3-member panel to probe community centre issue

Kharar, June 29
The municipal council has constituted a three-member committee to look into the issue of land earmarked for community centre being sold as a commercial venture. Committee members include MC president, executive officer and assistant municipal engineer.

The committee was formed during a house meeting convened today. MC president Gurprem Singh Romana said colonisers of Model Town had sold the land meant for a community centre as a commercial place. Around three months ago, around half an acre was sold for Rs 4 crore. When the buyer went to the municipal council, Kharar, for getting the map of commercial building passed, official refused his request.

“The officials found that land sold was actually a community centre and hence no map could be passed. We have also issued notices to the colonisers of Model Town,” Romana said. He said the committee would conduct an inquiry and submit a report in the next meeting. On the basis of the report, legal action would be taken.

Domestic help commits suicide

Chandigarh, June 29
An 18-year-old domestic help, Rani, allegedly committed suicide at her employer’s house in Sector 10 here today. The victim was found hanging from a ceiling fan. The police ruled out foul play and said she was suffering from extreme depression.

She was staying in the house of her employer, Pankaj Jain, an advocate, where she had been working for the past many years, the police said.

The incident came to light at 8:30 am, when the advocate’s wife noticed her hanging from the fan in the advocate’s office on the ground floor.

They called the police, which lowered the body and rushed it to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

The post-mortem examination was conducted, which revealed asphyxiation by hanging as the cause of her death.

Rani hailed from a village in Uttar Pradesh and her family was informed of the incident.

“We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the suicide and are investigating. The involvement of anyone in her employer’s family has been ruled out,” said inspector Mahavir Singh, SHO, Sector 3 police station.

Gangrape: Victim was taken to helipad in sec 5

Panchkula, June 29
The two accused had first taken the 16-year-old girl to a secluded place near the DT Mall in IT Park, Mani Majra, but after seeing so many people around, the two took her to an isolated place near the helipad area in Sector 5 and raped her.

The police said the two accused had confessed to have raped the girl after sedating her.

It said the two told the police that after dumping the girl near her house they went to Solan and threw the mobile and other belongings of the girl.

Sources said a team of police officials had been sent in search of the mobile. The sources added that cops were also trying to get email details of the victim to know whether she had been in touch with one of the accused Sahil through Facebook.

A class X student of a private school in Panchkula was allegedly kidnapped and gangraped by two youths. The victim’s elder brother also knew the two accused. The police on the complaint of the victim’s father arrested the accused who had been identified as Sahil Puri, a resident of Sector 2, and a first year mechanical engineering student from Baddi-based private university and Marshal Arora, a resident of NAC, Mani Majra, and a BA first year student of a private college in Chandigarh.

The two accused have been sent to police remand for two days and would be produced in the court tomorrow.

A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 363, 366 and 376 G at the Sector 5 police station. The police has impounded the vehicle which was used in crime. Samples of the two accused and the girl have already been sent to Forensic Sciences Laboratory, Madhuban, Karnal, for forensic examination.

  • After dumping the girl near her house, the accused went to Solan and threw her mobile phone and other belongings there.
  • Cops are trying to get email details of the victim to find out whether she had been in touch with one of the accused.

Mohali, June 29
A head constable of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) on deputation with the Excise and Taxation Department was today caught extracting money from shopkeepers in Sohana.

For the past few days, constable Kulraj Singh while posing as an inspector in the excise department had been fleecing shopkeepers on the pretext of demanding their account books. SHO Sohana Deepinder Singh said he had been booked under Section 170 of the IPC. The shopkeepers bashed him up before being arrested by the police.

2 killed in road mishaps

Ambala: Five persons sustained serious injuries at Dheen village on the Ambala-Jagadhari road when a canter (HR-37C-2000) carrying household goods from Yamunanagar collided with another canter (HR-58-5239), as a result two Maruti cars rammed into them and fell down from the bridge, injuring five persons, including a woman and a child.

On information, the Mulana police reached the spot and rescued the injured, along with the help of residents of Dheen village. The injured who were admitted to MM Hospital were identified as Suraj, Gulzar, Bimla and Beenu. The traffic remained suspended on the National Highway for more than 90 minutes, sources said.

In another incident, Kedar Nath, a resident of Naraingarh, died on the spot, whereas two others, Raj Kumar and Harinder, were seriously injured near Mandaur village near Ambala when their car had a head-on collision with a truck. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot. The Panjokhra police reached the spot immediately and shifted the injured to the Civil Hospital.

In other mishap, a youth, identified as Vikram, who was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, on June 27 when a truck hit his motorcycle on the Hisar road near Ambala has succumbed to his injuries last night.

