firing incident
Panchkula, September 21 It was on Saturday evening that Bhalla, a resident of Sector 4, got a ransom call of Rs 10 lakh allegedly from Kuldeep, alias Manga, a gangster lodged at the Ambala Jail. When Bhalla refused to accede to his demand, a bullet was shot at his car parked at his residence within minutes of the ransom call. The worries of the police, however, mounted after the call was traced to Ambala only, as was claimed by the caller. The call was made from inside or around the Ambala Jail, said sources. The police is in the process of investigating that how Manga, lodged in the jail for the murder of a notorious gangster, Bobby, can make a call from inside the jail, even as jammers were installed in the jail to block mobile phone signals. Making calls from Haryana jails by gangsters, however, is not a new thing. While Nishan Singh and Bobby had been running their business of extortion from Ambala Jail, three warders had been suspended for their alleged tempering of jammers in Sonepat Jail in 2007. |

Irfan Pathan all set for comeback to team India
Chandigarh, September 21 Irfan, who is in the city for playing the JP Atray Memorial Tournament for Reliance team, seems to be in a good form, as he scored a ton in his first match and also took wickets after making a come back from back injury. “I have full faith that I will get selected in the team for the upcoming series in October. I am putting all the hard work to sharpen my bowling and batting skills, but I am concentrating more on bowling, as it is my forte,” said Pathan. On being asked about playing at the domestic-level cricket, the cricketer feels that it is important to play and perform well at this level, as it boosts the confidence and helps to regain the lost form. He also added that for a bowler pace is not everything. “I am looking forward to give my best in the domestic cricket after coming back from the injury. Earlier, I never paid much attention to this level of game and now with sustained hard work, I will give quality performances and will overcome my weaknesses. I will also meet former cricketer Kapil Dev for some tips,” said Pathan. When asked about the poor performance of the Indian cricket team in the recently held series, the player said the team was going through a bad phase. “I hope the team will recuperate its loss in the upcoming tournaments.” Adding further about the performance of the bowlers, he said, “I cannot comment on performance of others, I can only ensure about my best performance whenever I will get a chance,” said Pathan. |
Over the hill, raw are in
Chandigarh, September 21 Issue of overage, inexperienced referees and favouritism will rule the roost at the tournament, as the referee’s panel appointed by the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) has raised many eyebrows, as a few referees are ineligible to supervise matches due to their respective ages, in concern with the rules of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF). As per the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) under which AIFF functions, a referee should not be more than 42 years of age and should have good eyesight. Notably, some referees, who are included in the panel, are above 45 years of age, while a few are recruited recently, but they will officiate all matches as sources (in organisers) claimed “favouritism” the reason for it. Controllers of this national-level tournament did not feel the need to call referees from other states with the help of AIFF in order to avoid any objections during the tournament and notably, the match commissioner, who is responsible for checking all facts and details, has appointed these officials. Interestingly, the competition is not an invitational tournament, as the teams participating are recommended by the state associations and travelling concession vouchers are also given by the AIFF. “This is not a new thing, these referees will supervise all matches in one way or another, but a referee should be fit and tough, both mentally and physically, to supervise a game. But the scenario is different here. This is not a local level or school-level tournament, top teams are participating in the tournament, which requires proper supervision. No doubt, you get good officials here, but they should also fulfill the framed criteria,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
A total of eight referees are appointed for organising 44 matches, including semifinals and final. As per fixtures, four to five matches will be played everyday at two venues and four referees are required to supervise one match, which will make a tiring schedule for these officials and it might affect the play. Interestingly, the head referee appointed for the tournament is a retired official of an organisation |
