It is the one thing that has ensured your man remains hooked onto it for the longest hours possible. No, we are not talking about the latest poster girl but about motion sensor gaming, which has changed the meaning of gaming for the current generation.

We give you a round up on what the madness about Wii, Kinet and PS Move is all about. This latest concept in the gaming culture improvises to involve the human body in the game. Imagine this, a giant screen; remote control and watching yourself play tennis on screen - that is motion sensor gaming for you. And trust us when we tell you - for now, it is exclusively a man's domain.

For Raunak Khosla, soon leaving for a communications course in the US, getting his hands on Sony's Playstation Move was an outcome of the passion for video-gaming. Acquired much before it hit the Indian markets in 2007, the gaming console has Raunak up all night. "It simply has the best features you can think of in gaming," he says. Happy with his buy, he is convinced that motion sensor gaming is the next best thing for the gaming fans. "The gaming industry is becoming more and more popular today. Even Hollywood and a lot of Bollywood is inclined towards converting their movies into games," he adds.

Manik Kalara is one of those very few people in Chandigarh who are not satisfied with just one console; he laid his hands on all three. "Yes, I have Kinect by Microsoft, Wii by Nintendo and Playstation Move. Microsoft has totally given a new dimension to the gaming culture by introducing Kinect in X Box. The best part is it does not even require a controller," he smiles. When you are a jack of all trades, it really doesn't work till you become the master of one. Keeping this philosophy in mind, Manik has his preferences clear. "Wii has its own disadvantages. The graphics are outdated and there is less to offer for hardcore gamers," he shares. With close-to-perfect time lag, he is more than happy playing around on his Kinect. "We are hoping the time lag will be fixed with the upcoming version of the game -Halo Anniversary," he shares. Hoping to come face-to-face with mind control games, Manik is looking for more in motion sensor gaming. "There is less for hardcore gamers. We need to stop making games for casual gaming," he says.

Even young boys are replacing the traditional gaming for the latest on the shelves. Gurjashan Singh Bhambal is one such 12-year-old. Talking about his Kinect, for him, the biggest high is the fact that it does not look like a game and the resemblance it has with real life. Sharing the details about the same, he says, "It has been the best gift my dad could have got from his last trip abroad."

Keeping in mind the growing enthusiasm for gaming in Chandigarh, Oxide Gaming Lounge opened its doors for gamers in September last year. Now one-year-old, the lounge has become a regular hotspot for one and all. Sharing the details about what all they have for the gaming addicts, Rahul Katla, lounge manager shares, "We have a dedicated Wii area with a 60'' projection screen, stereo surround sound and the perfect environment for gaming." Gamers can experience the real life games like baseball, bowling, boxing, surfing, and cycling. "We have all consoles available in the region - Playstation Move, Nintendo Wii and X Box Kinect. Undoubtedly, Nintendo Wii and Playstation Move win hands down," he shares.

Another fan, Jai Inder Singh got his X Box Kinect due to the intriguing concept that motion sensor gaming is. For him, the best part has been the technical advancements. "It doesn't come with a remote; senses the body movement and makes the player a controller," he adds.

High Points

  • Playstation Move: Has been created by Sony. Based on hand-held motion controller wand, it uses the Playstation Eye cameras to track the wands position and inertial sensors in the wand to detect its motion
  • Nintendo Wii: Most distinguishing feature is the wireless controller, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Designing permits users to control the game using physical gestures.
  • X Box 360: Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface through gestures and spoken commands.

HIGH ON FASHION
Young designers from the region are all set to participate in the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011, which begins on August 16
Manpriya Khurana

The idea each time is to outdo the last time! Like always, the schedule is set; the dates are out, the designers all geared up; we guess so are the sponsors, the paparazzi…it's been a while since Lakme Fashion Week has been buzzing about its second edition of the year. On the face of it, Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2011, starting August 16, promises to be just as similar and just as different as last season, if not the last year!

