AN UNUSUAL ACT
Usually, it is the mutual fan club that's gets into action on the eve of any film's release. Bollywood then follows a musical chairs-like pattern — the one whose film is about to be released hosts the screening, A-list guests arrive, shower praise, irrespective of its fate at the box-office!
Parveen Dabbas, actor and director of the film Sahi Dhandhe, Galat Bande did the same — hosted a screening; the film was well appreciated and there was a round of applause also! The only difference in this case was the guests' list, which didn't boast of a single superstar; for that matter…any celebrity. The film was instead shown to drivers and spot boys! On the next screening, college students were welcomed. Parvin and producer wife Preeti Jhangiani had the logic in place, "We sought the opinion from the masses instead of celebrities. The aim of the film is to entertain the audience and the screening gave us a fair idea on how it will be received," says Parvin. And the reaction was several rounds of applause and whistles. Mission accomplished! With an unusual star cast and unusual storyline (that has more of a rural backdrop); an unusual approach to promote the film was required. "But we also publicised the film through Twitter. It's a kind of a film that we have to talk about to generate curiosity in people. So, we used various mediums," comes from Parvin who was in Chandigarh along with Preeti Jhangiani and other actors to promote the film on Tuesday. Coming to the storyline, it's about four boys — Sexy, Ambani, Doctor and Rajbir, who are out to earn money the unusual way. In a bid to do that, they kidnap, amputate someone and even makes an MMS of it. There are gang-wars, shoot-outs and wrestling, but ironically whatever they do is categorised as Sahi Dhande. It's only the men who are bad- Galat Bande. A dialogue from the promo of the film emphasises on the same — Hum badmaash hain kaminey nahin. Parvin explains, "The boys indulge in unlawful activities, but are not bad people. There is a difference between being badmaash and kaminey," which is, "A badmaash would merely smile at a girl while a kamina would pass a comment." It was challenging for Parvin to direct the film besides acting in it, but it was Preeti who had a complete role-reversal as a producer. "As an actor, I gave shots and then came home free. As a producer, the baggage of work is never left behind." It's a commercial film, which will be well accepted by the audience. "If there was a black and white phase, golden era, disco era, this one is the open phase. Any quality cinema does well at the box-office." Parvin then cites the example of Khosla Ka Ghosla, which again was a small budget film. Shot in the outer parts of Delhi, the dialogues obviously have a Haryanvi accent. And since there are gang-wars, something that we saw earlier this year in Yeh Saali Zindagi, the language will be rustic. Just in case you want an idea, the release date is announced as — 19 th August ko lagegi.

Chandigarh's very own Vansh Bhardwaj will be seen in the film essaying the role of Sexy, one of the four boys. He says about his character, "I play a stylish, colourful and filmy character, who just has three wishes in life." The first wish is to have a beautiful girlfriend and the second is to have a beautiful girlfriend. If you thought we repeated the first wish, "The third wish is to have a beautiful girlfriend." |

A leaf from Tagore’s diary
It was in the early 20th century that Rabindranath Tagore wrote his famous dance drama Chitrangada. A century later, students of Santiniketan have brought the celebrated work to Chandigarh. The dance-drama is a part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Guru Rabindranath Tagore's works, at the Tagore Theatre, Sector 18.
The dance drama has been directed by Indrani Mukhopadhyay, who spoke at length about it. "We have tried to ensure that we retain the tradition of Tagore and his works," she says. The functioning of Santiniketan is something that does extend the feeling of heritage. "Whatever we have learnt in our lives about Tagore is from our teachers. Similarly, we are all making efforts to ensure that the legacy of Tagore remains alive when we teach the same things to our students," Swastika, presently one of the most eminent singers of Rabindra sangeet (pronounced as Rabinda shongeet) says. Talking about the drama, Sandip Basu Sarbadhikarya says, "Whenever you talk about this specific dance drama, as it is basically set in Manipur, you will find a mix of the dance forms on the stage." A part of Rabindra nritya, at one point, a Manipuri dance will occupy one side and Kathakali the other side of the stage. Elaborating on Tagore's concept of songs and dance, Swastika says, "Tagore was very liberal in his thoughts. Wherever he travelled, he picked the dance and music forms and interweaved them into his plays, dances and dramas." The faculty has ensured that the essence of the drama remains. The costumes and the make-up have been recreated out of the photographs of the original dance drama, retained by Santiniketan. Says Indrani, "Even during the early 20th century, Tagore was conscious about woman empowerment. The drama focuses on the inner beauty of women." With the level of experimentation in all fields today, the faculty suddenly got defensive about Tagore. "When you talk of his works, it's not something that has no style. There is a specific structure to Tagore and his works. The essence of the narrative will lose meaning in the hands of experimentation," shares Swastika. Nods Sandip, "It's not possible to experiment in specialised form of theatre." Particular about retaining the originality of the drama, the faculty is clear about very little changes from the original. "Our students have to understand and retain the culture introduced by Tagore," Indrani shares. In the hope to understand more about Rabindra sangeet and Rabindra nritya, Swastika shares her thoughts, "The style was very different. To understand Tagore's music, in particular, you need to comprehend the meanings between the lines. It's something very deep and touches the heart. Culture is very pronounced in his works." In fact, at a very young age Tagore had visited the Golden Temple with his father. "He picked up the grandeur and flavour of the shabads and blended it in his works," says

