The Road Less Travelled…
There is this charm about road trips that is alien to other modes of travel. Here are a select few from Chandigarh who relished each moment.

Three friends set out on a road trip that changes their life for good. They face their fears, share grievances, strengthen their bond and are able to look at life with a fresh perspective. The story of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is about rediscovering the self on an excursion, and what a way to do that-scuba-diving, free fall from a plane; enjoying at the Tomatino festival!

When in Chandigarh last week to promote their film, the actor of the movie said: "Road trips are an adventure. A holiday can't get better than a road trip with friends." The confirmation of the same comes from Chandigarh people, who share some thrilling experiences about their road trips.

Spontaneous fun

Abhishek
Abhishek (in red)

Traveller: Aman Singh, a post-graduation student, with his friends.

Stop spots: A road trip from Grenoble, a town near Alps, to Monaco covering cities like Saihnt Tropez and Cannes.

High point: As against visiting only the major cities of France, we went sight-seeing to the very interiors. The countryside of France is more beautiful than the cities. We travelled along the French Riviera, approximately 1,300 kilometres. We swam in the hot water spring and later had a volcano mud spa. It was 'once-in-a-lifetime' experience that no parlour spa can match."

How road trips score over train or plane journeys: In journeys by public transport, you just touch and go. It's on a road journey on your own that you get to experience the place. You don't need to stick to a particular plan. The adventure lies in the fact that you have the freedom to randomly decide the next station.

Landscape magic

Traveller: VS Kundu, an IAS officer, with friends

Stop spots: A trip to Leh from Chandigarh. They went via Rohtang and came back via Kashmir

High point: We covered 3,200 kilometres in 17 days on bikes. We enjoyed driving on the toughest terrain in India. It wasn't an easy trip due to the extreme climatic conditions, but when we saw the Pangong Lake, we realised that the effort was worth it. Since we were on bikes, we didn't even get protection from the snow storms, but that's what adventure is all about. It's not just about driving for days together.

How road trips score over train or plane journeys: Road trips provide you the privilege of experiencing the beauty of a particular landscape. The umpteen challenges that you successfully face instills a lot of confidence in you. Your physical and emotional endurance multiplies. It strengthens the bond of friendship when you spend good and tough times with your friends.

Unfettered journey

Traveller: Paramjeet Singh, Internet marketing consultant, with friends

Stop spots: From Chandigarh to Ahmedabad via Ajmer, Pushkar and Udaipur.

High point: Our trip to Ajmer and Pushkar was unplanned. We didn't even have road maps. It was only because of the guidance of locals that we reached our destinations. We travelled more than 1,100 kilometers and even went sight-seeing into various villages just to learn about the lifestyle of people.

How road trips score over train or plane journeys: We travelled at our convenience. We did not follow a time-table or stick to train timings. We saw all the cities or villages we wanted to on our way. A road trip gave us the opportunity to visit less frequented places, which don't even find mention on the tourist maps. A road trip is about exploring new destinations.

Adventure bound

Traveller: Abhishek Vasudev, graphic designer, and his two friends

Stop spots: It took two-and-a-half day's time to reach Goa from Patiala.

High point: We crossed expressways; we went through muddy roads; the whole experience was one big adventure. To spend a night in a tent on a roadside, to eat whatever is cooked was worth its while.

How road trips score over train or plane journeys: The culture of India is so diverse that it changes after every 50 kilometres; therefore the only way to get a feel of it is through a road trip. Either there is a slight change in the dialect or in costumes or plain lifestyle; one can never get a first-hand experience unless one goes on a road trip. You have the freedom to just take any route.

Age no bar
Kshitiz Punia, a young lad from Panchkula, recently bagged the Mr Teen India award in New Delhi
Vasudha Gupta

Khitiz Punia
Young gun: Khitiz Punia

Sixteen is the age where an average youngster is learning how the world works and is trying to comprehend the nuances of studies. For Khitiz Punia, life has been different. At the tender age, he has bagged the Mr Teen India contest in New Delhi. Still high on the dash of glamour quotient added to his life, we speak to him about his dreams and more.

