Making of a rock star
It's about Leaving Home. About their first song, first performance, first album. It's the story of their life, struggle and success, entry and exit of members, music and melody. Leaving Home, the documentary on the life of band members of Indian Ocean like a kaleidoscope shows different facets of their life.
It is among the few works that mirrors the life of rock stars. Then there are enough reel references to get a clue about their lifestyle. Rock On was pretty close, London Dreams was hardly musical, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa solved some purpose, but it's Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar that is expected to draw the portrait of the rockstar most aptly. There are ample examples from Hollywood as well. City based rockbands pick their choice of the iconic film that they can relate to. Kunal Malhotra of I Quit votes for the Hollywood flick, The Rocker released in 2008, based on the life of a drummer. "The movie broke several stereotypes. The drummer was the protagonist unlike a dozen other movies on the same subject, in which the role naturally belongs to the lead singer." He adds that the lead was shown as a 40-year-old and not a college going student. "Talk of a rock star and the image of a young, chirpy, high school student conjures up. The rocker challenged it all." His next choice is Rock Star, again a Hollywood production made way back in 2001. The movie is about a tribute band. The reasons for the pick are, "It has a fresh storyline. From being a member of a tribute band of Steel Dragon, a celebrated band to becoming the member of the very band, the storyline was very inspiring." He adds that the lead pair of Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston sizzled on screen. Back in Bollywood, the bands do not have much choice but the movie they say is closest to the lifestyle of rock singers is Rock On. "I could instantly connect to it. Four members dismantle the band because they had to opt for a mainstream profession!" shares Vidhur Pratap Bansal of Area 231. He adds that his story is not going to be very different, "Although we are not breaking apart but getting a respectable job and handsome salary is mandatory. Band as of now might take a backseat." He likes the characterisation in Rock On. There are family issues, ego clashes, career concerns, "I bet that a lot is common between the story of Rock On and members of college and school bands. The film was insightful." But all said and done, there remains a difference between reel and real experiences. Films will have enough twists and turns to make it a money churner. The reason Ramit Mehra of The Local Train band can't relate to any flick. "The work that defines the lifestyle of rock bands in the best possible way is Leaving Home, the national award winning documentary on the life Indian Ocean." He adds that the documentary projected the life of its members minus any subjective approach. "In India, if you want to make music a full fledged career, then be ready to face objections from family, friends and society. Be ready with justifications as to how would you be able to support your family. The documentary throws light on all the practical aspects of the life of rock band members." As for another favourite one in the list is That Thing You do, a film written and directed by Tom Hanks. It is based on the sudden rise and fall of a rock band of 1960's. "It was entertaining and at the same time successfully gave an insight into the life of rock band members," says Arun Sharma of A Long Battle rockband. Only the release of Ranbir Kapoor starrer Rockstar will tell if they will change their choices. ashima@tribunemail.com

Truth and dare
The success lies not in the fact that he scaled nearly 100 skyscrapers worldwide, (think Petronas Towers, Canary Wharf, Taipei 101). Nor in the fact that he did it all with bare hands, but that he made a switch from battling vertigo to being labeled as the 'Real Life Spiderman.' Alain Robert, the French urban climber had been narrating it all time and again, so it was time he put it together. "Writing a book came naturally. I started to get used to being interviewed often and since I had enough material about my life, I wanted to share it all with readers," he speaks of his book, With Bare Hands, his real life story.
The book follows Robert's achievements from climbing cliffs in the gorges of southeastern France as a child to travelling the world looking for new skyscrapers. And he never let anything come in? "I was not going to let vertigo problem stop me. I decided to be responsible for my destiny and not let a bunch of doctors decide for me." It all started at the age of eight. "I saw a movie inspired by a novel from Henri Trooyat. The movie was about an airplane which crashed on a mountain. I was amazed, inspired and realised I wanted to become a climber. But I was scared of heights and low on confidence." After a couple of height nightmares, finally, he climbed a seven story building. "That's where I was living with my parents. I did it after I was locked out of the house as I had left my keys inside. I decided it was now or never." The rest, as they say is history. He's been doing it ever since and though, " My parents did object but I didn't really listen. I wanted to become a climber. It was my dream and I was going to make it." The title, With Bare Hands refers to his practice of climbing without the use of any safety equipment. While scripting the success story, he's battled countless injuries that left him officially 60 per cent disabled. Err…does he count a career in high risk urban ascents a good example for kids? He shares, "We are living in a world of media. There are tonnes of bad examples in our daily life. Climbing isn't that bad. I have been awarded by different prime ministers, have been all around the world giving speeches to one and all. If climbing free solo was that bad, I guess I would know." Meanwhile, he's busy and in the real sense of the word. "I have plenty of future plans. Immediate next is Moscow, in another two weeks time in London, next month in Romania, November in Malaysia, then Paris, Abu Dhabi, Dubai all on spectacular buildings." A 3D movie is currently being worked upon too based on his life story. For him sky is the limit.

