Patiala Peg
Director Mohan Sharma's first Punjabi venture Munde Patiale De promises to be a laugh riot Lights, camera, action…the film rolls and the heroine in bright yellow
duppata, with matching jhumkas, moves a few steps; the hero in a short waistcoat follows. Day: Monday Location: Sukhna Lake Time: 1 pm A dynamic, young crew is shooting for the Punjabi flick Munde Patiale De. Mohan Sharma, graduate from Government College of Art-10, is the director at the helm of affairs; the scene at Sukhna is vibrant. Extras for the dance sequence in their colourful dresses (as well as hair) dot the scene, makeshift kitchen doles out nimbu pani, tea, coffee as well as meals. Cameramen, technicians, choreographers as well actors are busy doing their jobs, while we sneak out with the director to know more about him. Mohan made a move to Mumbai in 1997. He started as assistant director with the likes of Asha Parekh (in serials) and movies. He has directed advertisements and documentaries (including the one for BBC on AIDS). In 2000, he came up with an offbeat film Avgat. Munde Patiale De is Mohan's first big outing. Story of three college friends Samar, Gill and Lucky, who meet up after a long time at Samar's wedding, and the funny situations that they land up in, makes for the plot. An out-and-out comedy, this movie has a rather young cast. The dynamic crew has ambitious plans to wrap up the shooting in a month's time and post production, aiming for a Baisakhi release. "The phase of bad films is over in Punjabi films. Good movies are being made and seen," says Mohan. "A wedding for a plot makes room for humorous situations and the movie is going to be an out-and-out comedy." Although from a non-film background, Mohan's family supported his Mumbai move and he is happy about it! "I believe Mumbai is a great place for anyone who is clear on what he or she wants to do," says the director. On with the shooting schedule, done the bits in Kumarhatti and Patiala, Mohan is in the tricity with his team and is happy with the progress. "I am making the film with all my heart, I hope it clicks with the audience; the rest I leave to the God almighty," says Mohan, who is eyeing another big Punjabi film as well as some Bollywood projects.

A ladies' man
Karan Chabbra, a Delhi-based businessman, bagged the title of Bindass Superstud on the show Superstud — The School of Flirt after defeating thirteen other contestants
Superstud — The School of Flirt, a show that aims to teach men the right techniques to approach a girl, with Asmit Patel as the Stud Guru, finally has a winner. For this reality show, thousands across India were auditioned, thirteen were selected and out of the final three, Karan Chabbra, a Delhi-based businessman bagged the title of Bindass Superstud. What was the experience like? "An amazing one; the concept of the show was mind-boggling. I guess the tag-line of the show proves it all. It was fun to learn the techniques through different tasks," says Karan. For Karan it was tough to outdo the contenders — Harshit and Siddhant — but he won with his charismatic appeal. So what is the real definition of a stud? "A stud is not the one who woos women by the clothes he wears or one who swears a lot, but he is definitely the one who knows how to carry himself and treat a woman gently," he says. During the course of the show which was shot at an exotic farmhouse at Chattarpur, Delhi, the boys had to surpass different levels and survive some of the wildest tasks such as asking for the name, number and age of a girl, bartending, massaging and winning a kiss from the lady, within a particular time period. The tasks were thrown at them not just by Stud Guru Ashmit Patel, but also various celebrities and gorgeous women who were a part of the show. Shares Karan, "Now I can woo any woman and it has been a huge confidence-booster. I am sure it will inspire a lot of youngsters." The grand prize is an all-paid trip for two to the Sin City, Las Vegas. sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com |
Eyes on the stars
Yuvraj Hans, son of famous singer Hans Raj Hans, shares how it's challenging to be a star kid
Star kids don't have it easy. There's a huge list of expectations that they must live up to. That's what Hans Raj Hans' son Yuvraj Hans has finally realised. "Star sons are equated with their fathers, comparisons are drawn and even a single wrong step gets scrutinized by the public," he says during a visit to Ludhiana, along with the star cast of Yaar Anmulle for the promotion of the film on Monday. "There's a kind of pressure on you. You have to prove yourself while letting others draw their comparisons." The comparison business may seem very legitimate to the observers, but for an artiste it's stressful. By and by, Yuvraj is learning to take it all in his stride. His journey has been fairly predictable. Since childhood, he was interested in being a singer. With a role model like his father, it was not an unusual choice. "My father is a versatile singer. He has done folk, pop, Sufi. And he has had a massive fan-following," he shares. It was a chance factor that made Yuvraj say 'yes' to his debut (Punjabi) film Yaar Anmulle. He got a call about this offer. Almost instantly, he decided that the film was good enough to mark his foray into acting. "It was destined. I'm a firm believer in destiny. We cannot escape it," he says. Hardwork helps, but eventually it's destiny that carves out your path. Between music and acting, if given a choice he would let music remain his priority. "I love music. I live for it," he says, with a touch of passion in his voice. He does not want to stick to any single genre when it comes to music. He knows versatility is an asset. And he's all for it. When music and acting business gets too hard, he unwinds himself — surprisingly — with music! "Music de-stresses you. It has a calming influence on you," he signs off. |

