An actor evolves
Kabir Bedi, in Chandigarh, shares how he likes to do different things in different phases of life
Jasmine Singh

The mention of girls drooling over his sexy body, killer looks and naughty eyes still brings an impish smile on his face. "And why not," he says like a young boy with a new-found fan-following.

Blood rushes to his cheeks and eyes, adding an extra dash of red. "Why not," we question ourself! This is Kabir Bedi, the man known for slight flirtations and little flings. This is Kabir Bedi of Protima's Timepass, also known for his shyness and sensitive nature. And this is Kabir Bedi who defines himself as a constantly evolving human being. In Chandigarh to promote Yaara O Dildaara, a Punjabi film, Kabir Bedi adds another page to his involvement with Punjabi cinema.

"I have lot of faith in Harbhajan Mann, so when he approached me for Yaara O Dildaara, I couldn't say no. Like other roles, this flick too offered me a powerful role, which I enjoyed delivering," shares Kabir Bedi, who enjoys being a part of Punjabi cinema. For Kabir, who is known for national and international projects, Punjabi cinema is a powerful medium of entertainment . "If I get a good subject tomorrow, I would like to produce a Punjabi flick myself." We remind ourselves that this is a Punjabi movie, so what about those heavy-duty dialogues? "Working in a new language is not always easy. For Yaara O Dildaara, we wanted all the actors to have the same accent in Punjabi. The way I speak Punjabi was a little different, but it wasn't that big a deal," shares the actor who returns from Canada after doing a play.

The words, constantly evolving, remain with us, and we try to zero-in the areas. "I am an actor who has done all kinds of roles — a lead, a character role, a villain, just about everything. So, I don't know whether I have been ever slotted in any particular role," says Kabir, who mentions that his national and international projects are going on pretty well. "I believe in doing different things at different times; it gives a meaning to my life."

Giving another meaning to his life are his kids — Pooja and Adam. As expected, this father just lets them be. "I want them to lead a fruitful life, which has certain meaning to it. I advise them whenever it is required, but in the end it is up to them whether they want to take it or not," he says.

"I have done loads in life and there still seems a lot that needs to be taken care of. I am doing it simultaneously, but Yaara O Dildaara is my priority right now." Much into reading, Kabir has found time to lay his hands on Arvind Adiga's White Tiger. "Travelling, work and life, pretty much consuming for me," his eyes turn red. This 'boy' has probably found another fan!

On a serious note...
Theatre should be entertaining and enlightening at the same time, says actor Paresh Rawal
Mona

It's like stating the obvious —Paresh Rawal is an actor par excellence. But for some, obvious also needs to be reiterated — each time. In Chandigarh on Wednesday with his play Krishan V/S Kanhaiyaa, the man who has regaled the audience in various roles, shares excerpts from his life.

It's mainly films that got Paresh the recognition he enjoys today, but theatre is his lifeline. "Theatre is my DNA," he says. He effortlessly strikes a balance though. "One needs to have a passion for something, the rest follows," he says.

Theatre gives the liberty to work with like-minded people; has the liberty to experiment, which is not always possible in films. Even in films he has done divergent roles. "These are the two halves that complement each other. I have done Mohra, so that I could do Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The latter remains my most satisfying role," he shares.

When it comes to theatre, this laurel rests with Khel, which he has directed. "Naseer Ji jaise actor ko direct karna Ganga nahane ke barabar hai (it's remarkable to direct an actor like Naseeruddin Shah," says Paresh. The actor started with Gujrati theatre and is doing it again after 16 years with his upcoming Dear Brother. And, his message for those who want to make it big in life is simple and crucial - "Mehnat, sirf mehnat aur jyada mehnat (hardwork, only hardwork and more hardwork). You will see him next in Zilla Ghaziabad and Maalamal Weekly 2.

Comic timings

The man who has tickled the funny bone in many flicks, including Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, Maalamal Weekly, Golmaal and Bhagam Bhag, appears to be rather sombre. "What you see on screen is my act that has taken years of hardwork on stage," the actor clarifies. Do we see him in Hera Pheri sequel next? "Only if the script is challenging enough." Well, we hope!