A thought for theatre
"I may not be a star but a star maker for sure," says Rani Balbir, a theatre veteran from Chandigarh who has trained the likes of Anupam Kher, Poonam Dhillon and Mita Vashisht. She shared notes on her ambitious play Bhagwad Ajjuke - Bhikshu aur Ganika' as well as ongoing Tagore Theatre that the play is part of.
A seventh century farce by Bodhyan is translated in Hindi by Nemichandra Jain. "It's a spectacular production with rich live classical music, chants and rituals that celebrates the heritage of classical Indian drama," shares Rani. All the actors in the play are from Chandigarh. Out and out comic, this play at the same time raises pertinent questions. One of them being that religion is not a means to earn bread and butter. Rani is happy that this theatre festival introduces tickets but at the same time feels that tickets should be priced less, while advocating student concessions as well. "An average theater student is usually on one's own without much support from family. They deserve some consideration," says Rani, who is next working on a solo performance Kasturba scripted by her picking up pieces from Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography and Girish Karnad's Agni Aur Barkha.

Fragrance
fever
Wonder when someone passes by what runs through your mind? Is it the personality? Clothes he or she is wearing? Or maybe, the perfume that person is wearing? Certainly, a perfume is the most noticeable thing.
Perfumes exude sophistication, mystery and power of its scent goes beyond a distilled portion in a bottle, it is signature of the wearer! When it comes to the men smelling good, we ask the Super Stud Guru, Ashmit Patel on how essential is it? "It is very important to smell good but not unlike women, who smell sweet like flowers, for men a little bit of fragrance is good which should be subtle enough." He adds, "I have collected many perfumes over the years and some of my favourites are Eternity by CK, Dunhill, JPG. People should know that body odour mixed with perfume is a deadly combination so one should take a frequent shower for a good aroma." The aromatic fragrance gives a confidence boost to many and a sense of carrying themselves well too. Shares Sahil Juneja, managing director, Upper Crust, Sector -35, "If a way to a man's heart is through his stomach, a way to a woman's heart is through the fragrance the man is wearing. I have a collection of perfumes which includes Hugo Boss, Dunhill, Parkes and Daniel Hill Desire" Some dare to leave a nice lasting impression on the fairer sex. Shares Vidur Varma, "The perfumes you wear leave a very decent and lasting impression on the people you meet specially those belonging to the opposite sex. The body odour is such a turn off so one should wear good branded perfumes." He adds, "My collection includes Burberry Brit, Gucci Sport by Gucci, Chanel Allure, Love and Luck by Ed hardy, Hugo Boss and varieties of CK perfumes and I would continue to expand my collection." He adds, "I wear perfumes according to the occasions. What I fear for meetings, going clubbing or just going out with friends is different." Those decorative perfume bottles which can adorn your dressing table are also a major reason behind this collection obsession for some. Smiles Naman Kansal, a Chandigarh-based housewife, "I have a huge collection of some amazing perfumes like Gucci, Pleasure from Estée Lauder, Paris Hilton, Incanto by Salvatore Ferragamo and Game by Davidoff and love collecting them." She adds, "Everyone wants to smell good and with that fresh aroma of some perfumes makes you feel so lively; some branded perfumes have nice bottles and packing that you want to buy them for their show and their very appearance." So, keep spreading the fragrance around. sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