Fighting the hook
Jesse Grewal The hook is a shot which curves to the left (for right handed players). The reason for a hook is a club face which is closed to the path of the club. It is important to understand this as the club face may be square to the target line but if the path is in to out it is closed to the path of the club. Before we go into checking the path we first must check the grip. The first step in correcting the hook is to check the grip which is leading to a closed club face. Three reasons related to the grip which could lead to a club face being closed are - n A strong left hand grip: A neutral grip is when two knuckles of the left hand are visible or the 'V' formed by the thumb and the left hand is pointing to the right collar bone. If three or more knuckles are visible of the left hand or the 'V' is pointing at or outside the right shoulder it would be a strong grip (picture 1). This would also bring the club too much into the fingers which lose control of the club. The club should lie partly in the palm and partly in the fingers in the left hand. n A strong right hand grip: The 'V' of the right hand should also point either at the right collar bone or the right ear. The right hand fully covers the left thumb and the left thumb is not visible when viewed from the front (picture 2). The club is held at the base of the fingers in the right hand and not in the palm. In my experience, it is a common problem when people with long fingers use an interlock grip. While taking the interlock they try and get their fingers interlocked up to the webbing between their fingers which brings the club into the right palm instead of the fingers. The overlap grip is designed for longer fingers while the interlock is more suited to short and fat fingers. n A loose grip: If the grip pressure is too light we will tend to hook and if too tight we will tend to slice. The pressure should be firm in the left hand especially the last two fingers (the ring and little finger). If either the left or right hand is in a strong position the club face will be closed on the backswing. The first check point would be when the club is closed when parallel to the ground (picture 3). We could check this in a mirror. Fix your grip and you should get rid of the hook. Cheers to beer
If you can't go there, they bring it here. Based on this simple formula, Hops and Grains, Panchkula have launched Oktoberfest. Based on a 16-day beer festival held in Munich, Germany, the microbrewery has created the same ambience here and is even introducing a new beer during the festival.
"The concept started in Germany in 1810, where only the beer brewed within the city limits of Munich was allowed to be served," says Deb Dip Chatterjee, general manager of Hops and Grains. During the festival, a special beer, Bock Beer, has been introduced. With a 6.2 per cent alcohol, it is sure to add a bit of tang. "It is hopper, malty and stronger,” he says. Apart from the range of freshly brewed beers, the brewery is also offering a host of German dishes to ensure you don't go hungry. Brewmeister's chicken tops the list. "It is a special variety of chicken, which is marinated in beer to add to the flavour," he adds. Considering the festive season and the upcoming Navratras, we doubt if the beer fans will be willing to step up and take the bar by storm. "Chandigarh as a town is multicultural in its appeal. Not all cultures essentially adhere to the norms. Moreover, the fest only happens in October,”
Deb shares. The celebrations do not only end with food and beer, the microbrewery has made some interesting changes in the décor as well. To liven up the proceedings, the servers around have been made to adorn Bavarian hats. |

Face value
Facebook has now added the Spotify music streaming service to its roster that would allow users to access different music albums. When users connect Spotify to their Facebook account, their activity will be visible to their friends.
If enough people listen to the same album or playlist, then it will appear as a playable item in the Facebook newsfeed. A forthcoming feature will allow users to listen to the same song at the same time. Gustav Soderstrom, Spotify's chief product officer, said 'music is the next natural step for Facebook after photos'. "I think it's going to mean that things spread even faster than before. An artist that gets picked up is going to spread faster within a market and also between markets," Soderstrom said. "I think people are going to listen to more music," he added. Music industry analyst Mark Mulligan, however, warned that Spotify and the other music partners would need to be careful. "As they become more and more integrated in Facebook their brands will increasingly fade, subsumed into Facebook," Mulligan posted on his blog. — ANI

