SSP orders inquiry against SHO
Patiala, August 13 Yesterday, SHO, Kotwali police station, went out of his way and jurisdiction to thrash a Junior Engineer (JE) posted at Patiala, in full public. Speaking to TNS, SSP, Patiala, Gurpreet Singh Gill said though there was no official complaint lodged against the SHO concerned by anyone, he has ordered an inquiry to be conducted by SP (City) Daljit Singh in two days. “Based on the media report I have asked for a time bound inquiry into the incident and if found guilty we will take strict action against the SHO,” Gill added. According to onlookers, a car driven by a JE posted in the city was hit by a vehicle from the rear on the Mall Road. Following this the JE had an argument with the car driver who hit his car. Following the accident, the car driver who was on the folly, tried to make some calls. After a few minutes SHO Rajesh Chibber appeared on the spot and without hearing anyone there, he and his gunmen pounced upon the JE, later identified as Vijay, and gave him a sound thrashing and later packed him off in their official vehicle without following any prescribed law. The police said the area fell under the domain of division number four and the SHO concerned had no control or authority to interfere. While Rajesh Chibber denied the incident, Patiala IG Paramjit Singh Gill promised to look into the matter claiming that such incidents in the public mar the image of the entire department. |

Schools, colleges celebrate I-Day
Patiala, August 13 Vice-president of the school Tejinder Kaur Arora and execution director Shivinder Kaur also graced the occasion. Most of the teachers and students wore tri-coloured attires. The children sang patriotic songs and remembered the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom. Meanwhile, during week-long Independence Day celebrations, DAV Public School, Bhupindra road, Patiala, organised various activities to inculcate the feeling of nationalism and patriotism. Rakhi making competition was organised for Class VI in which Pallavi Sharma (VI-D), Hitakshi (VI-C) and Shifali (VI-D) got first, second, third positions, respectively. Principal SR Prabhakar lauded the talent and efforts of the students and their guide teachers and instructed the students to tread the path of patriotism. Meanwhile, under the patronage of principal KD Singh and Dr Manjit Singh Bal of Government Medical College, Patiala, the Independence Day was celebrated in the medical education cell of the college. A cultural programme of patriotic songs, poems and lectures was presented by students of MBBS, MD, faculty members, classes III and IV employees. |
United India Insurance told to pay Rs 2.74 lakh
Chandigarh, August 13 The district forum-II, comprising its president Lakshman Sharma and member Madhu Mutneja, while directing the respondents to also pay Rs 7,000 towards the cost of litigation to the complainant, held that the perusal of the FIR showed that the complainant and his driver had informed the police about the theft of their vehicle the very next day and had also tried to trace the car themselves. The complaint was lodged by the Ludhiana police station only when they were unable to find the car. In his appeal, Satinder Kumar submitted that he had insured his Indica car with the respondents and the IDV of the vehicle was Rs 2,74,490. His colleague borrowed the car along with the driver for a personal visit. On way back, the driver offered a lift to some youths, who presented themselves as students of a Chandigarh college. After travelling for some distance, the driver stopped the car near a dhaba to ease himself and left its engine running. The youths sped away in the car. The driver informed the complainant, who further informed the police station - division No. 7, Ludhiana - the next day. The police registered an FIR on December 1, 2009 after investigating the case. However, the counsel for the respondents took preliminary objections that the vehicle driver had acted in a grossly negligent manner by giving lift to unknown persons and then leaving the vehicle in running condition with the key inside. Further immediate information of the loss/theft was not given to the police and the insurance company, which was a violation of the terms and conditions of the policy. The FIR was lodged after 10 days. |

Man booked for seeking dowry
Chandigarh, August 13 According to the police, in her complaint filed with the police station-17, Harjeet stated that Harish had developed relations with her and when she asked him to marry her, he refused to do so. She alleged that Harish had demanded Rs 50 lakh from her on the pretext of settling abroad. The police has started its investigations. A case under Sections 120, 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, has been registered. |

