The REAL association!
There is a unique charm associated with clubbing. As opposed to social networking online, these are institutions that emphasise on face-to-face interaction. Ashima Sehajpal checks out a few unique clubs in Chandigarh.

Did we start expecting too much from the virtual world? Could networking online be as fulfilling an experience as real-life clubbing, chatting with friends, meeting with like-minded people? Let the Facebook flaunt its multi-million members, but it still stands no chance against 'real' networking. Why else do you think there are so many clubs in Chandigarh dedicated to varied interests - luxury cars, bikes, wines, vintage cars, bikes, films, books? There is even one to support the lonely people! Here's appreciating the 'real' efforts of 'real' clubs.

Loner's Family Club

The basic aim of the club was to offer company to loners. Chand Kapoor, founder member, began the task by identifying people who stayed all by themselves in her vicinity. "I then came across an ironical reality. Not all people staying alone were loners and not all those staying with an extended family had company," says Kapoor. Loners then became a collective noun for people who felt lonely; the physical aspect, more or less, was meaningless. Five years on the club has as many as 80 members. Members meet once a month but that doesn't mean they can't discuss their concerns at other times. "We all are just a phone call away from each other," she adds.

The Bridge Club

Not much has changed in the last 30 years of this club's functioning. Members meet six days a week. Every weekend, there is a tournament. The club was formed with the objective of patronising and promoting the game of bridge. Also known as Chandigarh Bridge Association, the club charges a nominal membership fee of Rs 1,500. About what is keeping the club going in the times when the game is not as popular as it used to be, Batra says, "It's an extremely interesting recreation activity; a game of the bridge is like a military operation - you have to plan an operation, change strategies, take risks and anticipate other's person's moves," says Maj Gen (retd) RS Batra.

Chandigarh Superbikers INC

As the name suggests, one has to own a superbike to be a privileged member of the club. Only bikes with engine capacity of 500 cc or more fulfill the membership criterion. Naturally, the cost of such bikes is the same as cars in the semi-luxury segment.

The best of all: Members of the Elite Rides club gather for a rally

"People thus prefer to buy a car than a bike. But someone who has experienced the thrill of riding such a powerful bike will know what to invest in," says Balpratp Singh, a photographer and member of the club. The range begins from Rs 9 lakh. "Harley Davidson is already available in India and Ducati will be launched soon" So, the need is to promote biking culture in the city, which has a decent number of people owning luxury cars like BMW or Audi. It at present has 15 members.

Elite Rides Club

Taking a cue from a similar club in Dubai, brothers Govind RV and Chaitanya RV thought of forming such a club here. "We could have done the same by forming a community on Facebook but we realised that real-time social networking will be far more interesting," says Chaitanya. Hence the club was formed in 2010. A website dedicated to the cause gradually started enjoying hits from people with similar interest. The member count began with five and has now gone up to 15.

The Book Club

The hostess of this all-women club decides on the next book to be read within a month's time. In the next meeting of the club members, the book is reviewed and discussed. In a nutshell, the club members read 12 books a year. Free to make observations, they give their perspective on the book. The book for this month was Chanakya's Chant by Ashwin Sanghi. "The activity of reading and reviewing a book gives us a lot of exposure. We get to hear different opinions on the same work of literature,”says Simrat Kaur, member. The club began with 20 members two years ago; more women members joined in and now it has two branches-morning and the evening club.

The Wine Club

The theme at times depends on the wine colour; at times on the origin of the wine and sometimes on the food to be paired with it. The club, formed in 2006, aims at bringing together the beverage connoisseurs. "Recently, we have started getting exotic wine brands to the city," says Rajnish Wattas, member. The idea is to promote wine consumption in the region. "It's the healthiest alcoholic drink made through fermentation of grapes. It has nutritional value, acts as an antioxidant and is good for the heart." The members try out the new brands of wines available in the city.

