Factory worker commits suicide
Dera Bassi, August 6 He was employed at Syam Indo Company, near Lalru, for the past some time and was living in a rented accommodation in Prem Nagar, Lalru mandi. He was found hanging from a tree near the house this morning. A neighbour of Haq told the police that the latter left home last night and did not return. The body has been kept in the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital. 50-kg polybags seized
In a drive against the use of polythene bags, the Dera Bassi Municipal Council, along with Punjab Pollution Control Board officials, seized 50 kg of banned polythene bags from shopkeepers here today. The drive was initiated following the directions of the Mohali Deputy Commissioner. Use of polythene bags with a width less than 30 microns as banned by the DC. The board SDO, Navneet Dubey, said the step was taken to protect the environment. The shopkeepers had been warned against the usage of banned polybags. Theft bid Mohali: An unidentified person tried to commit theft at an ATM in 3B3 here last night. According to sources, Jasbir Singh, a security guard posted at Standard Chartered Bank ATM, reported to the police that an unidentified person had damaged the ATM machine and tried to decamp with cash box. A police official said the matter would be solved after viewing footages from the CCTV camera provided by bank officials. A case has been registered and started further investigations, he added. |
New India Assurance co. told to pay
Rs 30,000
Chandigarh, August 6 The forum comprising its president PD Goel and members Rajinder Singh Gill and Madanjir Kaur Sahota directed the respondents to pay the claim of Rs 3,73,150 after deducting the depreciation at the rate of 10 per cent to Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Ltd as the vehicle was hypothecated with them. The complainant, Sita Ram, submitted that his vehicle was stolen from Mahavir Park, Bahadurgarh, and a case was registered at the Bahadurgarh police station. The complainant submitted a claim for Rs 3,73,150. He averred that he supplied the documents, including the final report, bank statement and sale invoice of the vehicle as required by surveyor and loss assessor of the respondents. In his report, the surveyor stated that the vehicle was recovered and was parked in Aizol (Mizoram). However, the vehicle was not recovered despite the best efforts made by the police. The complainant informed the insurer after a gap of seven days of the theft of the vehicle, so the claim was not payable as per the terms and conditions of the insurance policy, the counsel for the respondent said. He pleaded that there had been no deficiency in the service or unfair trade practice on the part of the respondent and prayed for dismissal of the complaint. Counsel for the Mahindra and Mahindra Financial Services stated that a loan of Rs 2,30,000 was granted to the complainant, which was to be paid in 23 equal monthly instalments of Rs 11,860 per month. He said the complainant had failed to repay the loan amount and therefore, he was liable to pay the outstanding amount of Rs 5,66,646 as on January 1, 2011. |

Chandigarh, August 6 The forum, comprising its president PD Goel, and members Rajinder Singh Gill and Madanjit Kaur Sahota, while directing the respondents to pay to the complainant a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh, held that delay in informing the insurance company about an incident was not fatal, therefore, the repudiation of the claim by the respondents was illegal. The forum also directed the respondents to pay Rs 5,000 towards the cost of litigation. The complainant, Des Raj, had submitted that two unknown persons had snatched his Indica from his son at Pehowa, Haryana, and a case in this regard was registered at the police station there. He had also informed the respondents and later a claim was lodged along with all relevant documents. However, the respondents repudiated the claim on erroneous grounds. The counsel for Oriental Insurance pleaded that the vehicle was being used for commercial use for hire and reward, which was in violation of the terms and conditions of the insurance policy. He further pleaded that the robbery of the vehicle took place on September 2, 2009, whereas they were informed about the matter on September 24, 2009; as such there was a violation of the terms and conditions of the insurance policy, which provided for reporting of the incident to the insurer within 48 hours from the date of the incident. |