Body found in beat box
Chandigarh, August 13 Jaspal Singh, SHO of the Sector-31 police station said the body was found in the beat box near Kali Bari light point. “The investigation and medical reports have revealed that it is a natural death,” he said. The traffic cops deployed at the light point noticed the body and informed the area police. The SHO said the identification of the body was yet to be done. 1 lakh stolen
A bag containing Rs 1 lakh in cash was stolen from a car parked in the parking lot of a hotel in Sector 22 on Friday. Nitika Aggarwal, a resident of Jammu, in her complaint to the police said she had gone for a piece of work, leaving behind a bag containing cash in the car. Two cases of house theft were reported from Sectors 18 and 46 here today. In his compliant, Harwinder Singh, a resident of Sector 46, stated that gold and silver jewellery were stolen from his house on Friday night. In another compliant, Baljit Bains, a resident of Sector 18, complained that his purse containing the driver’s license, debit cards and cash, along with a diamond ring, was stolen from his residence. Excise official held for graft
Chandigarh, August 13 Following a complaint of Ambrish Arora, a resident of Sector 2, Panchkula, the police nabbed Ravinder Kumar Arora, superintendent (Service Tax) with the Central Excise Revenue Department, while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. He was arrested from the Central Revenue Building in Sector 17-C. The police said the bribe was allegedly being demanded in lieu of issuing assessment order regarding service tax return in respect of Pioneer Financial Services, SCO 18-19, second floor, Sector 8-C, Chandigarh. The original assessment order along with the gratification amount was also recovered from his possession. Seven cases of theft solved
Zirakpur, August 13 The SHO, Zirakpur, stated the accused Ravinder Singh, a resident of Kurukshetra, was arrested on August 8 from Singhpura chowk. He was arrested in a theft incident that took place on August 5 at the house of Navjeet Singh of Maya Garden. During interrogation, the accused had confessed to his involvement in seven theft cases at Royal Estate, Silver City, Savitri Towers and Savitri Enclave in Zirakpur. Gold jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, $1150, Rs 58,000 and an SUV were recovered from his possession. The police official said the accused had a lavish lifestyle. He had bought his SUV on loan after paying Rs 2.5 lakh as down payment. He was fond of spending time in five star hotels and visited Delhi several times. He always conducting a thorough recce of a place before committing the theft. The accused was involved in various cases of theft in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Kurushetra, he added. |

4 booked for trespass
Mohali, August 13 According to the police, Ravinder Kumar alleged that the accused had come to his shop around 2 pm and asked for liquor on credit. When denied the favour the accused, along with his accomplices, entered the shop and assaulted him. He alleged that the accused broke the liquor bottles also. A case has been registered. |

I-Day Cup golf final today
Chandigarh, August 13 Arvind and Col Padda overcame the challenge from Brig Bikramjit Singh and Major TS Bedi in the semifinals. The winning team were two holes up after nine holes. They won the 11th, but lost the 13th. However, by the 16th, they were three holes up and were declared the winners. Arvind had earlier won the Independence Cup in 2007 in partnership with Dr GS Kochhar. The other semifinal was hard-fought and went the full distance. Playing against SS Lehal and Capt GS Ghuman, the Kanika-Mohan team were trailing by three holes on the seventh. But the winning team came back with wins on the eighth, 10th and 17th to draw level. K’taka edge out Punjab
Chandigarh, August 13 Punjab, who had earlier recorded a first innings win against Karnataka President’s XI, logged nine points from three matches, the same as Karnataka President’s XI in same number of matches. Since Karnataka recorded one outright win in their last league encounter against Vidarbha, they edged out Punjab from the tournament. DPS Pinjore emerge champions
Chandigarh, August 13 DPS Pinjore dominated the proceedings, as they forged ahead in the 19th minute with Param Walia netting the first goal. Karan Bhagat ensured the title by confirming the lead through Karan in the 38th minute. Earlier, in the semifinal, DPS Pinjore’s beat DPS Jammu 2-0 through goals by Rahul (15th minute) and Param Walia (35th minute), while DPS Chandigarh blanked DPS Amritsar 2-0 with the help of goals by Nipun (10th minute) and Sachin (28th minute).