To begin from the end, Manish Malhotra will present the grand finale (Like always). He will be interpreting the new cosmetic range while showcasing his designs. Like always, (like every designer each time) he is "very excited about the upcoming event." He recently shared, "There is a lot of pressure. The range is going to be very glamorous and international. This is one of the reasons my name came to the minds of the organisers and I hope I am able to live up to their expectations." He is expected to put on stage Indian outfits done in his characteristic touch.

While Rohit Bal, industry veteran, will kickstart the week with a grand show for the offsite at Tote. Ritu Kochhar, corporate director, INIFD, gives a lowdown on what to expect, "We are the knowledge partner with Lakme Fashion Week. This time too, there will be big designers participating, lots of celebrities and of course together they will all set the trends for upcoming seasons, especially the wedding season."

The count of designers participating is pegged at a record eighty-seven. The six-day carnival will continue with gen-next programme (that enters its 12th season). This time too, eight designers from across the country will showcase their debut collections. Along side presenting their collections will be nine new model faces selected out of an audition comprising 118 models.

Shares Nitish Bramta, student, INIFD, "I have already been there once. This time again I'm going for the upcoming week. For the very first time, our duty was just to escort the celebrities to their respective places. Even a role as small as that, you get to learn a lot. As far as designers are concerned, there are a lot of myths about them. Even before the show, they are often calm and friendly." Apart from the newbie string to make their way through the fashion haze, there will be Archana Kochhar, Rina Dhaka, JJ Valaya, Parvesh Jai, Nachiket Barve, Neeta Lulla and Wendell Rodricks. Hit or a miss, anybody who's somebody in the world of fashion will be there, either for a little while or for a long time!

Mind your etiquettes
Is it only about being trendy or speaking Hinglish fluently or do etiquettes go beyond that? Do youngsters today understand what lies behind the word etiquette ?
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Times are changing and so are people. No one really wants to put up with people who lack refinement and etiquette, even if it is the boss! But for the new breed of Gen Y professionals and adolescents who consider opening the door for a colleague as 'buttering', etiquette is only about looking stylish, fluently speaking 'Hinglish' and using swear words in a refined manner!

What they lack is the basic understanding of the word etiquette. "The youngsters must understand that etiquette is not only about looking good. It is a way of life, and involves simple things such as making way for a senior, speaking in a refined manner without using swear words and eating with your mouth closed," says Suveechi, trainer and consultant for educational institutes. She adds, "Traditionally, we were a refined lot, but somewhere, there has been a dilution. Gadget and gizmos have taken the place of real life training and I guess it's time to get back to the basics."

For the professionals, Dilpreet Singh, lecturer of Masters in Business Administration at a private college, says, "A professional must realise that he or she is projecting a brand and that any slip reflects on the company. Behaving like an upstart does not take you far in life. But the saving grace is that youngsters are receptive to suggestions. They want an explanation and once it makes sense, they accept it."

"Though the new kids know that soft skills are the need of the hour, but what they don't understand is that people are watching them all the time — how they dress, speak, behave and present themselves," he adds.

That is why finishing school is still so relevant. "Etiquette is gaining importance in the present day world. You might have the technical knowledge, but what makes you stand out is etiquette. Learn to care for those around you, be a little more considerate and learn table manners," says Aditi Srivastav, director INIFD.

It does not mean learning how to wade through a seven-course dinner. Focus on the basics. Though pointers can come from all sources, the change has to come from within. And, it must not be merely cosmetic. Naomi Campbell is so wonderfully dressed, but her behaviour always draws flak!

What a froth!
A recent beer festival and celebration of the International Beer Day, the beer culture is sure catching up in Chandigarh
Ashima Sehajpal

Raise a toast to the drink that finally managed an image makeover! Forget being reckoned as an exotic beverage like champagne, it never even enjoyed the status of even the single malt whisky! There have never been tasting sessions or special festivals to honour the beer. The commoner's drink was taken for granted, until recently when it finally got its due in Chandigarh. A restaurant held a festival and another celebrated the International Beer Day last week.