Turning Point

Love and relationships is the theme of Punjabi movie Yaara O Dildaara, starring Harbhajan Mann, Jonita Doda and Gulzar Chahal. For Harbhajan Mann, this is a turning point in Punjabi cinema. "It a fresh cast and each one has put in an effort to bring a change through this movie. The film is a family entertainer that revolves around love and relationships. This is a story that will reinstate your faith in true love. Punjabi cinema is experimenting with new themes and this is a step towards it." As for our girl from Chandigarh, Jonita Doda, who has already carved a niche for herself in South Indian movies, Punjabi cinema is like a homecoming. "The movie has a talented cast and it is has done justice to the theme of love and relationships. I am glad to be a part of this project that has been a great learning experience." — Jasmine Singh

Blaspheming Bollywood
Comedian Russel Peter feels Indian film industry is all garbage

He is working in Bollywood star Akshay Kumar's production Speedy Singhs but Indo-Canadian stand-up comedian Russell Peters says he finds the Mumbai-based film industry awful.

Speedy Singhs is the dubbed version of Akshay's international production Breakaway with a backdrop of ice-hockey.

Peters, 40, who was born in Canada to Anglo-Indian parents and has been doing stand-up comedy since the age of 19, says he hates Bollywood films and has never seen one in his life and does not plan to star in one.

"I hate Bollywood. The movies are all garbage, just terrible. It's my opinion, obviously there are billions who like and love them. I don't like all the singing, dancing and all the dramatic crying. I have never seen a Bollywood film in my life. I have refused doing it earlier and will do so in future. But I hope some filmmakers take a chance of making real movies," Peters said.

The comedian does not have very kind views about Bollywood actors too, who he thinks are "just pretty faces".

"I don't think Indian actors are good, a couple of them are like Anupam (Kher) but not many are there like him in the industry. There are thousand of actors and actresses in the industry but you can count on hand how many of them are really good, rest of them are just pretty faces." Peters is known for his mocking Indians in his stand-up shows and has acted in Hollywood films before like Lord Have Mercy and Comedy Now. This is the first time he has worked in an Indian production with an India star cast.

The film also stars Anupam Kher, Vinay Virmani, Hollywood actress Camilla Belle and Gurpreet Guggi. The film releases this week. — PTI

No pregnant pause

Pains, aches and discomfort are not part of a normal pregnancy. Having a baby is a normal physiological phenomenon and nothing should stop you from enjoying it.

Most women experience symptoms like backache, muscle stiffness, mainly in legs, arm pain, urinary incontinence and headaches. As many as 25 per cent pregnant women are confined to bed rest.

Here are the general techniques which are highly beneficial:

One cause for headaches is hormonal but many, along with arm pain occur due to excessive fluid in the body and maintaining right circulation is the key. One should maintain a light to moderate level of activity throughout the day and shift into comfortable positions while sleeping. Light stretches also do the trick.

Backache is a pregnant lady’s nightmare. The increasing weight on the abdomen stretches the back muscles which gives a killer backache. Regular walks, timely breaks, comfortable positions and right footwear help a lot. Bending the legs while sitting or lying also relaxes the sore muscles at the back.

Pain at the hamstrings i.e. at the back of the legs is due to flattening of the foot. This can increase laxity in the muscle, fluid retention and increasing weight. Light stretches, warm rubs and foot elevation may give relief.

Urinary incontinence is common in pregnant and elderly ladies. A set of exercises called ‘kejel Exercises’ are prescribed. These can be carried on while doing your regular activities and recreation too.

Some ladies feel that weight training is a no-no during these nine months. In fact, a light weight training can be performed efficiently. Also, some ladies have been participating in light jogs too!

Swimming and other water exercises are a big hit. They give you adequate exercise, relaxation and a good outlet. Precautions should be taken against infections.

Take care

The clothing should be loose and airy for there should be no obstruction in circulation.

Maintain proper hydration by sipping fluids regularly.

Sudden jerks should be avoided as hormonal changes make the joints lax.

Caution against slips and falls is of great importance too.

Exercising in pregnancy helps not only to remain fit and happy, but also for an easy labour and delivery and easy weight loss after childbirth.

Other exercises like regular walks, squatting exercises and various relaxation techniques etc along with a good post partum regime can do wonders to make you a super mom.  (As told to Poonam Bindra)

How ads seduce you

Ever wondered how that enticing, full page ad in the magazine made you buy a huge flat screen TV against your better judgement?

Ads brainwash you in two ways. There is just the factual type, called ‘logical persuasion,’ or LP (this car gets 20 km to a litre). Then there is the ad that bypasses conscious awareness, called ‘non-rational influence’ or NI (a pretty, semi-nude women, draped over a car).

Now, researchers at the Universities of California -Los Angeles and George Washington have shown that ads evoke different levels of brain activity, based on LP or NI influence, reports the Journal of Neuroscience, Psychology and Economics.

Ian Cook, professor of psychiatry at California University, and colleagues found that brain regions involved in decision-making were more active when people viewed ads that used LP than when they viewed ads with NI, according to a California statement.

