The bangle story
To begin with, the story sounds so familiar-three daughters of marriageable age, their mother is worried about their marriage to the extent of suffering from a nervous breakdown, a doting father who treats them no less than sons....At any point of time, a dozen serials have the same story running with slight changes, inspiration Pride and Prejudice perhaps. Despite all these factors, Kach Diyan Wangan promises to be different, which it is, for the fact that it is a Punjabi soap to be aired on ETC Punjabi. "There is more to it when we say the production is different from run of the mill soaps," comes from the director, Indrajeet Arora, known for his popular soap, Amanat. He explains further, "First of all, the backdrop shifts from the swanky Mumbai studios to the fields and streets of Punjab. Then to further render a real feel to the story, women characters are not all decked up or covered with pancake make-up and they don't conspire against each other." The soap is said to be the first big budget punjabi production. The title of the soap, Kach Diyan Wangan is a metaphor to describe relationships, "Which are as delicate and beautiful as glass bangles," adds Indrajeet. While the crew promises freshness in terms of the storyline, they also pledge to better the standard of Punjabi soaps. Thus, they flew in technicians from Mumbai. "The background score, costumes, make-up, lighting, sound system, editing, cameras, the complete paraphernalia used is of the best quality. The idea was to offer the audience in Punjab a better and different experience," says Ravi Arora, business head, ETC Punjabi. The entire star cast of the show is from Punjab and most of the actors are trained in theatre. Indrajeet has his priorities clear, "Punjabi is an easy language and can be learnt in no time by actors in Mumbai also. But we needed actors who also had the proper Punjabi diction. So, we roped in the entire star cast from Punjab itself." There is Prabhjot Kaur, playing one of the lead roles, who was last seen in Manmohan Singh's Ek Kudi Punjab Di, Shivender Mahal who played father of Neeru Bajwa in Mel Karade Rabba and was also seen in Dharti. The soap also gives hope to actors from Punjab to bag better opportunities here. "Why can't we draw inspiration from South Indian and Bengali TV industries? These are so self sufficient that actors never feel the need to shift their base to Mumbai," says Shivender Mahal. He wishes that taking a cue from this soap, more and more production houses follow. The entire soap is being shot in Chamkaur Sahib. The director plans to shoot a few sequences in Chandigarh also but the story is based in a small town. Ravi Arora says, "It's the story of a middle class family, its place in the society and how it gels with its neighbours, which we could not have projected in a big city. Also, we didn't want to show the same locations of major cities of Punjab. For this reason, we preferred Chamkaur Sahib to Ludhiana, Amritsar or Chandigarh." The producers of the show have been quite flexible with the budget, which they feel is important to set a benchmark for other shows to follow. The story has been written by Jagjit Saini, who has indirectly touched the topic of female foeticide too in the serial. "The prime motive is to entertain the audience, so picking up a topic directly would have meant making a documentary. A loving father and three daughters as a subject would serve the purpose." We hope it does! The show goes on air on July 11. ashima@tribunemail.com |

Writers are born. This applies to 12-year old Azal Dosanjh who has published his first book, a play, Dreaming Kids.He is ready with the book's second part, including a Punjabi version Sufney Lende Bachche. The book has been translated into Punjabi by Jaswinder Singh. The illustrations of dramatic narratives on every page are by another painter Ekam Pannu, a Class 11 student at DAV school Jalandhar. One day my mother Kamalpreet Dosanjh locked me in a room as I was not in the mood to attend school. The time spent alone got my sole attention towards penning my dream into a play. The thematic content of the play, now in published, is nothing but the articulation of ideas from my daily life." Since my father Sushil Dosanjh, a Punjabi writer liked plays, I thought it to be the best gift to him, he says. He not only made his father proud but also the likes of Sahitya Akademi award winner Mohan Bhandari, Anup Virk, Thespian Dr Sahib Singh, Gurbhajan Gill, Dr Sukhdev Sirsa and others who came all the way to bless Azal at the launch of his book. Azal says the accomplishment has inspired him to write more. He might come up with his next work very soon. |

You may be wondering why the cute and chirpy girl, Shehnaz Tressuriwala was not around for promotions. Well that's because she was abroad. But she made sure that she would be in India for the promotion of the film along with the star cast. She bagged many compliments for the film. At the success party of Delhi Belly she gives us her take on the euphoria before and after the release of the film. Delhi Belly Oh I love the film as much as you did (laughs). It was just amazing! When Abhinay approached me for the film I was so happy and excited to be a part of it. We are glad that the audience loved our film. I am so happy. Incredible India I don't know where my career will head but if I get some interesting offers from Bollywood I will take it up. The concept and character needs to get my attention. I love India as I have grown up here and feel quite comfortable in India. US and India Frankly speaking US conducts fairer auditions as compared to India. There is a lot of competition too, but you are selected on the basis of your talent. Here its based on contacts and who has the best body. There are a lot of fresh faces in the industry too. On the director Abhinay has been a very supportive and a funny director. He is humorous and that's what has helped him in making the film. On the very first day of my shoot he played a prank on me, he pretended to shoot the climax of the film with a paper bag over my head. I also had to cry bitterly. When he said action I started crying, he shot it and then he had a hearty laugh. It was so funny. Aamir Khan Everyone loves Aamir so do I. He was so supportive, caring and he is so cute. I can't tell you how good he has been to me. He told me that I was behaving like a school girl who has a crush on him. He is a great producer, director and actor. Star cast Everyone was hilarious during the shooting, right from Imran, Vir to Kunal but the one I bonded well with is Purna. She is so nice that we enjoyed shooting. Everyone belonged to theatre and acting is our passion. The whole unit was fresh. |
No great expectations
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt gave actors like Sushmita Sen, Kangana Ranawat and Mallika Sherawat their first big break in the Hindi film industry, but they never worked with him after their first films. The filmmaker is not complaining because he doesn't expect them to continue to work with him out of gratitude.
