Two women rob jeweller of ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh
Chandigarh, September 9
Two unidentified women allegedly defrauded a jeweller at Sector 22 here of gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh today. Paramjeet Singh, the jeweller, reported to the police that the two women came in a car and purchased the jewellery.

Woman ‘IAS officer’, aide held for Rs 45-lakh fraud
Chandigarh, September 9
The Palampur police today arrested a woman from Sector 37 here for impersonating as an IAS officer. Pooja Sharma and her partner Mohit Sharma were arrested and booked under Sections 468, 471 and 120 of the IPC.

Normal life was thrown out of gear after heavy rain lashed the city and the adjoining areas of Mohali and Panchkula during the past 20 hours. Patil directs admn to step up security
Chandigarh, September 9
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil presided over a meeting of senior police and civil officers to review security preparedness of important offices, establishments and VIPs today. Issuing strict guidelines on securing all important government buildings, public places and VIP areas in the city, Patil said special focus should be laid on the Punjab and Haryana Assembly, the Secretariat and the Punjab and Haryana High Court along with other places like district courts, airport, railway station and bus stations.

Taking a serious note of violations by school bus drivers, the State Transport Authority (STA) has now started issuing notices to the school authorities to comply with the guidelines for plying buses.

No end to traffic violations despite State Transport Authority measures

Even after the issuance of fresh guidelines to school bus operators by the UT State Transport Authority (STA), there is not end to traffic violations with at least 62 school buses being challaned and four buses impounded by the authority for various traffic violations in August alone.

Badal lashes out at Cong ahead of SGPC polls
Bassi Pathana. September 9
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has asserted there was no truth in the allegations made by Panjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and former CM Amarinder Singh that 42 of the 86 gurdwaras managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), including Amritsar’s Golden Temple, were incurring financial losses. “Rather, the Golden Temple has fixed deposits of Rs 90 crore in banks”, he told reporters on Friday.

Notice to UT administration on lax security at High Court

The Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising acting Chief Justice Adarsh Goel and Justice AK Mittal, today issued notice of motion to the UT administration for October 13 on a PIL seeking issuance of appropriate directions to the administration to evolve and install a foolproof security system on the High Court premises.

Handa appointed special public prosecutor

RK Handa, a city-based lawyer, has been appointed special public prosecutor of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Samjhauta blast case. A notification had recently been issued for Handa’s appointment.

Man convicted of power theft
Panchkula, September 9
A local court today convicted a Sector 12-A resident in connection with electricity theft case. The court convicted Shivpal Chaudhary, owner of Vishnu Bhawan banquet hall. According to information, in 2010, the electricity department had detected electricity theft of Rs 13, 65000 in the bhawan. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.

Two booked in dowry case
Zirakpur, September 9
The police today booked two persons, including a woman, in a dowry case on the complaint of Navjivni Saini, a resident of Modern Enclave, Zirakpur. In her complaint, Navjivni said she had tied the knot with Sarvjit Singh, a resident of Ropar, on November 11, 2009. She alleged that her husband Sarvjit Singh and mother-in-law Jaswant Kaur harassed her for bringing more dowry. A case was registered against the accused.

FIR lodged against youth

The police here has registered an FIR against a Chandigarh resident for raping a Sector-20 resident on the pretext of marrying her. On the victim’s complaint, the police has booked accused Gagandeep, resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh, under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Librarian booked for molesting students

The police has booked Sadhu Singh, a librarian at Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School, Sector 20 for molesting girl students. Principal of the school lodged a complaint against he librarian yesterday.

After losing the first frame, Gurpreet made a strong comeback in the second frame and won the game after clearing blue, pink and black balls in his last shot. Saurav went down to Gurpreet 1-2 (39-48, 65-57 and 72-70).
