Screen presence
A wall-to-wall screen, digital sound system and the cozy ambience of your own home make for an out-of-the-world experience when it comes to watching a movie. And, more and more people in Chandigarh are waking up to the trend of having a home theatre

A small theatre with a seating capacity for 50 on the eighth floor is what Mukesh Ambani is planning for his new palace. Wonder why people go to theatres to watch movies and not sit at home for the same? The answer is simple--the big screen, the sound system and the effects and altogether a different feel!

But people in Chandigarh have changed things for experiencing such a feel at their own places, by setting up proper home theatres.

The technology is evolving, new innovations are coming up, and the players in the market are experimenting with a variety of features to lure customers.

Sony comes up with the latest X-Vid format where you can play videos through your pen drive, added tweeters on top for enhancing the vocals which in return help in the clarity of the beats.

Shares Bunty Kashyap, in-charge of home theatre section at Sony showroom, Acks Inc-8, "Nowadays there is a lot of demand for home theatres. In fact, there are 3D compatible home theatres which have a wireless LAN option available, along with high definition quality, that too in touch screen."

He adds, "A proper home theatre requires a 40 inches screen that costs around Rs 54,000 and a home theatre system with 1000 watts RMS and having PMP 11,400 which costs around Rs 17,000."

Someone who is an avid movie lover, the home theatre enhances the experience of watching a movie altogether.

LG also has come up with a 3D home theatre system which has an option of surfing the Internet on it if you have a wi-fi connection.

Says Dinesh, engineer with LG Shoppe-8, "Recently people are going in for wall-to-wall screens for home theatres which is four feet in height. The variant option is to get home theatres installed along with your LCDs." He adds, "The latest home theatre system is model number 954 TB which has video options of both CD and DVD, 1000 watts RMS and dolby digital."

Most clients know what they want and go for extensive research market before they zero down on a particular system. Shares PS Mattewal, additional advocate general, Punjab, "Before buying a home theatre I did a lot of market research and then I decided on Sony. It is more compact. There are new technologies coming up but not better than the western ones." He adds, "It is a relaxing moment for me when I watch movies on my personal home theatre"

The trend is surely catching up. Shares Ankush Kaushal, a doctor with PGI, "I saw a movie at my friend's place on his home theatre and could not get over this wonderful experience. So, I got one installed at my place too." He adds, "Some of the movies that I have missed, I watch them at home now."

For some it is the first thing they ever bought after setting up their place, even before buying furniture.

Smiles Nidhi Singh, a lawyer by profession, "Chairs and tables were not a priority but home theatre definitely was. Initially we watched movies sitting on our wooden flooring. My family and I are regular users of the system and have stopped going to theatres." She adds, "We called our friends over for the World Cup and it was great fun. We enjoyed every bit of it. Now, it has become a great bonding agent, as family and friends can sit together and share a good laugh. So, it definitely gives value for money"

For some it's more than value for money. Says Manan Gupta, a class XII student, "I always wanted a home theatre at my newly renovated place, especially to watch the action packed movies with my friends." He adds, "Now, I will also try to get my Play Station 3 connected with it."

So great things come in big package too!

Finger count

Here's an advice for ladies who are really passionate about someone - check his ring finger as its length could be linked to his sex drive. The longer the fourth finger compared to the second, known as the 2D:4D ratio, the more attractive he is likely to be to the opposite sex.

Over the years, the difference between the ring finger and the index finger has been linked to everything from health problems, sperm count, aggressive behaviour, sexual orientation and sports prowess.

Now, biologists at the University of Florida have discovered that male-female ring finger proportions are tied to sex hormones in the womb—a finding that may offer health insights.

Their study explains for the first time why men's fourth fingers are usually longer than their index fingers, while for women it is the other way round.

Martin Cohn, PhD, and Zhengui Zheng, PhD, of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the department of molecular genetics and microbiology at the UF College of Medicine, found that the developing digits of male and female mouse embryos are packed with receptors for sex hormones.

Differences in how these hormones activate receptors in males and females affect the growth of specific digits. — ANI

The trump card
Narinder Punj, MD of Goa-based Casino Royale, talks about the flamboyance of Punjabis who constitute the major chunk of visitors at his casino
Ashima Sehajpa

Bet on the flamboyance of Punjabis. Keep the stakes high. You will never lose. Because it is one attribute Punjabis are known for. Going by the same measure, we blindly trusted the source which added to the account, "Four hundred and fifty people from Punjab visited Goa last month in a chartered plane to enjoy themselves at Casino Royale."