Phone, not a friend
Are you addicted to your phone while driving? Well, it could be due to an anxiety disorder, says a new study. Researchers at the University of Arkansas have suggested that people who engage in the risky practice of using their cell phones while behind the wheel, may be suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder rather than addiction.
The findings have significant policy implications because most legislation prohibiting mobile phone usage while driving - which generally has failed - has relied on research that links dangerous and excessive usage to addictive traits. "Despite evidence that addiction might drive some excessive and dangerous mobile phone usage, that model explains only part of the phenomenon," said Moez Limayem, professor and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the Sam M. Walton College of Business. "Our study shows that another potential driver of such behaviours may relate more closely to obsessive-compulsive disorders than addictions. This is important because behavioural interventions to treat OCD and addictions differ fundamentally and the possibility that mobile phone usage is a compulsion rather than an addiction may suggest more effective legislative interventions and prevention tactics," he stated. Limayem and a doctoral student, Zach Steelman, came to the conclusion after they collected data from 451 men and women of various age groups and locations through an online survey website. "Evidence of compulsive behaviour brings to light the notion that the underlying motivation to use a mobile phone is not pleasure, as predicted by addictions studies, but rather a response to heightened stress and anxiety," Limayem added.

Stress buster
Wow! What a figure, all eyes turned towards her as she walked through the restaurant to catch up with her friends. "Mind and Body in balance darling," my psychotherapist's voice quickly chirped in.
"Gosh! why can't I loose some weight." This seems to be a standard statement with most people. Once we have reached a certain age and stage in life the everyday stresses seem to just take over and maintaining the ideal weight seems to be a losing battle. Weight is the constant topic of discussion amongst every age group whether they are teenagers, youngsters, middle aged or seniors. This is one issue that is common to every generation and discussed with great fervour at every social gathering. In fact I think dieticians seem to be favourite people these days and quickly acquire a celebrity status, if they are good at helping us drop a few kilos here and there. Our lifestyle today with its pressures and hassles doesn't spare us the food we eat, now whether we eat for pleasure or for health reasons we have to monitor our food habits constantly. To promote good health and reduce stress related risk factors a positive approach and self-discipline is required to introduce constant changes in lifestyle wherever and whenever necessary. Exercise, Relaxation and Diet are Fundamental to this. Nurture and nutrition together give a well nourished lifestyle. Of course we have lots of information on foods which help cure stress but there is no 'wonder food' to eliminate it completely. Just a balanced diet that provides sufficient energy to maintain the right body weight and supply the body with the right macro and micro nutrients is enough. HEALTHY DIET Regular and frequent meals Consume small quantities of food at frequent intervals instead of the typical breakfast, lunch and dinner routine. As they say breakfast like a king and then have a light early dinner as there is little activity after that. Avoid crash diets and fad diets They send stress signals to your mind constantly you might land up with a great figure but very poor health. Eat Fiber rich food Eat food adequate in complex carbohydrates. Choose these in cereals, fruits and vegetables rather than simple carbohydrates present in sugar, colas honey etc. Eat whole grain cereals, sprouts and pulses. Soluble fibers present in beans, peas, lentils, oats, apples, oranges and carrots. They help in lowering cholesterol levels. Insoluble fibers present in whole grains vegetable and wheat bran help hold water in the color and prevent constipation. Fiber rich foods are low in calories, take longer to chew and keep you full for a long time. Avoid food rich in fat and cholesterol content Minimal fat is beneficial. Non -vegetarian food is good in moderation. Such foods compound the effect of stress. Reduce salt sugar and spice. Taste should be introduced with alternative seasonings like lime juice tamarind, mint, coriander, black pepper etc. Maintain an ideal weight Every gram of excess weight is an extra burden on the heart and other vital organs. l Chew thoroughly l Eat slowly l Take small helpings l Eat the right food l Keep physically active Avoid a monotonous diet Don't eat the same foods all the time, remember variety is the spice of life and stress accumulates with boredom. Keeping your mind healthy and stress free entails keeping your body fit. So do not think it's all about looking good, the "feel good" factor is far more vital to our health and only we can "make it happen". Moderation and variety in everything we eat is the Key to Success. A healthy body is much better geared to handle stress. Listen to your body, it always tells you what you want. Eat healthy and keep your mind and body in sync which in turn will make you look gorgeous. (Singh is a Chandigarh based psychotherapist)

