Love is in the air
Jasmine Singh

An Air force station can pretty much be an unusual place for a movie promotion, but the name Mausam justifies everything. So, bang on time (Celebrity actors reaching on time is a rarity), the star cast of the movie Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor make an appearance at the air force station at an organised press interaction (Well organised are yet another rare phenomenon) on Sunday evening. No time lost, it was straight 'lets get to the point about the movie.'

The obvious volley was received in nice spirit by the otherwise shy actor Shahid. Controversy — regarding a nod from the air force- this had to be it. "The movie Mausam has been shot keeping all considerations in mind. We have tried to keep the script and the treatment as genuine as possible. There is a slight issue with a 30 second shot that would be taken care of," shares Shahid ready for more darts. Working with father Pankaj Kapoor, the director of the movie and also working as a spot boy on the sets, the mention brings a smile on Shahid's face. "I had to literally run after my father to get him to write the script of Mausam. He took his time and only after he was convinced about the subject, and whom he would cast as an actor, did he write the script. My father took nearly two years to say yes to the project," he says. And what was working as a part time spot boy on the sets. Smiles, "It was like going back to the acting school and doing everything. On sets I am an actor, at the same time I am working with my father. So, I do whatever is expected of me as a son." Oops, there you go.

In all this conversation, did we forget to drop in an important name? It would be crime, or lets say a fashion crime not miss out on this one. All this while, a petite, traditionally dressed in white churidaar actor looks on. Sonam Kapoor, the fashion icon held on the glass she was served juice in! Quiet like she holds on to her chirpiness. The radar is shifted, reasons for working in Mausam. "It is a love story and I guess everybody in my generation needs some dream. Besides, Mausam has love has the bottomline, which is change from otherwise corruption and terror that we face everyday," provides Sonam. Hey, how can we not ask her about the plain and simple look she carries in the movie? No make up could be horrifying for any actor. "It wasn't. I carried the no make up in Delhi 6, so I didn't have any problem in Mausam. Besides, I would take just 10 minutes to get ready for the shoot. By the way Shahid takes much long to get ready," she adds with a puckish grin, shifting the radar on Shahid, the actor who sports a neat look for the movie.

Each ribbon on an Air Warriors chest narrates a story, an Air Force officer at the conference had mentioned. Mausam too one in the seasons of love.

Style statement

"I like being both an actor and getting dressed stylishly. I would soon be working with my sister Rhea again on a film project. In fact, the girls in Delhi and Chandigarh pretty much liked the movie Aisha. I am excited about my upcoming movie Players, action thriller directed by Abbas Mustan, starring Bipasha Basu, Bobby Deol and Abhishek Bachchan.

The only reason that I am in business is because of original, beautiful song so I don't mess with it. I just add a few beats here and there, stay away from too much of masala or rap and it's ready," he shares.

Suketu has been all over - hosting happening parties, being part of competitions, collaborating with musicians world over. His recent has been remixed tracks for the soon-to-release movie Aazan in which he has worked with music director duo Salim-Sulaiman. He's looking forward to collaborate with famous DJ Ashley Wallbridge next.

Suketu stands by the remixes, whatever the world says, "They are an excellent way to connect youth to old melodies. I myself wouldn't have known so many wonderful songs had I not been remixing," says Suketu who loves to listen to original tracks in his spare time.

Having established in the world of remixes, Suketu is ready to change his track now. "It's the original scores that I am keen on doing. Bollywood is big today and it's here that I want to make use of my potential," he shares.

There was very less of Hindi music. But, thanks to remixes and music directors churning out music for the younger generation, it's mainly Bollywood and Punjabi music that rules at parties now," he shares.

Suketu is happy playing in Chandigarh after long, "I have played here before, but, it's been a long time. I like the energetic, enthusiastic party people here," he shares. "I am not hesitant introducing new numbers because people are open to it. A little announcement about the new track and party-goers are ready to groove," says Suketu.

Britney's spiritual training

Pop star Britney Spears sees exercise as a spiritual thing because it helps refresh her mind as well as body. The 29-year-old singer tries to keep to a strict workout regime in order to be in peak condition for performing on her tours and feels it goes beyond simply working out. "Exercise is a spiritual thing, it helps your mind and your body and it's all connected. So, yes, I think it's really important to take care of yourself in that way. I work out every other day, and sometimes every day. I run a lot on the treadmills in hotels when I'm on tour and I do light weights and a little bit of cardio," Spears said.