The reliable source adds that in India, maximum number of Punjabis mark their attendance at the casinos in Goa. Whatever happened to the moral inhibitions associated with gambling? "To begin with, it wasn't easy," comes from the source and our subject, Narinder Punj, and nobody in India can explain the scenario better than him. He is the MD, High Street Entertainment & Cruises Pvt Ltd, the company that owns Casino Royale, the biggest casino of India, along with five others in Goa.

He was in Chandigarh on Tuesday to promote the World Gaming Festival, a three-day affair that will commence on September 23 at Casino Royale.

Sharing his experience of changing the perception of people in India, he says, "We began with making casinos' environment suitable for families. The concept of casinos would have failed had we not taken into consideration the socio-cultural fabric of the country."

Thus a space was created for restaurants and a crèche in the casino. "From the gambling industry to an entertainment industry, the transformation gradually came about," he says. As a result, a considerable part of revenue generation is credited to the casinos in Goa. Just as there is beach tourism, there is casino tourism. He adds that casinos have generated a lot of employment and livelihood opportunities in Goa.

Taking Goa as the model, a lot of other states every now and then have tried to float the concept of casinos. "Punjab and Haryana have also made attempts but guess the political entanglements are not easy to get away with. However, sooner or later, it has to happen, since the revenue it generates is immense. Not just for the primary industry of casinos, also for the related ones like restaurants, hotels, transportation…" With Sikkim opening a couple of live gaming casinos, he is hopeful that other states will follow suit.

A bit of encouragement, he feels, keeps on seeping in from the Bollywood flicks. Whatever light they show the gaming culture in, at least it generates awareness.

What do we need to win the game-luck or trick? "All you need is skill to make money in casinos. You need to learn when to bluff, when to show and when to fold cards. Luck is never a winner's choice to win the game." Are those counting money to bet in a casino paying attention?

The Tiger returns
Salman to resume shooting on September 10

Bollywood star Salman Khan, who recently underwent a surgery in Pittsburgh, US, to treat a nerve problem, is expected to resume shooting for Ek Tha Tiger from September 10 in Dublin.

"Salman has to get a check-up done in three months to decide if he needs to get a second procedure done. He should commence shooting for Yash Raj soon in Dublin," said Atul Agnihotri, his brother-in-law and the producer of his blockbuster Bodyguard.

"Salman has a trigeminal neuralgia with an AV malformation. He also has another rare complication. He has been treated in the US. The procedure took seven hours and it is successful," he added.

Ek Tha Tiger is a Yash Raj Films (YRF) production venture and Kabir Khan will direct it. Sources at YRF confirm that the shooting resumes on Sep 10, which incidentally is the date when Salman's last Eid release Dabangg had come out.

The crew, including Katrina Kaif (who, as reported, has set aside all other projects), has been keeping itself on hold monitoring Salman's post-surgery recuperation. Now they can heave a sigh of relief as Salman is well on the way to recovery.

"After the seven-hour surgery, the doctors had prescribed a strict regime for Salman to follow. But he has defied the rules, as usual. He's filled with mauj-masti in the US. Salman has been calling up his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri for the box office figures of 'Bodyguard'. Though the doctors have predicted the possibility of a second surgery three months from now, Salman has healed with amazing dexterity, leaving even his surgeons flummoxed," said a source.

About Salman not paying attention to doctors' orders, Agnihotri said: "He is en route to recovery, defying post-operation instructions. That's Salman for you."

Imran's Dehradun connect

Family first: Imran Khan

Shooting in this northern city made Imran emotional as his great uncle, Nasir Hussain, had some memorable times in Dehradun which he had told Imran about. Also, his wife Avantika's maternal family is from Dehradun, which made Imran feel very much at home.

Look who's Kareena scared of?

Kareena Kapoor is working with a female director, Reema Kagti, for the first time. Reema is one person Bebo is scared of! The actor is extremely particular about arriving on the sets on time, as Reema is a hard taskmaster. Though she's chilled out on the sets but when it comes to work Reema is a no-nonsense woman.

Full stop: Bipasha Basu

I'm not wooing anyone: Bipasha

After her break-up with John, Bipasha Basu has been linked with many actors and recently it was said that she is trying to woo Ranbir Kapoor.