Star track
Kajal Aggarwal who debuted alongside Ajay Devgn in Rohit Shetty's Singham is not interested in giving up her southern actor tag. The actor says, "I will never be disrespectful to the Telugu and Tamil film industry. I have been brought up to respect my roots. I owe my acting career to them."
The Mumbai-based actor reportedly stirred up a controversy down South when she said she doesn't consider herself to be a South Indian actor, as she is Punjabi by birth.
Following these reports, angered Tamil and Telugu producers issued statements saying they will ban the actor from working in south Indian films. Reacting to the alleged ban, the actor says, "I'm really hurt and angry that someone has started this whole 'ban' issue without bothering to speak to me." She goes on to say, "I was shooting for a Telugu film Dhada with Nagarjuna's son Chaitanya in Germany when these rumours started. I have not heard from any association wanting to ban me because I guess everyone in a position of power knows the truth." Kajal asserts that she will not give up south films even if she gets more Hindi film offers. The actor, who has worked for four years and acted in over 21 films, says, "I plan to continue with my South films along with Hindi projects. There is no question of choosing one over the other. I am working with the best talent there. Why would I give it all up?" The actor reveals that director Rohit Shetty spotted her in Telugu film Magadheera and offered her Singham. She says, "Language wasn't a problem. But I was reserved in the initial days. Rohit and Ajay's pranks made me loosen up."
A trip to Pondicherry
Kunal Kapoor who was away for two weeks has just returned from a short trip on the outskirts of Pondicherry. While the world heads to Auroville to search for peace and quiet, news is that our handsome hunk ended up there to work with a theatre group whose work he has admired for a long time.
When quizzed about the same, the Don 2 actor excitedly quipped, "I have wanted to work with them for a while. Fortunately the opportunity came up, so I packed my bags and headed to Pondicherry as soon as I could." Ask him if a play is in the offing, he says "I'd love to do theatre, but it requires a certain commitment in terms of time, which I can't give right now.
But hopefully in sometime soon." Adishakti is a theatre company that uses traditional knowledge of theatre, music and movement in their performances. Apparently Kunal was so impressed by their performances that he headed down south to work with them.

Bikini babe
After much speculation and hullabaloo over Kangana Ranaut donning a bikini in her upcoming movie Rascals, the news has finally been confirmed!
The actor who was in the news for her initial reluctance to the bikini finally gave into director David Dhawan's request. The petite actor has shot in a bikini for a particular sequence in the movie, which is seen in the initial promos. Apparently the actor had refused to be shot in a bikini clad avatar as she was apprehensive about her weight and did not want to don a bikini until she was completely confident of her look in the scenes. However, she finally did go for it and the result, we say is mighty impressive with the actor looking sizzling in her white bikini and cool classy aviators. Produced by Sanjay Dutt Productions and Rupali Aum Entertainment, Rascals is a rib-tickling comedy starring Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn who play two cool competing conmen who try to outwit each other to win the heart of the surprisingly elusive Kangana. The movie is slated for a Dusshera release on October 6. — HRM