Ragini on a musical note
Television actress Ragini Khanna aka Suhana, who has made us laugh and cry through her acting skills in Star Plus' leading show Sasural Genda Phool, will be seen singing on television. She has been signed for Zee TV's upcoming singing reality show Star Ya Rockstar. We got Ragini to spill the beans about Star Ya Rockstar, her singing talent and more. Is it true that you have signed the new Zee TV singing show—Star Ya Rockstar? Yes, I am doing this show. Finally I have got a great singing show as singing is my first love. With this show, I am going to be a rockstar. I am really looking forward to this show. What do you think of reality shows on Indian television? I really don't think much of them. If the offer is good and exciting, I take part in the show. I feel nowadays reality shows give a lot of exposure which is great for all actors. I grab whatever I feel is interesting for me and I agreed to do this show because it is a singing competition for celebs, which is the main attraction for me. How did you develop a passion for singing? Right from childhood, I always wanted to be a singer. And following my passion, I learnt singing. I was more into pop singing and wanted to become a pop-star like Britney Spears. I am happy that finally I will be able to sing for the audience on the stage and showcase my talent. What have you learned from your mother, who is also a well-known singer? I have learned everything from my mother. For this competition, she has become my teacher and makes sure that I practice singing daily for one hour. Have you taken formal training in singing? Who is your guru? Yes, I have taken formal training from my mentor who sadly passed away last year. But with this show, I hope to make him proud and my mother Kaamini Khanna too. Who is your favourite Bollywood singer and why? I really admire Sonu Nigam a lot. He has given a lot of wonderful songs, has a great range and does a great mix of songs. Apart from singing, what are your passions? I think it has to be dancing and acting. I did some great dancing in Jhalak Dikhla Ja. I am an actress so I have been pursuing my passion in acting with my various shows from Radha Ki Betiyaan to Sasural Genda Phool.

The college girl
Actor Genelia D’Souza, who is known for playing the bubbly, vivacious college girl in most of her films, says she seems to own that spot in
Bollywood.
The 24-year-old actor, who has portrayed the role of a young energetic girl in films like Tujhe Meri Kasam and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, says she is offered such roles more than other actors. “I seem to own the spot of the college girl in
Bollywood. Down south I have been given strong issue based roles. But here I don’t get one,” said
Genelia. The actor, who will be next seen opposite John Abraham in Force, says she plays a mature girl in the film, though it looks similar to the roles she has done before. “Maya (her character) is extremely sweet, cute but she is also very mature. She is kind of a social activist. She knows what she is talking about. She has a clear thought process,” the actor said. A scene where Genelia had to tie the knot with her co-star John in the film, faced controversy after the priest who conducted the on-screen ceremony, claimed that he had read out the actual wedding mantra. But
Genelia, who has been fighting off the rumours of her marriage to good friend Ritesh
Deshmukh, says she is tired of clarifying her marital status. “I am a girl, I have a family and I also want to get married. I am bothered by rumours about me. It not only affects me but also my family. We actors have a life, we have a heart and we are lonely and they should get that straight before doing cheap publicity stunts. It is sad.” she said. The actor says she loved working with John as they share a similar background. “John and I are friends, so it was very comfortable working with him. I have previously shot commercials with him, so that helped while shooting. John and me have similar backgrounds. We both have catholic background, we both grew up in
Bandra, and we both faced similar struggles in our career,” she said. Genelia, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Ritesh Deshmukh in Tujhe Meri
Kasam, has been paired opposite the actor after a gap of seven years in Tere Naal Love Ho
Gaya. “One thing I noticed while shooting with Ritesh was that we have grown as actors and also as persons. We are different people now. We are much better professionals than what we were seven years back,” Genelia said. The actor has also made her presence felt down south with blockbuster films like —
Katha, Bommarillu, Santosh Subramaniam. Force is also a remake of Tamil hit film Kaakha Kaakha and she herself is all set to reprise her role in Bommarillu in its Hindi remake titled It’s My Life, opposite Harman

For Ranbir, kissing means real action
Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor has locked lips with his co-stars on screen and says that shooting kissing scenes is like doing an action sequence.
“I do love stories most of the time. Naturally kissing scenes do come up. I don’t say daalo (put in) kissing scenes. Moreover, it’s too awkward to kiss a girl in front of hundred people on the sets and in front of camera and lights,”
Ranbir, who had kissing scenes in Bachna Aae Haseeno, said on a television show recently. “It’s too mechanical. For me, a kissing scene is just like an action sequence. Normally, I finish off the kissing scene in a single take,” added the actor who locked lips with Priyanka Chopra in Anjaana
Anjaani. The actor, who is busy promoting his upcoming film Rockstar, however, got conscious when asked about his broken relationship with actor Deepika
Padukone. “I had a relationship with Deepika. She still continues to be my good friend. But the issue on which our relationship broke is a personal matter. It will be very unfair to the girl if I speak about that, because Deepika is single and may marry someone in future”, Ranbir said. Meanwhile, the two actors are set to romance on big screen again in Karan Johar’s new production Yeh Jawani Hai
