Like mother, like daughter; girls do take after their mothers, otherwise one wouldn't find identifiable characteristics in various families. Girls are a reflection of their mother in a number of things - be it social skills, aesthetics, temperament or attitude towards others.
A recent research has given it an interesting twist though. "Daughters have a strong influence on the shopping behaviours of their mothers, but there is no similar effect the other way," says a recent study conducted by Ayalla A Ruvio, at Temple University's Fox School of Business, USA. The finding indicates that teens may have more impact on their parents than previously believed. And a quick check with Chandigarh's fair sex points out that socialisation as well as reverse socialisation goes much beyond shopping.
While growing up Aerika (16) looked up to her mother, just like any other daughter would. Now the scales have turned heavily in her favour. "I think that is the way. Today, girls are so much aware about everything, including fashion. I do take her opinion when it comes to fashion," says her mom Sukhbir Bhandal, a teacher at Guru Nanak Public School-37. Beyond shopping, Aerika and her mum run a mutual admiration club - while the daughter wants to have mum's polite ways, the mother holds daughter's confident demeanour in high esteem!
For Rabiya and Savita Bhatti, sharing goes beyond tips. This mother-daughter duo doesn't hesitate to raid each-other's treasures. "Well, mum's jewellery is a steal. I can't stop myself from trying it," exclaims Rabia, first year BBA student. "Mum falls for my shoes though," she shares the secret. "I think it's essential to be in sync with the youth. And, it begins from home. I am open to fresh fashion tips from this Vogue-read generation," smiles Savita. It's not only mum's style sense that Rabiya is in love with. "Mum has this trait or call it an aura, that everyone wants to be in her company; wish I could develop that."
Hema Bedi, a content writer, and her teen daughter Shaira are in the same fashion league. It's Western that this duo falls for. And, yes, here too it's the daughter who takes the lead. "Shaira has a keen fashion sense. What I love about her is that she exactly knows the look that she wants to have," says Hema. Shaira is happy playing the guide to mum and proudly shares, "Sometimes mum even borrows my dresses to go to dinners; how cool is that!"
Kaushik girls value their mother's wardrobe. Both of them, Divya and Suruchi, frequently borrow from their mum's wardrobe, be it the 70s boho-shirt or her wedding jewellery (worn under strict supervision). But yes, they also replenish it with their exploits from across the world. "Whenever I go shopping, I generally pick up three pieces in one go - for mom, me and my sister. Be it silk scarves or Mac lipwear or kohl. Viva glam III is definitely the shade for all Kaushik women," smiles Divya, manager, business development, UTV. The women are so much in tune when it comes to fashion that this summer in Boston they ended up picking out exactly the same tops from Anne Taylor!
"At one time I used to be aware of the season's trends in western outfits and accessories (I spent two years studying in UK and USA), be it the colour of the coat for the season or the latest style in shoes. Now, when it comes to Western outfits, a must in my wardrobe when I travel, free tips from the girls are on offer full-time. An update on brand names in accessories and shoes from Suruchi and Divya does come in handy," says Sharda, director, Regional Institute of English-32.
Their give and take goes much beyond; the girls have taken the love for languages and aesthetics, for exploring the unknown and making the best out of every situation from their mum. "The older I get, the more I see my mother in me. From her attention to detail, her way with people or her work ethic, these are what I consciously/unconsciously emulate everyday," says Suruchi, manager CRA Consultancy, Boston, USA.
Well, it only confirms that reverse socialisation might be true to just fashion, but, when it comes to life, daughters uphold their mums as a model!

Fun on the PITCH
Teams buzzing with enthusiasm, co-ordinators geared up to begin a new era in cricket and spectators waiting to witness the event - the Chandigarh Champions League (CCL) is set to turn on the heat at the JR Sharma cricket stadium at Barwala, Haryana.
Now CCL is a day and night, tennis ball cricket championship where sports meet fun and the teams are divided into three pools. Each team will play three matches in their respective pools and based on their points will proceed to the knock-out stage. And what's best, there is no gender discrimination. As such no girls' team has made an inquiry this time, but there is a chance for all the girls because this tournament will take place every two to three months. Says, Saurav Talwar, organiser, "There is no discrimination; who knows we come up with an all-girls tournament the next time. He adds, "The spectators too can have all the fun and enjoy with a DJ present on the venue." The teams for the tournament, which would be held around the weekend, were formed on a first-come-first-served basis and the organisers left decisions like names, logos, uniforms, sponsors et al on the teams. And the team names are out-of-the-box as well - Anna XI, Blackhawks, Chandigarh Lions, Cyno XI, Peddlers, Punjab Pirates, Sancon Redbacks, Sharks, Sher-e-Jalandhar, Underdogz, Unicorns and Warriors. Bending the rules for some fun is in no way a crime! Shares Sunny Khullar, organiser, "Since our motto is to inject some fun into the game of cricket there are some changes in the rules such as there is no LBW. There is a power play for the first four overs." After such innovations, what does the future hold? "We aim to take CCL to new heights with each season through entertaining and novel ideas," smiles Ashish Dhillon, organiser. A huge trophy waiting for the winners, medals to them as well as runners up, cash prize of Rs 25, 000…who does not want to be part of such a fun event? As for the spectators, there is no entry fee and there is a grand post event party in waiting!