Rs 10,000-fine slapped on ICICI Lombard
Chandigarh, August 6 The district forum comprising its president PD Goel and members Rajinder Singh Gill and Madanjir Kaur Sahota also directed the respondents to pay Rs 7.04 lakh to the complainant, Jaskaran Singh, a resident of Bathinda, after deducting Rs 30,000 towards depreciation. The forum observed that that the complainant had not infringed or violated the terms and conditions of the insurance policy as claimed by the respondent. The complainant said he had approached the police the same day when his vehicle was stolen. He said there was no delay on his part to inform the police or the respondent. Jaskaran Singh had submitted that he got his Toyota Innova car insured from the company for Rs 7.04 lakh. The vehicle was stolen from a parking lot in Sector 42, Chandigarh, on December 18, 2008. A DDR was immediately lodged with the police on the same day but the police lodged the FIR on April 2, 2009. The complainant averred that he had submitted claim form along with the requisite documents with the respondent. However, despite his several requests and visits, the company did not settle the claim. The respondent in the case did not turn up despite service and suffered ex parte. The respondent had written a letter to the complainant stating therein that the date of loss of the vehicle was December 18, 2008, and the intimation to the police is dated April 2, 2009. So, there was a delay of four months in providing the information to the police whereas as per terms and conditions of the insurance policy, immediate information was required to be given to the respondents. |

Man attacked in road-rage case
Chandigarh, August 6 A 31-year old Panchkula resident, Bhupinder Singh, received an injury in the eye when he was allegedly attacked with the butt of a gun at the traffic intersection by the occupants of a Swift car following a chase. The assailant, who was accompanying a woman in a white-colour Swift car, managed to escape right under the nose of traffic police personnel. The number of the Swift was partially noted down as PB 10 T…. Bhupinder Singh told the police that he was going towards Sector 48 when the driver of the Swift car intercepted him at the traffic intersection near Sector 28 and damaged the windowpane of the car with the butt of his gun. He then allegedly attacked him on the right eye and fled. Singh has been admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. Traffic police personnel at the light point reached the spot and a case was registered against unidentified persons.

y As Bhupinder called the police control room informing that he has been hit with a gun, the message was wrongly intercepted as a gunshot being fired. A huge posse of police reached the scene only to realise that it was not a shooting incident but that of road rage. |

One killed in road mishap
Mohali, August 6 The incident took place when the deceased was returning from Chandigarh to his native village, along with his friend Navkaran Singh on the motorcycle driven by Sukhvinder. While they reached near the 3B2 traffic lights, a tempo was parked on the road. Due to darkness on the road, the motorcyclist failed to notice the tempo and rammed into it. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital where he declared brought dead. |

India disqualified as two ‘sleepy’ amateurs arrive late
Chandigarh, August 6 The Indian Golf Union had selected a three-member team after going through the grind of holding selection trials and then polishing their skills at a conditioning camp held at the National Golf Academy of India at the CGA Golf Range, Chandigarh. The third member of the team was Rahul Bajaj from Noida. As much was expected from the boys, some senior members of the Chandigarh Golf Club had also reached the venue. However, to their disappointment, the notice board read “DQ” in front of the names of the two Indian amateurs. “It was a shameful feeling,” said one of them. According to reports, the Indian golfers overslept and when they finally woke up and reached the venue, it was too late... Team India had been disqualified on the opening day of the four-day event. The hosts won the tournament, which concluded yesterday, with Thailand and Chinese Taipei finishing second and third, respectively. Malaysia, Myanmar, Australia and Sri Lanka were the other countries participating in the tournament. |
GC-11, 3 BRD Air Force share honours
Chandigarh, August 6 Speedy Rony Singh put 3 BRD into the lead in the 48th minute. Rony Singh drew PG GCM-11 goalkeeper Sudhir Singh out and directed the ball into the empty goal. Down by a goal, Government College re-organised their game and went all out to neutralise the lead. Fed by Saminder Singh, Roko Singh in a flash unleashed a powerful shot to level the score. Both teams completed their four-team round robin league. From three matches, Government College for Men secured four points, including one from the drawn match today. Players of 3 BRD Air Force gave an improved performance in their third match. After suffering two successive defeats, the Airmen snatched a point from PG Government College for Men. They finished their league with a solitary point to their credit.
