Killer wanted to ‘save’ Norway
Breivik pleads not guilty in court after shooting 93 people dead on Friday

Oslo, July 25
The man who has confessed to carrying out a bombing and shooting spree that left 93 people dead in Norway will be held for at least eight weeks, half of that in complete isolation, after a closed hearing in which he said his terror network had two other cells.

Anders Behring Breivik pleaded not guilty to one of the deadliest modern mass killings in peacetime, saying he wanted to save Norway and Europe from a Muslim takeover and send a strong signal, but was not trying to kill as many as possible, Judge Kim Heger said after a closed court hearing.

Breivik could tamper with evidence if released, and would be held for at least another two months without access to visitors, mail or media, the judge said.

Breivik made clear in an Internet manifesto that he planned to turn his court appearance into theatre, preparing a speech for his appearance in court even before launching the attacks, and then requesting an open hearing in which he would wear a uniform. Both of those requests were denied.

The suspect staged the bombing and youth camp rampage as "marketing" for his manifesto calling for a revolution that would rid Europe of Muslims, he said. A judge ordered the hearing closed, denying the suspect the chance to the public stage he wanted.

Reporters and locals thronged the courthouse today ahead of the hearing for their first glimpse of Breivik since the assault.

When one car drove through the crowd, people hit its windows and one person shouted an expletive, believing Breivik was inside.

The hearing ended after about 35 minutes.

Peaceful, liberal Norway was stunned by the bombing in downtown Oslo and the shooting massacre at a youth camp outside the capital. He blames liberals for championing multiculturalism over Norway's "indigenous" culture.

"It is clear that there is concrete information that a public hearing with the suspect present could quickly lead to an extraordinary and very difficult situation in terms of the investigation and security," Heger said.

Police lower attack toll to 76

Oslo: Police announced on Monday that they had dramatically over-counted the number of people slain in a shooting spree at a political youth group’s island retreat and were lowering the confirmed death toll from 86 to 68. The overall toll in the attack now stands at 76 instead of 93. Police spokesman Oystein Maeland said higher, erroneous figure emerged as the police and rescuers were focusing on helping survivors and securing the area. — AP

Muslims, Communists were targets of his hate
Shyam Bhatia in London

The Norwegian mass murderer responsible for an estimated 100 deaths in his country had both Pakistani and British connections, it has emerged. But even more sinister is the way his so-called manifesto singled out leading left wing British politicians as legitimate targets for “punishment”.

According to police sources in Oslo, Andres Behring Breivik as a teenager was best friends with a young Pakistani immigrant who hated Norway. He also interacted with teenage Pakistani gangs, even though he was beaten up by them - at one stage suffering a broken nose.

The Pakistani connection was suspended or broken off when he was 16 and decided to focus more on his school work. Soon afterwards he seems to have been befriended by an Englishman called Richard, the founder of an anti -Muslim secret society that draws its inspiration from 13th century European knights who fought the Muslims during the Crusades.

In his 1,518 manifesto, 32-year-old Breivik describes himself as the modern heir to those same medieval knights, explaining that he wants to drive out all Muslims from Europe by 2083, the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Vienna when the muslim Ottoman Turkish army was defeated by Christian soldiers.

What is even more chilling in the part terrorist manifesto and part autobiography, datelined London 2011, is the way in which leading leftist British politicians are identified as “Category A and B traitors (62,216 in the UK)” who should suffer the death penalty for allowing Islam to spread in Europe.

Former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair are criticised for hiding a plan to make Britain more multi-cultural by allowing in more immigrants.

Even Prince Charles comes in for criticism because he supports the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies - funded by the Saudi royal family - which demonstrates that “our traditional elites are colluding with them against us”.

It is another ex-British Prime Minister who gets the full brunt of Breivik’s rage. Listing Gordon Brown’s picture next to that of Hitler as one of the criminals who failed to stop the spread of Islam, Breivik adds Brown was “colluding” with Islamic terror groups by turning London into a “the global centre of Islamic banking.”

Finally, his manifesto includes a plan to forcibly convert or repatriate all Muslims in Europe.

Hotel maid in Strauss-Kahn case comes out in the open

New York, July 25
The New York hotel maid who accused former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of attempting to rape her said in an interview published on Newsweek’s website yesterday that he appeared as a “crazy man” and attacked her when she entered his room.

Nafissatou Diallo also gave the newsmagazine and ABC News permission to identify her by name. The magazine interview marks the first time the 32-year-old Guinean immigrant to the United States has publicly spoken to the media since she shocked the world with allegations that Strauss-Kahn emerged naked from the bathroom of his luxury suite on May 14 and forced her to perform oral sex.

“I want justice. I want him to go to jail,” she said in excerpts from the ABC News interview.

“I want him to know that there is some places you cannot use your money, you cannot use your power when you do something like this,” Diallo said.

Diallo also acknowledged "mistakes" but said that should not stop prosecutors from going forward. “I never want to be in public but I have no choice,” she told ABC News, adding “Now, I have to be in public. I have to, for myself. I have to tell the truth.”

Diallo said she saw Strauss-Kahn appear naked in front of her when she opened the door to his suite. He was like "a crazy man to me," she said.

"You're beautiful," she reported Strauss-Kahn as saying, and said he attacked her despite her protestations.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, has repeatedly denied all the charges against him. In a statement to media yesterday, his lawyers called the interview a last-ditch effort by the maid and her lawyers to extract money from Strauss-Kahn.

The interview comes after her credibility was thrown into question when Manhattan prosecutors revealed Diallo had told authorities numerous lies, including fabricating a story about being gang-raped in Guinea in order to gain the US asylum. She also changed details of her story about what happened following the purported assault.

French newspaper France Soir reported in a front page headline that David Koubbi, the lawyer for French writer

Tristane Banon, who has accused Strauss-Kahn of a 2003 sexual assault, had met with Diallo. It added only that he "was impressed by her courage." — Reuters

Pakistan plans to add 24 N-missiles to its arsenal

Islamabad, July 25
Pakistan plans to add 24 nuclear-capable, short-range missiles capable of hitting all major Indian cities to its arsenal this year, reflecting a urge in the security establishment to seek “strategic parity in the region”, according to a media report today.

This will be the highest number of missiles Pakistan has ever produced in a year if the government achieves the target, The Express Tribune newspaper quoted its sources as saying.

The air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles will be able to hit targets at a distance between 700 km and 1,000 km, thus putting nearly all major Indian cities within their range, the report claimed.

The plan is in line with Pakistan’s official policy of having what is rhetorically called “maintaining a minimum deterrence”, especially against India, the daily quoted sources as saying.

The Strategic Plans Division (SPD), the body that oversees Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, is supervising the production of the new missiles.

The SPD works under the National Command Authority, which is nominally headed by the Prime Minister and has the three service chiefs as its members. — PTI