RC Cars Club

There were apprehensions whether the count of members from the initial few would ever go up. "It's a costly hobby. Usually people consider it as a waste of money to spend thousands on a 'toy' car," says Amit Kangra, founder-member. But at the same time, he was also convinced that driving a radio controlled car gradually becomes an addiction. The twenty members of the club gather every Sunday to hold a rally and some of them own multiple cars. "And then begins car stunts-racing, bashing etc. After investing in cars, the members don't mind accessorising them. From neon lights, gear-boxes, suspension parts, to the shockers of the cars.

Deejaying as a career has come a long way, feels DJ Akhtar
Manpriya Khurana

Spining around: DJ Akhtar

Music show meant Chitrahaar, television channel stood for Doordarshan, CD's were unheard of, audio cassettes, vinyl records, no music channels as we know of today, there was a time when being a disc jockey was a bold thing rather than a big thing. From an aberration to being an institution, in a span of twenty decades the man behind the music has traveled as much as the music. "My dad couldn't even explain to people what I did, whether I played an instrument or music or what," DJ Akhtar reverses back to the days when he was just starting out.

"In fact the CD technology was invented three years after I joined and there were no television channels let alone music channels and needless to add, there was nothing like a profession called DJ," in city to play at night club Score, he observes of his close to two decades in the profession. It's a contrasting picture of the music that he paints. While doing a flashback and a fast forward. "So many years into the profession I now enjoy anything that people go crazy on, I'd rather play what people jump on like the other day these girls at a club went crazy over Black Eyed Peas. But yes, if you ask my personal tastes, I like a bit of retro." Currently a resident DJ at JW Marriott's Enigma, it's his second visit to the city. He laughs, "When I came here for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised because all my preconceived notions were shattered." Do we need an explanation here? "I came to the club at nine thirty pm, thinking things would be shutting by one. I was told the crowd here is partial to Bollywood, but on the contrary party wound up only at five thirty in the morning, and I played everything. The crowd especially the ladies were quite knowledgeable in music."

All those people who like their DJ to be not just playing their favourite song but mingling with the crowd put your hands up. "I like to interact with the crowd while I play, last time in the city I asked all the ladies to stand up on the bar and did it go full immediately."

His wall of fame cites the likes of IIFA awards in 2006, Gladrags party, ford supermodels after bash, private parties hosted for Michael Douglas, Pierce Brosnan, Boris Becker. There's a tit bit on him. "He takes a lot of interest, even joined me on the console and he really enjoys music of Snoop Dog." As of now, he's out to set everyone spinning, before that there's a word of caution. "I myself am a commerce graduate with a background in business management. Wherever I go to take lectures, I tell everyone, pursue your studies first and do this as a hobby." That's a straight and a rare one.

Being SALMAN KHAN

Salman Khan is all set for his movie Bodyguard to release. Salman attributes his long lasting success to his fans, who have given him unconditional love. He speaks to us about his upcoming film and costars.

How do you manage to stay so fit?

I started doing action movies to stay fit. As a result, I eat well and healthy and workout regularly. Working out is my hobby and I love exercise, but to look young and stay fit, I need to work out on my body a lot more.

Will we see you act only in action films?

Right now, all my projects till the end of this year are action movies. I've been offered these roles off late. However, I'm willing to do different cinema, as people will get bored with repetition. Thankfully, all these films have something unique about them. Ready was an action-comedy, while Bodyguard has a romantic angle.

Did you take the inspiration from your real life bodyguard?

Yes, sort of. But my film has a different angle. However, I have to look at my bodyguard to draw inspiration

Are there a lot of expectations from the movie?

If there are expectations, then it is good. We are actors, who work hard and impress our audience. I think the audience would want entertainment after a hectic week at work. They love to enjoy themselves at the theatre. Without my audience, I am nobody. The whole team has worked hard for Bodyguard, so I hope that the audience likes the movie.

How was it working with Kareena Kapoor once again?

She is at the top of her career today. She is a great actress. I have worked with her and Karishma and I feel lucky to have shared screen space with two beautiful women. Also, Kareena like me, is a fitness freak.

Question that irritates you…

When people ask when I will get married. It's my life and I'll get married when I want to. However, when you become a star, the audience wants to know when you will settle down and they have their best wishes for you. I have become more relaxed when people ask me this question.