If Sushmtia got her first break with Bhatt's 1996 directorial venture Dastak after winning the Miss Universe crown, Mallika and Kangana made their Bollywood debuts with his production ventures Murder (2004) and Gangster - A Love Story (2006) respectively. "They were never mine who left me. They came to make their career and went ahead through me. I was never their destiny. It's planet Bollywood. I don't expect any gratitude," Bhatt, who doesn't direct movies anymore but just produces them, said. "I don't let anyone stand in front of me if he or she doesn't have the potential. So I don't expect them to be grateful and come and work with me," he added. Known for directing critically acclaimed films like Arth (1982), Saaransh (1984) Naam (1986), Daddy (1989), Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Sadak (1991), Naajayaz (1995) and Zakhm (1998), the 62-year-old will continue making films with fresh talent. "I have not retired but have said no to direction. Direction is part of life not the entire life. I have sung my song. I have done more than 50 films. How many more? You know every hero becomes a bore, every filmmaker has time, frame when he sings the song then he becomes repetitive. Before people say get out, you should yourself stand up and leave the auditorium. "I have the desire to make feature films and I am enjoying what I am doing now. I like creating people, pushing them, find the potential. If they excel, the film will excel," said Bhatt. IANS |

Night ban lifted for Robert De Niro's film
Hollywood star Robert De Niro has been allowed to shoot for his upcoming film The Big Wedding after officials at a town in Connecticut lifted a 13-year ban on night filming. The permission comes as a sigh of relief for the cast and crew of the film. The movies production team applied for a special permission to film the scene overnight.
Movie bosses, who planned to shoot a key scene at a country club pool in Greenwich later this month, were forced to apply for special permission to film overnight to avoid delaying the project because of scheduling issues. Following the request, the authorities agreed to lift the midnight-to-6am filming curfew, reported a publication online. "We have been lucky enough to get a really great cast who are really professional. In the best of both worlds, we'd love to film just in the day," said producer Clay Pecorin. A spokesman for the town's Board of Selectmen said, "I think it's something that we, as a community, should embrace." The comedy, which is scheduled to release, next year, stars Robin Williams, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and Katherine Heigl. The film is expected to do well at the box office. PTI |

Goldilocks in the making?
She has topped many beauty lists but Hollywood star Megan Fox says she wanted to be a blonde in her younger days. The brunette beauty says she envied actresses like Pamela Anderson when she was younger because their lighter locks seemed "exotic" to her, a publication reported.
"I always wanted to be blonde when I was little, like Barbie and Pamela Anderson, but it would really damage my hair.
It was exotic to me, as my entire family has dark hair. If I did it, I would go white blonde - really platinum," she said. The Jennifer's Body star, who is married to Brian Austin Green, said she refuses to take baths and shuns expensive beauty products in favour of Grapeseed oil to keep her skin soft.