Enter, the item boys!
Here's something you thought you would never see Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn doing. News is that the actors will be seen in a completely new avatar for their upcoming movie Rascals also starring Kangna Ranaut, Arjun Rampal and Lisa Haydon.
The hot and sexy dance number Shake It Saiyan shot with Sanju baba and Lisa Haydon has been in the news for a long time and is being touted as the next big chartbuster. This time around Ajay will be seen doing some classy and stylish moves with the smoking hot Lisa. A part of the video also showcases the two superstars looking very macho and super-cool sitting on two different sports bikes placed on a revolving platform complete with pyro-techniques et al. Denial mode
Pop star Britney Spears was spotted wearing a huge bling on her engagement finger. Although the 29-year-old singer has denied the rumours of her engagement with boyfriend Jason Trawick, she was seen wearing a big rock while waving to her fans in London.
Trawick was also seen shopping for a ring at Hollywood's Pascal Mouawad jewellers few days back, reported a publication online.
"There is no truth to that report with regards to engagement rings. However, Jason was there to discuss other matters with Pascal, but nothing relating to him personally," the representative said. — PTI

Nandish Sandhu aka Veer from Uttaran, has just returned from a fun-filled holiday in Canada and can't stop raving about the place. We get Nandish to speak about Canada and his other favourite holiday destinations.
Canada Rashmi and I have just returned from Canada and what I like most about the place is that it has low population, so one can enjoy a peaceful holiday. I loved the greenery, the fields, the trees, everything is so beautiful. The Niagara Falls is the main attraction of Canada and the place is so vibrant with so many activities to try out. I had a good time at the haunted houses, casinos and eating joints. Dubai I had been to Dubai three years ago for professional reasons. I was left amazed by how fast Dubai is developing. I remember seeing buildings coming up within just three or four days. Although, I did not get to spend much time in Dubai the development and the beauty of the city has made it one of my favourites. Goa Goa is the perfect place to relax, chill and party. Just find an isolated beach and have fun. My most memorable trip was with college friends, where we chose to live in a shack on a beach instead of an expensive hotel. We used to stay awake till 5.00 am and have campfires and other fun activities. So, I miss the fun that we used to have during college days. Rajasthan I love the culture and heritage of Rajasthan. It has some beautiful places to visit. The deserts and sand-dunes are just mind blowing. The sports that are available in the deserts are fantastic. I did some sightseeing in Udaipur and the beautiful lakes caught my attention. Thailand I am a total water person and I love Thailand purely for its beaches. I have tried water sports like scubadiving, water skiing. There is no match for Bangkok when it comes to shopping. Even getting a tattoo done is really cheap. I haven't got any tattoos but if I ever want to I will do it in Bangkok. — HRM

