One gets life term

District and Sessions Judge Manjit Singh yesterday awarded life imprisonment to Amit, a resident of Sector 27, Chandigarh, for murdering Daria village resident Maan Singh. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on the accused.

On August 24, the court had convicted Amit while acquitting four others. On February 15 last year, the police had found the body of Maan Singh on the Saketri road near Mansa Devi Complex. According to the police, the murder was a fallout of a dispute over the possession of a house where Maan Singh used to stay. It was on the night of February 14 last year when the accused took him in a car and killed him. Later, the body was dumped in a pit on the Saketri road.

3 murder accused acquitted

Panchkula, August 27
District and Sessions Judge Manjit Singh today acquitted three persons from the murder charges in a case that dates back to March last year.

The court acquitted Ganga Ram, Ram Avatar, alias Nanku, and Ram Avatar, alias Ramu, all residents of Rally village, Sector 12-A, Panchkula.

According to prosecution, the trio had killed Dhansu, a rickshaw puller, on the night of March 16 last year. The main accused, Ganga Ram, had borrowed Rs 1,600 from Dhansu. On March 16, Ganga Ram along with two others first consumed alcohol with Dhansu and later allegedly killed him with sticks.

After killing him, they dumped his body in a park in Sector 20. Later, cops had arrested the accused and recovered the sticks and blood stained clothes.

Defence counsel Mukesh Kumar said the blood group of the deceased was different from the blood group found on the blood stained clothes, which ultimately helped in the acquittal. He added that apart from this there was no evidence against the accused.

Challan book of SI stolen
Departmental inquiry ordered

Chandigarh, August 27
A Sub Inspector with the UT police became a victim of theft after his scooter was stolen along with his challan book. Sub Inspector Desh Raj Singh, who is presently posted at the Sector 39 police station, reported to the police that his scooter was stolen from Sector 37 four days ago. He informed about the lost challan book only when he was questioned about it by his seniors.

He told the police that his challan book had also been stolen along with his vehicle. Vijay Kumar, DSP (Traffic), has ordered a departmental inquiry against the SI for his negligence. SHO of Sector 39 police station, said the traffic challan book was issued to Desh Raj one-and-half months ago. When questioned by senior police officers for his negligence, the SI replied that he was busy in the security arrangements for Janamashatmi on August 22 when his scooter was stolen. — TNS

2 thefts, snatchings reported

Two thefts and snatchings were reported in the city in the last 24 hours. In two separate incidents a gold chain and a purse was snatched by the miscreants.

Kamlesh Kumari, resident of Sector 34-C, alleged that two unknown occupants of motorcycle bearing number 5234 snatched away her gold chain. She added that the incident occurred near her residence.

Rajiv Kumar of Dhanas, alleged that unknown person ran away after snatching his wife’s purse containing cash Rs 5,000, mobile phone and a silver anklet. He said the theft occurred near Sector 25 and 38 lightpoint. The police has registered separate cases.

Gaurav Goel, a resident of Sector 48, reported that some one had stolen a bag containing cash Rs 80,000, bank cheques, and some documents from his car number CH-01AD-0016. The car was stolen from Sofrito Restaurant in Sector 9. In another incident, Rohit Jindal a resident of Sector 15, reported that some one had stolen six gas cylinders from outside his residence on Friday. A case under sections 380 and 457 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 11 police station.

Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Ramdarbar, alleged that a person, Kalu, along with others robbed him of cash Rs 10,000 in Ramdarbar. Sanjay was injured as he tried to resist the robbers who took away his money. He was admitted to the GMCH-32.

Three-year-old girl kidnapped, freed

Zirakpur, August 27
Sonu, a three-year-old girl, was allegedly kidnapped by a migrant labourer today, and was recovered by the Zirakpur Police within 45 minutes of the incident from Anand Vihar, Baltana.

Acting on the complaint of the victim’s grandfather, the police swung into action and arrested Rob Singh, hailing from UP. The police said the girl was kidnapped for ransom. Earlier, the accused was working as a labourer during the construction of the victim’s house, the police added.

A police official stated that in his statement Raje Singh, grandfather of the victim, said his granddaughter was playing outside the house in the afternoon where the accused abducted her on his motorcycle.

The complainant said he tried to chase the accused, but he fled towards Peer Baba road at Baltana. He immediately informed the police about the incident.

A police team, led by Harbinder Singh, officiating Baltana chowki in charge, cordoned off the area according the complainant’s statement.

During the search operation the police found the girl sitting in an under-construction house at Anand Vihar and rescued her.

The police official said after getting a tip-off about the accused, the police raided the under-construction building at Ekta Vihar where they arrested Rob Singh.

