Cat and muse
There is nothing 'super' about superstitions. What could possibly be good about having to step back and start all over again if someone makes the mistake of calling out your name exactly at the moment you decided to go out of your home, or screeching the car to a stop if a stray kitten — black or grey — crosses the road? Nothing at all!
But then, there is no escaping them either. Crows may have done a disappearing act from the cityscape, but one would still think of it as an indicator of guests coming unannounced. Such is the deep-rooted belief. Or, why would a corporate giant like Cadbury come up with an ad Kutch meetha ho jaye for a shubharambh (auspicious beginning)? And if anything - logical or illogical - becomes so much a part of life, it is inevitable to get expressed in creative ways. If Cadbury Dairy Milk ad is one of expressing it, then bringing these superstitions on to the canvas as an artistic muse is another. So, when we saw Satwant Singh and his mystic series with lots of animal motifs, we knew we were not wide of the mark when we made the statement that even illogical things could become an artist's muse. "I draw inspiration from mythology, superstitions and folktales," says Satwant Singh, as he explains his two paintings, one with an owl as the carrier of bad news and another one on sacrifice. You ask him why and he plunges into a monologue, "Superstitions are age-old narrative stylisation of our beliefs embedded in the soil of anthropological evolution, and artists find them convenient as well as exciting to use in paintings to visually narrate a thought, which is subconsciously etched in our minds. I also believe that one man's mythology is another man's reality. The elements that centre around superstitions or mythology give a mysterious touch to a painting. In fact, any animal and bird associated with any superstition excites my artistic sensibility. By using animals like black goat, black cats, black roosters, ravines and snakes, it is easier for me to demystify the supernatural." It may take a little time to absorb Satwant Singh's penchant for superstitious objects, but he is not alone in this. Franscico Goya's Witches' Sabbath is one name that keeps cropping up whenever we broach the subjects with our artist folks. Witches' Sabbath was painted at a time when superstition was widespread in Spain and many rural peasants were susceptible to propaganda tales of secret societies, corrupted women and perverted religion. Goya completed the painting while living alone in mental and physical despair at the age of 75, as one of the 14 so-called Black Paintings executed in oil directly onto the plaster walls of his house. Goya did not intend for any of these paintings to be exhibited, did not write of them, and likely never spoke of them. In the contemporary scene, Ganesh Pyne is another name that is most associated with death and superstition. "Painting death is a very personal affair and it comes only when one faces such a tragedy," says Madan Lal, who painted death-related superstitions in one of his paintings, which now belongs to the collection of the State Bank of India. Madan focused on the ritual of putting four nails with white thread connecting them in the form of a 'manji' which symbolises 'life after death' and is meant for the rest of the departed soul. And that painting soon led to his famous series Life after Death. City-based artist Anjali Aggarwal has an interesting observation on superstition and people's insensitivity. In her drawing Are You The Prey? more than the black cat, it is the darker side of human nature that comes to the fore. In her own words: "My painting denotes the behavioural aspect of a human mind when it comes to superstitions. However, I was amazed at our insensitivity as humans - if a black cat does cross our way, we allow someone else to cross the road first so that bad luck strikes him! Different takes for different people; for Malkit Singh, another city-based artist, it was the need to exorcise his fears of spirit that gave birth to his painting, Hallucination. "I kept having this nightmare of some spirit chasing me. So I thought of painting it and bringing it out of my psyche and on to the canvas…and it worked. Soon, I got rid of my fears," he says. It worked for his painting too, which now adorns the wall of a well-known collector in the city. It goes to prove that one man's belief is another man's muse! parbina@tribunemail.com