Jewellery stolen

Dera Bassi: Thieves decamped with cash and jewellery from a shop here last night. Owner of the shop Ram Avtar said he learnt about the incident in the morning when he came to open the shop and found gold and silver ornaments missing. The police reached the spot and started a probe.

Elderly man thrashed by neighbour, dies

Kharar: Seventy-year-old Prakash Singh residing at Rurki Khaam village died after his neighbour allegedly beat him up over a trivial issue.

The police has booked a case against Jatinder Singh on the

complaint of deceased’s nephew Jagroop Singh.

In his complaint to the police, Jagroop stated that on Monday he had gone to meet Prakash Singh, who had been staying alone for the past few years.

The accused, too, reached the place and entered into an heated argument with Prakash over a trivial issue and started bashing him up. The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital but died on the way. The police said it was looking into the matter and efforts were on to nab the culprit.

One held with medicines worth Rs 1.35 lakh

Kurali: The police nabbed a person and recovered intoxicating medicines worth Rs 1.35 lakh from him here today.

SHO (City) Gurmit Singh said 28-year-old Jagtar Singh, a resident of Phase IX, Mohali, who was earlier working with a medicine company, was caught.

For the past one year Jagtar has been selling intoxicating medicines illegally at Kharar and Kurali.

The police put up a naka at Shaheed Beant Singh Stadium, Siswan road, Kurali. A Tavera vehicle bearing registration no HR-68-6095 was checked and the police recovered a large amount of medicines.

Drug inspector was called to the spot. Jagtar Singh failed to produce any permit of the medicines.

The police has recovered Rexo Cuff 1,200 bottles, Fenotil 40,000 tablets, Nemolit 10,000 tablets, Parvonspasm 8,000 capsules and Spasmo Proxyvon 6,912 capsules.

The vehicle and medicines have been seized. The police has registered a case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act against Jagtar.

14 stolen motorcycles recovered

Kurali: The police has arrested two persons and recovered 14 motorcycles worth Rs 7.65 lakh from them.

In a press statement issued here, Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said on June 28, ASI Nirmal Singh received a tip-off that accused Ravi Kumar from Jogianwala Mohalla, Morinda, and Salim Khan from Rattangarh Colony, Morinda, stole motorcycles from different places. The accused used to sell the stolen vehicles in other states, especially Uttar pradesh.

On June 28, when the accused were on their way to Morinda from Mullanpur on a Discover motorcycle (PB 12J-0149), the police stopped them during a naka and found that the accused had affixed a fake number plate on the motorcycle, which they had stolen from Daun Gurdwara Sahib.

The police expects to recover more two-wheelers.

BTS, DAV match ends in tie

The match between Banyan Tree School (BTS) and DAV, Sector 8, finished in a tie during the ongoing St Stephen’s Junior Cricket (U-12) Championship, being played at St Stephen’s, Sector 45, here today.

While batting first, DAV Cricket Academy set a target of 114 runs in the allotted 25 overs. Nank contributed the most with 27 runs, whereas for BTS, Daman and Manam took two wickets each.

In reply, BTS team made the same total as of the opponent team in the allotted overs. Ayush contributed the most with 29 runs. For bowling side, Tanya took four for 38. In the second match of the day, Soupin’s School defeated Tau Devi Lal Academy, Panchkula, by six wickets.

Bharat lifts sub-junior title

Bharat Kalia outnumbered Gaurav to win the sub-junior category title during the 25th Haryana State Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Billiards and Snooker Championship being held in Panchkula today.

In the final match of the sub-junior category, Bharat defeated Gaurav by 2-1. Gaurav after winning the first frame failed to come back in the match. In the last frame, Bharat bounced on a miss by Gaurav to seal the victory.

In the junior snooker category, Sarvesh Suman won the title after defeating Saransh Chaudhary by 2-1. In another match, Sumit Bahl beat Prateek by 3-2. Prateek after winning the initial two frames failed to overcame Sumit in the third frame of the game.

Taking its full advantage, Sumit grabbed the opportunity and won the match a wonderful pot on the black ball to move into the next round.

Three former CHA players to attend probables camp

Three former players of the Chandigarh Hockey Academy (CHA), Sector 42, has once again been recalled to attend probables’ camp to select the senior Indian hockey team for the upcoming international competitions here today.

Preet Inder Singh, Dharamveer Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh are selected to attend the probables camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre, Bangalore, from July 1 to 31.

Notably, city lad and former Indian goalkeeper Baljeet Singh is also given a comeback call by officials to attend the camp, along with ace striker Rajpal Singh.

Playing as the leading striker at right-out position, Dharamveer Singh represented the national team four times, including recently held Commonwealth Games.

Whereas, left-full back and drag flicker specialist, Rupinderpal Singh also represented the nation and was a part of the team in recently held Pre-Olympic Games. While centre-half back, Preet Inder Singh failed to make it to the final list of the team after attending the camp of the Pre-Olympic Games.