However, the Toxic singer loves eating junk food and doesn't compromise on that.

"She does not think about the calories in the food, just that she likes it. She loves greasy food and creamy sweets and hates fruit and vegetables," a source said. — PTI

Happy genes

Scientists believe they have identified the happy gene that makes us look on the bright side of life. The researchers have found evidence that part of our DNA makes us either naturally positive or negative. The Essex University study looked at DNA samples of 100 volunteers and tested their responses to highly emotive images, using revolutionary computer therapy.

Scientists then measured how the volunteers' genes transported the mood chemical serotonin around the body. People with short versions of the gene had stronger reactions, both positive and negative. But those volunteers with the long gene type expressed less reaction.

Elaine Fox, who led the study, said: "Those with the long version often fare best in fairly benign conditions. But they might not gain so much from a good experience."

"When times are really bad or really good, those with the highly reactive short genotype either go under or really benefit," she added. — IANS

classy moves: Shyam Mishra with Sharda Mishra

"Gharana literally means a particular musical or dancing tradition belonging to a family for a specific period of time having influences over its three successive generations. However, now a days the artists keep their art enriched imbibing the best from other gharanas, which rightly applies in my case." opines Shyam Kartik Mishra, a Kathak classical dancer from Dehradun. Coming from a family of kathak exponents, having allegiance to Benaras

gharana, he graduated from Dehradun and learnt dance from his father Pandit Prabhu Shanker. Presently he is following Guru Rajendra Gangani of Jaipur gharana. "In fact every gharana creates its own aura and symbolises its salient features evolved by the gurus and performers," says Shyam Mishra, UP Sangeet natak akademi awardee in Chandigarh for a performance at Randhawa auditorium on the invitation of Pracheen Kala Kendra.

He is here with seven of his family members, all accomplished dancers or musician including cousin Sharda Mishra, his co dancer for jugalbandi. Says Shyam Mishra " As you know the dominant character of Indian classical music and dance is purely improvisation and you will agree that every artist is both a creator, composer and performer. So, close relationships help in developing instant understanding of dance moves".

Recalling his series of solo and jugalbandi performances in Europe especially Switzerland and France Shyam Mishra extols the receptive audience who watch any performance with rapt attention. Commenting on dance reality shows on television, he expresses gratitude to the learned judges who advise contestants to learn basics of dance, which means work for us and more disciples at my Nrityanjli dance school.

stress buster
Keep time
Renee singh

'I wish I could just chill, but where's the time? How many of us are constantly envying our friends who seem to be having a good time despite their busy lives while we whine. We may be doing less than them and, yet, we are constantly busy.

This is only because we have not learnt how to manage our time well.

Time Management skills are simple practical techniques that have helped people in business sport and public services reach the pinnacle in their careers. Even ordinary people have changed their lives.

Time Management Skills make you highly effective by showing you how to identify and focus on activities that give you the greatest returns.

Beating Work Overload is the KEY to Stress Management.

Work smart not hard

I always used to admire my Math's Teacher who seemed to be happy all the time while I spent hours agonising over everything. Swimming in the evening and playing tennis regularly were her forte, while we struggled with our theorems. I discovered Effective Time Management was her strategy.

'Time is really the only capital a human being has and the only thing he can't afford to waste. - Thomas Edison

How well do you manage your time? Most people feel overload and work late to meet their deadlines. Some go from one crisis to another and this is terribly stressful and demoralising.

If we manage our time we are exceptionally productive at work and our stress levels drop. We can devote time to interesting high reward projects that can enhance are careers and make us happier.

Strategies for effective time management

Make a To Do list

Prioritise the tasks on your list and get rid of the nagging feeling that you have forgotten something.

Set a personal goal

This will give you a destination and vision to work. Do you know where you would like to be in six months or ten years from now. If not set a goal immediately.

Prioritise

Make an urgent/important matrix to create a distinction between what is urgent and what is important.

An Action Important Matrix helps you to know if a task is high yield OR low value. Fill in the work.