Looking every bit of an adolescent, with the still growing stubble, he spills confidence as he speaks. "I really had no idea that modelling would ever happen in my life," he shares. A product of St Xaviers, he has his eye set on engineering. He quips, "Had it not been for my mother, I would have never even come face to face with the experiences, which tend to change lives."

Kshitiz was selected out of 23 aspirants to participate in the pageant organised by the Adlee Club, an NGO. The competition had three rounds, with eliminations in round two and three, out of which Kshitiz steered ahead and bagged the coveted award. So, how does an NGO fit into a modelling contest? "Once the final auditions happened, we all underwent rigorous training for 10 days. It was during time that the NGO organised an AIDS awareness dramatic dance show to dispel the myths about the disease." Having a passion for dance, Kshitiz performed in five rounds out of the total seven!

"The ten-day training programme was the most phenomenal part of the competition. It was only gradually that we understood the art of walking the ramp, the concept of perfecting our turns and broadly figuring out the not-so-easy world of modelling." The training period saw tips from gurus of the ramp. "Amanpreet Wahi was part of the training process and gave tips on turning as well as carrying oneself with confidence," he says. The show took an international twist when fitness tips were shared, which gave Kshitiz a tough time. "I had no idea how difficult it is to maintain good looks," he shares.

With future plans to do automobile engineering, this lad has his goals clear. "Modelling will go side-by-side," he says. Brushing up on his dancing skills, Kshitiz has been actively participating in various dance shows and competitions. "I never took training, but have a comprehensive knowledge of break dance," he says. With the mother standing strong in the background, Kshitiz is all praise for her. "Mom was the one to encourage and motivate me. She always wanted to be a part of the glamour industry, but now, I will fulfill her dreams," he smiles.

Kiran Punia, the lady behind his success intends to provide all support to her son. "We belong to a conservative family. Coming from such a background, I had to wage a battle with the family members to protect his interests," she shares. With stars in her eyes, she hopes to watch her son grow into a model. "My primary focus is to ensure that he does well in his life. When a lady becomes a mother, she is first a mother and then performs other duties," she says. Having such a bond with the family is rare.

For the son!

Shahid Kapoor
Daddy Dear: Shahid Kapoor

Veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor, who is looking forward to the release of his maiden Bollywood venture Mausam, says he made the film specifically for his son Shahid. "I have directed for television for about five years. So there was a desire to direct a film. I have been writing for a long time. So here came a moment where we decided to go with this film, with this particular subject that was specifically written keeping Shahid in mind," says Pankaj.

"The film was to be made for Shahid. I thought I had to write a film for him," he adds. Mausam is a love story starring Shahid and Sonam Kapoor in the lead roles. "I was specific that the film is to be made with him (Shahid). It is not like I had written the script and I decided to cast him. I had a lot of other scripts and we pondered over whether he should be part of them or a new one should be written for him. It was decided that a fresh script would be written. That is how Mausam happened," Pankaj says.

The film has Shahid essaying the role of an Air Force officer and Sonam plays his love interest. "Like every father, I also want my son to go ahead and excel in life. Shahid has proved himself and has been doing so. His acting ability, cinematic knowledge will come in front of all in the near future. I wish all the success for him," says the National-award winning actor. About casting Sonam, Pankaj says, "While writing this film I had no particular girl in my mind. After finishing the script I started thinking who could be cast. Sonam was the first one to be approached for the role." The film is slated for release on September 16. — PTI

Short game
It’s all about the lie
Jesse Grewal

When one putts on the course we get the same lie as we get on the practice green. The same happens when we practice the Driver - the ball is on a tee at the same height as we get when we practice. So the conditions we play on are similar to the ones we practice. This however is not true for the short game.

