WARD 4
Only assurances, no development

Jalandhar, July 21
Despite claims of providing every civic facility by the authorities, residents of Ward 4 are a harried lot as all that they have got are assurances in the name of development works in this new ward.

While the majority of the colonies of this ward seek immediate attention in terms of providing civic amenities, the rest are suffering in the absence of any timely repair works. From the busy Gujjapeer road to Govind Nagar, New Govind Nagar and Basti Pure Khan all that meet the eyes are damaged roads, non-functional streetlights, stagnant water and piles of garbage.

Residents of the Gujjapeer road area, situated on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway, are the worst affected as huge potholes, scattered garbage on the either sides of the road and overflowing sewage have been creating problems for them.

And this despite the fact that a foundation stone at the entrance of the Gujjapeer road was laid by Mayor Rakesh Rathore in 2008 for the reconstruction of the road.

“It is a hell of an experience commuting on this road. The sewage keeps on flowing every now and then leading to stink and the potholes just add to our woes. During rains this entire stretch leading to our houses fills with knee-deep water, but surprisingly the councillor never bothered to reconstruct this road,”said Chaman Lal, a shopkeeper on this road.

At Basti Pure Khan, Kusth Ashram and the Gujjapeer road most of the streetlights are non-functional and the roads are poorly maintained. “Owing to the non-functional streetlights, it is very difficult to commute through these areas during night.

Even the councillor is not available to listen to our problems. Rather it is her husband who works on her behalf,” a resident said. The residents, too, remain in a dilemma as whom should they approach for their problems - the councillor or her husband. The councillor of the ward, Rimpi Prabhakar, remains missing, while her husband Bhagwant Prabhakar is the one who works on her behalf. Even when contacted by this correspondent, Rimpi Prabhakar was not available. Her husband Bhagwant Prabhakar spoke on her behalf. When asked about the councillor, her husband said, “You can talk to me for any information about the development works.”

However, when asked about the development works, Bhagwant Prabhakar, said, “We have spent Rs 6 crore on development works in our ward. Some of the works are underway and they will be completed soon. We are about to start the patch work and laying of tiles on the Gujjapeer road next week.”

Councillor claims

  • Rs 6 crore spent on development works
  • Four tubewells established at Aman Garden, New Gobind Nagar, Preet Nagar and New Aman Nagar
  • Kailash Nagar Colony completely developed with proper drinking water facility, streetlights, good road network and sewerage system
  • Sewerage laid at Basti Pure Khan, Aman Nagar and Amar Garden colonies

Freedom fighter’s statue awaits unveiling

Jalandhar, July 21
The Municipal Corporation (MC) authorities seem to have got so busy with their work that they have perhaps forgotten that the statue of freedom fighter Gopal Singh Quami that they had shifted from Rainak Bazaar to Sky Lark Chowk about two months back is to be unveiled.

Even as scores of dignitaries keep visiting the roundabout daily since it happens to be in front of the Circuit House, no one has bothered to look into the matter. The statue of the man, who had spent 13 long years in prison fighting for the nation’s freedom, has been covered with polythene sheets ever since.

The statue was shifted to the new location as the family of the freedom fighter had claimed that the Rainak Bazaar site was not suitable for the statue as visitors to the market area litter all around, which caused disgrace to the statue. The statue of the Babbar Akali Movement activist was erected in the market in April, 2005.

Sources in the MC revealed that there were plans to get the statue unveiled by former Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia but ever since he was divested of the powers, they changed their plans. The officials are now awaiting a nod from Chief Parliamentary Secretary K.D. Bhandari or Deputy Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, Bhagat Chunni Lal to perform the ceremony.

A PPCC member, Manoj Arora, commented on the issue, saying, “The delay in unveiling amounts to an insult to the freedom fighter and his family. Such an activity hardly takes time and should have been done on priority.”

Maninder Quami, grandson of the freedom fighter, said, “I have been constantly pursuing the MC officials for the inauguration of the statue. Now I have been told that they were busy with the visit of the Deputy Chief Minister tomorrow and would finalise the programme thereafter.”

Viney Bublani, MC Commissioner, said, “We are planning to get the statue unveiled in a week’s time. The family had met the Mayor in this connection recently.”

Wonderland becomes more fascinating
Deepkamal Kaur/TNS

Jalandhar, July 21
Theme park Wonderland has become all the more fascinating this summers attracting lots of youth, families and school trips for a day’s break from the hot, humid weather. The water park has new slides. The rain dance building has got a new wooden finishing on the facade. The Haunted House has become more scary. A new building with a castle-like design has come in the dry rides area.

The entire arrangement of rides in the children pool has changed. A new unit of four slides has come up in this two-feet deep pool section. All four slides are of the height that anyone of the age six years to an adult can enjoy without the use of any inflated tubes and any help.