"Beer is one drink that everybody enjoys. Once you start enjoying beer, it's difficult to switch over to other hard drinks," says Priyanka Gupta, owner of Hops n Grains, a microbrewery in Panchkula that celebrated the day. Coming to the history of the day, it was first celebrated in 2008 and 23 countries, including India, celebrated it in 2010. "It's one of the most popular drinks, so a day dedicated to it makes a lot of sense. It aims at celebrating beer with drink connoisseurs."

From a few years good quality beers are available in India. Priyanka feels that it was because of the absence of international labels here that the drink wasn't really popular. Only locally brewed beers were available. Also, the focus has always remained on fine scotches and wines, which were offered at various bars and lounges. Now, brands like Budsweiser and Tuborg are served in lounges and restaurants.

In the same spirit, a great combination of beer and burger was explored at the Beer and Burger festival hosted by Hometel, Chandigarh. Ashish Bali, Executive Chef, reasons why the drink has become popular, "The alcohol percentage as compared to other hard drinks is very less in beer, making it the perfect social drink. Women also prefer it to other drinks for the same reason. Also, people take alcoholic drinks these days as a social gesture and beer fits the bill well." It's easy on pocket as compared to other up-market beverages.

Beer cocktails are also a huge hit. Mix beer with Limca and what you get is Sandy cocktail. Kuldip Singh Thakur, a Chandigarh-based bartender, shares the most popular beer cocktail, "A mix of Bloody Mary, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce and beer in the right proportion gives a wonderful cocktail." At Hops n Grains, one can get beer dishes — Drunken Vegetables, in which vegetables are sautéed in beer and Beery Chicken Wings cooked in a dash of beer.

Vineet Mishra, director of cocktailjockey.com, says experiments with beer have made it a favourite. "It takes time to develop a taste for hard drinks. Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavours have increased the consumption. Once only considered a summer drink, it now finds a lot of takers throughout the year." Cheers to that!

Dark secret

Which beer is better - dark or pale? Researchers from the University of Valladolid in Spain have discovered the answer for one of science's most pressing questions. They analyzed 40 brands of beer from all five continents and found that dark beer has more free iron than pale and non-alcoholic beers.

Dark beers have an average free iron content of 121 parts per billion compared to the 92 ppb in pale beers and 63 ppb in non-alcoholic beers.

Iron is an essential part of the human diet and also helps in oxidizing the organic compounds in beers, which provide the beverages with their taste.

The researchers believe that the higher iron content in dark beers could come from the hop and malt extracts used produce it.

In contrast, pale beer production includes a filtering process that uses sedimentary rock of a porous nature to trap the iron in the beer, thus lowering the iron content.

Non-alcoholic beer undergoes vacuum evaporation processes to remove the alcohol. This operation also removes iron ions given that they are dragged by the volatile molecules. — ANI

A case for stairs
Sukhmani

The space under the stairs is usually neglected, but depending upon the size and the location of the stairs and with a little bit of creativity you can put this dead space to good productive use.

  • This place is ideal for storage. Make shelves and drawers and neatly stack away things like old newspapers, shoes etc.
  • You can place a computer and a study table for your kids. Paint the area in a cheerful colour and you have a cosy space for your child to study.
  • You can build a home office under the stairs by adding a desk and some shelves. Paint the area in warm colours to make it look more welcoming.
  • Depending on the plumbing situation, a small bathroom can be added. This will add to the functionality of your house without any addition to the floor plan.
  • Make a small play house for your kids and stack up the space with their favourite things. Add shelves to store toys and use bright colours to make it look cheerful.
  • Have an extra guest? Not to worry. Place a sofa-cum-bed under the stairs to accommodate him.
  • You can use this space to build a wine rack or a small bar.
  • Make a library or a book shelf to keep all your books neatly. You could also use the space as a private nook for reading. Place throw cushions or a chair with a lamp for reading.
  • Decorate with ornamental plants and maybe a small waterfall to create an indoor garden.
  • If proper plumbing is possible, use the area for laundry or convert it into a linen cupboard.
  • Place an aquarium or build a compact TV unit.