Who do you like in the new crop of actors?

I hear that Ranveer Singh is very good, although I have not seen Band Baja Baraat. I think Ranbir and Imran are talented. From the women, Sonakshi, Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone are very talented. —HRM

Every cell in my body has in it a different ada…

Adah Sharma, who was seen in Phirr, looked stunning as always. We recently caught up with the actress and asked her about her fashion statements. Here is what she has to say…

My favourite Indian designer

Sonakshi Raaj

Designers I dig abroad

Vera Wang

Most of my shopping happens

Shopping is like love. It just happens - anywhere, anytime, anyplace. It's not supposed to be analysed

My style mantra

Wear what looks great on you, however uncomfortable it might be and carry it off confidently. Always be decided and doubtless. I don't embarrass easily.

Fashion to me means

To me 'style' is something you have to be born with...'Fashion' can be bought. While fashion keeps changing every month, style is eternal. Your style is yours. You can buy all the fashionable stuff from everywhere on the planet but if you don't have the right ada you can go all wrong.

Most expensive buy/bite

I think it's very tacky to talk about the price of an item. If you can carry off a jute outfit it is priceless!

Saif, the new Bond

Saif Ali Khan is now endorsing a brand of innerwear. In the commercial, he plays the role of a detective trying to solve a murder case. His look is modeled on James Bond.

Loss and gain

A lot of Bollywood actresses, including Deepika Padukone, have been busy and not signed Kamal Hassan's new project. We now hear that Kamal has roped in Sameera Reddy to play his wife.

Fast forward

After Tanu Weds Manu, there is buzz that R Madhavan will share screen space with Bipasha Basu in Shaadi Fast Forward. The story is about a divorced man, played by Madhavan, who starts a business venture. Bipasha joins his business and the two fall in love.

Kangana-Rana together?

Rajshri Ojha, who directed Aisha is ready for her second project.

The project, whose working title is Chris and Suri, is expected to release sometime in the next few months.

Buzz has it that Kangana Ranaut and Rana Dugubatti will be in the lead.

Can't make peace between warring Khans: Preity

Actress Preity Zinta, a good friend of both Salman and Shahrukh, says it is beyond her to bring about a truce between the two warring Khans.

But interestingly, Salman is going to appear on Preity's upcoming chat-show, which is being produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment.

When asked if she tried to engineer a patch-up between the two superstars, Preity said, "Please...somebody help me escape this question!"

Salman and Preity have worked together in films like Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega (2000), Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001), Jaaneman (2006). Most of them bombed at the box office. Shahrukh and Preity were seen together in Dil Se (1998), Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), Veer Zaara (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006). All these were hits.

"Each one of us has his or her own equation in the industry. This is really beyond me...or anybody else. Let's wait and watch," Preity said. The bubbly actress will have both Salman and Shahrukh — thought separately — on her chat show Up, Close And Personal With PZ . — PTI

Daniel falls under a spell

Daniel Radcliffe has been linked to a string of girls in the past, but now it has emerged that the star is secretly dating the production assistant of Harry Potter for over a year. Radcliffe met Rosanne Coker, who is also a painter and a decorator's daughter, on the set of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in 2007.

Coker's father Malcolm - who runs his own painting business - has now spilled the beans, saying he was thrilled with the romance because Radcliffe is a "lovely" guy.

"I don't want to say too much really as they would really prefer to keep things quiet," he said. "But Rosanne has worked on the last three Harry Potter films, so she and Daniel have known each other quite a long time. But they have been going out for just over a year now. — ANI

Men don't have it easy
Male models have to work hard to grab attention
Minna Zutshi

RIGHT MOVES: Prabh Jita & Karan Chhabra

Hot hunks with loads of attitude. Or unpretentious boys trying to make it big in a girls' world? It's a tough trapeze for these young men, though they love their share of glamour in the modelling industry.