While one of the slides takes turns and the user falls slowly in a controlled way, the other one is round like a straight, blind tube. The third gives the visitors a bumping ride. The fourth one, which is nearly 10-feet wide, is where the youth and children enjoy the most. The family members or a friend group can sit together in a row at the starting point and enjoy the thrill of a downhill race. In fact, children enjoy making various poses as they slip down the slope.

The rain dance room, equipped with DJ, wooden floor and dim, jazzy lights, too, is quite enjoyable. There are separate entry timings in the room for families or boys so as to check any untoward incident.

The Haunted House, which was already a part of the dry rides has been made all the more scary, with five moving fiery ghosts donning blood-stained clothes added into it. These ghosts have been erected in such a way that they try to pounce on visitors with their long-nailed stretched-out hands as one tries to move ahead.

The best part, however, is the lush green, well-pruned lawns all around. Kulwant Singh Virk, owner of the theme park, said he was trying his best to bring in innovative ideas.

He said the water used in the park was being constantly filtered to ensure maximum hygiene. A compulsory shower at the entrance and exit further ensured that the visitors were taking minimal germs inside the park. He said the treated used water was being discharged in the garden area to water the lawns and plants. “The water was not being drained out. It was instead also given out to villagers around for irrigating their fields,” he added.

Lal Badshah Fair
Traditional drink still finds many takers

Nakodar, July 21
Even as the Lal Badshah shrine chief Hans Raj Hans had instructed devotees to keep intoxicants off the shrine premises this year, bhang (cannabis) stalls dotting the approach road immediately outside the shrine, played a bit of a dampener to his no-drugs plans.

The first sound that met the ears of devotees entering the shrine, was the resounding tinkle of ghungroos fitted to the pestles of vendors grinding bhang in their mortars.

Talking to The Tribune, Joginder Kaur, who has been selling bhang for the past five to seven years at different Punjab fairs along with her husband, said, “We have been selling bhang rotis and shardai at fairs for the past seven years. There have been times when the police drove us away, but this year, it was smooth sailing.”

Kaur said, “The sale is good at the Lal Badshah fair but the drink has also got a lot many takers at the other fairs at Anandpur Sahib, Naina Devi and Gugamari in Rajasthan where it is a hit with the masses.”

Baldev Singh, another Bhang vendor said, “I have been in the business for the past seven years. People have always been fond of Bhang and here too I find at least a 100 customers a day.”

Talking about the issue, shrine chief, Hans Raj Hans said, “We just started working on the prohibition of drugs this year. It would take a bit of time to completely put an end to an age-old practice. But we did not get off to a bad start. I had issued strict instructions to my sevadaars to be polite with anyone using intoxicants and I believe they have had considerable success.”

While talking to The Tribune, SHO Nakodar Surinder Pal Singh said, “We never heard of anyone selling bhang. Shardai is always sold, but there was no bhang stall at the fair.”

Jalandhar, July 21
While the first day of the Lal Badshah fair was disappointing for musical puritans, the second and third day brought in relatively better performances from artists and singers, with the audiences getting glimpses of the Sufi ecstasy Hans Raj Hans had talked about on the intervening night of July 19th and 20th.

While the concluding day of the fair saw fiery performances from artists like Kanth Kaler, Ranjit Mani, KS Makkhan, Balraj, Durga Rangeela and Satwinder Bugga yesterday, hordes of women sat fanning themselves with traditional Punjabi pakkhis in the sultry heat of the stuffed and inadequate pandal, listening to their favourite performers.

The day was marked by maximum crowds at the fair, making shrine chief Hans Raj Hans remark, “We had no clue we would get so many people. We would arranged a bigger pandal if we had the slightest clue.”

Previously, during the second day of the fair, the audience saw back to back performances by commercial singers like Nachattar Gill, Ranjit Rana, Sukhvir Rana, Sheera Jaswir, Ranjit Kaur, Harjit Harman, Kamal Khan and star kids of the Punjabi music industry – Lakhwinder Wadali and Jasdev Yamla, sons of Puran Chand Wadali and Yamla Jatt, who have grown up to enjoy immense popularity among the Punjabi masses, like their fathers.

While Wadali’s voice has clearly matured over the ages, Jasdev Yamla, with his folk voice and tumbi, is also no less than a revelation.

As people enjoyed rides and got a peek into their destinies from future-telling robots at the fair; on-stage, singers paid musical tributes to Bapu Lal Badshah amidst announcers clamouring for lost parents and children.

In the evening, the shrine was thronged by qawwals. While the performances began with a Shehnai recital by Ali Abbas and his group, they were followed by a recital by Bhai Gulbhagh Singh, Bhai Davinder Singh and Bhai Iqbal Singh.

Through the night on the second day, qawwalis were performed by Vaneet Sharafat, Naseeb, Neele Khan and Surmandeep along with their groups.

Neele Khan’s Sufi wisdom was a major crowd puller. His diction and style wooed many as he sung tributes like is kudrati barat ke, Shahe mardane ali and aisa naksha pake sajna tera.