Suit yourself
Mommy Tummy suit allows men to experience discomforts of pregnancy

Tech experts in Japan have created a suit that lets a man experience the constant discomfort and odd physical sensations of being pregnant. Takayuki Kosaka's "Mommy Tummy" pregnancy suit simulates nine months of weight gain, breast enlargement, baby kicking and balance changes in just over two minutes.

Designed at the Kanagawa Institute of Technology (KAIT) in Atsugi, Japan, the suit resembles a flak jacket or the lead vest that people wear when getting dental X-rays.

A bladder in the belly fills up with water, simulating the growth and average weight of Japanese babies. Similar bladders in the chest expand to simulate breasts filling with milk.

A series of actuators that lie against the wearer's stomach fire on and off to give the sensation of a kicking baby, and sensors on the tummy allow the wearer to relieve the kicking by rubbing the belly.

Kosaka and his team hope to deploy the Mommy Tummy suits in hospitals and community centres, where men can increase their visceral empathy towards their partners during pregnancy classes.

"It's hard to tell in two minutes if someone becomes more empathetic, but we have gotten a lot of comments about how users are glad that they're dudes," Live Science quoted Robert Songer, an associate lecturer at KAIT and a researcher on the Mommy Tummy project, as saying.

The suit has been put on display at the SIGGRAPH 2011 interactive technology conference. — ANI

Hungry? You must be stressed

Stress temporarily rewires nerve cells in the brain to amplify hunger pangs, a new research including an Indian-origin researcher has revealed. Researchers in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine have uncovered a mechanism by which stress increases food drive in rats.

This new discovery could provide important insight into why stress is thought to be one of the underlying contributors to obesity.

Normally, the brain produces neurotransmitters (chemicals responsible for how cells communicate in the brain) called endocannabinoids that send signals to control appetite.

In this study, the researchers found that when food is not present, a stress response occurs that temporarily causes a functional re-wiring in the brain.

This re-wiring may impair the endocannabinoids' ability to regulate food intake and could contribute to enhanced food drive, the researchers said.

The researchers also discovered that when they blocked the effects of stress hormones in the brain, the absence of food caused no change in the neural circuitry.

Researchers Jaideep Bains, Ph.D. and Quentin Pittman, Ph.D., looked specifically at nerve cells (neurons) in the region of the brain called the hypothalamus. This structure is known to have an important role in the control of appetite and metabolism and has been identified as the primary region responsible for the brain's response to stress. — ANI

Guru mantra
Celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Government College of Art organised a painting workshop

Colour of wisdom: Students bring out various facets of Rabindranath Tagore during the workshop
Colour of wisdom:
Students bring out various facets of Rabindranath Tagore during the workshop.

For the common man, the movement of leaves in the cool breeze is science. For an artist, it is the dance of nature. Filling an array of colours on the canvas, the Government College of Art organised a painting workshop in the college premises. Inaugurated by KK Sharma, advisor to the administrator, the entire hall was overflowing with replicas of his work.

Eminent art historian, BN Goswami spoke about his adoration for the icon. "Tagore was such a figure that everyone addressed him with different names. It was only in Bengali that his name immortalised his aura. He was fondly called Kavi," he says. Even Mahatma Gandhi addressed Tagore as Maharishi. "Yes, Maharishi is a term used for those who are not human and not Gods. They have a category of their own," he shares.

Just as Goswami was speaking, students started converting the blank canvases into a colour picture of varying tints and shades.

Elaborating about how Tagore was immersed in his love for colours, Goswami says, "It was at the age of 60 Tagore realised that he was unable to express enough in words. At that point he made corrections in his manuscript 'Mansi' and saw drawings emerging from the text. This was his first encounter with art." After that Tagore laid his soul bare for the world to see. "It's not easy to create self-portraits. His works are outstanding."

A student with sheer creative genius turned the same blank canvas into a striking image of Tagore, using his fingers as brushes and all possible shades to create the Guru's image.

"He understood the depth of his pain and expressed his anger through his portraits. His works are expressions of a deeply disturbed mind," Goswami adds.