PEARLS of wisdom
Big and bold; small and dainty, tribal and ethnic — it's easy to categorize jewellery! But does it really lend itself to neat categorisation in a woman's mind? Here's an interesting mix, as we do some 'jewel-talk'. Yes, jewellery does have a mental component too, at least for women! Rhythmic flow
It's almost meditative, says Ludhiana-based Punjabi writer Dr Kulwinder Kaur Minhas. "If there's an array of ornaments, you look at each piece with a studied intent. The gaze gets deeper as each stone studded in a gold (or for that matter silver) ornament unfolds its story. You're lost in admiring the colour, the shape, the size. It's a sensory delight. Your eyes take their fill. Your hands touch some elusive magnificence. And if you're perceptive enough, you can hear your ornaments
rustle lightly against your dress." No dolling-up
Who says jewellery is only about beautifying yourself? If you thought that adorning yourself with a truckload of jewellery was a passport to good looks, it's time to get a reality check. The dolling-up days are over, says the 'aware-woman brigade'. "Jewellery is a style statement. A powerful style statement," believes Purnima Sheth, senior director of Rose, a luxury jewellery brand. "It has that aspirational value too…in a way it completes a woman," she says. Male gaze
"Insignificant." That's the one-word dismissal from Chandigarh-based author Neel Kamal
Puri. "The jewellery part is insignificant," she reiterates. "I don't think jewellery is a big deal. When I
got married, I did not have any jewellery made. There's an overkill of jewellery during weddings. Perhaps, a 'no-jewellery look' might be a terrific style statement." Puri has never missed jewellery. "I think men need to be asked about jewellery. If women are trying to catch the male eye, they need to be told that men seldom notice what jewellery a woman is wearing…It's out-and-out a woman-to-woman thing." Golden asset
She's the woman you'd meet at every corner of the street. She could be your neighbour, your tenant, your landlady or even your boss. Sensuality is alien to her. She's hassled with the daily grind of doing the balancing act at home and office. Well, she's not exactly ambitious when it comes to her career. She just sallies through it to keep the double income going. She'd sacrifice a promotion or two for her family. And not complain. Her jewellery, which is often safely-kept, is her investment, something that she can bank upon at the time of need. Jewellery, for her, is her golden asset. For the brides
n Rose, the luxury jewellery brand, unveiled its festive and bridal collection at the Park Plaza Hotel in Ludhiana on August 2. The collection showcases jewellery in both contemporary and traditional designs. 'My Trousseau My Treasure' collection plays around with gemstones like rubies and emeralds. 'My Rose' is a collection for every occasion and it defines the many events, moods, colours and roles in a woman's life. For those who love to indulge in yellow gold jewellery with settings of precious stones, there is a special collection called 'Touch of Gold'. n And if big rocks fascinate you, then 'Rocks and Rose' is the collection to possess. The beautiful creations from the 'Jadau Collection' are a bride's delight and the uncut diamonds as well as precious gemstones collection from Rose offers exquisite designs to the bride for her special day. The exhibition is on till August 3. |
India's hottest export Freida Pinto who will be seen next in Fox Star Studios Rise of the Planet of the Apes opposite James Franco, loves animals but apparently has a little fear of actually handling them! Freida plays Caroline a primatologist in the Apes saga directed by Rupert Wyatt. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a high octane action-packed thriller, in which dangers of science leads to intelligence in apes and a challenge to humans as the dominant species on the planet. Says the glamorous actor, "I am interested in animals but I don't think I am particularly good with animals because I do have a little fear in me. I don't know what it is or where it comes from, but I love watching animals. I love dogs and I think they are the easiest animals to deal with. In Apes, we did not have to deal with real animals which I feel is one of the highlights of the film!" Well, no wonder Freida enjoyed her experience working on the film having no real animals involved! Catch ROTPOTA as it releases August 5th! — HRM |
Sahara trek for Brangelina kids Angelina Jolie is hoping to take her six children, of which three are adopted, on a month-long trek across Africa's Sahara Desert. The 36-year-old who has Ethiopian-born adopted daughters Zahara and Shiloh, born in Namibia, wants the trip for them so they can get back to their roots, reported a website. "We want to cross the Sahara. It takes 28 days. It would have to be on a camel. I wonder if we could do it in pieces and station the kids along the way? Zahara wants to get back to Africa, and Shiloh too. So everyone takes their turns in their country," Jolie said. The Kung Fu Panda 2 star, who raises the kids with partner Brad Pitt, has often complained about paparazzi following them and so are reportedly buying a "private and discreet" 10 million pound home in London. It has been the best-kept secret for years for many of the Hollywood stars that if they stayed in relatively normal houses in the suburbia of Richmond, they could go around undetected. "Johnny Depp always tries to use the house Brad and Angelina are in at the moment because it is very private and discreet inside. — PTI |
Hollywood actor Jude Law says that he tries to live as normal a life as possible and still uses public transport with his family. The 38-year-old actor, who has children Rafferty, 14, Iris, 10, and eight-year-old Rudy with ex-wife Sadie Frost, as well as 22-month-old Sophia with Samantha Burke, thinks that living a normal life will reduce the attention he receives in his personal life. "I've created a heaven that works for me and my family. I still enjoy a very normal life with my kids. We use trains and buses and that's often the best way. If you build up some sort of psychological bubble around you, I think you're asking for trouble," he said. Despite his worldwide fame, Law said that he doesn't think of himself as a "celebrity" because he doesn't seek attention. "I hate the word celebrity, which means I'm in some messy, mushy sort of bracket with people who have won reality shows and chefs and socialites and it's just not something I see myself as. I don't invite people into my home and I've never courted the press unless I'm talking to them about some work I'm doing. And I don't do that very much," Law said. — PTI |

