whispers
Sajid Khan
Wedding bells? Sajid Khan

Sajid Khan is said to be dating Jacqueline Fernandes but he refuses to comment on that. He is more than happy to talk about his directorial ventures.

Getting married next year?

Yeah! Even I heard that rumour. But let me clarify that I am not getting married next year. I may get married in 2013 but not in 2012. And believe me I am a man who never hides anything. So whenever I am getting married I will invite all my media friends.

Are you dating Jacqueline Fernandes?

I would not comment on this question.

Is Housefull 2 happening?

When Housefull released many people told me they just loved the film and from there only the idea of a sequel to the film came to my mind. People loved watching Housefull. I believe people work hard all week long and in the end they wait for a nice comedy film where they can laugh their hearts out.

Housefull 2 is totally different from Housefull. Only Akshay Kumar and Ritesh are there from the first film. John, Asin, Jacqueline, and Zarine are all additional. It's again a multi-starrer comedy film and I am sure audiences will like it. I can't talk about the plot right now because the second schedule is yet to start.

Favourite movie genre?

I am a sci-fi fanatic. I loved watching Star Wars. I think I watched it when I was five years old. Apart from this my other sci-fi favourite films are The Abyss by James Cameron, Watchmen by Zack Snyder, The Matrix directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski and others.

Is India ready for such films?

I don't think Indian audiences are open to such films because the idea behind making a film is story-telling. But to make such films you need a high budget which is again very difficult to get in India. And a film with only special effects will never work in India.

Why do you go for only multi-starrers?

I love getting many people to work in my film as it gives everyone a character and I enjoy shooting with so many people. Today it's possible. Back in the 70's-80's there were mainly two actors but today you can easily make a multi-starrer film. So, all my films have been multi-starrer but my next film is a solo project with Ajay Devgn. And after that I will make yet another multi-starrer.

Ajay Devgn? We thought you will only work with Akshay!

Akshay and I are very close to each other and we have been friends since long. I think Akshay is a great actor and he pulls off any genre. Even Aamir and Salman are great in their places. I do my casting according to the script. It is not that I will work only with Akshay Kumar.

stress buster
Laugh away your worries
Renee Singh

We were all clutching our stomachs and literally laughing our guts out. Someone had just cracked a joke and my sane and sober self was almost falling off the chair in peals of laughter.

Laughter is honestly one of my favourite stress management strategies simply because it's attitudinal and it's free. In today's world when there is a price attached to everything it's a major relief to find something that does not come with a price tag.

A sense of humour is one of 24 main signature strengths one can possess and laughter perhaps is one of the most powerful tools of positive psychology. A research has shown that the health benefits of laughter are far ranging. It is seen that laughter reduces pain, brings happiness and increases immunity among all its other benefits.

No wonder we have so many laughter clubs springing up in city.

Benefits of laughter

Laughter reduces the levels of stress hormones like adrenalin and enhances healthy hormones like endorphins and neurotransmitters.

Laughter increases the number of anti body producing cells. All this leads to a healthy immune system and fewer physical effects of stress.

Physical release

A good laugh always cleanses the system. Have you noticed how light, energised and rejuvenated you feel after you're had a hearty laugh just. Laughter provides a good physical and emotional release.

Internal workout

A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and even works on the shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed. It is a great workout for the heart as well.

Great distraction

It takes away all the focus from anger, guilt and other negative emotions.

Changed perspective

Humour gives us a more light-hearted perspective to life and helps us view events as challenges making them less threatening and more positive.

Social benefits

A smiling face is such a joy to view. Sometimes, even when we are not really in a good mood and we see someone who's smiling, it just cheers us up.

Laughter is very infections so if you are laughing and others join in you are actually reducing their stress levels. It also helps create a new level of bonding on a socially interactive level "Laugh and the world laughs with you" has been a famous quote. Not only in spreading happiness and reducing stress, I feel that laughter creates a level of joy that is immeasurable.

So if you want to reduce stress through this great Laughter Therapy, follow these principles:

  • Start the day with a smile.
  • Take a step back in a sticky situation, try and see the humour in it.
  • Value extremes by recognising the humorous potential of your frustrating and annoying situation.
  • Have a funny buddy so that in times of stress you can connect and find happiness in sharing frustrations and laughing through them.
  • Watch funny shows to lighten up your heavy attitude.
  • Read books, a classic humour book can surely lighten up the heart.
  • Join a fun club, it's a fantastic place to enjoy a good laugh. Taking part in amusing activities together can really cheer you up.

Nothing comes as easy as a good laugh and remember the old saying "Laughter is the best medicine".

Fasting feasting!
Poonam Bindra

The nine days of annual religious fasting, the Navratras, are here, but through the ingenuity of various chefs these fasts have become veritable feasts that are relished by one and all.

Each restaurant vies with the other to offer the best Navratra thali and after scouting around, we felt that in Ludhiana Sagar Ratna, Maharaja Regency, was right among the best. Dished up in a special kitchen area after a daily puja  by chef Babu Kulal, the thali with it’s zeera aloo, puris of singhara aata, khichdi of samak rice, potato crispies and paneer curry is a delight for the palate.

To add crispness to the meal, we enjoyed sabudana papads and followed it up with the evergreen fruit cream as well as sabudana kheer. “We usually do not observe any religious ritual, but we make sure we enjoy this thali whenever this festival is there,” said Mandeep Singh, who had come here along with his family.

Then there were some visitors from the UK, Mexico and Philippines enjoying the special food and trying to understand the significance of it all!

Anjali, a local who was here with her family to celebrate her birthday, said, “My birthday falls during these days and we always come here to enjoy the thali together.” Informed Sridhar Shettigar, the manager, “These days it has become a fashion to have these thalis, which are reasonably priced, even for kitty parties.”

Pyaar ki wrong kahani?
Sukirti Kandpal
False alarm: Sukirti Kandpal

Sukirti Kandpal, aka Piya of Pyaar Kii Yeh Ek Kahaani is upset as a popular online magazine published a story claiming she is married and the man in question is none other than her ex-boyfriend. Sukirti is understandably livid and clears the issue.

What was your reaction when you read the story about your marriage?

Well, I was very surprised. Because I didn’t know that I was married! And some magazine wrote that I’m very happy with my hubby. I wonder who he is.

How did family and friends react?

My family doesn’t get affected by such news. But irresponsible statements of the media have got a lot of people who don’t know me thinking.

What is your version, the truth about the matter?

Firstly, I’m not married or engaged. We live in a modern era and 23 is not an age for marriage, according to me. I had given an interview about how my life is a fairytale and it has been tampered with.

Do you plan to take any action in this matter?

Yes, I have spoken to the magazine regarding an apology. Mavendra Singh is my ex- boyfriend and he is a dear friend of mine now. We have known each other since almost seven years and I don’t like things coming in between us. I think it’s plain irresponsibility.

Do you plan to marry in the near future?

Marriage is a very big thing. And I need to be sure that I’m going to be happy after I get married, so marriage will be a thoughtful decision for me.

What would your dream wedding be like?

My dream wedding would be in a white gown. The ideal destination would be Monaco. —HRM