Bipasha cleared, "Am wooing Ranbir! Bizarre! Just because I love the Rockstar trailer and I tweeted about it! Ranbir is an awesome guy but I don't need to woo him like this. I like to be wooed; I don't need to woo anyone for that matter."

Singing debut

Sing along: Pankaj Kapur

Pankaj Kapur is not only making his directorial debut with Mausam starring Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor but he has also sung Saj Dhaj Ke with Mika.

The song is like a tribute to Mauja hi Mauja from Jab We Met and has already become a rage.

Hum, Tum Aur Pia

Fresh face: Pia Trivedi

Model and VJ Pia Trivedi makes her debut in Bollywood with Hum, Tum Aur Shabana. Her elder sister Binal is also a model.

Like father, like son

Fans who have been eager to see the two Kapoor men share the screen will not have to wait any longer. Heart-throb, Ranbir Kapoor has already shot for Pepsi's new commercial with his father Rishi Kapoor which will go on-air on September 15.

Life beyond movies

What's cooking: Shahid Kapoor

Who doesn't love Shahid Kapoor? He is simply adorable. He says he is a great cook and that is reason enough to marry him! Jokes apart, he is all over the place promoting Mausam.

We take a break from the movie business and get him to talk about life outside.

Last break

Before I started shooting for Mausam, I took a month-long break to spend some quality time with my family and rehearse for the role. I didn't want to let myself get distracted from Mausam so I didn't even sign any other film while I was shooting for Mausam.

When I'm not acting…

Since the day I become an actor, I haven't got any extra time to pass. I am either reading scripts or rehearsing. I like going for drives and I like playing cricket and scrabble with my brother Ishaan.

The real me

When I am not shooting, I spend time with family and friends. Travelling's my passion so I go for some short trips with friends which includes trekking or some adventure sport. I love dancing as that's my hobby so I just put on some music and dance if I am at home. I also love cooking so if I am in the mood, I make some delicious Chinese and Italian food.

My kind of movies

I love watching action movies so I watch all the old ones. I even go to watch movies at the cinema. Recently, I liked Singham.

Fitness freak

Oh yeah, I am a fitness freak and I love working out. That's the time when I sweat everything out and my mind is calm. I am more into weight training but sometimes I do yoga as it makes me calm. My routine includes weight training, cardio, swimming, jogging. My diet plan is strict as I have to drink a lot of milk. To make six pack abs on a vegetarian diet is very hard. I have a great body today because I am very dedicated to my work and self.—HRM

Algebra of kissing

Lip lock: Colin Farrell

Hollywood actor Colin Farrell enjoys kissing scenes on screen but says it feels strange at the same time.

The 35-year-old says he loves getting the chance to lock lips with his female co-stars, but finds the idea of kissing and getting paid for it uncomfortable, a website reported. "It's always strange to kiss someone when you know they're getting paid to kiss you back. That's the most simple, mathematical way to put it. But it's part of the gig and at the same time, kissing is lovely. So any time I get to kiss someone, that's great," said Farrell.

The Minority Report star also said it can be uncomfortable getting any closer, and relies on humour to get through intimate scenes. "When the clothes start coming off, though, that's when it can get a bit uncomfortable. And then what do you fall back on? Humour. That's what we do as human beings don't we? We laugh, we joke, and we try to poke fun at an embarrassing situation. But there's never been a bad day at the office," he added. — PTI

Old is gold

Forever young: Al Pacino

Hollywood legend Al Pacino's date at the Venice Film Festival premiere of his new film was his girlfriend Lucia Sola who is 40 years younger to him. The 71-year-old filmmaker, who attended the fest to promote his new movie Wild Salome, proved that age doesn't matter when he was joined by his 31-year-old girlfriend. Wild Salmone is Pacino's latest directorial and tells the tale of Oscar Wilde's once-forbidden play about illicit love and revenge. "It's a much more ambitious and complicated gesture of cinema," Pacino said.

The pair were all smiles as they arrived on the red carpet dressed in their finest with Pacino, in a navy suit, matching his younger partner who wore a full-length midnight blue gown. — PTI

School time

Hollywood star couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are reportedly planning to enroll their children at a primary school in London. The couple reportedly zeroed in on London because Pitt is currently shooting his World War Z in the country and the couple is likely to stay there for a long time, a publication reported.