On the other hand, Jasbir Singh Bajwa, coach at the Hockey Academy, Sector 42, wished that players should be selected in the national team after giving their best during a month-long camp.

“All three players have already shown their potential of playing at the international level. Selectors know their capabilities well and all they need is to nurture their skills at these kind of platforms,” said Bajwa.

While talking about the comeback of former Indian team goalkeeper, he said, “Baali (Baljeet Singh) after recovering from his eye injury worked hard and deserve this comeback and we all would like to see him playing in the field in the upcoming matches,” said Bajwa.

The sharp-sighted goalkeeper is all set to make a comeback in the Indian team.

SWAC, MC register wins

South Western Air Command (SWAC) and Maintenance Command (MC) register win in their respective matches on the third day of the ongoing Air Force Hockey Championship being held at the 3BRD Air Force Station here today.

During the first match of the day, South Western Air Command defeated Central Air Command (CAC) by 2-0. After converting both penalty corners into goals, SWAC defeated the opponents. Aman Deep drew the first blood in the 32nd minute of the game, whereas his counterpart, Brar doubled the margin in the second half of the game. On the other hand, CAC team failed to convert the chances during the match.

In the second match of the day, Maintenance Command (MC) got the better of Eastern Air Command (EAC) by 1-0. — TNS

Golf Club streamlines coaching programmes

The new managing committee of the Chandigarh Golf Club under president Malvinder Singh has announced a streamlined coaching programme to tap talent with an eye on the 2016 Olympics.

As per the new coaching calendar released by the president along with course captain Col Karan Thandi, the Chandigarh Golf Club Academy will conduct six coaching camps, three each of three-month and one-month duration, starting on August 6.

He called the so-called tiff between professional coaches and management of the club a figment of imagination. “The issue has been blown out of proportion,” he added.

The following is the streamlined golf coaching calendar:

Under academy joint director Ajay Gujral: One-month camp from August 6; three-month camp from September 17; three-month camp from March 24, 2012.

Under academy assistant director Manjit Kochar: One-month camp from October 2; one-month camp from December 18; three-month camp from March 25, 2012.

Tarundeep Singh Chadha of Chandigarh fired yet another steady three over par 73 card to take a one-stroke lead over Manu Gandas in Category A at the midway stage of the Usha Chandigarh Junior Open Amateur Golf Championship on the Chandigarh Golf Club greens here today.

Tarundeep had a two-day tally of 145, with Manu Gandas and Rohan Sharma trailing him by one stroke.

Another city golfer Karandeep Singh Kochhar repeated a six over par 76 card to finish with a tally of 152, a good seven strokes ahead of second-placed Sarthak Kohli at 159 in Category C.

In the B Category for boys, Viraj Madappa fired a two over par 72 to overtake overnight leader Honey Baisoya by a one-stroke margin.

Delhi’s Shreya Ghei continued to lead in the girls’ A Category carding a six over 78 score. Team-mate Gurbani Singh followed the leader four strokes behind after firing a 77 card today.

Ridhima Dilawari’s 81 on the second day saw her sharing the lead with Vrishali Sinha at 166 in the girls’ B Category.

Overnight leader Amrita Anand increased the lead in the girls’ C Category returning a 79 score today.

Digraj Singh Gill carded a 79 to take the lead on the opening day of the D Category competition. Among girls in this category, the leader on the opening day was Arshia Mahant at 92.

Tarundeep sank a birdie on the third, but then he bogeyed the fifth and eighth to be one over 37 at the turn. He fell back further losing strokes on the 13th and 15th. He made amends birdying the 16th, but conceded a bogey in the very next hole for a two over 36 back nine and the day’s card of 73.

Panchkula book berth in semis

In-form opening pair, Ankit and Ajay Strees, helped Panchkula to move into the semifinals of the Haryana State Inter-District Cricket (U-19) Championship being played at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Panchkula, today.

In the quarterfinal stage, Panchkula defeated Chandigarh by five wickets. An unbeaten stand between Ankit Gupta (80) and Ajay Duhan (56) helped the host to move to the knockout stage.

Earlier in the match, batting first, Chandigarh managed to score 176 for eight in the allotted 40 overs. Chandigarh lost the first wicket on the total of 11 runs. A 77-run partnership between Shivam Puri and Deepak helped the team to achieve the target. Deepak Sharma contributed the most 72 runs in the team’s total.

For Panchkula, Abhilash Sharma took three for 33.

In reply, after a slow start, Ankit Gupta and Ajay Duhan guided the team to chase the total before Ajay Duhan bowled out by Paras Singh. For Chandigarh, Paras Singh and Balwinder Singh took two wickets each.
