Zirakpur, August 10
The traffic on the Zirakpur-Kalka highway came to a standstill on Wednesday morning compelling schoolchildren, office goers and ambulances to wait for around three hours following a protest staged by the suppliers of construction material. They were protesting against the excise and taxation department for seizing documents of their vehicles.

However, Baltana residents have demanded that the brick and other construction material market be shifted from the residential area to another place. They alleged minor accidents were a routine affair on this road due to haphazard parking of trucks and tractor-trailers.

A councillor of Ward No. 12, Jagtar Singh, alleged that he had informed the officials of the Zirakpur Municipal Council about the menace of illegal parking of trucks and tractor-trailers along the Baltana link road many times but the council officials have not taken any action. Earlier, MC president NK Sharma had visited the place and told the suppliers to put only sample material at their shops, he added.

Around 100 suppliers of bricks and other construction material alleged that at 3.30 am the officials of excise and taxation department had forcibly seized the documents of 16 loaded vehicles parked in the parkinglot of Kalgidhar market. They also alleged that the officials assaulted the drivers of the vehicles and asked them to visit the excise department with proper documents. The protestors blamed that the excise department had harassed them under the influence of the Brickkiln Association.

The traffic jam that began at 8.30 am left the schoolchildren, employees and visitors to the Chandigarh and Panchkula stranded. The protesters blocked the highway with metal barricades used by the traffic police. They also blocked the highway with rope and parked their vehicles. The passengers commuting through public transport were seen walking down the road leaving the busses and auto-rickshaws.

A lawyer at the Punjab and Haryana High Court rued that it was not the right way to protest and the police should register a case against the protesters. The lawyer said he could not appear before the Bench at the time of hearing, as he was stranded in the jam. He had to ask his junior to appear in place of .him in the court

“It was a harrowing time till the time the NH was blocked as I was supposed to attend a meeting with my clients in Baddi, however, due to the protest I had to cancel the meeting”, said Anup Kumar, a resident of Patiala.

“I had to reach Panchkula for an interview however, for over two hours I was stuck in the traffic jam following which I missed my interview with a BPO company”, Manoj Sharma, a resident of Zirakpur, said.

Zirakpur SHO Yogi Raj and Duty Magistrate Varinder Dhoot reached the spot and assured the protesters to discuss their problem with the officials concerned.

However, the official of the excise and taxation department said that they laid a naka and inspected the vehicles loaded with bricks. They claimed that the suppliers were bringing in the bricks from other states in large numbers and showing the bills of lesser amount. The official said they had returned the documents of few vehicles and denied the allegations levelled by the suppliers.