Most people create a good lie while practicing and end up with all sorts of lies on the course which they are unable to play well because they have not practiced that particular kind of shot. We rarely see a player practice from thick fringes, bare lies and from divots. To be good at the short game one must find an area where one can practice from these awkward lies and hit a few from different lies every time you go to practice. This will give you an idea how the ball will respond from a particular lie on the course.

Before we make a decision on the type of shot we would like to play we must inspect the lie. The type of shot and the club we would choose is completely dependent on the lie of the ball. Good short game players inspect the lie first and visualize the kind of contact/impact the club would make and the resultant trajectory/flight of the ball.

There is some confusion amongst high handicappers over the definition of a chip and pitch shot. For a lot of them a chip is a shot they play around the green with a low lofted club like a 7 iron. The ball flies less and rolls more. They see good players play the same shot with higher lofted clubs like their wedges and get the same result.

The most important difference is that a chip shot is played with a steeper angle of approach and the pitch with a shallower angle of approach. If the lie of the ball is bad- could be a bare lie , thick grass or in a divot the club will have to approach the ball on a steeper angle so as not to catch the ground behind the ball. We have to hit the ball first and then there would be a divot after the ball. This would make the ball start low. This is done by putting the ball a little back of centre in our stance and getting the centre of your body ahead of the ball (pictures 1 & 2).The weight will be more on the forward foot. The club also gets de-lofted by putting our centre ahead of the ball which helps the ball roll more.

The pitch is played from a good lie with your body centre on the ball or a little behind the ball. The ball position could be in the centre or a little left of centre. The more the ball is positioned on the left side the more loft, we get on the shot. This will give the ball a higher trajectory and a softer landing (pictures 3 and 4).

To be good at the short game inspect the lie carefully and then decide which shot to play.

An evergreen memory

The first time I met actor Dev Anand was in his studio where I had gone to meet him as a newcomer! A picture of energy enthusiasm and a zest for life is what I saw in front of me. He held my hand and greeted me in his inimitable style!

I've always considered Dev Sahib the most good looking and charming hero of his times! How could I forget the "Main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya" star who I could not tear my eyes off when I first saw him on screen! Now, though older, I saw the same zest and charm in the man who promised to work with me soon!

Years later I met him and I was very sure he would not remember my small meeting with him! But he very graciously came up to me at the party and said, “Hey Divya good to see you doing well for yourself! You are the most promising actor we have today." I was pleasantly surprised. “Dev Sa'ab, you remember me?" "Of course I do! You met me in a lively red dress and I remember your smile."

I was floored with his memory and his love and passion to meet and get to know new people!

He called me and said, "Dev would like to work with you! Mazaa ayega tere sath kaam kar ke." before I realised I was truly inspired by the sheer enthusiasm of t veteran to make movies! His films of late have not been received well but the fact is he is still making movies! With the passion he always did! The way he pampered all the actors, explained the shot in the typical Dev Anand way and the energy on the set was something I'd always cherish, once in my life I cud say. I. Worked with the man himself! Me, Naseeruddin Shah and Jackie are doing Dev Sa'ab's next Chargesheet! He tells me, “Bahaut accha kaam kiya, tu pehle aayi hoti to meri heroine hoti kisi film mein!"

I just went dreamy eyed! Wish I could have been in the times of Madhubala, Nutan or Waheeda, to have worked with him as my hero! But this was fun too! I enjoyed each moment working with the 84-year young evergreen hero, totally overwhelmed! As I moved out of the set and I saw Jackie Shroff whose a big Dev Sa'ab fan, sitting on his car bonnet with loud music playing and the song was...dil ka bhanwar kare pukaar, pyaar ka raag suno re. Be healthy for love

Do you want to improve your sex life? Then, get rid of your unhealthy habits. A study has indicated that overeating; being sedentary, smoking, and drinking booze can dampen your sex drive and improves your odds of not having any sex.