Simply put, ads structured on logical persuasion were acceptable only after they made sense to an individual, after he or she subjected them to a thorough analysis. But the ads based on non-rational influence appealed to a more emotional side of the potential target, by tempering or dazzling them into buying it.

“The findings support the conjecture that some advertisers wish to seduce, rather than persuade, consumers to buy their products,” concluded Cook, according to a California statement.

The study was based on a group of healthy adults, both men and women, who viewed 24 ads in magazines and dailies, as the electrical activity in their brains was recorded. IANS

Sleep well, stay fit

Researchers have carried out the study of 62 teenagers and found that sleeping for between seven-and-a-half and eight -and-a-half hours a night kept insulin and blood sugar at the optimum level. Spending less or more time in bed increased the chance of raised glucose levels, while a lower amount of deep sleep caused insulin levels to drop, according to research published in the ‘Diabetes Care’ journal.

The teenagers in the study were monitored over one and a half days, during which their blood sugar levels were tested and their sleep patterns were analysed by the researchers.

The findings mean that a healthy sleeping pattern could help to ward off the onset of diabetes in the patients, all of whom were obese, researchers from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said. Dr Dorit Koren, who led the study, said it backed up previous research which showed that adults who were deprived of sleep had a higher risk of type two diabetes. —PTI

Spielberg to release Lincoln after 2012 election as he does not want it to be political fodder

Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg

Director Steven Spielberg is planning to release his biopic on Abraham Lincoln after the 2012 presidential election to keep it out of the political discourse. The director says he decided to postpone the release to avoid it from being a "political fodder", the Hollywood Reporter said.

"The movie will be purposely coming out after next year's election. I didn't want it to become political fodder," Spielberg told the Orlando Sentinel. Lincoln, which sees Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president of the US and Sally Field as his wife, Mary Todd, is based on Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin and adapted by Tony Kushner. The film follows Lincoln's journey to abolish slavery and end the Civil War.

Tommy Lee Jones will play Thaddeus Stevens, a Republican leader and congressman from Pennsylvania. Stevens was a staunch supporter of abolishing slavery and was critical to writing the legislation that funded the American Civil War.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Robert Todd Lincoln, eldest son of Lincoln and the only one to live past his teenage years. — PTI

Star power

Some of the major releases this year, whether they are thrillers or comedies, are riding on an ensemble cast of actors

Too many cooks...

Players: Abbas-Mustan's thriller stars Bipasha Basu, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Omi Vaidya, Aftab Shivdasani, Sikander Kher, and others. Bipasha and Sonam are there to strut their stuff in fitted blouses, mini-skirts and boots like Bipasha and Katrina did in Race. Sikander Kher only got the movie because he is Abhishek Bachchan's best buddy. Abhishek is doing the movie because the Dhoom franchise did well and he is good at playing cop-like characters in thrillers. Neil Nitin Mukesh's character is the villain and we know that he is really good at being bad (remember Johnny Gaddaar?), Bobby is among Abbas-Mustaan's favourite actors (Humraaz, Naqaab), and Omi Vaidya must be there for comic relief. He seems incongruous, though.

Couple of newcomers

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl: The cast is headed by Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh. Dipannita Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Aditi Sharma are the newcomers in the movie. Anushka is gorgeous to look at, has a great body, and acting skills to boot. Ranveer Singh is utterly charismatic and plays a conman. The new girls have distinct characters and are also eye-candy.

The cast of Love, Breakups, Zindagi
Together we can: The cast of Love, Breakups, Zindagi

Rocking stars

Rockstar: Of course, Ranbir Kapoor plays the titular role in Imtiaz Ali's film and we are sure this is the finest performance of his career. Petite, pretty, and feisty Aditi Rao Hydari (Yeh Saali Zindagi) plays a journalist and the other woman (besides Heer) in rockstar Jordan's life. Nargis plays Heer, a sought-after Kashmiri girl who breaks up with Jordan and breaks his heart. The love story is mainly between Heer and Jordan. How can we forget to mention late legend Shammi Kapoor's cameo? He and Ranbir have a jugalbandi scene together.

Veterans' day

Love Break Ups Zindagi: The romantic comedy has an ensemble cast. Shabana Azmi, Farida Jalal, and Boman Irani are the veterans who make special appearances. Dia Mirza is pretty and a decent actor and she is paired with the fairly charming and flamboyant Zayed Khan. Tisca Chopra scores high on the acting quotient and she is paired with goofy Cyrus Sahukar. Good-looking and charming newcomer Vaibhav Talwar is paired with another newcomer, Pallavi Sharda. Umang Jain and Auritra Ghosh are among the debutantes in the film.