For the sake of fitness
Manish Goel, who was recently seen in Adaalat and is currently in Bangalore where he will be walking the ramp at Bangalore Fashion week, is passionate about fitness. We speak to him as he discusses his favourite subject and also shares some fitness tips.
Tell us about your fitness regime? I dislocated my shoulder during the shoot of Zara Nachke Dikha and could not workout for a year and a half and was not allowed to do weights. That is when I got inclined to jogging. People prefer to run on the treadmill as it is believed that you will injure your legs jogging on the road. I wear good shoes that makes jogging in the park or on the road comfortable. I even jog when it is raining even though people may think I am crazy but I enjoy it. Now I can do weights three days a week and cardio on other days. I also like doing freehand exercises like pushups, pull-ups and abs. It is also important to work on your legs as some people have a good body but really thin legs. Kickboxing and Thera-band worked for me during my injury. What foods do you include in your diet and what do you avoid? I don't avoid any food but I avoid carbohydrates post sunset. I eat the maximum in the morning little lesser for lunch and least at night. I have a habit of eating two or three biscuits with my morning cup of tea. For lunch, it is just one roti with sabzi and one roti for dinner again. I eat every two or three hours a day but it is something nutritious like nuts, salad or I drink milk. I have sweets only on Saturday which could be kheer prepared by Poonam or a low fat gelato which is my favourite. I also have protein shake pre and post workout even though it tastes really bad. I also have green tea which is very good for health due to its anti ageing properties. What are your problem areas and how have you worked on them? Like most Indian men my abs is my problem area. About eight years ago, I decided that I will knock off all that fat anyhow. Luckily, I managed and I have maintained it well. What fitness advice will you give to your fans? My tip will be- Just love your body. Don't workout just because someone else is doing. Everyone is different and their diet is different and you never know what works for them and what does not. Also, I find it silly when people say that having a good body means you should have a six pack. Don't workout to prove a point. Lastly everyone should workout no matter how busy they are. Who are your fitness icons? I am my own fitness icon (laughs), as I have been fit for more than 12 years now. Co-stars often ask me how I have been so fit. I did a bare body photoshoot for a magazine three years ago and I was the first TV actor to do such a shoot. The photos were supposed to be used inside but the team liked them so much that they use one photo on the cover page.

TAKE: Sulochana On a serious note

Savita ended up having a genuine emotional outburst. Insiders from the set reveal that she kept holding her face and crying for a long time after the scene was shot in the very first take. People got a bit worried when Savita just couldn't regain composure.