A study has found that the vices that contributed to sexual dysfunction in men and unhealthy lifestyles are more common among both men and women who aren't sexually active.

Danish researchers surveyed more than 5,500 adult men and women and found that unhealthy habits increase the chances of not having sex by up to 78 per cent in men and 91 per cent among women.

Among the men in the survey who had sexual partners, those with a large waistline had a 71 per cent increase in the risk of sexual dysfunction. Hard drug users had an 800 per cent increase in risk. For women, those who smoked hashish had three times the risk of losing the ability to climax during sex.

"Hopefully our findings can be used in future counselling of patients with unhealthy lifestyles," said researcher Morten Frisch of Statens Serum Institut in Denmark.

"Knowing about the possible negative consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle to one's sexual health may help people quit smoking, consume less alcohol, exercise more and lose weight," added Frisch. The study has been published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. —ANI

Hope someone is listening, Shweta.

Vamps shake a leg

Aashka GoradiaAshita DhawanAashka Goradia, Meghna Malik and Ashita Dhawan floored the audience with their moves at Zee's 4th Gold Awards 2011. The trio proved they were a bunch of talented dancers as they rocked the stage with oomph and panache. While Aashka Goradia put Deepika Padukone to shame with her sensuous Dum Maaro Dum ditty, Meghna Malik became a darling of the crowd by doing a Priyanka from Saat Khoon Maaf. Ashita Dhawan's Aali Re Saali Re from No One Killed Jessica had enough punch.

Someone's loss, someone's gain

Anuj Sachdeva was on a break post Bebo and he was offered the lead role in Zee's Sanskaar Laxmi. But we hear he agreed initially only to back out when he was needed to shoot the promos. The channel and production house then signed on Shakti Arora. Anuj said that he wanted to do the show but wanted a week to sort some things. Well his loss is Shakti's gain.

Hot rumour in telly town is that Sushant Singh Rajput aka Manav in Pavitra Rishta might opt out of his hit television show. Get well soon

Additi GuptaTelevision actress Additi Gupta, who was last seen in Sangini, was enjoying her break with her family members and friends but recently when we called up Additi, we learnt that she is suffering from viral fever. She suffered from a bad cold and even lost her voice. Well, Additi take care.

Confession time

Mahesh Bhatt on Emotional AtyachaaThis season, while taking relationships to a different climax the show reiterates the basic fears and doubts of youngsters regarding commitment, trust and honesty for their love.

The celeb guests for this week on Emotional Atyachaar 3 are none other then the inimitable Mahesh Bhatt along with his superstar nephew Emraan Hashmi. The duo will be seen interacting with the lead and giving their opinion on the case as our love guru and host Pravesh Rana accompanies them. During the shoot of the episode, Pravesh Rana who was chatting up with Mahesh Bhatt on the issue of infidelity asked him a personal question - Has anyone ever cheated on you? Instead of appearing perplexed and avoiding the question, Bhatt took it in his stride as he calmly stated on national television, "Somebody must have, but who says that I have been faithful"! Pravesh was taken aback with Bhatt's candid response and was impressed by his straightforwardness.

Maybe our youngsters should take a cue from Bhatt on how to be straightforward and honest about one's relationships instead of taking the abusive and backstabbing route.

Star Track
Item check list!

We know only half the year is over but we already have a fair share of item songs with item boys and item girls. We do a round-up of the novelties so far!

The right chord

Aamir Khan in Delhi Belly: I hate you (like I love you) has become a rage this year. The song has an uber cool retro feel and tune. Aamir shakes a leg with pretty dancer Anusha Dandekar and is seen in some wacky avatars. The song is composed by Ram Sampath. We love the video and we love the combination of its desi qawalli beats and lyrics combined with disco beats. It is pretty funny.