Eye candy effect

This is a grey zone. These men let themselves be objectified, and yet they derive a high from it. It's very much the reversing of the male gaze. "We get those appreciative glances from women during parties. That's all right," says Chandigarh-based model Karan Chhabra. Jalandhar-based model Prabh Jita would term it as the 'appreciation zone'. "There's nothing wrong if I have women telling me that I look good." In fact, Prabh envies the ease with which women models manage to 'impress' the opposite sex. A woman's smile is enough to set a man's heart aflutter. "For a man who wants to catch a woman's eye, a solitary smile hardly works. The physicality element is more pronounced. Men have to slog it out in gyms to get a well-toned body. The six-pack abs fixation does have some truth to it," he adds.

Choose some, lose some

Male models don't have it that easy. It's out and out a woman's world in the fashion industry. This is all the more true in case of cities like Ludhiana and Jalandhar, where fashion is still considered a woman's province. "If a man decides to opt for modelling as a career, it's considered an unconventional choice," says Prabh. It's easier for an average family to accept their daughters and sisters as ramp models, believes Sharat, a 20-year-old aspiring model. The men have to plough a lonely furrow, he says. Add to it the stereotypes about the fashion industry. And it becomes a tricky choice for the men.

"The common perception (erroneously) is that the fashion industry is dominated by the gay community," says fashion designer CP Singh, adding that the issues related to exploitation in this industry cannot, however, be glossed over. "In the final analysis, it depends on you - what you want, why you want it and how desperately you want it. This applies to both men and women and it holds true for all professions," avers Karan.

A new study by Ohio State University has revealed that couples who argue on their honeymoon are more likely to have a stormy marriage over the long term compared with newlyweds that get on well. The study of almost 1,000 husbands and wives found little change in the rate of rows between them over the course of 20 years.

As couples grow older together their rate of arguing is likely to stay the same, which will be reassuring for the 16 percent who fall out infrequently and the six out of 10 whose rows are rare. For 22 percent of couples who say they have arguments on their honeymoon, however, it is more likely that they will go on to do the same throughout their married life. "There was a very slight decrease in the amount of conflict reported in the final years of the study, which was slightly larger for the high-conflict couples. Still, the differences over time were small," the Daily Mail quoted Professor Claire Kamp Dush of the University as saying. The researchers separated the respondents into high, middle and low conflict marriages and found those in the latter group were more likely than others to say they shared decision-making with their spouses. These people were also more likely than those who reported high levels of conflict to say they believed in traditional, life-long marriage. The findings were published in the Journal of Family Issues.

GET PHYSICAL
Lock your energy
Anil juneja

There are three bandhas - Mula Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha and Jhalandara Bandha. Each bandha is a lock, meaning a closing off of part of the interior body. These locks are used in various pranayama and asana practices to tone, cleanse and energise the interior body and organs. When all three bandhas are activated at the same time, it is called Maha Bandha, the great lock. Let's start with Uddiyana Bandha which increases the tone of the abdomen and gastric fire stimulating the entire fire chakra area. Thus the powers of digestion, assimilation, and immunization are naturally augmented. Uddiyana bandha tones, massages and cleans the abdominal organs and the adrenal glands are balanced by the abdominal contraction.

Bandhas, thus bind the energy from leaking out, but it thus should never be viewed as a muscle contraction. The word, bandha, is more effectively refined as an interlock rather than as the more common definition of a lock, which carries with it a negative connotation of locking out, damming up, restraining, constraining, forcing etc. It thus should be made clear that the bandhas are not physical locks, but energy locks which connects and harmonizes one's vital energy with the inner constellations, the outer constellations, and the universal eternal source of all energy. Additionally Uddiyana Bandha is used to increase and strengthen the blood flow in the brain and to regulate the blood circulation in your abdomen. It is healthy for your cardiac activity. A regular practice can relieve problems with high blood pressure and the heart in general.

Another area that greatly benefits from the practice of this yoga pose is the sexual organs of both men and women. You can practice Uddiyana Bandha for many kinds of sexual problems and dysfunctions.

It can be very beneficial for women because it is good for the ovaries and to prevent uterus collapses. If you suffer from irregular menstruations cycles or other genealogical problems this position might be a solution for you if you practice it regularly.

