Woman injured in Acid attack
Jalandhar, August 22 “There were groping eyes all around. People watched me as if they were watching a TV serial. But no one offered me a vehicle for being taken to the nearby Devi Talab Hospital. Thankfully, there was a woman of my age coming out of Nokia showroom there who finally flagged down a rickshaw and took me to the hospital. But the painful ordeal just did not end there. The doctors refused to take me in or even give the necessary first aid. I was instead referred to the Civil Hospital. The staff, however, called the PCR cops who arranged for an ambulance and got me here,” the victim narrated her woes through her nose mask. Levelling allegations against her husband Ashok Kumar of Tanda, she said he was riding pillion on a motorcycle when he committed the crime. “I had no idea of what he was up to. All I knew was that I did not want to have an eye contact with her and I had kept my face down. He just came and splashed acid on me,” she managed to save her face but had burns on her neck, ears, chest, upper arms and upper thighs. Archana’s mother Shashi Bala gave the background, “Our daughter used to have a spat with our son-in-law. We got her back some two and a half years back. She had even filed a divorce case and the judgement is about to come. But intermittently, he had been harassing her mentally over the phone. He just keeps on calling her every now and then. He was pestering her through her two children --- a 15-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son (both with father) --- to come back, which she had been constantly refusing. Unfortunately, he vent his ire this way.” Victim’s father Rajinder Kumar, a resident of Pathankot Chowk here, said her daughter was out for work this morning when the incident occurred. “She had got the job of doing readership survey for a vernacular daily”, he revealed. The victim herself added on, “I wanted to have some peaceful moments in the compound of Devi Talab Mandir towards which I had been heading. My husband had been calling me since morning and had disturbed my mental peace. In fact, he had been calling me, had got the clue that I was near this point and tracked me down with bad intention.” Dr Satinder Jit Singh Bajaj, general surgeon, Civil Hospital, said Archana had 28 per cent burns. “She is stable but we will keep a watch on her for the next 72 hours, ” he observed. Meanwhile, the police has registered a case against her husband under Section 307 of the IPC. The accused is still at large. Painful story

In the public notice, the Army said since key military installations were situated on the Mall Road, it had to be closed. Though the Army had sought objections and suggestions from the residents but the issue was not settled. The residents had taken to streets and had also filed a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the Army closing the road for public. The cantonment residents maintained that although the Army cited security factor as one of the major reasons for the closure but it was actually meant to stop civilians from roaming there. |
Shoddy Sports College infrastructure
Jalandhar, August 22 While the existing hostel of the college was abandoned around 10 years ago after it was declared ‘unsafe’ by the PWD, the players are now staying in a single lane of dingy rooms on an extreme side of the Gymnastic Hall of the college for the past three years. Surprisingly, some of the players kept on staying in the ‘unsafe’ hostel building till last year as there was no designated hostel for them. The condition of the hostel is so appalling, that right from its entrance all that meets the eye is a narrow shabby corridor with litter strewn everywhere, filthy washrooms, leaking roofs, no proper electricity connection, dingy rooms without any ventilation and stench emanating from every nook and corner. So much so, that it must have been months since the hostel premises would have been cleaned properly. Talking to The Jalandhar Tribune, the inmates of the makeshift hostel said, “Usually on Sundays we clean the hostel and at times even our respective coaches also help us in cleaning the premises. Just recently we spent a lot of time in weeding out wild grass which had grown on the terrace of our hostel. But since there is no upkeep of this hostel, even we have become used to staying here like this.” At present 30 budding players (19 to 22 years age group) pursuing gymnastics, volleyball and athletics from across the state are staying in the hostel. And almost all of them come from very humble backgrounds. “There is no option and moreover, we cannot afford costly education in private colleges of the state. It has been years since we have been putting up in such poor conditions,” said another student. Moreover, this makeshift hostel faces the unsafe building of the old hostel, which is nothing short of a haunted house with huge wild growth surrounding it. “As it is rainy season, insects, rats and cats easily come inside our rooms. But, then we are getting free education for peanuts and one can just expect this much,” said a student laughing it off. The players also added that recently they had a tough time during continuous rains. All the students were forced to stay awake as the roof kept leaking. “We ended up keeping buckets and mugs and changing directions of our beds throughout the night,” highlighted another student. As if this was not enough, the sports college has no separate mess for its hostelers. This despite the fact, that towards the end of this hostel, there is an abandoned kitchen which is lying unused since ages. “We are availing the services of Government Sports School Hostel which provides us good food,” they quipped. Kundi Connection
In the absence of any proper legal electricity connection, players are forced to use ‘kundi connections’. Even the electricity wires hang loosely at almost every part of this single lane dingy hostel. “What can we do? It is peak summers and one cannot manage without electricity. We are forced to use kundi connection,” remarked a
student. About the college
Government Arts and Sports College, Jalandhar, the only institution of its kind in Asia, was founded in 1961 as State College of Sports with the initiative of then Chief Minister Pratap Singh Kairon. This institution was established with the objective to churn out the best

Women up in arms against price rise
Jalandhar, August 22 They also handed over a memorandum of demands to Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti to be forwarded to the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The women also raised slogans against the alleged double standards adopted by the government and said on the one hand they extend their support to Anna Hazare for the Jan Lokpal Bill over the issue of corruption but on the other hand it has failed to work for the welfare for the poor. Jasbir Jassi, a representative of the Manch said, “It has become difficult for the poor to survive as the prices of essential commodities like flour, oil, sugar, kerosene and vegetables have gone sky high. Even the Atta-Dal scheme and other welfare schemes launched by the state government have proved to be hollow.” The members also alleged that the state government tries to stop them if they try to raise their voice against injustice. “There have been instances when various union members have even been lathicharged for
trying to highlight the failure of the state government but all they get in return is assurances. Despite such tactics adopted by the government, we will continue our struggle,” she added. |

Four-nation hockey championship postponed
Jalandhar, August 22 The Rs 1-crore prize money tournament was scheduled to be held from September 22 to October 5. This despite the fact that the sports department had recently declared that decks had been cleared for the tournament and that it would be held in September. Leading international hockey teams Argentina, Pakistan and India had already given their consent for the tournament. However, last-minute refusal of the New Zealand Hockey team owing to their busy schedule brought the entire show to a halt. In Jalandhar, this tournament was scheduled to be held at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park, which had received a major fillip in 2009, because of this mega international tournament. Amritsar, Mohali and Bathinda were scheduled to host other games for the tournament. Director Sports, Punjab, Pargat Singh said, “Yes the tournament has been postponed as the New Zealand team has pulled out of the event. We had done all the preparations for this tournament, when it had to be called off.” He said we have written to the three guest teams once again and seek their consent. “As this is an international level tournament we want that best teams of the world should take part. We are now planning fresh dates for the tournament and have decided to invite either Holland or New Zealand as the fourth team, whichever team agrees to take part,” he added. Sources say the last minute change has affected the morale of the three teams, especially the Pakistan hockey team. The Pakistan team was eagerly looking forward to this international tournament in India and that too in Punjab. Sources said the sports department could have gone ahead with any other international hockey team but as this was an international-level tournament, they wanted to make it a big success. “We didn’t want to invite a weak team for this tournament. Hockey lovers will get to see the best action ever once the tournament gets underway,” he said. |
