Five bikes set ablaze
Chandigarh, September 11
Miscreants set as many as five motorcycles, parked outside houses, on fire at Hallo Majra here in the wee hours of today. All bikes were destroyed in the incident, which took place around 2.30 am. The police has identified three suspects, who were drug addicts, residing in the area and efforts were on to arrest them.

Stray cattle have free run in southern sectors
Chandigarh, September 11
Despite the municipal corporation’s tall claims of having curbed the stray cattle menace in the city’s southern areas, the problem still persists in Sectors 47, 48, 49 and 52. The issue has become a major concern for the residents who say it has become dangerous to drive on the streets with cows and bullocks freely roaming around, which often lead to accidents.

MC officials visit garbage processing plant

Following UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas’s directions, a team of municipal corporation (MC) on Sunday visited the garbage processing plant and dumping ground to verify the cause of foul smell that spread across the city. The team led by MC Commissioner Prerna Puri, along with the Additional Commissioner, Chief Engineer and MOH, visited both the sites.

CTU to add 96 buses to local fleet

Only a single entry and exit point connecting the Sector 20 with other parts of the town has become a bane of the local residents since the flyover has been constructed on the national highway 22 between Zirakpur and Panchkula.

Traffic police in-charge suspended

The local traffic police in-charge, ASI Paramjit Singh, has been placed under suspension after being booked for forgery and corruption. The police officer had reportedly been using a fake challan book to issue traffic tickets to offenders here.

Child labour practice rampant

Tall claims of the labour department of putting in efforts to check child labour in the town seem to have fallen flat, as a large number of children can still be seen working on roadside dhabas, tea stalls and restaurants.

Chemist gets RI in cheque-bounce case

Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Ajaib Singh has sentenced Harish Rajan, a chemist running Cheema Medical shop in Phase V here, to rigorous imprisonment of one-and-a-half years and a fine of Rs 30,000 on being held guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Thieves strike in Sector 32
Chandigarh, September 11
Thieves struck at Survey of India Colony in Sector 32 late last night and committed a series of thefts in the area. The UT police was caught napping as the thieves made hay. They ransacked a house, stole petrol from parked scooters and did not even spare manhole covers. There is no security guard in the colony.

2 booked for fraud
Chandigarh, September 11
The UT police has booked two owners of a company -- Ultratech Fuel and Pollution Control -- operating from Sector 17 for allegedly duping a Ludhiana resident of Rs 5 lakh. The two took the money in lieu of a deal for selling their product.

Panchkula, September 11
The police today got five-day remand for five persons nabbed with 3 kg of opium and arms and ammunition from a house in Sector 9 last night. The custody of the accused was required to know their links in other areas and the hideouts of their other accomplices, said the police.

Two youths detained with 1.4-kg gold

The operation cell of Chandigarh Police apprehended two youths with huge quantity of jewellery from Sector 17 on Sunday. Both the youths were rounded up by the police. The youths, identified as Ashok and Bajrang, were detained by the police after they were found carrying 1.40-kg gold, 27 diamonds and two bracelets in a bag.

Ajay Singla defeated Sandeep Kochaar to win the seven frame final match of the 1st Chandigarh Club Amateur Snooker Tournament held at the Chandigarh Club here today. In an exciting match, Ajay lifted the title after defeating Sandeep by 4-3 (43-39, 38-43, 52-40, 46-56, 67-69, 57-62, 53-47).