"The children are home tutored in the United States. But wherever possible Brad and Angelina like to have them attend local schools to introduce them to the culture of each country," said a source. The couple raises six kids; 10-year-old Maddox, 7-year-old Pax, 6-year-old Zahara, 5-year-old Shiloh, and 3-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. The family has been staying in a rented home in London's Richmond area. — PTI

Oh My Gold!
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

It's the glitter of the gold that never fails to impress an onlooker; especially a woman! Though diamond is called a girl's best friend, it is the yellow metal that sets the heart racing. Fashion trends in gold jewellery are fast changing even as gold prices continue to set new records every year. And the latest trend to catch up with the soaring gold prices is gold jewellery in 14 and 18 karat.

Gold - the new gem

Gold, the ever-precious commodity, elevates a piece to an iconic status. Though designers like Micheletto and Vendorafa presented gold in wood and ceramic pieces, the trend of gold nestled in silver is catching fast.

Says Savvy from Silver Haze, "World Gold council has come up with varied variety of pieces. Gold has been used with other metals and now is being presented as a fashion piece. There is an edge to the extraordinary heritage of gold with reducing the karat and presenting it in contemporary designs like floral patterns, web-like structures and mingling it with silver and other gems."

Precious metal

If you follow gold trends then at Vicenza Fair gold was presented as beautiful pieces. Delicate and desirable, slim chains were shown, which were elegant and classy. Says Bhavneet, a jewellery designer from Ludhiana who deals in gold and diamond gems, "Tiny gold charms are doing very well and they are made in 14 and 18 karat. Reducing the cost, these make the pieces more precious, as gems and diamond-cut techniques are used to catch the light and the eye."

New designs on the block

"Expert craftsmanship is needed when gold comes in lower karat," says Gurpreet Dhillon, a diamond merchant from phase VII, Mohali. She adds, "With latest designs, gold has been taken to a new level. Designers have showcased bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings that demonstrate detail in gold jewellery, which previously was only possible through hand-carving. Delicate, spidery, skeletal structures were weaved through designs and those are possible only when the gold is thin."

Colour code

Diamond-cut and silk finishes is what is in for the festive season. Says Savvy, "Yellow gold, white gold and rose gold is the latest rage and these opulent pieces are for the young."

Shapes for the season

Gold hearts, pebbles, stars, seashells and flowers are what the World Gold Council has predicted as the shapes for 2011. Smaller details complemented by bolder shapes are another theme to look out for. Coils and web too make a fashion statement in gold.

Kuch different ho jaye

Shooting for Zilla Ghaziabad was fun. A guy flick with Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi and Arshad Warsi. I have been fortunate to be part of both mainstream and parallel cinema. It's been a lovely journey striking a balance between working with Shyam Benegal and Rituparno Ghosh on one side and Yash Chopra, Rakesh Mehra and Subhash Ghai on the other side, and also those very intense women-oriented roles with talented new directors.

I just had Monica released, which got me lots of critical acclaim. I realised my core audience has recognised me by my commercial films like Veer Zara, Dilli 6 and Welcome To Sajjanpur. So, I decided to take up a few more of the commercial films and also keep enjoying my realistic cinema.

The first one to come in that league of films has been Zilla Ghaziabad. A role I totally fell for. This is something I've never portrayed before. This was sone pe suhaaga!

What a joyride it's been! On the first day at shoot, I went to the set with makeup on as usual. But my director asked me to remove all makeup. I was taken aback as I've never done a role totally without makeup. That's when Arshad came up to me and said, "Not many girls would have the guts to come in front of the camera without makeup or they are busy doing just that. But you are different hai na. And I am sure you will look lovely!"

With those reassuring words, I went to face the camera for the first time without makeup. After a first nervous shoot, I was fine seeing the thumbs up from my cameraman and director and at a distance from Arshad as well! This is my first film with Arshad and I must say he's been a very good colleague. Right from helping me with my scenes, giving cues when he could easily be in his van, or feeding us all with yummy local food, it's been fun. Singham had just released and I wanted to see it in the only theatre in Panchgani. But Arshad suggested that the entire crew would go together to watch it!

So in a packed theatre, me, Ravi Kissen and Arshad along with the entire unit and bodyguards watched Singham whistling and clapping away to glory.

As was I wrapping the film, on my way back, I had a smile on my face. It was a fulfilling experience, working this film. Amongst my most watched films, Zilla would be one of my favourite and I guess Arshad would be one of my favourite co-actors. As I continue my journey from one film to the other, all different from one another, I keep a bagful of cherished memories associated with each one of them. I look up and thank someone up there for these little blessings and more...