The workshop showcases works created by the students over the past few days. The most striking is a portrait of Tagore in grey ink with an orange background and lines from his work. "It's overwhelming to see students making efforts to keep his work alive," DS Kapoor, principal of the college says.

All his works, in terms of plays, writings, poems and art, spoke the language of today and find their relevance even today.

"Art is as old as human civilisation. Artists don't replicate but express their experiences in life," KK Sharma says.

In between the colours and the brushes, Tagore lives in the hearts, minds and souls of all those who admire him.

Depressing facts

A new study has linked depression with increased risk of stroke in women. In six years of follow-up of women in the Nurses' Health Study, researchers found that a history of depression was associated with a 29 per cent increased risk of total stroke - even after considering other stroke risk factors.

Women who used anti-depressant medication - particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors- had a 39 per cent increased risk of stroke.

Anti-depressant medication use may be an indicator of depression severity, said Kathryn Rexrode, MD, the study's senior author and Associate Physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass.

"I don't think the medications themselves are the primary cause of the risk. This study does not suggest that people should stop their medications to reduce the risk of stroke," she stated.

Compared to women without a history of depression, depressed women were more likely to be single, smokers and less physically active.

They were also slightly younger, had a higher body mass index and more coexisting conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

The finding was reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. — ANI

Love-hate story
What is Bollywood without high-profile romances, affairs, break-ups, link-ups, leaked videos, couple spotting, and gossip? We take a look at actresses who have been linked with their male counterparts

Kareena Kapoor: She couldn't care less about what people write about her or talk about her. She knows what she wants and is unapologetic about it. So, let's begin. There was a diamond merchant's son she dated. After him, she had a fling with Hrithik Roshan. Fardeen Khan had the hots for her and according to sources, she didn't mind that at all. She pursued Shahid Kapoor for a while and he finally gave in. They were Bollywood's cutest and most compatible couple. Suddenly, they broke up. Some said he was getting close to Vidya and Amrita (Rao) and others said she was getting too close to Saif. Now, Saif and Kareena became the hottest and most glamourous couple in town. Bebo has finally found her Prince Charming.

Anushka Sharma: The pretty and expressive fireball of an actress was clean. Then she met Ranveer Singh. There were rumours of Shahid Kapur taking a fancy for her but those stories died quickly. Anushka and newcomer Ranveer hit it off instantly while making Band Baaja Baaraat. They loved and hated each other. People started talking about them. They have even been seen getting cozy at parties. They have almost publicly declared their love for each other. Yet, we are supposed to believe that the promising stars are nothing but "good friends!"

Katrina Kaif: The English Rose finds it very easy to enchant men. At the (bad) beginning of her career, she was linked with mentor Kaizad Gustad (director of Boom who brought her to India). Then, Salman Khan took over and guided her career, making her the huge star she is today. They dated but never officially accepted it. While dating Sallu, she was linked with New York co-star John Abraham and later was "more than good friends" with the charming Ranbir Kapoor. She and Salman are definitely off (as of now) but they continue to be friends. The grace with which she has handled the situation is amazing. She loves his family and vice versa. The gorgeous girl is currently single.

Priyanka Chopra: The former beauty queen has an unmatched joie de vivre and it is probably her easy going charm and sex appeal that makes guys fall for her. In the beginning of her career, there were strong stories of something brewing between her and the already-married Akshay Kumar. Anyway, Twinkle barred Akshay from working with her ever again (post Aitraaz). After Akshay, she dated (and continuously denied) Hurman Baweja for nearly four years. They split shortly after the failure of Love Story 2050. When she started shooting for Kaminey with cutie-pie Shahid Kapoor, she was invariably linked with him. If sources are to be believed, she dumped Hurman for Shahid. Needless to say, both Shahid and PC maintained that they were "just good friends" and had a blow-hot-blow-cold affair for more than two years. As of now, they have called off their amourous equation.