DRESSING the bride
The wait was not very comfortable. The anxiety rose and a tad bit later, we came face-to-face with bridal couture and the jewellery collection slated for the upcoming Wedding Asia. Very vocal about the royal touch, the collection was loyal to its theme — Seher.
A sneak peak in the true sense of the word, the four elaborately done outfits spoke at length about the inspiration, which has been guiding the designer. Between the music playing a spoilsport, the designer finally stepped up — Amit Talwar. A pass-out of NIFD, Delhi, and looking nothing less than a model himself, he shares his thoughts on his sparkles and shimmers. Just in case you are the going to be the blushing bride and await a monsoon wedding, read on! His models present very intricate embroideries done in swarovski. "Yes, in the coming wedding season, zardozi will be very much in. Since it tends to become a bit dull, swarovski can be used as a highlighter," he shares. One significant aspect of his clothing range is the hangings. "They do up the outfit," he smiles. With the wedding industry booming in India, his suggestions are clear cut. "Long jackets and floor-length anarkalis will be the flavour of the bridal season," he says. His work is very reflective of his thoughts on the fabric. The showcase included velvets, brocades, nets and georgettes along with a stunning display of jewellery in its most experimental form. "It will be an interesting blend of traditional and vintage along with a tinge of the 21st century," he puts it in simple terms. With the entire focus of the fashion industry resting on the overpriced and one-time-wear bridal couture, Amit's views do not vary much. "Bridal dresses are very much an inherent part of our tradition. There is just no way a gown or dress will ever replace the magic of a bride dressed in a heavy lehenga," he says. Thoughts flutter as he speaks about how the girls dream about the perfect wedding lehenga. But yes, he is aware of the experimentation people are finally looking at. "Everyone wants to wear something different, that's why, I have come up with a huge range of pre-tied saris and narrow drapes," he shares. Another hot trend: "Has to be short cholis and deep-cut blouses," he shares. Going back to the collection, the plunging necklines and the thin straps at the back reinforce his views. With five years behind him, he claims of having had no problems in the ever-growing fashion industry, which regularly goes gaga over the countless fashion weeks. "If creativity has no limits, why should fashion weeks? They are ultimately one great platform for designers to learn," he shares. So, if his pink fish-cut lehenga is what you have been lusting for, watch out for his entire range at the Wedding Asia, 2011, coming soon at Taj. vasudha@tribunemail.com

Believe it or not!

Work wise
Economic independence is the yardstick of emancipation, if girls from Ludhiana city are to be believed. "When you're economically independent, you have the decision-making power. At least your voice is heard, if not heeded to," says 20-year-old Garima Pruthi.
Stay-at-home mothers may be doing their best for the family, yet they have to play a second fiddle when it comes to core issues, she adds. Our society may eulogise women who take a sabbatical from their career to look after their family, but at the end of the day they are practically marooned in the no-job zone, says 25-year-old Sangeeta Sharma. "Women in the western world are exploring the option of staying at home - cooking, cleaning, baking and most importantly, doing backyard agriculture to feed their family. It's like taking on the role of Annapurna. With so much time and money being spent on buying organic food, isn't this a viable option? But how many Indian women would be willing to experiment with this? And how many would be allowed to?" Women who are economically independent are a happier lot. That's the take of Radhika Sharma, a student of Guru Nanak Institute of Design and Technology in Ludhiana. "If your talent remains unutilised, you get the feeling of being shortchanged. Bitterness creeps in and it's not one of the best arrangements for the family," she says. Economic dependence on the man of the house reduces women to mere appendages, avers Karamjit Kaur, a college student. "Being economically independent is fine if you are comfortable with it, but so is economic dependence if it does not bother you. It's all a matter of choice," quips Prabhjot Kaur, who's doing post-graduation in fashion design. It's less a gender issue and more a matter of individual preference, adds Ludhiana-based Jasmeet Kaur Chawla.

Being different
Style and haute couture will always be something which will be noticed and warrant a second glance. When it has an individualistic touch, it becomes the insignia style of the person which makes him/her stand out. Debonair model in the fashion and commercial world, Sayush S Nayyar shares his views Your sense of style… I feel style is what makes a trend-setter and at the end of the day it is all a matter of being different and projecting one's own persona. Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories… My denims from Calvin Klein which are a dream fit. Brand crazy or street pick ups? I can pick up from anywhere and feel comfortable provided the fit is right and appropriate. My style icon would be… John Abraham was high on my list but recently the focus has shifted to Ranbir Kapoor and Hritik Roshan. Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity? Chunky Pandey with his floral and loud dressing all the time. Which look would your prefer - sporty, chic or glamorous? My aim is to become the glamorous icon but for now I will settle for 'chic'. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… Attire which is too outlandish on the ramp and bell bottom trousers and baggy clothes do not gel with my sense of dressing at all. Your take on accessories… A good belt and my glares are very important to me What gives you a high on the confidence Level? Appreciation for my work. Recently I did a commercial and even my parents quite liked it. That did make me feel exceptionally good! (As told to Poonam Bindra) |

Double standards
Couples with different body temperatures often squabble over bed covers leading to duvet wars, but now a newly designed quilt has promised to put an end to these wars for good. Bedding experts have created a split-warmth quilt, which is thicker on one side than the other.
The TwoTog, which is made in a Lancashire mill for John Lewis, is believed to be the first in which the quilt comes in one piece.
It means cold-blooded people can snuggle down under the thicker side, while their hot-blooded partners, who regularly throw off the covers, can choose the lighter option. “Sharing a bed is considered to be the norm in Western society and good for relationships and good for intimacy, but it is not necessarily good for sleep,” Jessica Alexander, of the Sleep Council, said. “Everybody has different body temperatures and clothing requirements and so sharing a bed can be quite a challenge. “Particularly as most double beds are 4ft 6in in width - or 2ft 3in each - which is somewhat less than the width of a baby’s cot,” she added. Almost half of those questioned by the Sleep Council said they were woken up six times a night by their partners. Snoring topped the list of complaints but “hogging the bed clothes” came a close second. The TwoTog duvets are filled with Hungarian goose down and are available in summer and winter versions with prices starting at 140 pounds. —ANI