Bonding vs partying
A study has found that happy people who are less outgoing, relied less on partying and drinking to be happy and more on connections with family and friends or cognitive strategies, such as positive thinking. An Indiana University study compared strategies used by extroverted college students and their less socially inclined peers to reach to the conclusion.
"You don't have to go out and party to be happy. That's the thing students feel they need to do, particularly when they're new to campus," said Bernardo J. Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. "But, it's critical to maintain contacts with family, with friends and like-minded individuals with whom you feel some sort of meaningful connection. That could be other people in clubs that you belong to, like the accounting club, astronomy club . . . people you play intramural sports with," added
Carducci.
A second study, also conducted by Carducci, found that college students who are goal-oriented also tend to be happier than their less focused peers. "When you look at what these people do differently, people who strive to reach personal goals, they engage in more purposeful leisure, rather than sitting around and watching television," said Carducci.

Brand new Vidya, wicked and dirty!
The sensational promo of Ekta Kapoor's biopic on Silk Smitha, The Dirty Picture, was unveiled amidst much fanfare. The cast talks about their "dirty" adventure.
Vidya, tell us something about this picture. I think I have never enjoyed being a woman more than in The Dirty Picture. Here, the woman is like a rainbow and I got to play her in all her colours. It might be difficult to digest for some people but I am sure women will understand what I am saying. Vidya, how did you handle three different men of different ages? Ek se mera kya hoga! I don't want to say the typical things that I enjoyed working with them blah-blah. You will see that when you see the film. I have worked with Naseer saab before. It is an honour to be working with him. I am less nervous before him now. He is very encouraging without being blatant about it. I am very grateful to him for that. I used to wonder how it would be working with Emraan and I still wonder! (Laughs). Emraan didn't talk or laugh much initially. Now, it is the opposite. After seeing Silk, he can't keep his mouth shut! I had a lot of fun shooting with him. I had a lovely time shooting with Tusshar. I even convinced him to stay at Ramoji Rao Film City on the days he was not shooting. He is a very positive person to have around. He cracks jokes with a straight face. I don't know how Ekta and Milan thought of me for this film. I don't know how Rajat wrote the film. If I have done a good job, it is only because of them and their vision. I had complete faith in them. I held their hand and they held my hand and showed me the way. Hats off to Ekta for the kind of work she is doing. We both started with Hum Paanch and by God's grace and magnanimity, we have come a long way. Vidya, did you feel uncomfortable while shooting this film? I was not uncomfortable at all because I was in very able hands. I knew that I wouldn't look sleazy or ashleel at any point of time. Everything in the movie has been shot beautifully. Tusshar, how important is this film for you? The Dirty Picture is a turning point in my career. I had a superstition about holidays; that I would lose work by going on vacations. Last year, I was in Vegas and I received a call saying that Milan Sir wanted to meet me regarding The Dirty Picture. I was so excited because I have been a fan of his work and loved Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. So I went on a vacation and bagged this picture. I am excited about it and I love the reaction. We have a few days of shooting left and I will be pretty nervous now. It has been a joyride so far. Emraan, how dirty are you in The Dirty Picture? Until now, I thought I had done some of the wickedest and dirtiest things in my career but Vidya has taken the cake from me in this one. The film is important for me, of course. To quote Vidya's character Silk from the movie, she says, "Films sirf teen cheezein se chalti hai; entertainment, entertainment, entertainment." This film has that and more. You played a seductress in Ishqiya and are playing Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture. Silk was labelled a "soft-porn star." You think that will happen to you? I think I am an actor and I am only playing a character. I don't think I will be slotted as a soft-porn star. I just hope this film adds another shade to me as an actor. Emraan and Tusshar, you both are working with Naseeruddin Shah for the first time. How did that feel? Emraan: It was scary, intimidating, and I learnt a lot from him. He is very humble. Tusshar: Naseerbhai is younger at heart than Emraan and me. He is very boyish and that worked for us.