Bipasha Basu: The smouldering dusky beauty has dated Dino Morea and John Abraham. She has also been amorously linked with a variety of hotties such as Saif Ali Khan (apparently, they had a fling while making Race), footballer Christiano Ronaldo, Singularity co-star Josh Hartnett, Dum Maaro Dum co-star Rana Daggubatti, and most recently, believe it or not, Shahid Kapoor. She is no longer with John and has declared her single-and-available status.

Sonam Kapoor: Anil Kapoor's daughter thinks it is tacky to talk about relationships in public but she doesn't think it is tacky to make fun of someone else (family friend Ranbir Kapoor) in public. For the longest time, rumours about her and Ranbir (her co-star in Saawariya and assistant director buddy) wouldn't die down. Apparently, he dumped her for Deepika. Then she found solace in the arms of Kunal Kapoor, reportedly. Anyway, it was love-at-first-sight for her and I Hate Luv Storys director Punit Malhotra. The two refuse to acknowledge that they are dating.

Deepika Padukone: The pretty doe-eyed girl has raised a few eyebrows since her arrival here. She has dated Nihar Pandya, Yuvraj Singh, and Ranbir Kapoor. Lately, there are whispers that she is going on strong with the utterly likable Siddharth Mallya. Apparently, Neil Nitin Mukesh is very fond of her too and the two are good friends. There were false rumours about her and Farhan Akhtar as well.

No preaching, please
I am here to entertain, not lecture the audience: Sanjay

Sanjay Dutt Actor Sanjay Dutt, who will be seen next in soon-to-be released action-comedy Chatur Singh - Two Star, says he would like to stick to films that entertain the audience as they don't prefer "preachy" movies.

"I want to do films which entertain people. I did films like Knock Out and Lamha though both these films were good. But today audiences do not like movies that are preachy or give lecture. They feel why to see this lecture kind of films...as it is they are aware about the issues like that of Kashmir," Sanjay said.

"So I have decided to do just commercial films which I used to do. I am not here to give lecture to the audience," he said.

Chatur Singh... is directed by Ajay Chandhok and stars Sanjay Dutt, Anupam Kher, and Ameesha Patel in lead roles. About the film, Sanjay said, "It is out-an-out comedy and a commercial film you can go and have a blast. The movie is about a police officer who is funny and it is Sonia (Ameesha Patel) who helps her get right clues. All this leads to a sequence of hilarious events." When asked about similarity between American-Czech comedy film The Pink Panther (2006) and Chatur Singh - Two Star, the actor said, "There is no similarity. It is not a copy of the Pink Panther series because not even a single film of the series has clicked in India. The movie is based on a novel called Chalaak Jasoos,” he said. — PTI

Great expectations

Expecting success: Cheryl Cole Pop star Cheryl Cole is set to make her Hollywood debut alongside a string of stars in the upcoming What to Expect When You're Expecting. The 28-year-old star, who was axed from the US reality show American Idol after four days of work, will join Hollywood actresses like Cameron Diaz, 38, and Jennifer Lopez, 42, in forthcoming film.

The film, which is an adaptation of the successful pregnancy guide, went on floors in mid-May and Cole will shoot her scenes in the US later this month.

Apparently the 'Girls Aloud' star will be seen hitting back at Simon Cowell - the creator of American Idol - when she plays her cameo role as a TV talent show judge in the film.

The film, which also includes actors Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock and Matthew Morrison, chronicles the lives of four couples as they prepare to become parents and is scheduled to hit the theatres in May. — PTI

Bond with the best

Eva Green, who is delighted the much delayed 23rd James Bond movie is finally happening, has revealed that she finds "cool" and "edgy" Daniel Craig fitting for the part. Green, 31, was dismayed to hear about the problems surrounding the follow-up to 2008's Quantum of Solace because of financial problems at the MGM film studio.

Executives eventually resolved the issues and the untitled 007 movie is due to begin shooting later this year.

"I'm happy it's happening, that's for sure. Daniel Craig's great, he's quite raw, he's edgy, he's cool, he's like a modern Steve McQueen," Contactmusic quoted her as telling Total Film magazine. — ANI