Eclectic mix

The Dirty Picture: Vidya is talented and sultry. She is a voluptuous South-Indian herself so who better than her to play Silk Smitha. Tusshar Kapoor looks dumb and ugly and his character is also similar. Naseeruddin Shah plays a South-Indian actor and it looks like the gifted actor will add another feather to his cap. Emraan Hashmi has evolved tremendously as an actor and he is very good at playing rebellious and mysterious roles. In TDP, he plays a director and apparently, he is the only guy (at least among the three of them) who hates Silk. The movie looks very interesting.

So far, so good

Hum Tum Aur Shabana: The film's poster highlights Minissha Lamba's pretty face and she is a sprightly performer with an endearing screen presence. The film's heroes: Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor are not charismatic and we have had enough of their comedy dose in the Golmaal series. Model Pia Trivedi makes her debut in this film and it looks like she will up the glam quotient.

Comedy of errors

Prateik and Kalki Koechlin in My Friend PintoMy Friend Pinto: Prateik plays the titular role of Michael Pinto. Prateik is unassuming and in-his-own-world and his character, Michael also believes that everybody is guileless and simple, just like he is. The reality, as he will discover, is far from that. He is paired with the whimsical and talented doll-like Kalki who has a flair for comedy. Arjun Mathur (Luck By Chance, I Am, and My Name is Khan) makes a comeback of sorts in this film. Divya Dutta is a talented actor and her character looks feisty. Raj Zutshi, Shruti Seth, and Makrand Deshpande are able performers and have supporting roles in the comedy of errors. — HRM

 Imran Khan
Making waves: Imran Khan

 Spotlight on Imran

Imran Khan's Delhi Belly was a huge success and he has followed it up with another hit with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Naturally, he is very happy. He talks about the films and his upcoming films and co-stars.

Life after Mere Brother Ki Dulhan

You know when Delhi Belly released I was feeling very awkward to sit with my relatives but I sat with the same crowd this time and felt at ease. Because they all loved the film and said it's a totally entertaining film. They loved DB also but I felt awkward. I am happy that everyone, especially audiences, are liking MBKD.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

EMAET is a coming of age, slice-of-life film. It's a story about a guy who has everything but still misses something in his life and it's only after the girl enters his life, he sees the other side of life and feels the fresh air. He falls in love with her.

Dharma Productions…

I have worked with them in I Hate Luv Stories and working with them in EMAET. Karan is like family to me and he takes care of his stars like his own family. He is the perfect producer anyone can dream of. He is always caring and loving.

On Kareena Kapoor

You know, I am a big fan of Kareena Kapoor so when I came to know that we are paired in the film I was quite shocked. I wondered how I would act as I have always admired her acting. When I met her on the first day of shooting, she was like a friend and totally chilled out. So there was no ice to break as on the very first day we became quite comfortable. She is an actor whom you can look up to. She oozes magic on screen, the moment cameras start rolling. She is a thorough professional; she gives her best and is totally focused on her work. And off-screen we bonded really well.

Good friends of all co-stars?

(Laughs) I can't help if I get along with all my co-stars. I believe to get the chemistry on-screen, you should have a chemistry off-screen too. With some of my co-stars it took time and with others it happened easily.

One at a time

For now I only have Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu because officially I haven't signed anything yet. I have a couple of projects in hand. It will be better if the production houses make the announcement instead of me.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu stars Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor and is directed by newcomer Shakun Batra and will release on 10 February, 2012. The film had the working title Short Term Shaadi and is said to be a remake of Hollywood film What Happens in Vegas but producer KJO has rubbished the rumours. —HRM

Show saver

Buzz is that though Krishnaben Khakhrawala was to be replaced by Rajan Shahi's Kuch To Log Kahenge from October 3, the channel might just move it to an earlier time slot and save the show. Though the last date of the telecast is touted to be September 29, rumours are that Sony is trying to work out things.

Off the track

Turns out that working long hours on television can be tough for everyone- even in case of hot item girl like Rakhi Sawant. After shooting non-stop for 12 hours, she suffered physical and mental exhaustion and had to be hospitalised.

Hamari Saas Leela had not delivered the expected TRPs and the channel kept changing the genre of the show from comedy to drama to horror but to no avail. Watch Hamari Saas Leela at a new time slot.

