PU flouts norms, fields ‘ineligible’ players in tourney
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 30
The sports department of Panjab University has flouted norms by fielding ‘ineligible players’ in the recently held inter-college football tournament.
The matter came to the light during the final selection of inter-university football team, when it was found that three players Prabhdeep, Hardeeep and Jagjeet were declared unfit for the tournament.

Notably, the same players participated in the inter-college tournament while representing the campus and the authorities were oblivion of the fact that the players were ineligible to be part of the team. The team, however, secured the third place in the tournament.

Earlier, the players were enrolled in Punjabi stream at GGS Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, Ludhiana, but after they flunked, they sought admission to PU and changed their stream.

But as per rules, a player cannot play or represent the campus, if he or she changes stream after failing an exam.

However, the authorities washed their hands of the issue saying players should have informed them about the matter. But here the question arises whether the clerks cross-checked the players’ documents or not.

“The players kept us in dark, no doubt the clerks failed to cross-check their documents, but we cannot verify each and every degree of a player. We can only take action against such players,” said CS Grewal, director, sports, PU.

On the other hand, coach of the team Bhupinder Singh, who was appointed by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), said, “My duty is to train players. As far as the facts are concerned, office staff should verify those,” said Bhupinder, under whose guidance the same players represented Panjab University in the inter-university tournament held last year.

However, when asked whether the PU campus team would be disqualified for fielding players in the inter-college tournament, he replied, “If the participating teams in the tournament had protested against the campus team, we would have definitely taken action against the players, but now nothing can be done,” said Grewal.

Earlier, a player of Khalsa College, Mahilpur, was allowed to attend the ongoing inter-varsity camp even though he failed to impress the panel of selectors on the day of trials. The player was allowed to attend the camp after a special permission by head of the sports department, Panjab University, was given. But a member of the selection committee said the panel had dropped the player as he failed to perform well. “If he is given a chance, other deserving players should also be given a chance,” said the member.