Manage distractions

Whether they come from phone calls, emails, chats on the Internet or clients, they prevent us from achieving the flow. So just try to minimise distractions and learn to manage interruptions.

Procrastination

Learn strategies to beat this habit. Find a useful action plan. Try and make small portions of your large work, so that you feel like doing small chunks at a time.

Don't take on too much

Learn to say no to people. Try not to be a micromanager and trying to do all tasks yourself because you can't trust anyone. Let go.

Take a break

A short walk, a cup of coffee, a small chat is refreshing.

Avoid multitasking

Sometimes this can get stressful.

Rectify mistakes

Don't think 'I know it all.' We are humans and prone to faltering just recognise and improve.

Managing time makes us stress free and happy.

Playing safe: John Abraham

John Abraham says that he never said no to experiments when it came to picking roles: an alcoholic lawyer in Jism, a thief in Dhoom, a journalist in Kabul Express, a photographer in Dostana, a singer in Saat Khoon Maaf. But now the phase is over.

"I am not dependent on any films. I try to experiment with roles, like I did in Kabul Express, Jhootha Hee Sahi and others. Force is my first commercial masala movie, hope it does well. It is a very interesting film," said John.

"People used to tell me to do commercial films but I like experimenting and so I continued with it. All new directors come to me as they know I will take up risks. I know experiments are more prone to failure at times. Force is not an experiment. With Force, the experimentation phase is over." Force is a remake of the Tamil film Khaka Khaka.

"Force will be an entertaining film. It has every element, be it comedy, action, romance, drama. I feel comedy is the safest bet. These days action films are doing well. I hope my film does a decent business. I hope the film gets appreciated," said John.

About the co-star Genelia, he said, "She is a chirpy and bubbly person. This is the first film where she would look sensuous and beautiful." Force is set to release on September 30. After Force, John would be seen in a comic flick with Akshay Kumar in Desi Boyz and Housefull 2, and in Race 2 with Saif. Also in the pipeline are Shootout at Wadala and I, Me Aur Main. On his relationship status, John said, "I would like to say that I am single. I am not married...I am happy." John was in a relationship with actor Bipasha Basu. — PTI

Taking baby steps

Slow & steady: Amrita Prakash

Not many would remember the actor Amrita Prakash who has done small roles in big banner films like Karan Johar's We Are Family, Rajshri's Vivaah and Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi. But now this pretty girl-next-door is set to debut as a lead actor under a new banner.

Amrita would star in writer-director Pammi Somal's upcoming film Na Jaane Kabse.

"I am blessed to have worked with good people and I hope to continue with it. Post Vivaah I had few offers of supporting roles but I was not keen on that. I wanted to do lead roles," Amrita said.

"It was quite a risk for me...as it was a new banner, new director. But I had faith in the script. She (Pammi) has delivered a good film. I had no second thoughts on that. I am open to working with anyone, be it a big banner or a small banner."

Amrita made her acting debut on silver screen with Anubhav Sinha's Tum Bin where she played the role of a sister to the lead actor; in Vivaah, she played Amrita Rao's younger sister.

"I am excited about doing a full-fledged role in Na Jaane Kabse," Amrita said. "When I went for narration I liked it. It is easy-go romantic-comedy. I could completely relate to the character, Anjali. It is a sort of like Kareena's character in Jab We Met. The movie is slated to release in September-October.

Ask her about how comfortable she is wearing skimpy outfits and delivering intimate scenes, Amrita says, "I am not very comfortable. I will stick to my boundaries. I want to do films that people can watch with family." Besides Na Jaane.., Amrita is busy with a thriller movie. "I am working on a thriller. It is a serious mature role. I am excited about it. There is a new director making it. It should release early next year," she said. — PTI

Of small screen and big breaks

Tube-top: Juhi Chawla

Whether it's Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Raveena Tandon or Madhuri Dixit, many of Bollywood's top actors have made their presence felt on the small screen and the medium gives them a career choice after films, says Juhi Chawla, who is returning to the tube.

"The fact that TV gives me life beyond films is what I find very interesting. It keeps you in circulation. Prior to this, for an actor, it was the silver screen and after that nothing because there were no avenues," Juhi said in an interview.