Back on track
Bipasha Basu has got her life back on track post her break-up with John Abraham. She does not want to talk about it. She is focussing on fitness (as usual) and on work and movies. The Bong bombshell talks about her upcoming movies and re-uniting with the Bhatt camp in Raaz 3. All work and no play….
Right now, I am only concentrating on my work. I want to do some good work and establish myself so that my audience gets to see a versatile actor in me. So I am looking at different kinds of scripts these days. I have had my share of rumours and gossip. I want people to talk about my work. Keen player of Players
One of the most interesting projects I have is Players with Abbas-Mustan. Players is an enjoyable thriller. Abbas-Mustan have always made something different and their movies are full of twists and turns! More than that, shooting for Players was so much fun because we travelled to so many places and the whole unit was very friendly. We all had fun and now that the shoot is over, I am actually missing them. The Bhatt camp
I don't know from where such rumours started that the Bhatts and I had fallen apart. I love the Bhatts and Mukesh Ji and Mahesh ji are still very close to me just as they were at the beginning of my career. They were just waiting to give me a good and strong role. It's not necessary that you meet a person everyday if you are friends with them. It's a big industry and people are busy but we have always remained in touch. Third time lucky
It was just that we were waiting for the right kind of role and the Bhatts did not want to disappoint me with something that was feeble. They wanted to give me a strong role. We got that in Raaz 3 and we are excited that we are all going to be working together. It's going to be different from Raaz and Raaz 2. Fida over Emraan!
I have seen Emraan's work and he is a great actor. I was totally fida over his acting in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai.

Imran: I didn't own a TV until recently
Imran Khan is known as one of the coolest new actors. He has his head on his shoulders and is very secure about himself. Aamir Khan's good-looking nephew talks about buddy Ranbir, television, comedy, and more. Ranbir and me
Ranbir and I are friends. We do not compete with each other. We talk every now and then and see each other's movies. He is a born star and actor. Yes, the media writes stories about us but they are not true. I read the stories, call him, and we clarify things between us. He also calls me up to clarify things. Everything is cool between us. We do not react to the stories because a reaction only leads to more such gossip. We both have hosted Filmfare together twice and let me tell you that Filmfare got the highest TRPs when we hosted it. I am the last one to know of any gossip. No television buff
Believe it or not, I hate television. I didn't own a television until recently. We got one because Avantika likes to watch television. I don't endorse too many brands because I don't like commercials telling me what to do. I am happy that the brands I endorse have made good and different commercials. In commercials, I have a silly fear that the actor will come out of the screen and that scares me! (Laughs) I love watching movies and I have a Mac with a big screen and good speakers so that is where I watched movies until recently. Poker face
I have a straight-face sense of humour. That is the kind of humour I like. You can say something and it will be a while before people get it. I love funny movies and A Fish Called Wanda is easily the funniest movie I have ever seen. I think slapstick comedy is good if done correctly and it is very difficult to do it correctly. I wouldn't mind trying that genre.

Feeling sorry
Hollywood icon Raquel Welch says she feels sorry for Lindsay Lohan because it always seems to be an "open season" to criticise her. The 70-year-old Hollywood icon accepts the Mean Girls star - who has been to rehab several times and had numerous run-ins with the police - has many self-made problems but says it's about time she was given a break from the relentless interest in her personal life, reported a website.
"I'm the antidote to Lindsay Lohan. I know she misbehaves terribly, but sometimes it just seems like it's open season on her," she said. Welch, who was catapulted to fame at the age of 26 when she played a fur bikini wearing cave-girl in 1966 film One Million Years BC said that the pressure of making it in Hollywood is the reason why young actors go off the
rails.” — PTI

Be happy
Daljit Bhanot, the cute and beautiful Anjali from Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, is one actress who is always giggly and cheerful even after a tiring shoot. We find how Daljit always manages to be happy and stress free. Check out Daljit's stress busters.
Current affairs I am currently 10 minutes late for the shoot of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon and that is stressing me out. The traffic and the rain are horrible today. I hate being late and just hope that I reach the sets soon. Supportive spouse My husband Shaleen is my biggest stress buster. There can be nothing better than going home and seeing his face after a tiring day of shooting for my show. Just talking to him and cribbing about how bad my day was or how good it was, makes me feel happy. He pampers me so much that he has me giggling even when I am tired. There is a joke in the family that normally girls become aunties after marriage but Shaleen has made me 10 years younger. I am looking younger and also slimmer now. I am much more active than I ever was and it is all thanks to Shaleen's motivation. He is such a charmer I tell you. Home bound I am not very outgoing and would rather spend time at home. I love the cozy feeling of my home. The minute I enter my home I feel safe and secure and of course nothing beats spending time with family. Comic relief I enjoy watching animation even though Shaleen is not too fond of this habit of mine. I can watch anything from The Simpsons to Family Guy and others. I wouldn't mind if someone shut me in a room filled with animation CD's, I can keep watching them all day. Two right feet I don't find too much time to dance thanks to my shooting schedule but whenever I get the opportunity I jump to it. Recently, Shaleen and I performed together for a TV show and I was happy doing it. I did not get much time to rehearse but dancing relieved me of all my stress. Art attack I can't claim to be MF Hussein but yes, I do enjoy painting. My painting is more like scribbling on the canvas (laughs). It's enough if people are able to recognise what I have painted but it makes me happy when they say that I have done a good job. Kitchen queen I enjoy cooking and would love to spend more time in the kitchen. Experimenting in the kitchen is another one of my favourite pastimes even though Shaleen does not like me spending too much time in the kitchen/ Actually he hardly allows me to cook.