OMG, here's a new word
OMG - short for 'oh my God' - has joined a whole raft of 'new' words said to be
reflective of modern Britain to become immortalised in the latest edition of the
Chambers Dictionary. 'OMG' is derived from text-speak but actually involves the
same number of syllables to say out loud as the original version.
In a move, which may horrify traditionalists, the century-old reference guide has also adopted 'BFF', a term popularised by celebrity heiress Paris Hilton meaning 'best friend forever'. A quarter of the new words are derived from the Internet - while others come from street slang, rap music and text speak. Among the other gems to be found in its 12th edition are 'jeggings', a hybrid of jeans and leggings, and 'skank' - a rather impolite way of describing a loose woman. And those bored of using the word 'mates' might consider 'bromance', the new trendy way of referring to friendship between men. Editors
believe the new word list provides a vivid portrait of the English
language today - an assertion that may cause alarm to some. — ANI

Like poles attract
It's well known that adventurous women are more likely to choose partners who have similar personalities, irrespective of their appearance. Now, a study by researchers at the University of Exeter and the Royal Veterinary College has shown that the same can be said of birds.
The researchers found that adventurous female zebra finches were more likely to favour the most apparently outgoing and confident males, and seemed less impressed by the prospective partner's body size, condition or beak colour. The study is the first to show that non-sexual behaviour or personality traits play a role in the choice of partner in animals other than humans. The researchers conducted a series of behavioural tests on more than 150 birds, assessing males and females separately for personality traits. Each female bird was then allowed to watch a pair of brothers exploring strange cages, unaware that one was being held back by an invisible box. When the birds were put together, the more adventurous females tend to prefer the most out-going and confident males. On the other hand, less exploratory females did not show a preference for either male. "This is strong evidence that females care about the apparent personality of their male independently of his appearance. We have the first evidence that it is important for partners to have compatible personalities in the mating game. This is something we would probably all agree is the case for humans but which has been overlooked for other species," said team leader Dr Sasha Dall of the University of Exeter.— ANI

It's magical
The Choomantar song has introduced the magical quotient to the film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. The peppy track that shows the lead pair, Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif having fun on the Delhi roads, has become a huge hit already. Besides its music, the USP of the song is the chemistry between the actors that has come to fore after the video was released. The actors' fans love the song. Fun track Aditi Sharma is the singer who has done the playback singing for the song. She is the same singer who earlier delivered the hit Aali Re in the movie, No One Killed Jessica. Choomantar is an equally fun track. The remix of the song is even better. The music mix is interesting and fresh for sure. Ria Sharma, student Catchy tune The song does not strike as the 'hit the dance floor' kind when you hear it for the first time, but it grows on you. It's a fun song. Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan are looking great, especially when they are shot in an auto-rickshaw. The Delhi backdrop adds to the fun element. The song has a catchy tune and music director, Sohail Sen has done a fantastic job. Himanshi Garg, student Not meant for dance floor Singers Benny Dayal and Aditi Singh have done a great job. The title of the song Choomantar is unusual, so are the lyrics. It begins with slow beats but gradually picks up the pace, but still, the song is not meant for dance parties. But more than anything else, Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan have added the fun element to the song. Sohail Sen shows his versatility once again. Neha Gupta, BPO employee As told to Ashima Sehajpal |

