Civic body spent Rs 13 lakh on welcoming ‘VVIPs’

Rolling out the red carpet for politicians, in particular local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal and Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh during the past one year has left the municipal corporation poorer by Rs 13 lakh.

Appointment of 23 guest lecturers withheld
Chandigarh, August 2
In a last-minute correction against the growing hiring of faculty on an ad hoc basis on the Panjab University campus, Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti has “withheld” the appointment of 23 guest lecturers who were shortlisted recently in the department of evening studies. He said the posts would be filled only with regular faculty.

PU engg colleges losing out to top institutes

HSRP slips issued to 148 vehicles
Chandigarh, August 2
The Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) today issued high-security registration plate (HSRP) authorisation slips to 148 owners of new vehicles today. The scheme, which was launched yesterday, took off today with the two vendors, Utsav Safety and Celex Technologies, witnessing a huge rush of orders for the high-security plates.

P'kula water woes
HUDA approves Rs 62 cr for laying pipeline
Panchkula, August 2
In a step aimed at ringing closer Panchkula’s share of water from Kajauli water works, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has finally approved the demand of Rs 62 crore raised by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for laying pipelines in the union territory. The pipeline is to provide Panchkula an additional 3 MGD (million gallon per day), which is aimed at making up for the current shortfall.

Emaar MGF told to refund Rs 56.89 lakh

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Emaar MGF Land Pvt Ltd to refund Rs 56,89,104 along with 12 per cent interest to a Sector 20-based couple who had booked a plot each in their names.

25 escape unhurt as bus catches fire
A bus that caught fire at Kharar on TuesdayMohali, August 2
More than 25 passengers had a miraculous escape when a private AC bus in which they were travelling caught fire near Desu Majra here this afternoon. Sources said the fire was extinguished by the fire brigade and some bank employees also assisted it. There was no fire extinguisher in the bus. However, the exact cause of fire in the AC chamber is yet to be ascertained.

9-year-old succumbs to injuries
Mohali, August 2
Sagar, a nine-year-old boy from Khanpur village, succumbed to his injuries at the PGI, Chandigarh, here this morning. He suffered serious injuries when a high-voltage power cable passing over his house fell on him on July 24. The incident took place when Sagar, a student of Class II at Government School, Khanpur, was playing on his terrace.

Man acquitted of rape charge
Chandigarh, August 2
The court of Additional District and Session Judge Preeti Sahni acquitted a Sector 41 resident of raping a 27-year-old woman. The police had booked Kailash in February 2010. The prosecution had claimed that on February 5, 2010, Kailash had taken his 27-year-old neighbour to his house and raped her after gagging her.

A local court today convicted two accused of murdering a watchman posted at the Leisure Valley, Sector 10.

One booked for fraud

The Mohali police today registered a case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC against Madhu, M/S Jet International Placement Services, SCF-54, first floor, Phase VI, Mohali, on the complaint of Gurvinder Singh, a resident of Naib Colony, Ambala City, Haryana, for duping him on the pretext of sending him abroad.

Dinesh Kumar of Audit General (AG) Punjab beat Abhay Sharma of Audit General (AG) Himachal Pradesh to win the final of the singles veteran category during the ongoing Indian Audit and Accounts Department North Zone Badminton Tournament being held at the badminton court of the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.
Dinesh defeated Abhay in straight sets 21-4 and 21-8. Earlier in the team event final category, AG Uttar Pradesh defeated AG Himachal Pradesh by 3-0. During the singles match of the category, Deepak Saxena defeated Vijay Dauta 21-06, 21-07, while Anurag Sharma overcame Datul Chauhan 21-08, 21-14.