In the preliminary investigation, accused Rob Singh had confessed to his crime and told the police that he had kidnapped the girl for money. The accused said he had abducted the girl from the vicinity of the house and left her at his relative’s house in Anand Vihar. He also told his relatives that the girl’s father would come to pick her up. Later, he returned to his work.

The police official stated that the accused was arrested and a case has been registered against him. He would be produced in the court tomorrow.

Police arrests ‘don’ from Delhi

A day after The Tribune reported that a ‘don’ had threatened the Class XI student of Delhi, who was allegedly gangraped in Sector 20, Panchkula, and at the Ridge View Hotel in Shimla, finally the Panchkula Police today arrested a Delhi-based “crime boss”.

The police has arrested Virender Khanna, who had made phone calls to the victim telling her if she did not “assist” the accused he would kill her mother who lived in Delhi.

The police said Virender Khanna was a supplier of girls in Delhi and was involved in number of criminal activities. On August 21 the victim, a resident of Arjun Nagar in Delhi, was accompanied by a youth, Rakesh, to Panchkula. The latter had allegedly promised her family that he would help her in enrolling in an airhostess course in Chandigarh.

On August 22 the two arrived at GH 79, a housing society in Panchkula, where Rakesh allegedly raped the girl. In the evening they left for Shimla along with three others. During their stay at a hotel in Shimla she was again allegedly raped by the accused.

The victim told the police that the accused had taken Rs 15,000 from two people, Dinesh and Gandhi. After consuming liquor, both had raped her in the hotel room in Shimla. On August 23 she was brought back to Sector 20, Panchkula. According to the police, she insisted on returning home, but accused Rakesh, Uttam, Pankaj and Uma Koirala did not allow her to do so. She began shouting, which drew attention of neighbours who called up the police.

With the arrest of Khanna, the police had arrested five accused in this case. However, Dinesh and Gandhi were still at large.

Meanwhile, the Panchkula Police produced Khanna before a local court today that sent him to police remand till August 31.

Farheen, Tuba and Manu Gupta won top honours during the 14th St Stephen’s Ranking Carrom Tournament being held at St Stephen’s School here today.

In the women’s singles category, the trio secured maximum points to attain first three ranks. In the men’s singles category, Mohd Hassan, Gagandeep Singh and Mohd Talib secured the top three positions.

Ranking:

Men’s singles: Mohd Hassan, Gagandeep Singh, Mohd Talib, Shaquib, Raj Kumar, Aarish, Abhinandan, Didar Singh.

Surjit academy pocket hockey title

Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, defeated Shivalik Public School, Mohali, to lift the title of 10th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial Hockey Tournament for Boys’ (U-14) being held at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.

In the final match of the competition, Surjit academy thrashed Shivalik school 3-1. Inderjeet of Surjit academy drew the first blood in the 10th minute of the game, while Sanjod Singh levelled the score for Shivalik Public School in the 38th minute of the game.

After the breather, Kuwardilraj Singh gave the lead to the visitors by converting the awarded penalty corner to second goal in the 45th minute of the game and Shamsher sealed the team’s victory after striking the wooden plank in the 53rd minute of the game.

JS Nakai, MLA, gave away prizes to the winners. The Jalandhar outfit was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 20,000, while Shivalik Public School was awarded Rs 15,000.

Parampreet Singh of Surjit academy, Jalandhar, and Pardeep Singh of Surjit academy were adjudged the best goalkeeper and best half back, respectively, while Jagjeet Singh of Shivalik school declared as the best full back.

Gurpiyar Singh Mehta of Gurukul Academy bagged the best forward award, while Bombay Hockey XI team was awarded with the fair play trophy.

Sunil, Mahip hit bull’s eye

Sunil Chaudhary and Mahip Gill won top honours in the air pistol men (ISSF) event during the ongoing 36th Chandigarh State Rifle Shooting Championship being held here today.

The shooters scored 374 points, out of 400 points, while in the .22 rifle men (senior) category Bhagwant Singh scored 542 points, out of 600 to finish first in the tournament.

In the air pistol youth NR (women), Nina Chandel scored 360 points to finish first, while in the 25m sports pistol (women) category, Nanaki Singh bagged the top spot after scoring 235 points.

In the 25m standard pistol men (senior) category, Holinder Singh won the first place with 271 points.

Dhruvika hogs limelight in sqay meet

Dhruvika Tiwari of Carmel Convent School bagged a gold medal during the Inter-School Sqay Championship for Girls (U-17) being held at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here.

Dhruvika also booked her place in the upcoming National Games, whereas her counterparts, Stuti, Aradhika Jain and Garima bagged silver medals in the girls’ U-14 category. — TNS