Small screen, big chances
Back with a bang, Asiya Kazi is on prime time with a new show Imagine's Dharampatni. Once again in a Gujarati setup, Asiya explains her reasons for accepting the show, talks about Harshad, Balaji and her success. Read on.
Imagine's Dharampatni is a show based in a Gujarati household. Was it easier to take on another show in the same milieu post Bandini? I wouldn't say it was easier or tougher because of the Gujarati setup but I took up Dharampatni for the story and character. They were both appealing and interesting. Sure, I now find a Gujarati setup comfortable post Bandini, which has a Gujarati set up too. During Bandini, I began understanding Gujarati language and customs of Gujaratis. I feel that I was destined to get a role like Dharampatni and I am enjoying playing Kastur. How different is Kastur from Santo? And what similarities does Asiya have with them? You can't compare Kastur with Santo as both are totally different characters. Kastur has different values and traits while Santo who was a village girl had other characteristics. As for similarities with me, when every actor works on a role, we all put in some bit of ourselves into each role. Kastur loves to talk a lot and is a bubbly girl and I love that about her. You have a younger look in Dharampatni. Are you enjoying it? I always enjoy all looks I have had in my characters. Be it Santo's young look to her mature look or Saudamini's over the top look or Kastur's sweet and simple look. I try to play all the roles offered to me to the best of my ability. Looks are important for the audiences to connect with your character but acting is equally important. What do you like and what irritates you most about your co-star Harshad Chopra, the actor and Harshad, the person? We have become good friends over a period of time. In fact not just him, I am friends with the entire unit and we all ensure to mingle during work and breaks, eat food together, joke, and have fun while working on the sets. As an actor, Harshad and I have found a comfort level and therefore we can tell each other how to better a scene, or if we forget something or any thing related to acting without feeling bad. And as friends, we chit chat as we have found a comfort zone with each other. The rapport we share is good. As for what I find irritating about him, I have to tell you that there is nothing irritating about him! You went from Imagine to Colors to Imagine again. Does working on different channels make a difference? Well frankly I don't know. I am an actor and I look at the role offered to me, the production house and other things along with the channel. I don't think of the channel first, so I can't honestly say if it makes a difference. I guess if people like your work, they will tune in irrespective of the channel. When I did Santo, I was a newcomer, yet I got the love and support of my audiences who loved the show Bandini. Then they appreciated my work as Soudamini in Maati Ki Banoo on Colors and now ditto is happening for Kastur. If people like what they see, they will watch your show. And I am glad Dharampatni has got a good response. Harshad and you both are Balaji protégées. Do you feel in today's times it helps or harms to stay loyal to a company? Again I don't think like that. I had a great time working with Balaji and now I love my Dharampatni unit. Every production house has been a good experience for me. I focus on my role in the serial more than anything else. Who do you credit the success to? I credit all my success to my unit and the production houses I have worked with. It hasn't been a one person job so I wouldn't want to credit even myself totally for my success. During Bandini, I had Ronit da who guided me a lot during scenes, my directors, producers and in Dharampatni too, we have talented artistes and directors. I learn a lot everyday. What do you do in your free time? I love listening to music or talking. Craziest thing you ever did… I love playing pranks and during Bandini we had a whole gang of people who would prey on other members in the unit. What is your relationship status? I am single and I wouldn't want to talk much about my personal life.

The year ahead
If your birthday is September 19...
Nineteenth of any month will be always important in your life as number one gives greater will power and self-confidence, and very often a rather original approach; but with this, a somewhat self-centered approach to life that may be in conflict with some of the other influences in your life. The 19/1 is a loner number and you may experience feelings of being alone even if you are married. You will be in the best of spirits and achieve even better results due to your enthusiasm. Stick to the tasks you've been given and don't be hot-headed as this will irritate a superior who could say something you don't deserve. Don't irritate your loved one by repeating the same things; try to be more accommodating. If in police or sensitive job, you may fall into the trap so be vigilant. Placing too much priority on holding on to what you have or increasing your possessions diverts you from what is most meaningful. You should try to find happiness through your relationships. You'll become aware of the skills and talents of those who work. Try not to focus too much on individual attitudes. As an employee, you'll enjoy your job and will win over co-workers who have recently ignored you. You will need to be patient, because the best will be saved for the last. You might also discover that big things come in small packages. Elder members may require 'extra considerations' for some reason. In-laws and parents require time, patience and even more money. Money will come in from recently concluded deals. Old friends appear most helpful. Things will soon start looking up, emotionally, professionally and financially, but in the meantime try to exercise a little moderation. You could feel a little wistful, thinking about romance from the past or dreaming about love that has yet to come. That's fine if you don't want to play, but if you're interested in making a heart connection now, come down from your cloud and open up more emotionally to those who are here. Plan Friday, Saturday and for home pleasures. Mood: Emotional and rather 'over burdened'. Compatible signs: Scorpio, Capricorn. Lucky colours: Sky blue, Stone grey. Lucky days: Tuesday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 4, 9, 12, 29, 40. Lucky Flower: Lotus. Lucky gem: Ruby (Manikya)