Hollywood star Tom Hanks, who opted for the director's chair a second time in Larry Crowne feels acting is like a vacation compared to his stint behind the camera. Hanks first directorial effort was That Thing You Do! The 55-year-old star, much loved for his roles in Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia and Cast Away, has also written and produced his new rom-com, which released in India recently. "Acting is almost like a vacation compared with the workload that a director has. An actor really only has to show people what he's thinking while a director has to start having meetings eight months before the first day of shooting and continues having meetings nine months after it's all over," Hanks said in an email interview. Another disadvantage of being the master of the ship was that Hanks had to show up on time for every shoot. Larry Crowne is about a middle aged man, played by Hanks, who decides to go to college after being downsized. "I wanted to talk about reinvention on an authentic scale. I thought 'What about a guy who has done everything right, but one day he walks into work and they say, 'Nothing personal, but you're fired'?' And that made me think going back to college would be probably the only thing you could do. And then what if Julia Roberts is his teacher?" Hanks said. The two-time Oscar-winner says Julia Roberts was always the first choice because she reminded him of his past teacher crushes and the actor ensured that he gets to say "I Love You" to his teacher this time. Hollywood hell raiser Charlie Sheen is set to star in a rap video. The actor is said to be planning a TV comeback in a show based on Jack Nicholson's 2003 movie Anger Management and has returned to acting with a role in a video for his rapper pals Simon Rex and Brother Marquis, reported a publication online. Sheen, who portrays the role of a grouchy fast food restaurant manager, will be seen chastising the pair as a restaurant manager in the promo for Steak and Mashed Potatoes. Numbers to vie for
Remember the majestic appearance of the sedans owned by Aamir Khan's character in 'Ghajini', all bearing a series of exclusive numbers? How intoxicating that can be! Ask anyone who dreams of not just a dream car but also the exact number he or she wants to name the proud possession with. Yes a lot lies in the number when it comes to the desire to stand out and feel like a VIP. A VIP vehicle number attracts attention just for the reason that it stands out from the ordinary numbers? Certainly not, there is a lot more behind these 'grand' numbers. These are the numbers which run over the minds of the car owners and surprise on lookers. Let's ignore which car you drive and just look at what number you drive! The number game The hit-list of paid numbers is long but there are some pageantry numbers that stand out like 0001, 0007, 8055, 0047, 0172, 0911 and 0022. These numbers stand for the personality of the owner. The number one sure speaks for a winner, 0007 is a James Bond 007 fan, '47' is identified with AK-47 rifle even if it is also the year of our country's independence, 0911 is for the 9/11 attacks while it is also known as the helpline number in the US, 8055 annunciates you as the 'BOSS' (as it represents the Latin alphabet) and '22' pronounced as "bai", the word of brotherhood in Punjabi. A legacy Vintage numbers are another hit. These make a different statement of being short and catchy. The prices are a step above as compared to the (less) exclusive numbers. "I recently saw this number PUC 14, and it was jaw dropping. The number is an abbreviation for Panjab University, Chandigarh, Sector 14," says Akanksha Sharma. She admits that VIP numbers are a hit among girls too. Aiming high An exclusive number not only gives you a dignitary social uplift but becomes your identity. Be it for a luxury car or an ordinary one, exclusive numbers become a landmark in themselves. A number can be identified with your house number, a lucky number advised by a pundit, repetition of any numerical, year personally important to you. Amit Bansal and Varinder Modi have the number CH01AB 0015 and CH03V 0015, respectively, for their vehicles. The reason is they say is that they live in Sector 15, Chandigarh. Pawan Nanda chose the number CH03Y 0037 since someone suggested it as his lucky number. "Many people know me because of my car's VIP number, for me it has the emotional value attached with it since our house number is 14, the entire family owns the phone numbers with the suffix 14. Surprisingly, even my roll number has the number 14," says Parduman Garg. Well his car is numbered PB48C 0014. People don't mind spending thousands and even lakhs to own an exclusive number. The highest bid till date in Chandigarh was in 2010 for '0001' which went up to Rs 10 lakh. The booking price starts from Rs 5,000 for basic numbers to 25,000 exclusively for '0001' followed by an auction. "The number is precious to me, it has given me an identity on the road, people ask me if I want to sell the number but I know its value and will retain it in the future even if someone pays me thrice the amount," says Chanchaldeep Singh Grewal, who has inherited the number PB10CT 0085. "My dad loves VIP numbers. My family owns eight cars and he always got his hand on the number '7' for each of them," says Puneet Gumber who drives the HR24L 7777. He spent a good Rs 1, 30, 000 for the number. "The craze for VIP numbers is more than ever before. Money from the auction last year was Rs 36 lakh, says Registration and Licensing Officer, Chandigarh, Sanjeev Kohli. Every number speaks for itself. It stands for the attitude of the owner of even an ordinary car. |
An average woman packs nearly twice as many clothes as she requires for a holiday, a study has found.A woman needs 34 items for a week-long break, but takes 60 "just in case". It means almost half of the contents of women's bags remain unworn. Around 58 percent of the 2,000 women quizzed said they found it difficult to stick to luggage weight limits, with one in five facing extra baggage costs at the airport. The average woman takes 19 tops, but will wear only 10, and comes home with half her pairs of trousers, shorts or leggings unworn. But that's not enough for 42 per cent who go shopping on holiday. Go easy breezy