Get well soon: Kavita Kaushik

Dengue strikes Kavita

Last week, FIR star Kavita Kaushik felt uneasiness and fever and was rushed to the hospital. It turned out that she had dengue. The unit members were worried for her when they realised she had high temperature but are glad about her getting proper treatment. Kavita is recuperating and will soon resume shooting.

All is well: Roshni Chopra

Balancing act

Smart, sweet, chirpy and fashionable Roshni Chopra is seen hosting two shows on telly currently. She claims she loves hosting shows which requires intellect and a glam quotient. Being married, she juggles work and home well.

How is the experience of hosting Star Plus' Jee Le Yeh Pal?

Jee Le Yeh Pal has been fun. We shot in Udaipur for the road reality show and it was like an adventure. The cast and crew were fantastic and the television celebs were friendly too. We all got along well. Though it was TV shoot, it was also like a road trip for me as we would go from one location to the other, stay in the same hotels, eat together, discover the places together.

What do you enjoy the most about hosting Comedy Circus? How do you feel when the contestants tease you?

I enjoy every moment of hosting Comedy Circus and let me tell you there is never a dull moment. The show and the contestants always keep me on my toes. We laugh and have fun while shooting. As for teasing me, well, I guess you tease the person you love. So, I think I am the much loved person on the sets which is why the contestants don't mind making fun of me. I have a funny bone so I don't mind the humour either. If they go overboard, I always point it out on the spot.

What do you think is your sex appeal?

I think that is for others to decide but I feel as a television host one not only needs a glamour factor but brains as well. A host has to feel the show and fit the profile for things to work.

Who is your fashion icon?

I don't have a fashion icon but I do love the retro classics worn by Audrey Hepburn, Princess Diana. I like being comfortable and these women don't shy away from expressing themselves. They are not afraid of being a woman all the way which is what I love.

After doing films, will you work in TV as an actress? Have you got any future acting assignments?

I recently debuted with Phirr for which I received appreciation and a few film projects are in the pipeline but I wouldn't want to name any now. Let them materialise. As for working on TV, I have always said that the medium isn't important, the role and the project are important for me. So, if I get a meaty role in a television show, I wouldn't mind doing it. But for now, I am enjoying hosting shows.

How do you juggle marriage and work? What is a priority for you?

Nothing is tough if you really want to do it. For me, both my marriage and my work are priorities. I am lucky and thankful to God that I don't have to choose one over the other. My husband supports me totally in everything I do. Moreover, I love being at home post work. I am enthusiastic about all roles in my life be it wife, actress or host.

Do you feel post-marriage actresses or working women have additional responsibilities vis-a-vis married working men?

Yes, sure. I guess women always have more responsibilities than men. So, it is not a shock for me to know that they are expected to juggle work and marriage. But I guess women are more capable too. —HRM
Ankita
tired of tears: Ankita

Not a cry babe

Ankita Lokhande aka Archana of Zee's Pavitra Rishta is having a hard time on the sets. No she isn't bothered by any co-star but with all the crying she needs to do. As Archana's son Soham has been kidnapped, Archana has to cry non-stop during the scenes as a distressed mother but Ankita who has to act these scenes hates crying. "I don't like to cry as I don't like glycerine at all. It gets painful to keep using it as it hurts the eyes, eventually," she says.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is September 22...

You have another fortunate year ahead. Do all that you can to cash in on the lucky breaks coming your way. Distant affairs can be made more profitable with the co-operation of close associates. The financial propositions will be profitable and could lead to increase in earnings.

Being born on this date, you are capable of handling large scale undertakings, assuming great responsibility, and working long and hard towards their completion. You work for the greater good with a good deal of inner strength and charisma. You are very aware and intuitive. You are subject to a good deal of tension.

Using your imagination and developing your creativity seems almost essential to you now. You find escape from the mundane through art, poetry, reading and writing. The more you allow your thoughts to wander, the easier it will be to solve everyday problems. There is no need to conform to old habits when new routines can be beneficial. Think out of the box and you will create a better future for yourself. Too much aggression will be negative. Those born after 1970s could be irritated by some unresolved matter. Avoid arguments.

Students may get admissions in universities abroad. Colleagues and associates will be helpful and the self-employed will expand their enterprise profitably. You must prepare for the best and expect the worst. One irritation after another may take a toll on your patience. The behaviour of certain family members may rob your focus and humour. Easy inflow of money makes the year comfortable in business. However, those of you awaiting news of promotion or an important posting may have to be patient. Those who are pursuing loan from bank will get their loan sanctioned. It's all too easy to sit on the sidelines and criticise relationships now. If you're stuck in a loop from the past, push through it and live in the present. Problems can be fixed when you start focusing on finding solutions.
