One killed in road mishap

Ambala, August 19
Suresh Kumar of Preet Nagar at Barara was killed on the spot when a speeding truck hit his motorcycle near Dosarka, near here.

According to sources, he was accompanied by his wife Sunita, working at the BDPO in Barara. They were going towards Dosarka when the truck hit them from the rear.

Suresh was crushed under the wheels of the truck and his wife was seriously injured. The police reached the spot and took them to the MM Medical College and Hospital.

Doctors declared Suresh dead on arrival. The police arrested the driver of the truck and registered a case against him.

Thieves strike two houses

Chandigarh, August 19
Thieves struck at two houses in different sectors and decamped with cash and valuables worth lakhs. The thieves targeted a house in Ram Darbar, owned by Sanjeev Sharma. They took away one gold necklace, two pair of earrings, two wristwatches, two pairs of silver anklets and Rs 7,000. In another incident, Hari Kishan, a resident of Sector 22, reported that someone broke into his house and decamped with three pairs of gold earrings, cash and some documents from his residence. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered in the Sector 17 police station.

Watchman commits suicide

A watchman of the Sector 35 gurdwara committed suicide by hanging himself in the room of shoe racks of the gurdwara. The victim, Saminder Singh, was found hanging from a fan by granthis around 4.30 in the morning. The police was informed and the body was lowered after cutting the rope with which he had hanged himself. The police rushed the victim to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 where doctors declared him brought dead. No suicide note was found at the spot. The body will be handed over to family members after a post-mortem. The police has ruled out a foul play.

Gold chain snatched

Two unidentified motorcyclists snatched gold chain of Saroj Bala, a resident of Sector 52, from near her residence on Thursday night. The victim was walking near her residence when snatchers snatched her chain.

10-day pre-arrest confinement

Ten days after the police rounded up a thief and confined him in the Sector 34 police station, his arrest was formally shown only today. A notorious thief, Kewal Singh, alias Tillu, was shown to be arrested at a barrier in Sector 45 by the police. Highly placed sources said the police had rounded him up 10 days ago and had been interrogating him for recoveries. It could only recover one car and arrested two more of his accomplices and then showed his arrest today.

The police has arrested Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, and Gurwinder Singh of SAS Nagar. The police said the accused was displaying a fake registration number plate on a car which he had stolen from Delhi.

The accused told the police that they were involved in auto thefts in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. They would sell stolen vehicles after preparing fake documents.

The accused were produced in court which remanded them in police custody.

2 held for forgery

The police has arrested Ashok Sharma and Parbhakar for cheating their employer to the tune of Rs 6 lakh after handing him fake bills of Tata Salt packets. The employer, Satpal, who is running his business from his house in Sector 27, alleged that both employees cheated him while depositing fake bills before him. The police said fake bills had been seized and were being scrutinised for confirming forgery. The case was registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Charges framed against Rathore’s attacker

Chandigarh, August 19
A local court today framed charges against a 29-year-old student of NIFD, Ahmedabad, Utsav Kumar Sharma, for allegedly attacking former DGP of Haryana, SPS Rathore, outside the district courts complex last year.

Convicted in the Ruchika molestation case, Rathore was attacked by Utsav Sharma with a knife.

The charges were framed under Sections 324 and 506 of the IPC. Utsav was reportedly suffering from a mental disorder and his parents had brought medical records with them to show that he was under medication. He was staying in Panchkula and posed as a mediaperson when he attacked Rathore. — TNS

2 women get better of snatcher

Showing exemplary courage, two women of Sector 10 not only foiled a snatching attempt, but thrashed the snatcher,forcing him to flee without the booty and his helmet, here today.

Around 5:30 pm, Anita Bahrdwaj was standing in front of her house. A youth snatched her gold chain. As soon as he sat on the pillion of the motorcycle, being driven by his accomplice, she caught hold of him.

Her neighbour Ritu Singhal, standing in her courtyard, joined her and they started thrashing the snatcher. The snatchers threw the chain and a helmet and fled the spot.

Tarundeep clinches junior golf title

Chandigarh, August 19
Tarundeep Chadha carded a six over par 76 to clinch the A category title in the first leg of the Junior Tour 2011 on the par-70 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

The course has been reduced to a par 70 because of the ongoing work on the 17th and 18th holes. The two closing holes have been reduced to par-three.

Vivek Gupta finished four strokes behind Tarundeep at 80. Tarun made only three pars on the front nine. But he came back with a birdie and seven pars on the back nine.

Due to the lack of participants in the girls’ section, the A and B categories had to be combined. Sukhneer won with a score of 84 with Jaipreet Ghuman finishing two strokes behind for the second slot.

Yuvraj Sandhu won the B category title returning a card of 78. Jairaj Sandhu was two strokes behind at 80.

In an exciting encounter, Karandeep Kochhar got the better of Adil Bir Singh after the two tied for the top slot at 82. In the play-off to decide the winner, Karandeep made a par to edge out Adil Bir who conceded a bogey.

Aadil Bedi lost the D category title to Kapurthala’s Yuvraj Singh by one stroke. Aditya Sood won the nine-hole competition in the E category with Rounak Jauhal finishing runner-up. Vasundhara Thiara won the combined C and D categories title in the girls’ section.

Overall 62 junior golfers teed off for the competition, which has been started by the Chandigarh Golf Club to provide more exposure to juniors.

St John’s bag top spot with 125.5 pts

St John’s High School, Sector 26, bagged the first position with 125.5 points, while Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, finished up as runner-up with 115.1 points during the ongoing Inter-School Gymnastics Championship here today.

Saupin’s School, Sector 32, scored 58.6 points to finish third, while Government High School, Sarangpur, finished fourth with 49.5 points.

Rahul of Government Model School, Karsan, got the better of Krishan Mohan of SGGS-26 in the 51-kg category of the UT Inter-School Boxing Tournament for Boys (U-19) being held at PML SD Public School, Sector 32, here today.

In the 48-kg category, Shubham Gupta beat Gurpreet; Neeraj defeated Puneet; Dilwar got the better of Navneet; Vikram defeated Rahul of DAV-8; Rahul beat Rmakant; Vishant Rao defeated Ajay Kumar; Gurdial defeated Salman Khan; Kamal defeated Arjun and Lakshya got the better of Anil.

In the 51-kg category, Amandeep defeated Harshwadan; Ranjan defeated Manoj; Durgesh defeated Mangal; Manoj defeated Sandeep; Arun defeated Satya Bhan and Sanam thrashed Ram Bhadur.

GMSSS-10 fencers claim title

In-form fencers of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10 (GMSSS-10), won all foil, spree and sabre categories in the team event during the ongoing Inter-School Fencing Competition here today.

In the boys’ (U-4 to 14) category, GMSSS-10 team was declared winner with 54 points, while Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15; Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, and SGPHS-40 finished as runners-up with 10 points. Government Model Senior Secondary School 32 and GMSSS-26 finished third in the overall category.

Results:

Foil: GMSSS-10, GSSS-15, GMSSS-33, GMSSS-32.

Bimal, Ajay, Sachender and Sandeep won top three positions in the below 40 kg category during the final of the Inter-School Sqay Martial Art Tournament for Boys (U-17) here today.

In the below 44 kg category, Anoop Kumar, Rohit Sharma, Avtar Singh and Raju Chander won top honours, while in the below 48 kg category, Anuj, Ram Parkash, Amit and Ramesh Gupta claim titles.

Results: Below 52 kg: Sarfudin Alam, Deepak Gupta, Ram Suman Verma and Rohit.

Below 56 kg: Dalbir Singh, Shubham Sood, Shivam Sharma and Manoj.