To enjoy the monsoon all you need is to be in comfortable clothes. Light and breezy is what girls in Chandigarh are wearing as their style. Kurtis teamed with jeans are the most popular for that Indian look while wearing kurtas with pajamis or leggings comes a close second. Stretchable is the feature that makes them so popular. The leggings available come in vibrant and solid colours like black, brown, pink, red, turquoise, maroon, white, beige and grey. They can either be plain or with designs. This look is liked because it's easy to wear and does not require much effort, says Lina who owns Sui Dhaga boutique in Sector 64, Chandigarh. She says the loose fitting long kurtis are more in vogue as compared to the short ones. She adds that she is receiving several orders for dhoti salwars paired with kurtis. Manish Kochhar, a businessman says girls prefer the kurtas with leggings look nowadays. Lace designs on the cloth are well liked by the girls according to him. Besides this the kurtas are also ornamented with beads and sequins, and also have mirror and patch work. When it comes to the choice of material, the best is pure cotton. Its porous nature helps the skin breathe and thus keeps the body cool. It is a natural fabric and prevents allergies that are caused by synthetic materials, he says. The cotton cloth used is in sky blue, lemon, pink, orange, yellow, light green, red, white and all colours imaginable. According to Kuldip Singh, a businessman, the prints that are in style are flowery, geometrical, digital and tie-and-dye. Kameez worn with a salwar with thick borders of chikan and net work is also in, he says. Rahat Mall, a student from SD College, says since Indian clothes are designed specifically for our physique, they fit well and there are a variety of colours and textures to choose from and then get it designed to your own liking. Gesu Jaiswal, an IAS aspirant says she liked them because they are loose, airy and looks far more elegant than western wear. For Surbhi, a BBA student, Indian clothes are preferable as they tend to make one look slim. Mehak Mahajan, a MCM DAV student, likes to wear Indian clothes because they represent our culture besides being very comfortable. Ethnic chic it is for Chandigarh girls when it comes to dressing for the monsoon. |

Pooja Gor I love to eat bhuttas and crisp pakoras when it pours. I don't like getting wet in the rain as I fall sick quickly but I love going out to eat hot bhutta with lemon and chilly sprinkled on it. The smell of coal when it is roasted is very appealing. Rashami Desai I like wheat ki bhakri which is made by my mom as it is delicious. With bhakri, I like desi acchar (homemade). My mom makes good garlic and mango pickle and I eat this with sip of hot ginger tea.
Sara Khan My food is very usual and I think no will have it but since I love to cook I make spicy porridge whenever I feel like. If I am craving for some sweet during this season, then I make sweet porridge as I find it very yummy.
Neil Bhatt I love to eat in any weather but during monsoons I love to have hot tea. I really can't eat fried food as I have became very health conscious but earlier my food for monsoons kanda bhajiya. I guess not just me but loads of people love hot kanda bhajiya during rains. Neha Sargam During monsoons, it has to be hot and spicy pakoras with tomato sauce along with hot chai (tea). I really like the whole excitement of making bhajiyas during monsoon.
Sushant Singh Rajput When it rains, I love to eat hot aalo parathas and have a cup of tea. I am not at all calorie conscious so it is fun. I still remember the place near Delhi which was famous for yummy parathas and I would drive with my friends to Murthal, 50 to 60 kms away from Delhi, just to enjoy those hot parathas. Jay Soni I am a foodie. I love to eat anything and everything. But the essentials during rains are pakora, chai, bhutta and don't miss the chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce.
Punjab Connect Rakshandha Khan returned to television with yet another Punjabi role in SAB TVs Ammaji Ki Gali. She is excited about her forst comedy venture. She is surprised about only bagging roles of Punjabi women only. The light eyed beauty explains, "Yes it is funny but if you noticed that all my roles be it the positive Tanya Malhotra in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi, the negative role of Mallika Seth in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, and others were of Punjabi women. Even now in SAB TV's Ammaji Ki Gali, I play a Punjabi woman Parminder. I took it on as the show's concept was fun and interesting. The fact that it was a comedy was a bonus and there was no negative role in the show." Doing comedy is a biggie for Rakshandha as she has never attempted it before. "I was a bit nervous before my first shot but soon I got the hang of it. I am enjoying myself. The comedy is not in your face. It is subtle, witty and has funny one liners. It is more intellectual I would say. There are no unrealistic characters, or people talking loudly to pass off as comedy either. My role is of a typical middle class Punjabi woman who wears parandis and Patiala salwars." Complaining a bit, Rakshandha says, "I am slotted and get only Punjabi roles I feel so I stayed away for the longest time. I agree it is ironical that I landed back on TV with yet another Punjabi role but perhaps the challenge is to bring variation in my work. I am glad I am able to perform and get the same feedback from my producers and fans. I have done a positive role as Tanya, a modern yet negative role as Mallika and Parminder is a traditional woman. I wish I got more roles with variations." Does she wish to enter reality shows? "There is far too much reality on TV. The reality of my life is fiction, she quips. Lastly, we query if she was single or dating which she smartly replies, I am happy. HRM