This posture can be performed while sitting or standing. Take a deep breath. Exhale completely until no air is left in your lungs and belly. In both, the standing and sitting position you should place your hands on your knees and lean forward during exhalation which will help you to press all air out.

After exhalation, hold your breath and contract your belly muscles so that your navel is pulled further inside and up, towards your middle back.

Stay in that position until you feel like inhaling. For coming out of the yoga pose relax your belly muscles and straighten your body with inhalation. There are a few important points to remember when beginning the practice of Uddiyana Bandha: perform it only on an empty stomach, and only after an exhalation, never before an inhalation. While doing Uddiyana Bandha always keep your chin down touching the chest but in the case of having cervical problem the gap of one fist should remain. Don't do this Bandha if you have a hernia or serious heart or abdominal problems. Please take overwork or cross your limits. It could make you dizzy and you even lead to fainting, if you don't listen to your body.

Weighty issue: Amrita Raichand

When Amrita Raichand asked the creative team of her historical show Shobha Somnath Ki on Zee TV, if she was looking fat, they said yes! After checking her reflection in the mirror, Amrita wondered if she has piled on the pounds and wanted a second opinion. "Yes! They told me I was looking fat!" said Amrita. "I'm glad for their honest opinion. I haven't grown in size but my role of Maharani Gayatri Devi is a 11th century queen and her outfit is designed to make me look a tad more buxom and heavyset. So, if I'm looking plumper, it's only by design. I am cool with consciously donning a certain look that is required of me for the role. As long as my fans find her persona striking and impressive on the whole, I don't care if I look a size larger." That's the spirit, Amrita!

On a high

next in line: Yashashri

Yashashri Masurkar's show Rang Badalti Odhani ended recently and she has already bagged the role of Mrignayani in Chandragupta Maurya. The actress is visibly excited about her new venture that is completely different from Khanak, the character that made her a household name. Yashashri says, "Khanak was a cute and simple village girl and Mrignayani is a princess, so the two roles are completely different. I did not get much time to prepare for the role, therefore my director helped me to get into the skin of the character."

Speaking about her look, the actress reveals, "My look is of a typical historical princess look with a bustier, dhoti and heavy jewelery. The look is nice although a little heavy. It takes me about an hour to get ready."

The actress has shifted to Vadodara as the show is being shot there and claims that she is already missing Mumbai. Yashashri adds, "I miss the traffic and noise in the city as in Vadodara it is nice and calm with a lot of greenery around." Speaking about the upcoming track, the actress says, "We are currently shooting the first meeting scene of Chandragupta Maurya and Mrignayani." Yashashri is all praise for co-star Ashish Sharma as she says, "Ashish is a simple and nice guy. He is a complete gentleman."

On a parting note, the actress quips that although her fans are watching Chandragupta Maurya, they have one grouse. Yashashri laughs, "My fans have accepted my new role and have been very supportive but they are still cribbing that Karan Tacker and I are not starring in the show together. I hope they get used to seeing me with Ashish now."

Big B's big words

fan club: Dilip & Amitabh Bachchan

Well known actors Dilip Joshi aka Jethalal Gada and his onscreen wife Disha Wakhani aka Daya Ben are big fans of Amitabh Bachchan. And they were thrilled to know that Big B himself praised their SAB TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and Dilip Joshi's work in the show. So, when he met the icon, Dilip Joshi was thrilled.

"I have grown up on Amitji's film. I have waited for hours to buy ticket to watch Sholay. Meeting him has been my wish. And to top it all, he has praised our show," said the very talented actor Dilip Joshi. Dilip Joshi and Disha Wakhani had met him during a shoot of a new chat show.

What an idea!

Utv Bindass' Date Trap season 2 doubles up the excitement but continues to keep the core concept of the show alive. With new fun elements that allow you to choose the date location of your choice, the pranks get naughtier as the dates get wackier! So now you can set your friend up at a swimming pool, a mall or perhaps even a dance bar… It's time to let your imagination soar high; sky is the limit on Date Trap Season 2. Building on the success of season 1, Date Trap struck an instant chord with its' unique concept and the fun quotient of getting your best buddy into trouble as you play the evil cupid- all in good humour of course.
