Paid parking: Couple move court
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 17
A Panchkula-based couple - Pankaj and Sangeeta Chandgothia - filed an application in the district courts in connection with the problems being faced by residents on account of the paid parking system in the city.

The applicants have made the municipal corporation and 26 paid parking contractors respondents in their petition. The application will come up for hearing on Monday.

The applicants stated that although they were residents of Panchkula, they visited various sectors of Chandigarh regularly for work as well as leisure.

Pankaj Chandgothia, who is a lawyer, stated that the corporation had introduced the paid parking system in 2007 but even after five years down the line, the system suffered from several defects and deficiencies, leading to harassment of public at large.

He pleaded that there was no willingness on part of the UT officials to solve the problems pertaining to the system. Highlighting the problems, the petitioner said there was no compliance of earmarked spaces for four-wheelers and two-wheelers. Many a time, two-wheelers were parked in spaces meant for four-wheelers and vice-versa.

Similarly, parking attendants seldom guided vehicles through the parking area, resulting in haphazard parking and blocking of way. Also, the parking staff never wore uniforms or IDs for easy identification.

He pleaded that the powers available with the corporation to deal with the offenders were weak and not well-defined, which came in the way of immediate resolution of problems.

After blame game, time for work
Chandigarh Golf Club management has big plans
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 17
Elections to the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) have always been a hectic affair, with rival factions slamming each other with a slew of allegations, both real and imagined.

This time around too, there was no let-up in the blame game when the elections were on. In the end, the group led by Malwendra Singh won.

The new managing committee took over in April and ever since, this committee, like its predecessors, faced a barrage

of criticism for whatever work it had chosen to undertake for the club.

But the president was determined and initiated a series of steps to improve facilities at the club. Repair work had already

started on the 18th fairway and green, which would be completed by the end of August.

The new committee was of the view that a better golf course would encourage golf tourism and promote the game in the city. Towards this end, the CGC wanted to raise the number of student, corporate, NRI and tenure members.

Past month, the CGC hosted the Albatross Junior and Sub-Junior Tournament, which encouraged many youngsters to take up the sport. More such tournaments had been planned for later this year.

The previous committee had set in motion a computerised billing and access control system, which the current committee wanted to see through. The new committee was working towards the welfare of caddies and increased their fees.

The CGC had also signed up with a healthcare company to provide quality medical facilities to all golfers, members, employees and caddies free of cost within the premises of the club.

The academy of golf was started to raise the standard of the game in the northern region. It was inaugurated by Jeev Milkha Singh, also a member at the club.

This academy had scheduled six junior golf coaching camps and would also conduct some complimentary golf camps for

school and college students of the region.

This would widen the pool of successful national and international golfers from the CGC. Till now, professional golfers were not allowed to participate in the management of the club.

With the president proposing to set up a committee from among members to suggest amendments to rules, the participation of professionals in the management of the club might be allowed in duecourse of time.