Behavioural problem
Now study says parents turning embarrassment for kids

Many parents in Britain are turning an embarrassment for their children due to their awkward behaviour at public places, says a study. Dads are leading the way when it comes to embarrassing behaviour in front of their teenage offspring. Be it a spot of over-enthusiastic dancing during a family celebration or public displays of affection, they are guaranteed to make their sons and daughters cringe.

The British mums are getting in on the act too with their old jokes or getting drunk. During a poll, commissioned by Twentieth Century Fox for the release of the Modern Family Season 2 box-set, out of the 1,500 British teenagers interviewed, 88 per cent admitted to being regularly embarrassed by their parents.

About three-quarters said they would not introduce a boyfriend or girlfriend to their parents if they embarrassed them. Some 63 per cent said their fathers were more cringe-inducing than mothers.

The study also revealed teenagers spending only 3.5 hours a week talking with their parents compared to 10.5 hours of chatting with friends on social networking sites.

Researchers also quizzed 1,500 parents for the survey and found that mothers and fathers are so desperate to impress their children that six in 10 admitted they had lied about their past to seem cooler. Relationship expert Jenni Trent Hughes said: "It's amazing the lengths parents go to try to communicate with their kids.

Green thumb
When water is scarce...
satish narula

One of the big problems of gardening is the water management especially during the lean periods when the restrictions are on. The solution is to fix priorities depending on requirements. The other is to select species that need less water. The third method is to provide with aids that help conserve moisture. However, the best method is to grow plants that need minimum water.

The nature has given some plants the inherent resistance against drought conditions. As all kinds of plants are available for growing in the garden these days-plants suitable for diverse conditions like the rain forests, dry lands, deserts, swamps etc.-one has just to plan the garden as per the availability of resources.

Although most of the shrubs have minimum of water requirements, some are nearly drought resistant. Kaner is one such plant. A few years back we only knew about the pilli and lal (yellow and red) kaner that grew to about 12 to 15 feet high and bore good amount of flowers. Over a period of time, however, new species were introduced and now we have dwarf kinds that grow up to five feet or so. There is yet another type that grows up to three or four feet, bearing single flowers. Such shrubs are suitable for parks and open lands as these are immune to pollution and assaults. No doubt these are suitable for home gardens too. But if you want more, go in for the variegated kaner. It also bears flowers in profusion and has an added advantage of supporting variegated foliage.

Calliandra is another such shrub that lives in no-water zones. It is also very popular where minimum maintenance is afforded. The shrub bears spectacular puff ball like flowers. It is also suitable for roadside or central verge plantation as it also braves pollution assaults. In this case too, now dwarf version of the shrub, hardly growing to two feet is available. But this is suitable for home gardens only.

People think growing cacti could also be an option under the minimum water regime but I would like to caution them against such a notion. Cacti grown in home gardens do need water like other plants. Some give reference of those growing in the wild. No doubt they live and survive even desert like conditions but have you ever noticed most of these are damaged or scarred. A home gardener cannot afford to keep a scarred specimen. In fact, the succulents kept at home are pampered to give their best by maintaining their shine, geometrical shape and form.

BUSY BABE: Katrina Kaif

Actress Katrina Kaif is super busy these days with a hectic shooting schedule and promotions of her upcoming film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.

She's been working non-stop and had to reschedule Simi Garewal's TV chat show twice.

SEEKING APPOINTMENT: Simi Garewal

Now with Salman's sudden operation throwing the shooting dates of Katrina's next project Ek Tha Tiger further, Katrina had to cancel Simi's shoot again.

With most hotties appearing on the show, Katrina was the only one from the younger lot that Simi has never interviewed. Guess we will have to wait for season 2 of Simi Selects: India's Most Desirable for the Kat-Simi meet.

Fiction or fact?

With the promos of Rajan Shahi's new show Havan on Colors on air, speculations were rife that the protagonist of the show, a spiritual guru, a baba was inspired from various sadhu, sants we have amidst us. But when the fingers were pointed towards few celeb babas like Asaram and Ramdev that producer Shahi thought best to clarify lest it became a controversy. He was quoted saying, the show's lead actor Narendra Jha's character in the show isn't based on any living or dead person. It bears no resemblance to any particular sadhu, sant or guru. It's pure fiction. Hopefully this disclaimer will satisfy the noisemakers as it seems Jha plays a negative baba in the show.
