Pre-poll sop: Power connections for illegal colonies

With the Punjab government approving the proposal to provide new electricity connections in unauthorized residential colonies in the state, real estate developers - especially of the fly by night kind, have reason to rejoice. However, planned urban development and regulated growth will become the first casualty of this populist measure of the ruling SAD-BJP coalition, which has its eyes on the next assembly elections.

Legislator warns erring officials

Maintaining that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had directed Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPC) authorities to grant power connection to all dwelling units in localities situated on outskirts of various villages in the region, Dakha legislator and SAD in charge for Gill constituency Darshan Singh Shivalik warned those officials, who have been harassing applicants on flimsy grounds.

‘Right to Services Act to take effect from August 15’

The Punjab government has enacted the Right to Services Act which will come into force from August 15 this year so as to ensure delivery of some 67 services to the people of the state in a fixed time frame.Making this announcement at a public function after laying the foundation stone of the main road in Vishwakarma Colony here today, the Punjab minister for Jails, Tourism and Cultural Affairs Hira Singh Gabria claimed that the new legislation would provide "real independence" to the people and free hem from corruption prevailing in the government departments. "Under the new legislation, the officials concerned or employees will be held personally accountable for causing delay beyond a stipulated period, and will also be liable to imposition of penalty of Rs 500 to Rs 5000."
Central excise officials raise voice against stagnation

Inauguration plaque uprooted, abandoned

The ongoing work on the Lakkar Bridge has left the entire Bhadaur House market in
disarray. Even the inauguration plaque of the market has not been left untouched. The plaque was removed soon after the work started and dumped on the side of a road, leaving the area veterans fuming.

Development takes a toll on Bhadaur House

The Giani Zail Singh Market, also known as Bhadaur House, seems to have lost its glory in the maddening race of development in the city. The first planned market developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), Bhadaur House was inaugurated in March 20, 1976 by the then Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Singh Talib and the then LIT chairman Shiv Singh Sandhu.

Shinde, president of the All -India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists in a memorandum handed over to Tiwari said, "We have come to know that the Union government is going to amend the Drugs and Cosmetics rules 1945 by inserting additional schedule i.e. Schedule HX in the rules. The schedule has two parts. Part A has 16 antibiotic drugs. These medicines should be sold directly by drug manufacturers to the tertiary care hospitals. And part B has 74 drugs and formulations that can be sold on the prescription of registered medical practitioners in duplicate."
Residents accuse parking contractor of overcharging motorists

Residents of the city have accused contractor of the parking lot at Feroze Gandhi Market of overcharging. The residents have alleged that instead of taking Rs 200 for a monthly parking pass in the market, the contractor is charging Rs 300, which is against the law.

Auditions for karaoke title

Software training programme concludes
Ludhiana: A six-day training programme on statistical software ‘SAS’ organised by the department of mathematics, statistics and physics (DMSP), PAU, in association with National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, culminated here on Saturday. The programme was organised under the aegis of the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) “Strengthening statistical computing for National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS)”, Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI), New Delhi.
Developing comprehending skills
Ludhiana: A picture-reading competition was conducted in the primary wing of Guru Nanak Public School. Sixty-four students of classes I & II participated in it the competition. The objective of the competition was to develop and test the observation and comprehension skills of the students.
