Rains lash Mansa, Bathinda dists
Mansa/Bathinda, September 15 Heavy rains were witnessed this morning at Mansa and continued intermittently till late in the evening. Showers hit the Bathinda district in the afternoon and continued till the evening. Residents of Mansa said they witnessed such a heavy rainfall after a long time. It started all of sudden at 7 am and many low-lying areas got inundated within an hour. People were surprised to see flood-like situation even near the elevated houses, shops and roads in the city. Many students of private and government schools were told to return to their homes by the teachers without taking exams as water entered the premises of schools. Condition of the Civil Hospital, railway station and government offices was no better. A recently-constructed under-bridge, which is an important link between two sides of the city, is also lying unused for the past many days due to water-logging. Rainwater had not yet drained out or dried up in the low-lying areas where mosquitoes and other insects have started breeding and the showers lashed the region once again. The worst-affected areas were Bir Nagar Mohalla, Arorvansh Mohalla, Bus Stand, Court Road, Jawaharke Road, Chugli Ghar, Hospital Road, Railway Station, Old Vegetable Market and Bhatta Basti. Rains also hit Budhlada and Bareta areas where water entered in many houses. People were seen cursing the authorities while struggling to drain out the accumulated water. Residents said that water entered their houses due to poor sewerage system and lack of proactive approach on the part of the district administration and the Punjab Government. “While water is yet to be drained out, more rains have wreaked havoc as now people enter in heated arguments and fight with each other over draining out the accumulating rainwater,” said Tarsem Singh of Chhoti Mansa. Mansa Deputy Commissioner Ravinder Singh could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. Chief Agriculture Officer Jarnail Singh, when contacted, said he had no idea about the rainfall recorded today. “After assessing the damage, we will release the figures of the damage caused to various crops tomorrow,” he said. |

Kotli Sabo mourns death of its blue-eyed boy
Bathinda, September 15 The deceased Varinder Singh (18), a student of Class XII in the DAV College, was returning from the college when the overloaded mini-bus he was travelling in overturned following a tyre burst. While villagers protest against the bus owner and the district administration for allowing overloaded buses with worn out tyres to ply, the police said no action had been initiated for want of a formal complaint. Investigating officer in the case ASI Darshan Singh at Sangat police station said though many people received serious injuries in the accident and a young boy got killed, the police cannot initiate any action. “We do not have any formal complaint, as the family members have considered the incident as ‘rabb da bhana’ (god’s verdict),” the officer said. “Varinder was a blue-eyed boy of the villagers as he was charming and brilliant. He was the only child of his parents. Being tall, he had to bend while standing in a bus and always preferred to get a seat,” said Sukhmandar Singh, Sarpanch of Kotli Sabo village. He failed to get a seat on that day and the bus conductor shouted at him to move ahead as one of the rear tyres of the bus was punctured, Sukhmandar added. “While a tyre was already punctured others were worn out and the mishap was bound to take place,” the Sarpanch said. Meanwhile, Harman Sidhu, president of the Arrive Safe, a Chandigarh-based NGO educating people on road safety in Punjab and other states, said there was no requirement of a formal complaint to get a case registered in this regard. Stringent action must be initiated for putting lives of passengers to risk by driving a vehicle with worn-out and punctured tyre, he said. District Transport Officer (DTO) Bhupinder Singh said action needs to be initiated by the police even if there was no formal complaint. “Though we keep on issuing challans to transporters for plying damaged and overloaded buses, it needs to be stepped up to curb the menace,” he said. |