Three and counting

Mallika Sherawat in Double Dhamaal, Thank You, and Bin Bulaye Baaraati: Mallika has been seen in three item songs already. She is a good dancer and has a body to kill for. So who better than she showing off her voluptuous frame in skimpy clothes while moving like a graceful snake? She has the confidence to do it. She did Jalebi bai in Double Dhamaal, Raziya in Thank You, and Shaalu in Bin Bulaaye Baraati. Jalebi bai is the most popular of the lot.

Thumbs up

Yana and Jacqueline Fernandez in Murder 2: Yana’s ultra-hot and unabashedly sexy song titled Aa zara opens the movie. She looks gorgeous and sexy in her skimpy black clothes and we envy her smooth dance moves. Nobody sings item songs quite like the versatile Sunidhi Chauhan does. Jacqueline Fernandez shows her uninhibited moves in the promotional video for the movie. She is amazingly flexible, thanks to her Yoga lessons (with Payal Gidwani Tiwari). We also cannot get over how stunning she looks in the video.

Wrong moves

Shah Rukh Khan in Always Kabhi Kabhi: We have no clue why he produced the movie (okay, because his best buddy’s daughter Zoa Morani wanted to act). To add some zing and have a promotional advantage, he introduced the movie and did an item song in it. Not only does the song Antenna have no tune or catchy lyrics, the problem is that it plays in the climax of the movie. One is so relieved that the movie is over that there is no patience or inclination left to see SRK’s smooth moves or hear the bad song again.

At home with item

Ranbir Kapoor in Chillar Party: We adore Tai tai phiss and the way it has been used to promote the movie. Ranbir Kapoor is so versatile and talented that he is completely at home, no matter what he does. He plays a tapori as if he were born on the streets. The song closes the movie on a very entertaining note. Amit Trivedi has a hit record and this catchy song has been composed, sung, and written by him.

Welcome back

Raveena Tandon in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap: This Vishal-Shekar composition was a fitting comeback for ravishing Raveena. She has lost weight and looks stunning. She is wearing normal clothes in the song and we love the way she moves; she is clearly enjoying herself. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Chandigarh di star has caught on as a song as well. Pity it wasn’t a part of the movie! —HRM

Smash hit

Zarine Khan and Salman Khan in ReadySalman Khan and Zarine Khan in Ready: Trust Salman Khan to deliver hit music with every movie. Pritam has been Anees Bazmee’s steady composer but this is their first good album since Singh is Kinng. Yes, Character dheela hai is reminiscent of Mohabbat naam hai kiska from Ajnabee but it is undeniably catchy and fun. Salman has made the video very groovy and we love the way he has paid tribute to former stars. Zarine Khan has never looked hotter! The lyrics gel with Sallu’s personality and he simply makes it work with his Midas Touch

Look who’s talking

Sonakshi Sinha is becoming more obnoxious by the day. She is talking about something called Brand Sonakshi. She says she wants to be a simple and earthy Indian girl who is a role model. She wants to be thought of as the ideal daughter and wife. Sinha says she will not wear skimpy clothes or do steamy scenes because she comes from a “conservative family.” Don’t you think this is her way of picking on other actors (who are decent people from decent families) who do steamy scenes and wear skimpy clothes? And with a heavy frame like that, she will not fit into skimpy clothes! Moreover, seduction lies in expressions, not in clothes. It is not that she smiles coyly or wears the abaya in her photo-shoots!

Best foot forward

The actor, who is married to filmmaker Goldie Behl, is especially fond of boots. “There is absolutely no stopping her when it comes to boots. It’s a common joke that her collection is so vast that she can easily open a museum!” added the source. —IANS

Kunal has been been spending a considerable amount of time locked up in his study for good results and enjoying going back to books. “I remember, in school, I used to dread exams but for an actor, every Friday is like the biggest possible exam. So now, every other exam really seems like a cakewalk. And it’s actually great fun going back to books. It takes you back to your college and school days, especially the dozing off. —Agencies