Green top
Sukhmani In today's modern fast paced cities, where there is more concrete than greenery, where there are more buildings than gardens, a terrace garden is an ideal concept to connect with nature. These can be created anywhere and here are a few tips to help you create your own green haven. Have experts examine your roof for its strength and make sure it can hold your garden. Waterproof your roof well. You can use thermoplastic sheeting or rubberised asphalt and always give a slope for drainage. Place burned bricks of 3"-4" on the terrace to facilitate drainage. You can also use corrugated sheets at a distance of 3' to allow water to flow into the drain. If your terrace is bigger than 500 sq ft. Make arrangements for more drainage outlets. Place a wire mesh over the bricks to prevent soil from getting into the gaps. Use peat moss or soil mixed with peat moss, garden soil and manure. Select plants with fibrous roots instead of tap roots as tap roots may grow through the building. Balance your layout with lawns, hardscapes, water features, gazebos, shrubs, ground covers, trees and other garden accessories. Use lighting in a way that is soft yet highlights the key features of your garden. Make sure there is a water source to water your plants and lawn. Use light weight planters and furniture to avoid too much weight on the roof. Apart from its aesthetic value, terrace gardens are also eco friendly. They can sound proof your roof and protect it from UV rays. It insulates the house during the winter and reduces air conditioning costs by 25 per cent to 50 per cent during the summer. Fashion & divas
Fair and flawless (1)
Sridevi: How does she manage to look this good when she is nearing 50? She is a sight to behold. Her saree is simple and elegant and we love the way she has draped it. There isn't a flaw to pick.
Way off (2) Katrina Kaif: She looks gorgeous as usual but why is she drowning in yards of fabric? Something about the Indian gown doesn't really click. Something’s wrong with her.
Black magic (3) Deepika Padukone: She knows how to wear black! The leggy lass has dressed up in the most casual pieces available and jazzed up her look with a statement necklace and sling purse.
Neat and chic (4) Karisma Kapur: How flawless she looks! She is impeccably dressed in a ruffled white shirt paired with classic denims. Black peep-toes, a trendy bag, and simple make-up complete her day look.
Quite a steal (5) Kalki Koechlin: We love the way she has fun with her clothes. Her sequined top is bright and multi-hued. The dark blue leggings and plain sandals let the top steal the show. — HRM

It's Kareena all the way
Kareena Kapoor is at the top of her game. Recently, she was the gorgeous showstopper for Manish Malhotra's grand finale. The stunner has five big releases lined up with all the prominent Khans of Bollywood and she is finally doing Heroine. The firebrand talks about her life and movies. Manish Malhotra; Can you say a few words for him? He is a magical man. When he sees a woman, he knows which dress will fit her and suit her. He is very particular about what he wants. He is a very dear friend who has always been there whenever I have needed him. So finally Heroine was meant for you only? (Smiles) Yeah! It seems like that but it's too early to talk about it because we are still finalising everything. Madhur is a bold and a different director and the film will have lot of glamour, fashion, and sensationalism too. Being an actor, I love doing different roles and I have been doing them since my early days. What made you sign Bodyguard? It's a film with a soul. It's a sweet love story. If you remove the girl from the film, there is no story. I don't sign films without my character being strong. When Salman Khan watched the South version he told the producer (Atul Agnihotri) that only Kareena will fit the role. Everyday there is a new story about your relationship, how do you feel when you read them? Firstly, I don't read them at all. I don't read newspapers because most of them are sourced stories. Saif and I are very much together and in love but I don't think I need to tell anyone else about my relationship, what's happening in our lives, and what's not. Which films are on the anvil? Bodyguard , Agent Vinod, Ra.One, Reema Katgi's film with Aamir Khan, and Dharma's film with Imran Khan. The latter films are not titled yet. I also have Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. — HRM |

Second time lucky too
Pakistani pop sensation Ali Zafar impressed everyone with his entertaining performance in Tere Bin Laden. The singer-actor-lyricist-composer is all set for his second release, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan with Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan. The multi-talented actor talks about his second movie and working with YRF.
Surprise surprise When I got a call from Yash Raj saying that Aditya Chopra wanted to meet me, I was shocked. I was, like, are you sure? Getting an offer from Yash Raj is not a small thing. The script was superb and it has some surprise elements. On Mere Brother Ki Dulhan My character wants to get married and he sends out his brother to look for the right girl. The surprise element is revealed in the latter half of the film. The film is for masses and is not a niche film. YRF has planned a premiere in Dubai. This will help us reach even wider audience as Bollywood films are loved all over the world and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is a unique film with a comic touch. It's a family film. B for Bollywood I never expected to receive such an overwhelming response from Bollywood after my first film but the way doors have opened for me is great. Many directors had called me to wish after watching Tere Bin Laden and many offered me films too. Bollywood makes movies for both classes and the masses and is constantly evolving. Co-stars and chemistry I was very excited to work with Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif as they are big Bollywood names. When we met on the first day of shooting, I was overwhelmed by their behaviour as they were totally down to earth and always interested in learning something new. Katrina is the most hard-working actor I have seen as she wants to give her 100 per cent to every film and every scene. Imran is born to be an actor and he is very kind and humble. London, Paris, New York… Yes, I have signed a new film which will be my third Bollywood film and it's called London, Paris, New York. It is directed by Anu Menon, produced by Rose Movies. Aditi Rao Hydari has been paired opposite me in the film. It's a witty romantic film. Apart from acting I will do the music and lyrics too. —HRM