Heroines in Bollywood do not enjoy too long a career span as opposed to male actors. But Juhi feels TV has given them an option.

The 43-year-old is herself quite active on television. She was earlier seen as a judge on dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, and will now host Badmaash Company, a children's chat show that will go on air on Colors on Sep 17.

According to Juhi, celebrities' perception about TV has transformed too. "About 10 years ago, we thought that television is not a thing to do, but now there is such a burst in the media, TV is in almost every home, the viewership is massive, so it's great!

"Also, now so many other film personalities have taken a plunge in television. From Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) to Hrithik Roshan...everyone is there. It's very acceptable now and you can use it to your interest," she said.

"I don't have to do television if I don't like anything. I would only do it if I like something, but the fact is that I have a medium now that I can utilise," added Juhi, who is stepping into the shoes of an anchor for the first time with Badmassh Company. The mother of two children - Jhanvi, 10, and Arjun, eight - explained that although the show was challenging, she thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it.

"It's a very refreshing concept and it's such a sunshine kind of show you could watch it in the worst of your moods and it will make you happy. In this show, the kids are not told what to say and what not to say; so sometimes what they say is so amusing. So I really enjoyed it.”— IANS

Kate's jewel association

Hollywood star Kate Hudson is all set to launch her jewellery line called CH+KH. The 32-year-old Almost Famous actor has collaborated with longtime friend Laurie Lynn Stark, who owns Los Angeles-based jewellery brand Chrome Hearts.

"It occurred to us, we spend all of this time together - why don't we make something?" she said. Whereas Stark adds, "We used a lot of aquamarines because Kate loves them, but, to me, they also evoke her personality. She's so open and light." The bohemian-inspired, ultra-feminine pieces can be purchased at selected Chrome Heart boutiques.

Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn my style icons: Priyanka Chopra

Style sister: Priyanka Chopra

Bollywood diva Priyanka Chopra said that she idolises yesteryear Hollywood icons Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn when it comes to fashion and style.

"In Hindi films I always used to like Mumtaz and in Hollywood films I always loved Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. I really liked them a lot," said Priyanka while addressing a programme of a fashion tour.

Priyanka, however, had a word of advice. "I always want to tell young girls that they should find out the dress that they are comfortable in and that suits their personality. They should not look at what big stars are wearing. Always try to find a dress in which you are comfortable," said Priyanka. — IANS

Robber in disguise

Misunderstood: Leonardo DiCaprio

Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio, who visited a jewellery store wearing dark glasses and a hooded top, was almost mistaken for a robber by a shop assistant.

The 36-year-old Titanic star is currently in Australia filming Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and he took sometime out of his hectic schedule to visit Sydney's Family Jewels shop.

A sales assistant working behind the counter - who has been named Linda - feared the worst when she saw two burly bodyguards enter the store before DiCaprio walked in, disguised in shades, a hood, and a baseball cap.

"Linda was working on her own and I was next door grabbing a coffee. Linda was serving a customer when the two big bodyguards approached. The customer sees what's happening and says, 'This doesn't look good'.

"Linda sent the customer next door to get me, thinking the shop is about to be robbed by these guys. By the time I get in there Linda had realised who she was serving and let me know everything was all right," said the shop owner.

A novel star

Up and through: Keira Knightley

Hollywood actor Keira Knightley will star in director Joe Wright's adaptation of the epic Leo Tolstoy novel, Anna Karenina. The 26-year-old will be seen opposite Jude Law and Aaron Johnson in the film. "Joe Wright will direct the epic romance Anna Karenina, adapted from Leo Tolstoy's classic novel by Academy award winner Tom Stoppard. The Working Title Films production will commence filming in the UK and Russia this month," said an announcement by the production company.

Wright has worked with Knightley on literary adaptations twice before with movies Pride & Prejudice and Atonement.

Anna Karenina was published in 1873, the novel is considered one of the world's great pieces of literature and is the story of love within the Russian aristocracy. Knightley first came to national attention after starring in 2002 comedy drama Bend It Like Beckham.

She gained international recognition following her appearance opposite Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.

