Cagers have nowhere to play
Courts at Sec 7, 42 under construction for a long time
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 22
There are several plans to enhance sports infrastructure in the city, but when it comes to implement those, the authorities have failed to accomplish it in time.

Basketball players have nothing to cheer as the basketball courts at Sports Complex, Sector 42, and Sports Complex, Sector 7, have been under construction for a long time.

The UT sports department has decided to organise an All-India Basketball (U-19) Tournament in November at Sports Complex, Sector 42, but the court has been under construction for the past two years.

Players have also been deprived of using facilities at Sports Complex, Sector 7, as the plan to build a court with a synthetic base has been pending for the past three months.

“The centre provides facilities to players and coaches. Work on both courts has started at the same time,” says Parmjit Kaur, a coach with the Chandigarh Sports Council. The non-availability of courts has forced the UT sports department and players to shift coaching camps to private schools.

The authorities maintain that the delay is on the part of the engineering department. Work is expected to be affected by the monsoon in the coming days.

“We are not against upgrade of courts as it is for our benefit. Since the authorities have started the work, they should not stop it in between,” says Jaskeerat Singh, a player.

“According to guidelines of the All-India Basketball Federation, tournaments should be organised at indoor stadiums. It is high time for players to adapt to conditions at indoor stadiums. It will be good if the lone indoor stadium comes up soon,” says Amarjeet Singh, a coach.

“To practise at the main centre has its own importance as it boosts performance. We cannot do anything if the court is not fit for play. It should be a matter of concern for the authorities,” says Manjit Singh, coach at Sports Complex, Sector 7.

Talking about the Sector 42 court, district sports officer KS Bharti says, “It is up to the engineering department to come up with the indoor stadium on time. It has informed us that the stadium will be ready by September. We hope that the tournament in November is organised on time .”

Talking about the Sports Complex, Sector 7, subdivision officer Jagtar Singh says, “We are through with the flooring, but the main problem is with the draw for the tender. As far as specialist carpeting is concerned, we have invited tenders for specification of work. The process will be completed in a day or two, after the permission of the executive engineer is obtained.”
