Five people were killed in two separate incidents at Phillaur and nearby Ganna village. One Bimla Devi was killed due to roof collapse at Chakdana village in Nawanshahr district. Road and rail traffic was badly disrupted. The national highway between Phagwara and Ludhiana caved in at certain points. People remained caught in traffic jams at several places due to the impediments caused by the heavy downpour. As rail tracks were also submerged near Phillaur, rail authorities directed train drivers to be cautious.
Ludhiana city was virtually flooded following 400 mm rain during the last 24 hours. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal directed a team of senior officials to visit Ludhiana city immediately to take necessary steps to deal with the crisis situation.
Rain water inundated crops in several villages in Nawanshahr, Nakodar and Shahkot areas. Affected people have blamed the state government for the flood-like situation at various places because the authorities concerned did not take adequate measures to drain out the accumulated rain water, alleged villagers near Nakodar.
According to the metrological department officials, the rainfall that started last evening and continued till afternoon threw life out of gear and pressed the administration to cancel holidays of the staff in Ludhiana district. The first incident in Ludhiana took place during midnight, when a truck driver was killed and his helper sustained
serious injuries after a road near Kaka Marriage Palace on Ferozepore road caved in and a truck ferrying iron rods fell in it.
The victim has been identified as Sonu, a native from Bihar. A 5-metre deep and 10-metre-wide crater occurred right in the middle of the street. It was nearly after a five-hour-long rescue operation that the truck could be pulled out from the crater.
In another incident this morning, a portion of the heritage Lodhi Fort fell on a house located in Quila Mohalla. Two children, including Ajay Kumar (15) and his younger brother Vipan Kumar were buried under the debris, while six others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the civil hospital. A pregnant woman died after the roof of a house collapsed at Friends Colony in Meharban area.
According to Dilbag Singh, the tragedy took place in the wee hours when his daughter-in-law Anju Bala (21), who was seven months pregnant, and 11other members of the family were sleeping inside the house. Eleven members, including Dilbag Singh, his wife Surinder Kaur, husband Mandeep Singh, elder son Amarjeet Singh, his wife Puja, Daljit Singh, Manjeet Kaur, Balwinder Kaur, Sarabjit Singh, Rahul and Neetu. The area resident rescued the injured who were buried under the debris and rushed them to hospital.
Atma Ram, Pramod Kumar and Pawan, residents of Field Gunj, Chander Nagar and Pavitter Nagar, respectively, died after they were electrocuted. While a person who was drowned at Malakpur village could not be identified.
A brother-sister duo was crushed to death by an over-speeding tractor-trailer at Sua Road near Gyaspura here this evening. Param Hans Shukla, father of the duo said due to the slippery surface, he lost control over the vehicle and his daughter Tipsy (17) and son Saurabh (12) fell from the scooter and were mowed down by a speeding tractor-trailer.
The Daba police has booked the tractor-trailer driver under Section 304-A of the IPC for rash driving causing death.
Scores of vehicles that were parked alongside the wall at the DMC Hospital and Lord Mahavira Hospital were damaged after the wall collapsed.
Heavy downpour claimed lives of five, including two head constables of Punjab Police, one young woman and her two kids in the wee hours in Phillaur today.
Head constable Faqir Singh (46), a resident of Kapurthala, and head constable Sarwan Kumar (47) were killed on the spot when the roof of their living quarters suddenly collapsed due to heavy rain in the nearby Saifabad Police Firing Range. Both the cops were being trained at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, and doing their intermediate course.
Phillaur DSP Raj Balwinder Singh, while confirming the tragedy, told The Tribune that both the deceased were sleeping in their quarters, while their third colleague head constable Bhupinder Singh escaped unhurt, as he was on patrol duty at the time of the tragedy. The bodies of both the head constables were handed over to the families of the deceased after conducting the post-mortem examination.
In another mishap, three members of a family, including Rekha Rani (25), her son Abhijot (2) and daughter Kiran (5) were buried alive when the roof of their room collapsed while they were sleeping.