The actor is currently filming alongside Steve Carell in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which is the story of a man who tries to find his childhood sweetheart before an asteroid crashes into the Earth. — PTI

Great expectations

Hollywood actor Anne Hathaway says she was under a lot of pressure when she was filming One Day because the book it is based on is so well loved.

Hathaway, 28, who stars along Jim Sturgess in the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of David Nicholl's romantic novel, was surprised when she learnt how highly regarded her character Emma is, a website reported.

"Well I didn't realise how deeply loved the character was when I signed on to play Emma. I wish I didn't really know! It became even larger when people kept asking me, 'So you're playing Emma? Will you be doing this with the character? Will you be doing that?' I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, people know every word of this book!' "I quickly realised I was going to disappoint a lot of people. People have their own idea about who these characters are and how they act and how they sound," she said.

However, the brunette beauty did struggle to deal with the criticism and weight of expectation. "I'm a book lover. I feel possessive of my beloved stories as well but I am also a movie lover. I know that there are things you can do on screen that you can't do with a book. Often, a book will be wonderful in a different way," she added. — PTI

No looking back

Fast forward: Madonna

Pop diva Madonna refuses to look back on her past as she says she only wants to concentrate on her future. The 53-year-old singer will celebrate 30 years in the music industry in 2012. While she has led an interesting, and sometimes controversial life, she says she is too busy in her future projects, a website reported.

"I don't think much about the past, to tell you the truth. I'm too busy looking forward," she said. Madonna, who is currently promoting new movie W E which she directed, also says people should stop worrying about having the perfect life and be content with what they've got.

"Stop striving for perfection because there is no such thing. We have to look beneath the surface and I think that we can't take it personally and literally. We can't judge a book by its cover; you have to read the book.

"How do you expect to know a person? You can't expect to know who they are by reading an article in a magazine about them. We live in a society that is obsessed with celebrities and it's pretty easy to get famous very quickly now," she said. — PTI

Chatter box
We all have dreams and desires. So, we asked a few television celebrities to reveal their dream car and what they look for in it. Find out, which hot wheels work best for these stars

Ragini Khanna

I love the Bugatti Veyron but it is one of the most expensive cars in the world, so I don't think I will be able to buy it ever. I wish I could drive it at least once. It is a super fast car with a speed of over 400 km/hr. It is awesome but it might never work on Indian roads. Actually, I should say it isn't meant for Indian roads. Currently, I drive a Volkswagen which is a cool car.

Vivian D' Sena

I can't afford it, but I love a Lamborghini. I love its unique shape. Recently I saw Hyundai's latest launch called Avante and I think it is perfect for Indian roads. I drive a Hyundai Verna currently and while buying a car I don't look for mileage as no car can give you more than or even 30 km/hr. and I also hate diesel cars. So I look for reasonable prices, look and general driving experience.

Sana Sheikh

As I have a petite frame, I love small cars. Once I had gone to check out a Scorpio but my friends discouraged me and suggested it was too big for me, I wouldn't be able to maneuver it well so I didn't buy it. Maruti 800 was the first car I ever bought and later I got a Ritz, which I simply love. My dream car is an SUV CRV.

Ride of royalty: Karan Kundra

Karan Kundra

Rolls Royce Phantom is my dream car as it is bold and magnetic. I guess it makes a statement no one can miss. I do plan to own one someday. I currently enjoy driving Ford Endeavour.

Hiten Tejwani

Any car which can hold it self against the bad Indian roads, potholes, traffic and rains is a good car and my dream car. I don't look for hi-fi models when I look at cars to buy but one that is efficient. I drive a BMW which is a good, strong car and hasn't given me any trouble at all. For now, that is my dream car.

Kinshuk Mahajan

Audi Q7, the full-size luxury crossover SUV is my dream car. I have a fascination for it. I don't know when would I be able to afford it but I have a huge crush on it for sure. I drive a Honda City currently and I love driving it. An SUV makes driving easier on Indian roads as you crossover potholes without too many jerks.

Beemer fan: Karan V Grover

Karan V Grover

I would love to own a BMW X6 which is a mid-size luxury car. It is sleek and one of those high-end cars. It is a fascinating car with a superb look and design. I do plan to own it one day though I currently drive a Honda.

Actor Vidya Sinha also makes her comeback with this show. How was it working with her?
